Chapter 50: I’ll Be Your Mom for Life
“Shengsheng.” Yu Mushan and Jiang Hang rushed over and knelt by the bed.
Only then did Bai Chu reluctantly release her tight embrace on Jiang Yisheng, shifting slightly to the side, yet still watching her intently.
“Shengsheng, you scared Mom to death. Are you hurt anywhere?” Yu Mushan was crying as she checked Jiang Yisheng from head to toe.
Jiang Hang didn’t speak. He simply looked at his daughter, his eyes slightly red, glistening with tears.
“Dad, Mom, I’m okay.” Jiang Yisheng looked at the worried faces in front of her, and her eyes quickly reddened.
Earlier that morning, she had been in her office dealing with work. Zhang Tao had just finished briefing her on the day’s schedule and was on her way to report to Yu Mushan.
As soon as Zhang Tao left, Jiang Yisheng had planned to take a short nap while thinking about Bai Chu.
She wondered how Bai Chu was doing with her matters and whether they could have lunch together. If Bai Chu came back around noon, she would need help changing her bandages. The weather was getting hot, and she worried about the wound getting infected.
She glanced at the time. It had only been thirty minutes since work started. Time felt so slow.
Just as she was about to stand up, there was a knock on the door.
It was Director Du from the logistics department.
“President Jiang, do you have a moment? I’d like to report on some recent work.” Director Du stood outside the door, waiting for her permission.
“Ah, sure,” Jiang Yisheng replied, sitting back down.
“It’s about the new batch of temporary workers. I’m thinking…”
As Director Du sat in front of her, Jiang Yisheng detected a faint scent—odd, but not unpleasant.
Gradually, she started feeling drowsy. She could no longer concentrate on what he was saying. Her eyelids grew heavy.
“That’s all. I won’t bother you further,” Director Du said as he stood and slightly bowed, then left.
Jiang Yisheng felt overwhelmingly sleepy. Using the last of her strength, she leaned on the wall and made her way to the lounge. She collapsed onto the bed and lost consciousness.
When she woke up, she was already in that strange room.
She was lying on a bed, and a man stood nearby, comparing two paper reports.
“Perfect,” the man said, eyes filled with excitement.
“Who are you? Why did you kidnap me?” Jiang Yisheng tensed up as she took in the unfamiliar surroundings, only then realizing she was tied up.
She struggled, but the ropes were too tight.
The man glanced down at her, said nothing, and turned to mix chemicals.
“Let me go! What do you want with me?!” Jiang Yisheng shouted at his back, her face full of fear.
The man turned around, shaking a bag of saline solution.
“So what if you’re the wealthiest in Jiang City? You’re still going to obediently provide my son with a heart.” His eyes were full of contempt.
Jiang Yisheng froze. A heart transplant? She screamed, thrashing violently, “Let me go! Help! Somebody help!”
The man tore a strip of tape and sealed her mouth.
“Quit shouting. You’ll be wheeled into the OR soon. Once the anesthesia kicks in, it’ll all be over.” He sneered and looked toward the boy lying in the next bed.
Jiang Yisheng followed his gaze. A frail boy lay there, struggling to even breathe.
“To be precise, he’s your younger brother,” the man said. “You two share the same mother. But you got lucky—adopted into a wealthy family, living a life of luxury.”
“My son fell ill in his prime.”
“Funny how fate works, isn’t it? Out of all the people, it’s your heart that’s a match,” he sneered. “Maybe even the heavens wanted you to pay his price.”
Jiang Yisheng whimpered behind the tape, tears streaming down in terror.
“When I first found out that wretched woman had another child, I wanted to strangle her. But I guess I was wrong—turns out you’re useful.” He turned away to finish preparing the anesthetic.
Jiang Yisheng struggled so hard her wrists were rubbed raw.
He turned around, needle in hand. She watched as it moved closer and closer to her body, her forehead soaked in sweat, her heartbeat pounding in her ears. She shook her head frantically, trying to wriggle away.
Then Bai Chu appeared.
The moment Jiang Yisheng saw Bai Chu’s terrified yet determined eyes, she felt an overwhelming sense of calm.
But the next second, panic gripped her again.
She could die in this world—it would only mean she returned to the real one. But Bai Chu must not die!
When Bai Chu wrapped her tightly in her arms, Jiang Yisheng’s heart finally settled.
As long as Bai Chu was safe.
Jiang Yisheng looked up at Yu Mushan, feeling a surge of warmth.
“Shengsheng,” Yu Mushan called her name and gripped her hand tightly.
“Mom,” Jiang Yisheng replied, her eyes wet as she sweetly called out.
Yu Mushan instantly teared up again and nodded repeatedly, as though afraid she’d never hear her call her that again.
The police arrived and arrested both the man and the woman. As Wang Shan was being escorted past Jiang Yisheng, she struggled against the officers just to get a look at her.
Their eyes met for a moment. Jiang Yisheng recalled what the man had said. This cleaning woman must be the original Jiang Yisheng’s biological mother.
For the first time, Jiang Yisheng felt a profound disconnect between herself and this world.
She felt sorry for the “original Jiang Yisheng.” She felt injustice on her behalf—felt her pain.
A mother might not love her daughter, but she should never try to kill her.
Her gaze turned cold, filled with disappointment, her eyes slightly red.
After just a second, she looked away and buried her face in Bai Chu’s arms, refusing to look in that direction again.
Bai Chu’s stare at the woman was ice-cold and full of fury.
But when Jiang Yisheng leaned into her, Bai Chu immediately reached out, gently rubbing her shoulder to comfort her.
Wang Shan lowered her head, staring at the floor. Two teardrops fell, only to be crushed underfoot as the police nudged her forward.
The boy was also sent to the hospital. Zhang Tao and two bodyguards followed the police to give statements. The others gradually returned to their cars.
Bai Chu wanted to ride with Jiang Yisheng, but she knew this time was best left to her family. Just as she turned to get in another vehicle, Jiang Yisheng grabbed her wrist tightly.
“Ride with me,” Jiang Yisheng said, her hand icy, her eyes full of unease.
Bai Chu looked toward Yu Mushan.
“Xiaobai should ride with us,” Yu Mushan said.
“Okay.” Bai Chu nodded and smiled gently, locking eyes with Jiang Yisheng.
On the way back, Yu Mushan never let go of Jiang Yisheng’s hand, keeping it warm. The car was silent.
Normally so lively, Jiang Yisheng was unusually quiet. She didn’t think much—just that no parent should ever be so cruel to their own child.
“Shengsheng.” Yu Mushan finally found the courage to speak.
“Hm?” Jiang Yisheng looked up.
“Do you… do you hate me?” Yu Mushan’s voice trembled, too afraid to meet her eyes.
“Mom.” Jiang Yisheng called her again.
She had always called her “Mom,” not “Ma.” She had never said that word before. Now that she had a real mom, she wanted to say it often.
Yu Mushan’s heart tightened. She slowly raised her eyes and met Jiang Yisheng’s.
Then Jiang Yisheng pulled her hand away.
Yu Mushan’s heart dropped, like something had gripped it hard.
But the next second, Jiang Yisheng threw her arms around her.
“Thank you,” she whispered tearfully, smiling at her.
Yu Mushan’s nose stung. Tears welled in her eyes as she hugged her back tightly, lips trembling.
It was she who should be saying thank you.
More than Jiang Yisheng needing her, she needed Jiang Yisheng.
“Can you be my mom forever?” Jiang Yisheng asked softly, resting on Yu Mushan’s shoulder.
She liked Yu Mushan—not for her status or power—but because she was the first person to truly show her motherly love. The first to respond when she called her “Mom.” That was what made her her mother.
Yu Mushan nodded firmly. “If you’re willing, I’ll be your mom for life.”
“Mom.”
Jiang Yisheng remembered how, when she was little, she called her aunt “Mom,” only to be shouted at by the other kids.
“That’s not your mom! She’s our mom!”
Little Jiang Yisheng had stood timidly in the corner, her tiny hands clenched, unsure what to do.
“Mom.”
“Yes.”
“Mom.”
“Mom’s here.”
No matter how many times she called, Yu Mushan always answered.
Jiang Yisheng cried softly on her shoulder.
She knew her presence had changed Yu Mushan’s destiny.
In the original novel, Yu Mushan had worked through her entire pregnancy. But because of her, the story changed. Yu Mushan was no longer Jiang Yisheng’s biological mother.
She could imagine the pressure Yu Mushan had faced to convince both families that they wouldn’t have their own biological child—only raise her.
“Mom.”
“Mm.”
“If I weren’t Jiang Yisheng… would you still love me?” Jiang Yisheng’s voice trembled.
“No matter who you are, Mom loves you,” Yu Mushan replied, hugging her even tighter. Her love for her overflowed.
Jiang Yisheng clutched her tightly, sobbing harder.
Watching them, Bai Chu’s eyes sparkled with tears, and a loving smile gently curved her lips.
