Chapter 52: So Many People Were Affected
In the morning, as the daylight poured in, Jiang Yisheng woke from her dream and looked at the still-sleeping Bai Chu.
She raised her hand and gently stroked Bai Chu’s cheek with her thumb. Thinking about the little girl from the dream, Jiang Yisheng pursed her lips, lost in thought.
When the two of them stepped out of the bedroom, Zhang Tao was already sitting on the sofa in the living room, working on her laptop.
“President Jiang, President Bai.” She stood up when she heard them coming.
“You’re here so early?” After everything that had happened yesterday, Jiang Yisheng found herself feeling unusually warm toward everyone she met.
“I just got here not long ago,” Zhang Tao replied, sharing the same sentiment. After what happened, she wasn’t going to let President Jiang out of her sight again.
As Jiang Yisheng and Bai Chu came downstairs together, Zhang Tao kept staring at Jiang Yisheng without blinking.
“What are you looking at? I washed my face,” Jiang Yisheng said uncomfortably, touching her face.
Just seconds later, Zhang Tao suddenly burst into tears.
“President Jiang, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. If I had stayed by your side every second, none of this would’ve happened.” Ever since the incident, Zhang Tao had been feeling incredibly guilty. If anything had happened to Jiang Yisheng, she knew she’d never forgive herself.
Seeing her tears falling one by one, Jiang Yisheng quickly looked around for tissues.
Bai Chu, quick on her feet, pulled out a tissue and handed it to Jiang Yisheng.
Jiang Yisheng took it and began gently wiping Zhang Tao’s tears, softly comforting her, “It’s not your fault. Don’t blame yourself. You did your best.”
Zhang Tao pressed her lips together, eyes and nose flushed red, sniffling as she looked at Jiang Yisheng.
“Have you eaten yet?” Jiang Yisheng asked.
Zhang Tao shook her head. She hadn’t been able to eat at all.
“Perfect, then let’s eat together here. Where are Mom and Dad?” Jiang Yisheng turned and looked upstairs. “Are they still sleeping?”
“Director Yu and Chairman Jiang left early this morning. They went to the company,” Zhang Tao replied.
“Alright then, let’s eat.”
During breakfast, Jiang Yisheng leaned her head lightly on Bai Chu’s shoulder while eating.
“Eat properly,” Bai Chu said as she peeled a boiled egg and placed it in Jiang Yisheng’s bowl.
“You’ve just quit your job. Can you keep me company and hang out with me for the next few days?” Jiang Yisheng bit her chopsticks, looking at her with soft, hopeful eyes.
Bai Chu took the chopsticks from her mouth and asked, “Where do you want to go?”
“Anywhere, as long as I’m with you.” Jiang Yisheng’s voice was sweet as she acted coy with her.
Zhang Tao, eating beside them, quickly lowered her head and shoveled food into her mouth, doing her best to reduce her presence.
“Alright, we’ll plan something together later,” Bai Chu nodded seriously, already thinking about making an itinerary.
“What plans do you have today?” Jiang Yisheng asked.
Bai Chu shook her head. She was originally supposed to visit You Ran’s place today, but after what happened to Jiang Yisheng yesterday, she couldn’t stop worrying and didn’t want to leave her alone.
“No plans.”
“So that means you can spend the whole day with me.” Jiang Yisheng’s eyes lit up.
Bai Chu didn’t respond immediately, but after meeting Jiang Yisheng’s eyes, she gave a small nod.
After breakfast, Jiang Yisheng brought Bai Chu back to the company.
But the moment they stepped inside, she noticed something was off.
The entire company was unusually quiet—even the sound of footsteps seemed deliberately light.
When the front desk staff saw Jiang Yisheng, she quickly stood up and bowed deeply. “President Jiang.”
“Hello,” Jiang Yisheng waved at her and smiled like usual.
But the receptionist immediately looked down, not daring to meet her eyes.
Jiang Yisheng didn’t think much of it and happily pulled Bai Chu toward the elevator.
Halfway up, the elevator stopped at the ninth floor. When the doors opened, someone stepped in but, upon seeing Jiang Yisheng, quickly backed out again. “President Jiang, I’m sorry.”
“Hey, come in,” Jiang Yisheng called.
But the person had already disappeared into the stairwell.
Then she remembered that Xie Xin and Youran were on the ninth floor, so she decided to visit them.
Pulling Bai Chu along, she approached the two. When they saw her, they immediately stood up.
“President Jiang,” He Youran greeted, eyes scanning Jiang Yisheng up and down with concern.
Xie Xin also looked at her, brows furrowed.
Seeing the worry in their eyes, Jiang Yisheng knew they must’ve heard about what happened yesterday.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine.” She even spun around once to prove it. “See? Totally fine.”
Then she grabbed Bai Chu’s hand. “But look at Bai Chu.”
Her hand was wrapped in thick gauze, with a bit of bl00d seeping through the center.
“What happened?” He Youran asked, frowning with concern.
Bai Chu quietly pulled her hand back. “Just a small cut.”
She didn’t like people seeing her wounds.
Hmph. Jiang Yisheng secretly grunted in her heart. She was definitely going to get revenge for Bai Chu.
“I was really scared yesterday. If it had been one second later, I might’ve been gone. If Bai Chu hadn’t come to save me, I’d be toast.” Jiang Yisheng pulled over a chair and began chatting with the two.
“President Jiang, you don’t know. We were in training yesterday when the company alarm suddenly went off. Then everyone was rushed into buses. We had no idea what was going on,” Xie Xin recounted.
“We only found out this morning. Director Yu and Chairman Jiang came in looking super serious and fired the entire logistics department.”
Jiang Yisheng’s eyes widened. “They fired everyone?”
“Yeah, that’s when we found out you were kidnapped yesterday. It scared us half to death.”
“But wasn’t it just the head of logistics? Why fire the whole department?” Jiang Yisheng frowned slightly. Getting into such a big company wasn’t easy—there had to be many innocent and hardworking people among them.
“This morning I saw Director Yu—her eyes could tear someone apart,” Xie Xin shuddered just thinking about it.
The more Jiang Yisheng listened, the more uncomfortable she felt. She stood up from her chair. “Let me come back and chat with you later. I need to go upstairs first.”
She turned to Bai Chu. “Wait here for me. I’ll be back soon.”
“Okay.”
Bai Chu nodded and watched Jiang Yisheng walk away. Her hand slowly clenched at her side. The shadow of yesterday’s events still loomed large. The moment Jiang Yisheng wasn’t by her side, anxiety crept in again.
In Yu Mushan’s Office
Yu Mushan and Jiang Hang sat across from each other with a tall stack of folders between them. Each held a document, reading intently.
“Mom, Dad.” Jiang Yisheng called out.
Both looked up immediately, and when they saw it was her, their expressions softened.
“You’re up early. Have you eaten?” Yu Mushan stood up and walked over to her.
“Mom, I heard you fired the entire logistics department?” Jiang Yisheng took her hand, asking uncertainly.
Yu Mushan guided her to the couch and held her hand. “Mom already made one mistake. I won’t allow any more danger to come near you.”
Her eyes were filled with unwavering determination.
“But there are so many innocent people. They shouldn’t have to suffer for someone else’s mistake. Please don’t fire them all,” Jiang Yisheng pleaded.
Yu Mushan was firm. “I can’t guarantee the person acted alone. But everyone we let go is being compensated double, according to the law.”
“How many people in total?” Jiang Yisheng’s voice grew smaller.
“Thirty-seven logistics staff, and sixty-nine temporary workers,” Yu Mushan replied honestly.
Jiang Yisheng bit her lip and slowly lowered her head.
She had come to this world and already changed the fate of so many people. Suddenly, her chest felt heavy, as if something were blocking her breath.
