Chapter 27: Heading Toward Her Moonlight
Jiang Yisheng rested her chin on Bai Chu’s shoulder, greedily inhaling the comforting scent on her.
She felt the strength in Bai Chu’s arms and closed her eyes, snuggling deeper into her embrace.
For a brief moment, she felt like Bai Chu truly belonged to her.
After a while, Bai Chu gradually loosened her grip.
Jiang Yisheng still didn’t let go. She wrapped her arms around Bai Chu’s shoulders and tilted her head up to look at her.
Their eyes met.
Jiang Yisheng first stared into Bai Chu’s deep pupils, then her gaze slid down to her graceful nose bridge, and finally landed on her soft, rosy lips.
A sudden wave of impulse surged within her.
Just like in the cinema earlier that night, the urge to kiss her came crashing in again.
The impulse in Jiang Yisheng’s heart was like a little bunny that knew its way — once it popped out, it would keep rushing forward endlessly, recklessly, without restraint.
She looked at Bai Chu’s delicate skin, gulped hard, and felt her heart pounding like a drum.
Slowly, she leaned in — closer, and closer — toward the source of that fragrant warmth.
The closer she got, the more she felt the heat mingled with the scent, until finally, when her nose brushed against Bai Chu’s cheek, Jiang Yisheng stopped.
She slowly opened her eyes, her nose resting on Bai Chu’s skin, carefully observing her reaction.
One second passed — Bai Chu showed no signs of rejection.
That encouraged her greatly.
Jiang Yisheng tilted her chin up and gently placed a kiss on Bai Chu’s cheek.
The instant their skin touched, Jiang Yisheng froze, not daring to move. Her hand gripping Bai Chu’s coat sleeve was ice cold, while her lips were filled with the softness beneath, and the scent beneath her nose was intoxicating.
Bai Chu lowered her eyes. Her hands clenched tightly at her sides, fingernails digging into her palms.
She could clearly feel her heartbeat accelerating in her chest, but to keep her emotions hidden, Bai Chu deliberately slowed her breathing.
But the hot, rapid breaths from the girl beside her blew against her face and completely disrupted her composure.
Jiang Yisheng slowly drew back and opened her eyes to look at the woman in front of her.
“Bai Chu.”
“Mm.” Her voice trembled ever so slightly.
“Goodnight.”
Jiang Yisheng’s pupils reflected Bai Chu’s image, her gaze gentle and sincere. A few strands of hair danced in the wind at the side of her face.
“Goodnight.”
Bai Chu’s hands slowly loosened at her sides. Just as she was about to lift one, she clenched it again.
Jiang Yisheng took a step back, opened the door, and entered the house.
Just as the door was about to close, she popped her head back out.
“Drive safely. And remember to message me when you get home.”
“Okay,” Bai Chu replied.
Even after the door fully shut, Bai Chu remained standing in place, dazedly staring at where Jiang Yisheng had just been.
The night breeze gently scattered the thin clouds. Looking up, she noticed the moon was full tonight—bright and luminous, unhidden in the inky sky.
…
After about a week of training, Yujiang Company arranged a grand banquet to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary. Every partner company received an invitation, and of course, the trainees were also invited.
Xie Xin looked at the gold-embossed invitation with her name on it, practically bursting with excitement.
“President Bai, why did you choose me back then out of all those people?” Xie Xin clutched the invitation to her chest, looking at Bai Chu with grateful tears in her eyes.
It was her first time attending such a large and formal banquet. If it weren’t for this training, she might never get to experience something like this before retirement.
“I picked randomly. But still, make sure you perform well,” Bai Chu replied truthfully.
“Oh…” Xie Xin was slightly deflated but was quickly swept up again by her excitement.
The staff collected everyone’s clothing sizes to provide free gown rentals.
They also sent gown options to everyone’s phones. If someone preferred to rent their own, they could be reimbursed with a receipt.
Xie Xin stared intently at each photo, gasping in her heart.
They were all so beautiful.
Bai Chu also opened the pictures, but before she could scroll through many, she heard hurried footsteps behind her.
She didn’t need to guess who it was.
She spun her chair around, and sure enough, Jiang Yisheng stood before her.
“Chu-jie~” Jiang Yisheng took a step forward and grabbed Bai Chu’s hand, acting coy. “Let’s go pick out dresses!”
“Where?”
“My office,” Jiang Yisheng said, tugging her up from her seat.
Bai Chu followed her without resistance.
They passed by quite a few people along the way. After greeting Jiang Yisheng, most of them would sneak glances at their tightly clasped hands.
Feeling uneasy under all those stares, Bai Chu was about to pull her hand away.
But before she could apply any force, Jiang Yisheng tightened her grip, pressing herself close to Bai Chu’s arm.
The soft sensation on her arm made Bai Chu’s mind go blank, and she completely forgot she was supposed to let go.
Jiang Yisheng opened the door and led her in.
It was Bai Chu’s first time in her office. Even though she’d seen plenty of luxurious workspaces before, she was still impressed.
The decor was elegant and professional — quite unlike Jiang Yisheng’s playful personality.
But a closer look at the figurines on the desk revealed her quirky taste after all.
Jiang Yisheng had Bai Chu sit on the sofa, and soon, people began bringing in gowns.
One after another, until they nearly filled the room.
“All right, let’s pick one!” Jiang Yisheng grinned and pulled Bai Chu to her feet.
Bai Chu stood in front of a mannequin and studied it seriously. After a while, she commented,
“This one might be a bit long for you.”
“Yeah,” Jiang Yisheng said after glancing at it. “That one’s your size.”
“My size?”
“Yep! All the gowns on the white mannequins are your size. Mine are over here,” she explained.
“No need. I can just wear what everyone else—”
“Didn’t you notice? All of your gowns are matched with mine,” Jiang Yisheng interrupted with a cheeky smile.
Bai Chu glanced over and realized it was true. Every gown on her side had a matching counterpart among Jiang Yisheng’s.
Yet if she hadn’t been told, each dress looked unique enough to stand alone.
She dropped her protest.
Walking over to Jiang Yisheng’s side, she looked through the gowns one by one.
Suddenly, her eyes caught on a red dress.
Off-the-shoulder design that lengthened the neck; a strip of white fabric adorned with pearls at the collar softened the contrast between the dress and the skin. It hugged the body before flaring slightly into a fishtail at the hem — elegant with just a hint of playfulness.
“How about trying this one?” she suggested.
“Sure!” Jiang Yisheng agreed easily.
She had the gown pushed into the changing room. “Wait here a bit, okay?”
Bai Chu nodded and sat on the sofa, checking her phone for documents from her staff.
Even though she was away for training, her workload hadn’t lessened. If anything, it had grown. Every evening she still had to deal with company matters.
As she reviewed the files, her brow gradually furrowed. Mentally, she made note of the revisions needed and kept flipping through.
Suddenly, a voice called from above.
“Chu-jie~”
She looked up slowly.
The first thing she saw was the hem of Jiang Yisheng’s gown. As her gaze traveled upward, she noticed how the red dress emphasized her curves, the red ribbon around her swan-like neck perfectly matching the gown.
Finally, her eyes met Jiang Yisheng’s face.
Something in Bai Chu’s heart stirred.
Jiang Yisheng looked down at her with a shy, expectant smile. The vibrant red on her lit up the room — like a red cinnabar mark burned into Bai Chu’s eyes, and into her heart.
“You look stunning,” Bai Chu said, her lips curling into a gentle smile.
Jiang Yisheng grinned shyly, sat beside her, and affectionately nuzzled into her shoulder.
Bai Chu instinctively wanted to hug her, but every spot her hands touched seemed to burn, so she settled for patting her on the head.
The matching dress for Jiang Yisheng’s was a white strapless fishtail gown.
The pearls draping on either side were identical to those on Jiang Yisheng’s dress.
Under Jiang Yisheng’s expectant gaze, Bai Chu walked into the dressing room.
Putting on the gown took a while. Jiang Yisheng alternated between sitting on the sofa and standing at the floor-to-ceiling window.
After what felt like forever — only five minutes — she finally heard the door unlock.
She stood up and saw Bai Chu slowly walking out.
With every step, the pearls on her dress chimed softly. Her collarbones moved gently, and the pearl earrings on her ears matched the ones on her dress — dignified and cool.
Jiang Yisheng forgot to breathe. She rushed forward in a few quick steps.
How could she let her moonlight walk toward her?
She had to run toward her moonlight.
She held Bai Chu’s hand, still a little dazed by her beauty, and softly asked,
“Chu-jie, let’s go with these outfits, okay?”
Bai Chu nodded.
“Peach, Peach!” Jiang Yisheng’s eyes never left Bai Chu’s figure. “Help me take a photo with Chu-jie!”
Zhang Tao quickly fetched the camera and pointed it at them.
“I like this window. Can we take it here?” Jiang Yisheng asked Bai Chu.
“Sure.”
They stood by the window and looked into the lens.
“President Jiang, President Bai, could you stand a little closer?” Zhang Tao prompted from behind the camera.
Jiang Yisheng pressed her lips together — As expected of Peach. She’s getting a raise.
Bai Chu leaned slightly toward Jiang Yisheng.
Just as the shutter clicked, Jiang Yisheng guided Bai Chu’s hand to rest around her waist.
Bai Chu instantly tensed.
Zhang Tao rapidly snapped photo after photo.
After a moment, she reminded them,
“President Bai, you can relax your expression just a little.”
Bai Chu quietly took a deep breath and slowly lifted the corners of her lips.
