Chapter 53: Successfully Passed
“Mom, I don’t want to drag innocent people into this,” Jiang Yisheng lowered her head, looking at their interlocked hands.
“Sweetheart, you need to understand how serious it is to have the general manager kidnapped from her own company. That beast was already taken away by the police last night. There has to be accountability for this. Firing them and compensating them financially was already the kindest decision your father and I could make,” Yu Mushan said seriously.
Jiang Yisheng sniffled and nodded.
Even though she had become a rich second-generation heir in the novel, her thoughts were still rooted in the perspective of a working-class person. She didn’t think about the big picture—she only cared whether workers could still put food on their tables.
Yu Mushan’s attitude was firm. Jiang Yisheng knew she couldn’t persuade her, so she gave up.
…
That evening, Jiang Yisheng went home with Bai Chu. The two of them lay in bed, helping each other apply face masks.
Jiang Yisheng lay on top of Bai Chu, stretching out her fingers to smooth out the wrinkles on Bai Chu’s mask.
Bai Chu held onto her arms and looked up at her.
Jiang Yisheng hummed a tune while gently massaging her.
“What song is that?” Bai Chu asked.
“Together No Matter How Far Apart,” Jiang Yisheng replied softly, careful not to move her lips too much.
“Never heard of it.” Bai Chu shook her head.
“How could that be? I’ll play the original for you.” Jiang Yisheng grabbed her phone from the side and, still lying on Bai Chu, searched for the song.
She typed in Together No Matter How Far Apart—no results.
“What? That’s weird.” She was puzzled.
Then she searched for G.E.M.—still no results.
What the hell? Not even the diva herself?
Jiang Yisheng was stunned, blinking blankly, not understanding.
She looked up and met Bai Chu’s curious eyes. After a brief pause, she quickly made something up: “It’s a song written by a friend of mine. She’s really talented.”
Bai Chu nodded seriously, completely believing her.
Jiang Yisheng silently apologized in her heart, Sorry, Ms. G.E.M.… just let me pretend to be your friend this once. Blame the system for not recording you into this world…
Jiang Yisheng lowered her head, rubbed her nose gently against Bai Chu’s, then rolled off her to lie on her own pillow. The two of them stared at the ceiling.
The weather was getting warmer, so Bai Chu had opened the window before getting into bed, letting some fresh air in.
A spring breeze rustled the curtains. With the blanket covering them, the temperature was just right—neither hot nor cold.
Lying together under the blanket, it didn’t take long for sleepiness to settle in.
Bai Chu quietly kept track of time, waiting for the moment to tell Jiang Yisheng to get up and wash her face.
But when she turned to speak, Jiang Yisheng was already asleep.
So she helped her remove the mask and did some simple cleaning.
After washing her own face and returning, Bai Chu looked at the small mound under the blanket and felt warmth bloom in her heart.
She gently slipped under the covers, reached for Jiang Yisheng’s hand, and threaded her fingers through hers, holding on tightly…
“Jiang Yisheng.”
Jiang Yisheng frowned and rubbed her nose, still sleeping.
“Jiang Yisheng.”
The system called her again, but she still didn’t wake up.
System: “…”
In her dream, Jiang Yisheng was enjoying a candlelit dinner with Bai Chu. Just as Bai Chu was about to say something sweet, the scene around her suddenly turned completely white.
Jiang Yisheng jolted upright, looking around for Bai Chu.
“Jiang Yisheng.”
The system’s mechanical voice echoed.
Standing in place with her hands on her hips, Jiang Yisheng looked annoyed. “Seriously? Do you have any manners? I was sleeping. Do you know how rude this is?”
System: “I called you outside, but you didn’t respond.”
“Well, that doesn’t mean you get to barge into my dream! What if I was… doing something else?” Her voice trailed off.
The system stayed silent.
“What do you want this time?” Jiang Yisheng said irritably, hating the sound of its voice.
“First of all, congratulations on turning misfortune into a blessing.”
Jiang Yisheng clenched her fists at her sides, glaring. “You’ve got some nerve saying that. You didn’t even come out to help when I was in danger.”
Still, the system said nothing.
“What, cat got your tongue? Feeling guilty? Or are you just an incompetent system that can only give me orders but can’t control anyone else?” Jiang Yisheng let out a full-on rant.
System: “…”
“Don’t you have something else to tell me?” the system quickly changed the topic.
Jiang Yisheng gave it a death glare, arms crossed. “I do.”
“Go ahead.”
“Was Jiang Yisheng never their biological daughter from the start? Or was that because I transmigrated into her and changed her fate?”
“She was never their biological daughter.”
“Then why wasn’t that mentioned in the novel?” Jiang Yisheng was confused.
“You were just a side character in that novel. Details like that weren’t important enough to include,” the system replied coldly.
Jiang Yisheng: “…”
She was so mad she could grind her molars into dust.
“But I am surprised by your reaction. You didn’t feel any sadness at all when you found out Yu Mushan wasn’t your real mother?” the system asked.
“Of course not. I think having parents like them is already a stroke of luck I stole from fate,” she said, smiling just thinking about having a mother. Her anger faded immediately.
“I cherish every single day I get to be with them. How could I feel sad?”
Jiang Yisheng was always someone who believed in being content with what she had.
“You really are… different now,” the system suddenly remarked.
“What?” Jiang Yisheng didn’t get it.
The system fell silent again.
Jiang Yisheng: “Tch, you’re so—”
“Oh right, you’re not even a person,” she corrected herself mid-sentence.
After mocking the system, something suddenly occurred to her. She frowned and asked, “Wait, but I remember the novel said Yu Mushan gave birth to a child after ten months of pregnancy?”
“So… has my arrival actually changed this world at all? My mom fired a bunch of people today, and I feel awful about it.”
“There have been changes—but not in this particular situation,” the system replied succinctly.
“What do you mean?” Jiang Yisheng wanted a clear explanation.
“I can’t tell you that,” the system said. This time it answered, but it might as well have stayed silent.
Jiang Yisheng rolled her eyes dramatically.
“So what did you come here for?” Just thinking about how her candlelit dinner with Bai Chu got interrupted made her mad again.
And part of her was also scared that the system was going to assign her some stupid mission related to An Hao again.
“No reason. Just wanted to chat.”
Jiang Yisheng grimaced.
She could tell the system was acting a little weird today, but since it didn’t give her any missions, she didn’t care anymore.
After the system left, the candlelit dinner scene returned in front of Jiang Yisheng again. The moment she saw Bai Chu, her smile returned.
“Node 0128.02 successfully passed.”
A mechanical voice recorded the data silently in the corner…
