Scarred Hearts — A Girls' Love Tale - Chapter 48
“Newcomers?” A man holding a list checked it, then asked, “Two women, huh?” His tone was flirtatious as he looked them up and down with ill intent.
“You two are in charge of the third room on the left side of the second floor,” the man casually ordered. “Someone will come to report to you there.”
“Can’t believe they sent two women this time.” A man in his early thirties, dressed in a sharp suit, stood before them. “That storage room’s been abandoned for ages, yet they still want someone to guard it? A bunch of people just here because of connections to the Han family, freeloaders.” He ended with a bitter remark, then quickly added, “I’m not talking about you two—beautiful girls like you are always welcome anywhere. Which one of you is lucky enough to have dinner with me tonight?”
Yan Shuangfei’s stiff smile froze even more. Ying Sha quickly replied, “Boss, I’m not interested in men.” Then, acting flirtatiously, she hooked her arm around the unaware Yan Shuangfei and said teasingly, “I already have a lover.”
Yan Shuangfei hurriedly acted coy, leaning obediently against Ying Sha with a shy smile.
“Hmph.” The man sneered. “Didn’t expect another pair of freaks. Just like those two women from the Yan and Luo families. That Luo Qinghan—she refuses to marry a good man, instead sticking with some idiot cripple. I’m warning you, the Han boss went into a rage over Luo Qinghan’s refusal to marry. You two better behave or you’ll bring bad luck. If you get caught, neither of you will have a good end.”
“Understood, boss.” Ying Sha responded quickly. “I’ll get to work.” Then she took Yan Shuangfei’s hand, which made the man sneer again before saying, “Enough talk. Since you two have nothing better to do, clean up that storage room for me.”
“You picked a good spot,” Ying Sha commented. As they entered the storage room, a cloud of dust immediately made them cough. Ying Sha pulled out a device to scan the room and, finding no cameras or bugs, nodded with satisfaction. She said to Yan Shuangfei, “Other than being dirty and messy, everything else is perfect.”
“My insiders already checked this room,” Yan Shuangfei said, pulling out a tissue to carefully wipe dust off a chair before sitting on its corner.
“Better to be cautious than sorry,” Ying Sha grumbled. “Maybe your insider missed something. At least if we find something now, we can still run.” She squatted down and dug through the clutter, pulling out a filthy bag. “Found it.”
Yan Shuangfei didn’t even look up, still inspecting the Han family pistol in her hand. She whispered, “I always thought the Han family was impressive, but they only use flashy, useless things. Their pistols look good but are no good in use.”
“Who cares if it works well or not? The weapons issued to people at this level aren’t going to be great anyway,” Ying Sha said while counting weapons. “You think we should clean this place out for real? We’re not acting anytime soon anyway.”
“No,” Yan Shuangfei said firmly. “We’re not just sitting around; we need to scout the area and plan escape routes.”
“Your men already told us the details. Pretty accurate,” Ying Sha replied as she loaded bullets. “I’m not planning to clean up. By the way, I was thinking—if you can get your people into the Han family, couldn’t Han’s men be mixed into the Yan family too?”
“Definitely,” Yan Shuangfei answered without hesitation.
“Then Han Yu must know you’ve recovered your memory.”
“No.” Yan Shuangfei shook her head. “Those sent to the Luo family have lived with the Yan family for generations. Many grew up with me, so they’re trustworthy. Besides that, only my grandfather and Yan Shaoqiu know about this. If the Han family had that ability, they’d have taken over all the major families by now.” She scoffed. “Right now, I just want to get rid of the Yan family’s biggest headache. It’s a contribution. I’m risking my life not just to protect my future happiness.”
“Then why drag me into this?” Ying Sha pretended to be annoyed and lightly punched Yan Shuangfei, then sighed, “I owe you.”
“I saved you three times,” Yan Shuangfei said without fighting back. “But I see you as a friend. Dragging you into this was unfair.”
“You say that,” Ying Sha laughed softly. “Since we’re friends, I should help.”
Yan Shuangfei stood and slung the bag on her back, wiping a thick layer of dust off the window with her fingertips before saying, “At twelve o’clock, we wait for the signal.”
They planned to act when the Han family’s security staff changed shifts. As for themselves, since there was no need to guard the place now, they’d just stay on duty.
“Oh, I found something weird,” Ying Sha said, standing side by side with Yan Shuangfei. She turned to look at her. Yan Shuangfei looked puzzled. “What? Did you find something new?”
“I think so.” Ying Sha frowned, her expression serious. Yan Shuangfei immediately felt this wasn’t good news.
“Though we only went to the second floor by elevator, I tried pressing buttons, and the top three floors don’t work at all. The elevator is basically useless for those floors.”
Yan Shuangfei’s face darkened. “I never thought to ask about that. I bet even my insider didn’t notice. So to reach the top floors, we have to use the stairs? If we want to retreat or escape, it’s only through the stairs?”
Terrible.
Ying Sha shrugged helplessly. “Taking the elevator doesn’t help much anyway. If we get spotted and take the elevator, Han Yu can order everyone on each floor to shoot at it. We wouldn’t survive. Of course, they could also trap us on the stairs. Either way, if we get caught, we’re likely dead. But the chance of not being found is low. Studying the terrain is the most reliable way.”
“Damn it,” Yan Shuangfei said. “I might just die in a hail of bullets, turning into Swiss cheese.”
“Not necessarily.” Ying Sha smiled mysteriously. “We could consider jumping out the window. But that’s the worst-case plan.”
“All right.” Ying Sha squinted, looking through the glass at the opposite side. She patted Yan Shuangfei’s shoulder. “It’s time to start.”
