Chapter 37: Want to Be My Girlfriend?
Bai Chu stood where she was, arms crossed as she looked at Jiang Yisheng by the window, a helpless smile tugging at her lips.
“I’ve searched and searched, searched and searched for a warm embrace.”
“Is that too much to ask…” Jiang Yisheng hugged the wine bottle to her chest, singing her heart out. As she turned around, she saw Bai Chu standing beside the sofa.
Her face was flushed red. She squinted slightly and staggered a step back.
Then suddenly, she pointed at Bai Chu and declared in a loud, clear voice:
“Bad person!”
Bai Chu paused, tilting her head with a confused smile. “I’m the bad one?”
Jiang Yisheng pulled her hand back and clutched the wine bottle tightly, nodding emphatically.
“Yes, you.”
Bai Chu shook her head and walked over, trying to take the bottle from Jiang Yisheng’s arms.
Jiang Yisheng hugged it tighter and dodged to the side, refusing to let go.
“Don’t drink anymore, give me the bottle, alright?” Bai Chu held her by the shoulders, coaxing her gently like a child.
Jiang Yisheng tilted her chin stubbornly, her eyes filled with defiance and a hint of grievance.
“Why are you here?” she asked.
“Were you feeling down today?” Bai Chu looked into her watery eyes, skipping over the question to go straight to what truly worried her.
The moment she asked, Jiang Yisheng yanked her hand away and flopped down onto the sofa, taking a large gulp of wine.
As she swallowed, the burn made her grimace. She turned her head, clearly uncomfortable.
Bai Chu sat beside her and gently took the wine bottle from her hand, placing it on the table.
“Why are you upset?” Bai Chu propped one hand on the sofa, turning to look at her intently.
Jiang Yisheng looked into those innocent, curious eyes and grew even more frustrated.
Clearly, this idiot didn’t know anything at all.
With a huff, Jiang Yisheng stood up and resumed singing, “Is that too much to ask…?”
“What’s the name of that song?” Bai Chu asked while seated on the sofa, watching her back.
Jiang Yisheng suddenly turned around and snapped, “What do you mean by that?!”
Bai Chu blinked innocently. “I… I just wanted to know the title.”
Jiang Yisheng grabbed Bai Chu’s collar and leaned in, growling, “Are you saying I sing terribly?”
Bai Chu quickly shook her head. “No, no, you sing very well.”
“Then why don’t you recognize the song?”
“I’ve just never heard it before.”
Bai Chu looked at her with sincere eyes.
Staring at her for a few seconds, Jiang Yisheng abruptly turned away, let go of her collar, and backed off.
She turned to grab the wine from the coffee table.
“Jiang Yisheng, stop drinking,” Bai Chu said.
Jiang Yisheng hugged the bottle and looked down at her. Then, suddenly, she pushed the bottle toward her. “I won’t drink, then you drink.”
Bai Chu looked up at her. Without hesitation, she reached out to take the bottle.
But Jiang Yisheng pulled it back slightly.
She knelt down beside Bai Chu, cheeks flushed, and whispered hotly in her ear.
“I’ll feed you.”
Her voice hooked gently at the end, making Bai Chu’s ear tips turn red. She swallowed unconsciously.
Jiang Yisheng brought the wine bottle slowly to Bai Chu’s lips.
Bai Chu leaned forward, her lips touching the rim of the bottle.
Jiang Yisheng slowly tilted it, watching the wine pour into Bai Chu’s mouth, watching her swallow.
A little wine spilled down the corner of her lips.
Jiang Yisheng was momentarily stunned. Her hand jerked slightly, spilling more wine onto Bai Chu’s front.
Realizing it, she quickly set the bottle aside and scrambled to grab tissues, dabbing at Bai Chu’s shirt.
Bai Chu glanced down and said lightly, “It’s fine.”
Jiang Yisheng looked at the wine-stained tissue in her hand and asked, “You’re not mad at me?”
Bai Chu looked at her and shook her head. “Of course not.”
But then Jiang Yisheng’s expression softened, and she lowered her eyes to whisper, “But I’m mad at you.”
She stood up to throw away the used tissue.
Suddenly, her wrist was grabbed, and she was pulled forward into a cool, damp embrace.
To keep her balance, her hand reflexively sought support—and landed somewhere soft and cool.
It was Bai Chu’s chest, still damp from the spilled wine.
Jiang Yisheng immediately moved her hand away, her head spinning from the alcohol, her cheeks burning all the way to her ears.
“Why are you mad at me?” Bai Chu held her waist, raising her head to ask.
Jiang Yisheng pouted and gently pinched Bai Chu’s ear, sulking. “I’ve been mad at you this whole time.”
Bai Chu looked even more confused.
Jiang Yisheng knew this fool wouldn’t understand.
“Last night was the first time you video called me. I was so happy. But after just a few words, you went off to be with He Youran. I get it, she wasn’t feeling well, and you wanted to be there for her. I understand. But after you were done with her, you just forgot about me. I waited all night for you. I fell asleep waiting. Even the next morning, you still didn’t call me back.”
The more she spoke, the more aggrieved she became. Her voice trembled with emotion.
Bai Chu frowned deeply—so everything today, all of Jiang Yisheng’s behavior, had been because of her.
“I even went to your desk this morning. I thought if you’d just explain to me in person, I’d forgive you. But you came in laughing and chatting with He Youran. You didn’t even notice me.”
Jiang Yisheng lowered her head and sniffled. “I know He Youran is a good person, and I know you two are close friends. But I was jealous. I just didn’t like being left out while you laughed with someone else.”
Two tears slid down her cheeks.
She wiped them away with the back of her hand.
The next second, a warm hand gently cupped her face, wiping away the tears.
“I’m sorry,” Bai Chu whispered.
At those words, Jiang Yisheng could no longer hold back. She threw her arms around Bai Chu’s neck and sobbed like a child.
Bai Chu wrapped her tightly in her arms, heart aching at the sound of her sobs.
She stroked Jiang Yisheng’s head, letting her cry freely.
After a while, Jiang Yisheng finally stopped crying and sat up to look at Bai Chu.
“Bai Chu, do you actually like me or not?”
Jiang Yisheng asked bluntly, her right hand unconsciously clutching Bai Chu’s shirt, heart caught in her throat.
She could feel how much Bai Chu cared for her—but what if she was wrong? What if it wasn’t love?
She just wanted to hear it from Bai Chu’s own lips.
She looked down at her, anxious and hopeful.
But then she saw a tear fall from the corner of Bai Chu’s eye.
Jiang Yisheng froze. Her grip loosened, unsure what to do.
She reached up to wipe the tear, but Bai Chu caught her wrist again.
“Jiang Yisheng.”
Bai Chu guided her hand to her own cheek, raising her head to look at her.
Jiang Yisheng’s thumb unconsciously caressed her soft skin, brushing away the tear track.
“You’re not going to leave me, right?” Bai Chu’s eyes were asking—begging—for an answer.
Jiang Yisheng froze, as if something long buried had pierced through her heart.
Because she knew—they weren’t from the same world. The system had even threatened to send her back.
There would always be a parting between them.
She understood why Bai Chu asked.
Bai Chu had lost so many people, she didn’t want to lose anyone else.
But Jiang Yisheng couldn’t make a promise she might not be able to keep.
All she could do was cherish their time together. Do everything she could to make Bai Chu happy. To give her a future worth looking forward to.
Her throat tightened. She gently stroked Bai Chu’s cheek and said earnestly:
“How could I ever bear to leave you?”
Her tongue tasted bitter.
But Bai Chu’s smile was sweet as sugar.
She believed she had gotten a clear answer.
She turned her head slightly and kissed the center of Jiang Yisheng’s palm.
Jiang Yisheng’s fingers twitched.
“Want to be my girlfriend?”
The question came suddenly, echoing in Jiang Yisheng’s chest.
She snapped her head up in disbelief. “What did you say?”
Bai Chu repeated, “Want to be my girlfriend?”
Her voice trembled with nervousness.
“Yes!” Jiang Yisheng nodded fervently.
Even if they’d eventually part ways, she wanted to spend every day with Bai Chu until then.
Jiang Yisheng cupped Bai Chu’s face in both hands, leaning in slowly.
Their noses brushed. She looked at Bai Chu’s rosy lips.
“I… I’m going to kiss you now.”
Her throat tightened. The sweet scent on Bai Chu’s skin made her feel drunk again.
“I’ve had too much to drink. If I’m not gentle… you can’t get mad…”
Before she could finish, the back of her neck was cradled, and a soft, cool pair of lips pressed against her own.
At the touch, Jiang Yisheng closed her eyes and clutched Bai Chu’s shoulders, greedily savoring the kiss that belonged only to her.
Bai Chu held her neck with one hand and her waist with the other, gently lowering her onto the sofa.
Jiang Yisheng gripped her shirt tightly, letting herself be led, dizzy and dazed, knowing only to kiss her back.
Their lips caressed, but Bai Chu never pushed further—she only kissed until Jiang Yisheng’s lips were flushed and slightly swollen.
Jiang Yisheng’s hands drifted forward unconsciously—and landed on a particularly soft and full spot.
Bai Chu’s eyes snapped open and looked down at her.
Jiang Yisheng, already beyond reason, had her eyes half-closed and cheeks burning red, like a dewdrop catching the first ray of summer sunlight—utterly irresistible.
Bai Chu caught her wandering hand and pinned it above her head. She leaned in and bit her lower lip—not hard, not light.
Jiang Yisheng whimpered softly.
Bai Chu stroked her hair gently, ending the kiss.
Looking into her dazed eyes, Bai Chu finished what Jiang Yisheng hadn’t:
“If I’m not gentle… you’re not allowed to be mad.”
Her thumb traced Jiang Yisheng’s lips, where the imprint of her teeth still lingered…
