Chapter 46: You Can’t Be Irresponsible
A wave of emotion surged in Bai Chu’s chest. She rested her forehead against Jiang Yisheng’s chest, her bandaged right hand gripping her shirt tightly.
Jiang Yisheng gently held her fingertips, trying to ease her grip, but the bandage was already soaked with another patch of stark red bl00d.
It pierced Jiang Yisheng’s heart with pain.
Since Bai Chu didn’t want to talk, Jiang Yisheng didn’t press her. She simply patted her back gently, lulling her to sleep.
Once Bai Chu’s breathing evened out in her arms, Jiang Yisheng carefully withdrew her hand and quietly got out of bed, afraid to wake her.
She shut the door and walked into another room, taking out her phone to call Zhang Tao.
“Look into how exactly Bai Chu got hurt tonight,” Jiang Yisheng gripped the edge of the phone, suppressing her anger.
How could her Bai Chu get hurt just from a simple business meeting? If Bai Chu hadn’t stopped her tonight, she would have stormed that place and flipped it inside out.
As long as she was in this world, she wouldn’t let Bai Chu suffer any injustice.
After hanging up, Jiang Yisheng finally let herself take in her surroundings.
It was a study, with a large bookshelf filled with books. She randomly pulled one out and saw it was covered in sticky tabs—likely Bai Chu’s notes while reading.
She flipped it open. The pages were still crisp and clean, with no marks or doodles—clearly well taken care of.
Jiang Yisheng smiled softly. Bai Chu was so lovable.
She returned the book to the shelf and prepared to go back to sleep beside Bai Chu. As she turned, she accidentally knocked over a stack of books on the desk.
She quickly bent down to pick them up. Among them was a wrinkled black notebook that stood out amidst the neatly kept books.
Jiang Yisheng didn’t want to intrude on Bai Chu’s privacy. She planned to just pick it up and put it back—but then a small piece of paper fell out.
It was also crumpled, with a few dried tear stains.
Jiang Yisheng’s heart ached at the sight. She knew those were marks left by tears.
The note had yellowed over time. The handwriting was slightly childish, clearly written when Bai Chu was younger.
As Jiang Yisheng read the words, a sharp pain stabbed through her chest.
On it, it said: “Being alive doesn’t seem to mean anything.”
She froze.
Had Bai Chu really had such thoughts at such a young age?
How much suffering had she endured all these years? Jiang Yisheng couldn’t even begin to imagine.
She placed the note back into the notebook, then put everything back in its place.
Exhaling deeply, Jiang Yisheng returned to the bedroom. Bai Chu was still asleep, but not soundly—her body curled tightly into a ball, her brows furrowed.
Still in her day clothes, Jiang Yisheng worried she wouldn’t sleep comfortably. She opened the closet and found a pair of pajamas to help her change into.
Sitting beside her on the bed, she began unbuttoning Bai Chu’s shirt. She had only undone two buttons when her wrist was suddenly grabbed.
Jiang Yisheng stopped and looked at her gently.
“Don’t be scared. It’s me.”
Bai Chu was still frowning, staring blankly at her. When she finally registered Jiang Yisheng’s face, she slowly released her grip.
“Let’s change you into pajamas. It’ll be more comfortable.” Jiang Yisheng brushed her hair aside and asked softly, “Should I help you, or do you want to change yourself?”
Bai Chu didn’t have any strength left. Her pale lips parted. “Help me.”
Jiang Yisheng nodded and continued unbuttoning.
At this moment, there were no improper thoughts in her mind—only that note, and the pain Bai Chu had endured over the years.
But when she finally removed Bai Chu’s shirt and saw the fair skin beneath, Jiang Yisheng’s fingers suddenly froze.
She quickly averted her eyes. After a long pause, she hesitantly reached behind Bai Chu to unhook her bra.
Bai Chu lifted her body slightly to assist, but Jiang Yisheng fumbled in her nervousness.
Bai Chu had no strength left to stay up and collapsed onto Jiang Yisheng’s arm, which pulled Jiang Yisheng’s body down on top of her.
Their eyes met, gazes entangled.
In the dim light, Bai Chu’s eyes shimmered. Lying on the bed, she gently raised a hand and stroked Jiang Yisheng’s hair.
Jiang Yisheng looked back at her obediently. Bai Chu’s misty gaze made her heart clench.
Then Bai Chu’s hand pressed firmly against the back of Jiang Yisheng’s head and pulled her in for a kiss.
As Bai Chu’s beautiful face came closer, Jiang Yisheng slowly closed her eyes and earnestly responded to her cool, soft lips.
She sucked lightly on them—it was warm and sweet, like all their past kisses.
Suddenly, something even softer and wetter slipped past Jiang Yisheng’s lips, brushing lightly inside her mouth before finding her own tongue.
Jiang Yisheng’s eyes flew open as heat rushed to her head. Her mouth went dry, and instinctively she began to tangle with Bai Chu’s sweetness.
Soft sounds of kissing echoed faintly in the room as the temperature steadily climbed. Jiang Yisheng grew hotter and hotter.
The palm resting on Bai Chu’s back was burning, just like Bai Chu’s skin. Their shared heat was overwhelming, making Jiang Yisheng’s breath quicken.
So this was what a real kiss felt like. Her heart was pounding wildly, and it felt like every bl00d vessel was about to burst.
Her hand shifted slightly—then she remembered why it had been there in the first place.
Jiang Yisheng swallowed hard, finally managing to undo the clasp after several failed attempts, then slipped the bra off along with her shirt.
Her hand glided along Bai Chu’s waist, covering more and more skin.
Bai Chu gripped her shoulders tightly, drawing their bodies even closer.
Jiang Yisheng’s kisses moved down—first Bai Chu’s jaw, then her neck.
Suddenly, her nose brushed against the bandage on Bai Chu’s neck. The rough texture snapped Jiang Yisheng back to her senses. She slowly pulled away from her neck and rubbed her cheek gently against Bai Chu’s.
She sat up, her ears flushed red, and helped Bai Chu out of her shirt.
Grabbing the pajamas beside the bed, she averted her gaze and helped her into the top, carefully buttoning it all the way up.
Each button she fastened was like sealing away the temptation in her heart.
“You can change your pants yourself,” Jiang Yisheng said hoarsely. “I’m going to take a shower. I’ll be right back.”
After what just happened, she really needed a cold shower.
She lowered the water temperature and let it rinse away her body’s heat—trying to clear her head.
She could give herself to Bai Chu, but she couldn’t take anything from her.
Because she knew—one day, she’d have to leave.
And she couldn’t be that irresponsible.
When she returned, Bai Chu had already changed. Jiang Yisheng lay down beside her, one hand gently resting on her back, the other curled into a loose fist beside the pillow, not daring to move.
She watched Bai Chu’s sleeping face, feeling the warmth beneath her palm.
Everything felt so real—yet the thought of their inevitable parting was like a thorn buried deeper and deeper in Jiang Yisheng’s heart…
…
The next morning, Jiang Yisheng opened her eyes to see Bai Chu staring back at her. She must’ve been awake for a while.
“I’ll go make you breakfast. Then let’s go to the company together, okay?” Jiang Yisheng reached out and tapped Bai Chu’s nose gently.
Bai Chu shook her head.
“No appetite?” Jiang Yisheng asked.
“I’m going to the office today,” Bai Chu said, then added, “to resign.”
“Resign?” Jiang Yisheng’s eyes widened in shock.
“Mhm.” Bai Chu nodded.
“Why?”
“I’ll explain tonight when I get back.” Bai Chu took Jiang Yisheng’s hand and kissed the tip of her finger.
“Alright, then pick me up from work later, okay?” Jiang Yisheng smiled brightly.
Bai Chu loved that smile. It always made her feel better.
“Okay.”
After a quick breakfast, Bai Chu drove Jiang Yisheng to the Yujiang company. Once she saw her walk through the front doors, she turned and drove toward Renyuan.
On the way, Lü Mu called.
“President Bai, I heard what happened.”
“I’m waiting for you in the office. No matter what, I’m with you.”
Her voice was firm and serious.
Bai Chu replied, “I’ll be there in about twenty minutes.”
Usually, she’d park in the garage, but today, Bai Chu pulled up directly in front of the Renyuan building and stopped the car at the entrance.
Two security guards exchanged glances. One of them stepped forward as she approached.
“President Bai, I can park the car for you.”
After a pause, Bai Chu handed him the keys.
She went straight to her office to meet Lü Mu.
As soon as she opened the door, Lü Mu saw the injuries on her neck and hand. Her brows immediately furrowed.
“You’re hurt pretty badly.” She stepped in to check Bai Chu’s wounds carefully.
“It’s nothing,” Bai Chu didn’t stop her.
Lü Mu’s expression was focused as she inspected the bandages.
“Are you sure you want to do this with me?” Bai Chu asked. “If you stay, you’ll still earn a Grade 15 salary at Renyuan.”
Grade 15—equivalent to an entry-level executive.
“I’m sure,” Lü Mu looked up at her. “Wherever President Bai goes, I go.”
Bai Chu gave her a grateful look. The two of them headed for the vice president’s office.
Vice President Zhang Qiming didn’t look surprised to see them. He stubbed out his cigarette and gestured. “You’re here. Please, have a seat.”
He had expected her to come.
Sitting across from him, Bai Chu got straight to the point: “President Zhang, what happened yesterday?”
Zhang Qiming had also noticed her visible injuries.
He didn’t even bother to pretend. Leaning back in his chair, he crossed his legs and sighed heavily, as if speaking earnestly.
“Don’t blame me. Blame yourself for choosing the wrong side.” He squinted at her.
“I never chose a side,” Bai Chu said flatly.
“That’s even worse,” Zhang Qiming spread his hands. “In a company like ours, if you don’t pick a side, you won’t even have room to breathe.”
“President Bai, in life and business, you can’t be too righteous,” he took a sip of tea and shook his head. “Too righteous, and you’ll only make enemies.”
