Chapter 42: Fiction or Reality?
Jiang Yisheng brought Bai Chu into the master bedroom and started rummaging through the closet to find some pajamas for her.
The Jiang Yisheng in this world had a different fashion sense than her, and though she had bought many new clothes over the past six months, she hadn’t thrown away any of the old ones. They were all still neatly stored in the closet.
She was trying to find something suitable for Bai Chu to wear.
While digging through the closet, something suddenly fell out.
Jiang Yisheng turned around to pick it up, but Bai Chu had already picked it up.
Jiang Yisheng didn’t even know what it was—until Bai Chu unfolded it in her hands.
Jiang Yisheng’s eyes widened in shock. It was a black lace bra, made entirely of lace.
Before Bai Chu could react, Jiang Yisheng snatched the bra away with a blushing face and stammered nervously, “If I said this wasn’t mine, would you believe me?”
Bai Chu realized belatedly and coughed lightly, embarrassed, touching the tip of her nose. “Where’s my pajamas?”
Thanks to that little episode, Jiang Yisheng hurriedly picked out a long-sleeved, full-length pajama set and handed it to her. “Will this do?”
“Yes.” Bai Chu looked at the white pajamas with little cartoon puppies and nodded.
“Then go ahead and take a shower first.” Jiang Yisheng was still flushed, tilting her head up to look at Bai Chu.
Bai Chu nodded and walked into the bathroom.
With her back to the bathroom, Jiang Yisheng stared out the window at the night view. The sound of water running in the shower filled the room, and she couldn’t help but take a few deep breaths.
“Lust is emptiness, and emptiness is lust…” she murmured to herself repeatedly.
After chanting that over ten times, she even practiced a set of Tai Chi moves right on the floor.
When Bai Chu came out, she caught sight of Jiang Yisheng mid-squat in a Tai Chi stance.
“Tai Chi?” Bai Chu asked as she tidied her freshly blown hair.
Jiang Yisheng immediately stood up straight, awkwardly swinging her arms. “Yeah, I ate too much, just exercising a bit.”
Bai Chu believed her and nodded, holding her changed clothes as she walked slowly toward Jiang Yisheng.
Bai Chu had fair skin, and after a shower, it looked even softer and more radiant. The white pajamas matched her complexion perfectly. Her damp hair was draped over her back, and the cuteness of the cartoon puppy prints softened her natural cool aura. As she got closer, a subtle fragrance drifted in her wake—adding even more temptation for Jiang Yisheng.
Jiang Yisheng couldn’t help sniffing slightly and unconsciously gulped, her gaze landing right on Bai Chu’s faintly visible collarbones.
She instantly regretted choosing this cartoon pajama set for Bai Chu…
Wait!!!
What was she thinking?!
She should be glad she chose this pajama set!
Jiang Yisheng sighed silently to herself.
Completely unaware of Jiang Yisheng’s inner turmoil, Bai Chu noticed her staring and reached out to ruffle her hair.
Jiang Yisheng was shorter than Bai Chu, so when Bai Chu leaned in, Jiang Yisheng’s line of sight was level with her collarbone. She immediately shut her eyes tight, her fingers clenching reflexively at her sides.
“I—I’m gonna take a shower now!” Jiang Yisheng stammered and bolted into the bathroom like the wind.
The lingering steam still held traces of Bai Chu’s scent.
Jiang Yisheng shut the door and took a deep breath.
She pointed at her reflection in the mirror and mouthed to herself: Can you be any more useless?
She splashed her face with cold water, feeling much better, and finally stepped under the shower.
She was quick because she kept thinking about Bai Chu. But just as she turned off the water, she realized—She forgot to bring pajamas!!!
She thought about putting on her old clothes, but when she looked down, she realized they were already wet.
Jiang Yisheng hesitated in the bathroom for a while before clearing her throat and calling out, “Bai Chu-jie.”
Bai Chu immediately responded, “What’s wrong?”
“I forgot to bring pajamas. Can you get one for me?” Jiang Yisheng said, thoroughly embarrassed.
She heard rustling sounds from outside, and soon, a knock on the door.
Jiang Yisheng cracked the door open a sliver. Bai Chu averted her face and handed over the pajamas. As soon as Jiang Yisheng took them, Bai Chu closed the door quickly. When she pulled her hand back, she noticed a droplet of water on her wrist.
It must’ve dripped from Jiang Yisheng’s hand while taking the clothes.
She gently wiped it off and coughed lightly, returning to the bed.
A little while later, Jiang Yisheng came out wearing another cartoon pajama set, this one pink.
She looked over to see Bai Chu reclining against the headboard, absorbed in her phone, looking very focused—probably on work.
Jiang Yisheng went around to the other side, lifted the blanket, and climbed into bed.
Seeing her return, Bai Chu locked her screen and put the phone down. She had barely laid down when something soft and warm snuggled into her chest.
The corners of Bai Chu’s lips curled into a smile. She wrapped her arms around Jiang Yisheng’s shoulders and placed a gentle kiss on her crown.
Jiang Yisheng wrapped her arms around Bai Chu’s waist and burrowed even deeper into her embrace.
Bai Chu closed her eyes softly, her palm stroking the top of Jiang Yisheng’s head. Her arms and heart were both full.
Lying on Bai Chu’s arm, Jiang Yisheng looked up and softly called, “Bai Chu.”
“Hmm?” Bai Chu slowly opened her eyes and met her gaze.
Jiang Yisheng reached out and gently tapped Bai Chu’s chin, feeling the warmth and elasticity of her skin.
In that moment, she suddenly felt disoriented.
She could no longer tell if Bai Chu was a character from a novel or a real person.
She liked Bai Chu. She didn’t want her to continue being a side character in this story. She wanted her to live freely, without being bound by any storyline.
“Bai… Chu.”
Jiang Yisheng said her name slowly and clearly.
Bai Chu didn’t say anything—she just quietly looked into her eyes.
If only you weren’t just a character in a book…
Jiang Yisheng thought silently.
Her fingers moved upward, slowly brushing Bai Chu’s lips.
Thinking of their kiss from the night before, her heart began racing and her breath turned uneven.
Noticing the look in her eyes, Bai Chu gently tilted her head and kissed her fingertips.
Jiang Yisheng’s fingers trembled, and she inhaled sharply.
Bai Chu, lips still against her fingers, leaned in toward her lips.
Just as Jiang Yisheng was about to pull her hand away, Bai Chu grasped her wrist, stopping her.
A second later, she kissed Jiang Yisheng’s lips—right through her fingers.
Jiang Yisheng froze, her hand behind Bai Chu gripping the fabric of her clothes, her heart pounding like a drum.
The air seemed to freeze. Jiang Yisheng didn’t dare move a muscle, but she could clearly hear her own quickening breath.
A few seconds later, Bai Chu released her wrist and slowly pulled back.
Jiang Yisheng’s heart felt suddenly empty.
That’s it?
But Bai Chu didn’t move far. She continued holding her, resting her chin gently on Jiang Yisheng’s head.
Jiang Yisheng was still dazed from that kiss.
“Tight.”
After a while, Bai Chu’s voice came from above.
“What?”
“You’re gripping my clothes—very tightly,” Bai Chu repeated.
“Oh—oh.” Jiang Yisheng finally realized her hand was still clutching Bai Chu’s pajamas.
She quickly let go and withdrew her hand, placing both hands quietly in front of her, slowly relaxing in Bai Chu’s embrace.
She didn’t know how long had passed, but soon Jiang Yisheng’s breathing grew even.
Bai Chu slowly opened her eyes and, by the moonlight, looked at Jiang Yisheng’s sleeping face, eyes full of affection.
She kissed her forehead gently, then closed her eyes again, drifting into sleep beside her.
…
The next morning, Zhang Tao entered Jiang Yisheng’s home and was visibly stunned to see all three of them there. But she quickly recovered, maintaining the professionalism of a top executive assistant without showing any surprise.
“Taozi, come eat,” Jiang Yisheng called out to him.
Zhang Tao walked to the table and greeted them one by one. “President Jiang, President Bai, President He.”
Bai Chu nodded to her.
“Good morning,” He Youran replied with a smile.
“Try the beef pancakes the housekeeper made today. They’re delicious!” Jiang Yisheng’s cheeks were puffed out from eating, adorably so.
Bai Chu sat next to her, occasionally wiping her mouth.
Zhang Tao simply ate quietly, not daring to lift her head the entire time.
After breakfast, the three headed to the company.
Bai Chu and He Youran went to the ninth floor, while Jiang Yisheng returned to her own office.
When she opened the door, she saw the cleaner was tidying up.
“Huh? Did Sister Fang take the day off today?” Jiang Yisheng asked, noticing the unfamiliar face.
The cleaner, wearing a cap and mask in a tan uniform, paused her work and replied, “She’s taken extended leave. The logistics manager assigned me as her replacement.”
“Oh, I see.” Jiang Yisheng looked at the pancake in her hand. She had brought two for Driver Zhang, and was going to give one to Sister Fang. Since she wasn’t here, she gave one to the new cleaner.
“Thank you, President Jiang,” the cleaner said, astonished by her generosity.
“You can go now if you’re done,” Zhang Tao reminded her, noticing she was lingering.
“Ah, okay.” The cleaner finally tore her gaze away from Jiang Yisheng and packed up her things to leave.
Zhang Tao watched her go, a faint sense of suspicion growing in his heart.
Today, Jiang Yisheng couldn’t attend class with Bai Chu. She had to go out with Yu Mushan to discuss a business deal.
It was a big one. Yu Mushan said she wanted to take her along for experience.
They would leave at 10:30. Still half an hour to go.
By now, Bai Chu was likely already in class. Jiang Yisheng didn’t want to disturb her and decided to kill some time in the office.
She sat at her desk and idly searched for a novel to read.
As she tapped the keyboard to unlock the screen, she noticed a faint wiped-clean streak on the keys.
“Huh? Do cleaners wipe keyboards now?” she muttered.
Zhang Tao immediately walked over and bent down, saying, “Computers are confidential equipment. Cleaners are not supposed to touch them. This one must be new and unfamiliar with the rules. I’ll inform the logistics department.”
“It’s fine, it’s not a big deal,” Jiang Yisheng waved it off, not taking it seriously.
