- Chapter 61 - Extra 5: Shadow Killer and the Doctor
Shadow Killer was stunned for a moment after hearing that, then sneered coldly, a sarcastic smile curling at the corner of her mouth. Her gaze was icy as she looked at the Doctor. “Miss Yi, you’re quite the flirt. Sorry, I can’t play with you—I don’t have the time for that.” With that, she hurriedly put on her clothes and was about to leave.
“Don’t go.” The Doctor quickly grabbed Shadow Killer’s hand. “I’m serious. I want to pursue you.” Shadow Killer pretended to struggle and shook her hand a few times but couldn’t get free. She turned back, slightly annoyed, and looked at the Doctor. “I never thought you’d be so frivolous. I actually considered you someone I could trust. Serious? We’ve only met a few times and you’re already telling me you like me? The Yi family is a wealthy noble house. What am I? Just some street punk. How could I ever reach for you? Besides, can you accept it? Can your parents accept it? Love without matching status is bound to face hardships. From the way you act, it’s better if you don’t act on impulse.”
The Doctor’s expression darkened, and Shadow Killer’s heart tightened. She was just testing whether the Doctor still cared about her. Saying that also distanced herself, so if the Doctor’s parents objected or doubted, she could justify herself.
Suddenly, the Doctor smiled. “I’ve already told my parents. You don’t have to worry.” Shadow Killer secretly breathed a sigh of relief but kept her tone firm. “The gap between us is too big. Please be realistic. Besides, where do you get the idea I’d like you?”
The Doctor showed no irritation. With a mysterious smile, she gently lifted Shadow Killer’s chin and lightly kissed it. Shadow Killer’s face immediately flushed red from the sudden kiss, waves of strange emotions rising inside her. She couldn’t deny she was becoming more and more interested in the Doctor.
“See?” The Doctor smiled proudly, bowed slightly with politeness, nodded at Shadow Killer, then left with a cheerful expression.
When the door quietly closed, Shadow Killer’s racing heart finally calmed a bit. She looked down to button her clothes carefully, then looked up at her reflection in the mirror. She gave a bitter smile, and her eyes showed an unprecedented confusion. Shadow Killer raised her hand and slapped herself, pulling her nearly lost feelings back to reality.
At that moment, she actually felt a little flutter in her heart, involuntarily imagining growing old with the Doctor by her side.
How naïve!
She cursed herself for being so weak, thinking that all those years of training seemed wasted, as something so small stirred such huge waves inside her.
She thought coldly: since that’s the case, she absolutely couldn’t miss this chance—to lower the Doctor’s guard and make completing her mission much easier.
“Are you going out?” The Doctor crossed her arms and looked at Shadow Killer, dressed formally.
“Yes, I’m going to find a job.”
The Doctor laughed out loud, finding it hard to believe what Shadow Killer said.
“Don’t think I’m really useless. I’m not a loser. I can be an ordinary person too.” Shadow Killer straightened her clothes. “I was just too desperate before, letting myself fall.”
The Doctor nodded thoughtfully, then asked, “Then why aren’t you falling anymore?”
Shadow Killer stopped moving and took a step closer, almost touching the Doctor. The close distance was even hard for the Doctor to get used to. Shadow Killer was right in front of her, her warm breath brushing her face. The Doctor could even smell a faint scent on Shadow Killer’s body—strangely mixed with a hint of bl00d.
The Doctor felt uneasy. That smell was too obvious, impossible to wash away. It must be the residue of many years. Xi’er’s wounds had long healed—so why was there still that bloody scent? The Doctor’s face paled slightly. Her sense of smell was more sensitive than most people’s, so noticing this subtle clue was natural.
“Well… maybe I can stay a little closer to you,” Shadow Killer said softly, her eyes deep and unreadable. There was something mixed in her gaze—maybe a bit of false intention.
The Doctor pushed down the turmoil in her heart, took a deep breath, and said, “Then… go and come back early.”
“Okay.”
Shadow Killer nodded, turned around, and strode out of the Yi family estate. Along the way, she didn’t encounter any obstacles and moved smoothly, but she didn’t dare to be careless. Although the Doctor was sheltered and naive, her parents were not. Since Shadow Killer moved in, they hadn’t appeared even once. The Doctor was so well protected—how could her parents trust Shadow Killer so easily to take care of their daughter? Shadow Killer frowned, lowered her head, and walked slowly, secretly alert. She feared those skilled little tails might see through her.
As she walked, a few tailers appeared, but they weren’t very skilled and were quickly noticed by Shadow Killer. She let out a barely audible sigh. It seemed the Doctor was worried for her safety and had specially sent people to protect her—she had to appreciate that.
Shadow Killer walked a few steps and entered a crowded area. Using the crowd’s flow, she easily shook off those following her by turning around.
“Yo.” Quick Hands sat at the bar, took a sip of her drink, and sneered, “Got stuck in the Yi family’s soft bed and can’t come out? I’ve been waiting here for a long time.”
Shadow Killer sat beside her without arguing and grabbed the drink Quick Hands was holding, taking a gulp. “Do me a favor.”
“Don’t you have a cleanliness obsession? Not picky now?” Quick Hands glared at her, annoyed. “What do you want me to do?” She looked down at her hands under the flashing lights. “I’m busy. If it weren’t for helping you, I would’ve done my manicure already.”
“Find me a job.” Shadow Killer ignored her complaints and said calmly.
“What?” Quick Hands was so shocked she almost fell off her chair.
“Be serious.”
Seeing Shadow Killer wasn’t joking, Quick Hands nodded in agreement.
Shadow Killer stood up. Her formal outfit looked out of place here, so she didn’t stay long. Before leaving, she said, “As soon as possible.” Then she quickly left.
Not long after leaving the bar, Shadow Killer’s phone rang. It was the phone the Doctor gave her, with only the Doctor’s contact saved.
“Where did you go?”
Shadow Killer frowned, standing by the riverside, leaning against the railing. “For an interview, of course.”
“My people couldn’t find you.” The Doctor’s voice relaxed. She was really worried something had happened to Shadow Killer.
“Miss Yi, please respect my personal freedom.” Shadow Killer’s tone suddenly turned cold and sharp, almost scary.
