Chapter 38: No Longer Alone
Jiang Yisheng’s lips were glistening, swollen even redder than before.
Her chest was still heaving as she opened her eyes in a daze, staring in astonishment.
How was Bai Chu that good at kissing?!
Where did she learn that???
Bai Chu leaned down and fondly ruffled her hair. Seeing Jiang Yisheng’s expression, she chuckled softly.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Jiang Yisheng narrowed her eyes, eyeing her suspiciously.
“How are you so good at it?”
“At what?” Bai Chu blinked, not catching her meaning.
“Have you… dated someone before?” Jiang Yisheng huffed, cheeks still flushed red—though whether from embarrassment or lingering drunkenness was unclear.
“No.” Bai Chu shook her head.
“Then how…” Jiang Yisheng dropped her gaze, voice growing softer. “Then how come you…”
“How come I what?” Bai Chu leaned closer, having already guessed what she meant, deliberately teasing.
As Bai Chu approached, Jiang Yisheng instinctively stared at her lips again, swallowing unconsciously.
She wanted to kiss her again.
Bai Chu laughed lightly and tapped the tip of her nose with a curled finger, gently pulling her up from the sofa and straightening the messy strands of hair from earlier.
“I’ve never dated anyone,” Bai Chu said directly.
Hearing that, Jiang Yisheng beamed with delight, revealing a neat row of teeth in a giddy grin.
She wrapped her arms around Bai Chu’s neck and leaned fully into her.
“Girlfriend,” she said, kissing Bai Chu’s cheek and calling softly.
Bai Chu’s ears flushed red at the nickname, and she gently wrapped an arm around her back, replying in a low voice.
“Mm.”
Jiang Yisheng was thrilled, rubbing her face against Bai Chu’s chest like a content kitten.
Suddenly, she touched Bai Chu’s still-damp shirt.
She looked up in alarm.
“I totally forgot—your clothes are still wet!”
She quickly got down from the sofa, tugging Bai Chu’s hand as she headed upstairs.
“Come on, I’ll help you change.”
Bai Chu followed Jiang Yisheng into the bedroom, remembering that this was the room Jiang Yisheng had slept in the last time she was drunk.
Only Bai Chu knew just how much of that drunkenness had been real, and how much had been staged.
Jiang Yisheng rummaged through the closet and handed over a clean white shirt.
“Go ahead and change. I’ll wait outside. Call me when you’re done.” She stepped out.
Leaning against the door with both hands on her cheeks, she took a moment to calm down.
So she and Bai Chu were really together now?
Happiness came this suddenly?
She’d just kissed Bai Chu… Bai Chu’s lips were so soft and sweet. And she smelled so good.
Jiang Yisheng was so giddy she couldn’t sit still and ended up doing an entire Tai Chi routine in place.
At that exact moment, Bai Chu opened the door: “…?”
“What are you doing?” Bai Chu asked in confusion.
Jiang Yisheng instantly stood at attention. “Nothing.”
She stepped forward and took Bai Chu’s clothes.
“I’ll wash these for you.”
“You don’t ha—” Before Bai Chu could finish, Jiang Yisheng had already snatched them away.
“I’ll bring them to you tomorrow.”
“…Alright.”
After placing the clothes in the laundry basket, Jiang Yisheng couldn’t resist sticking close to Bai Chu again.
“I knew you liked me,” she mumbled, clinging to her affectionately.
Bai Chu let her nuzzle as much as she wanted.
She had finally taken a step forward—for herself.
She, too, wanted to get closer to happiness.
“Are you hungry? I’ll make you something,” Bai Chu whispered softly by her ear.
Jiang Yisheng nodded. She hadn’t eaten anything all day.
Bai Chu told her to entertain herself while she went to check what ingredients they had in the kitchen.
Under the setting sun, Bai Chu stood in the kitchen wearing an apron, preparing a meal. Jiang Yisheng leaned over the sofa back, watching her quietly.
She turned on a song and simply gazed at Bai Chu’s silhouette.
Seriously, how could she be this happy?
Jiang Yisheng discreetly wiped away a tear.
All the love she had received in this novel world was a gift. She didn’t want to go back. She couldn’t bear to leave Bai Chu, or anything here.
Softly, she called out her name.
“Bai Chu.”
It was so quiet, she knew Bai Chu wouldn’t hear it while cooking.
“Bai Chu.”
She called again.
“Bai Chu.”
This time, Bai Chu paused mid-stir, turning to look at her.
Jiang Yisheng shook her head and smiled.
“Ten more minutes,” Bai Chu said, thinking Jiang Yisheng was just too hungry and hurried up the cooking.
During dinner, Jiang Yisheng leaned closer to Bai Chu, asking her to feed her.
Bai Chu picked up a shrimp, blew on it, and brought it to her lips.
Jiang Yisheng, blissed out like she was soaking in honey, closed her eyes in contentment.
So this was what love felt like.
Jiang Yisheng had finally tasted it.
After dinner, she cuddled up in Bai Chu’s arms again and hugged her for a long time.
She didn’t want Bai Chu to leave. But then again, it was only their first day together—it felt wrong to ask her to stay overnight.
In the end, she pouted and walked Bai Chu to the door.
Bai Chu could tell she was unhappy. She reached out and gently pinched her soft earlobe.
“See you tomorrow.”
Jiang Yisheng tilted her chin, waiting for something more.
Bai Chu chuckled, leaned in, and kissed her on the lips.
Only then did Jiang Yisheng’s smile return.
“Be safe on the road,” she said, walking her to the car.
Bai Chu nodded and added, “I’ll message you when I get home.”
Satisfied, Jiang Yisheng nodded back and watched her car drive off.
She skipped back to her room and flooded the family group chat with a barrage of emojis.
Yu Mushan replied almost instantly:
“What’s going on here?”
Jiang Yisheng: “Hehe~”
Yu Mushan: “You fell in love?”
Jiang Yisheng replied with a blushing emoji.
The next second, a video call came through.
She answered it.
On screen were Yu Mushan and Jiang Hang’s curious faces squeezed together.
“Well? Did it really happen? Come on, tell your parents,” Yu Mushan urged eagerly.
Jiang Yisheng smiled shyly and nodded.
Yu Mushan let out a gasp. “Today? Bai Chu said yes?”
Jiang Yisheng nodded again, harder this time.
Yu Mushan’s eyes immediately softened, brimming with tears.
“Mama, why are you crying?” Jiang Yisheng noticed her teary eyes.
“Shengsheng, you better treat Bai Chu well. Don’t bully her or make her upset,” Yu Mushan reminded her.
“I know,” Jiang Yisheng nodded.
“But don’t let yourself get hurt either,” Yu Mushan added.
“This time, bring Xiao Bai over for a meal. Let us know what she likes to eat ahead of time so your dad can make a full table of dishes,” Jiang Hang chimed in, grinning from ear to ear.
“Got it, got it.”
“…”
After chatting with her parents, Jiang Yisheng lay on the bed, still replaying that kiss from Bai Chu in her mind.
She rolled around wrapped in her blanket.
Just then, Bai Chu sent her a video call.
Jiang Yisheng immediately sat up from her blanket cocoon and answered.
On screen was her own messy hair and goofy smile.
Bai Chu couldn’t help but laugh.
Jiang Yisheng quickly smoothed her hair with her hands. “You’re not home yet?”
“Almost,” Bai Chu said, unlocking the door with her fingerprint.
Jiang Yisheng watched as she propped her phone up and bent down to change shoes.
Suddenly, a thought struck her.
“Those slippers from before—did you buy them just for me?”
Bai Chu finished changing and sat down on the couch with her phone, but didn’t answer, just smiled.
“Say something!” Jiang Yisheng pressed her.
“Mm.” Bai Chu nodded softly. She recalled how she had thrown those slippers out that night and felt a twinge of guilt.
When she looked at the screen again, Jiang Yisheng was holding those slippers up to the camera.
“These have been claimed. I’m ordering you to buy another pair to keep at your place.”
Bai Chu laughed and agreed, dotingly.
The two of them continued chatting casually, unaware that it had gotten so late.
Jiang Yisheng yawned. Even though she didn’t want to hang up, she also didn’t want Bai Chu to stay up too late, so she ended the call.
Bai Chu set her phone down and leaned back against the sofa, closing her eyes.
A soft smile curled on her lips, her mind filled with Jiang Yisheng’s voice and smile.
Her life was slowly being filled by Jiang Yisheng.
From now on, she would no longer be alone. Everything she did seemed to have new meaning.
She picked up her phone and headed to the bathroom.
Humming softly:
“I am a little little bird…”
She mimicked Jiang Yisheng’s off-key singing, though she couldn’t remember the lyrics…
The next morning, Xie Xin was one of the first to arrive at the office. She had gotten there too early and ended up dozing at her desk.
She was awakened by the smell of food.
Blinking awake, she found breakfast sitting on her desk.
“You probably didn’t eat yet—so I brought you some,” Bai Chu said, smiling gently as she sat beside her.
Xie Xin picked up the steaming breakfast in disbelief and rubbed her eyes.
“President Bai, did you eat already?” she asked, overwhelmed by the gesture.
“Not yet,” Bai Chu replied calmly.
“Then this…” Xie Xin pointed at the food.
Bai Chu was just about to respond when a cheerful voice rang out behind her.
“Chu-jie!”
Jiang Yisheng came jogging over, holding two containers.
“I made wontons this morning—try some!” She set the lunch box on the desk and opened it, looking at Bai Chu expectantly.
“Did you eat already?” Bai Chu asked.
“Yep! Ate with Zhang Tao. But hers were made by the auntie—yours are the ones I made.”
A faint smile tugged at Bai Chu’s lips as she picked up a spoonful and took a bite.
“How is it?”
Jiang Yisheng sat in He Youran’s seat, eyes gleaming as she watched her.
“It’s delicious,” Bai Chu said with a nod.
“…”
Xie Xin bit into her bun, drank some water, and stared blankly at her computer.
“Oh, your shirt’s dry. It’s in this bag.”
“That fast?”
“Smell this laundry detergent. I love this scent.”
Jiang Yisheng pulled out the shirt and held it to Bai Chu’s nose.
“It smells great.”
“…”
Xie Xin: “!!!”
She stuffed a huge bite of bun in her mouth and suddenly got it.
