Chapter 55: Filling the Gap
“You look for it yourself.” Yu Mushan pulled Bai Chu to sit down on the sofa, barely sparing Jiang Yisheng a glance.
Jiang Yisheng opened the shoe cabinet and squatted down, rummaging through it.
Jiang Hang chatted briefly with Bai Chu before dashing back into the kitchen with his apron on to continue cooking.
“Dad, help me find my slippers,” Jiang Yisheng called out as Jiang Hang passed by.
Jiang Hang paused, thought for a moment, and replied, “I forgot where they are. If you really can’t find them, just wear a disposable pair.”
And with that, he zipped off to the kitchen.
Jiang Yisheng: “…”
“Your hand is much better, but you still need to be careful,” Yu Mushan looked at Bai Chu’s palm and reminded her gently.
“Thank you, Auntie,” Bai Chu’s ears turned slightly red as she nodded earnestly.
“What hobbies do you usually have, Xiaobai?” Yu Mushan began chatting with her.
After a few exchanges, the two women’s peripheral vision caught sight of… some hideously ugly shoe covers.
Yu Mushan frowned in disgust and looked up at her daughter. “Jiang Yisheng, why on earth are you wearing shoe covers in the house?”
“I couldn’t find my slippers,” Jiang Yisheng scratched her head helplessly.
Yu Mushan patted Bai Chu’s hand and stood up to go look for them herself.
“Mom, don’t bother with the shoe cabinet, I already checked—it’s not there,” Jiang Yisheng called after her.
But Yu Mushan simply opened the cabinet and pulled out her slippers right away.
Jiang Yisheng: “???”
“They’re right here. What do you mean you couldn’t find them?” Yu Mushan scolded her with her hands on her hips.
Knowing she was in the wrong, Jiang Yisheng grinned sheepishly and ran over to quickly change into the slippers.
“But I swear I looked and they weren’t there…” she muttered under her breath.
Bai Chu sat on the sofa watching the interaction between Jiang Yisheng and Yu Mushan, feeling a deep sense of envy.
Sometimes, bl00d relations aren’t the most important thing.
She was truly happy for Jiang Yisheng, who had such loving parents.
After changing into her slippers, Jiang Yisheng ran over and collapsed bonelessly onto Bai Chu, clinging to her like a koala.
Yu Mushan smiled at the sight and sat nearby.
Soon after, Jiang Hang brought the final dish to the table and called everyone over to eat.
Taking off his apron, he glanced at Yu Mushan with a hopeful look.
Yu Mushan immediately knew what he wanted and gave him a side-eye before declaring, “Only one drink. No more.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Jiang Hang saluted and happily went to fetch the wine.
Bai Chu and Jiang Yisheng returned after washing their hands just in time to see this exchange.
Yu Mushan felt a bit awkward and quickly explained, “Old Jiang drinks too much when eating out—his stomach’s suffering for it. He needs to cut back.”
Bai Chu smiled knowingly, a warm swell rising in her chest and a sting in her nose she forced back down.
“Uncle, I’ll have a drink with you,” Bai Chu said sincerely.
Jiang Hang looked at her with delight. “That’s great to hear!”
Seeing Bai Chu was drinking, Jiang Yisheng perked up too. “I want one!”
“Sure thing!”
Finally, Jiang Hang looked over at Yu Mushan.
Arms folded, she raised her chin. “I could outdrink you all ten rounds.”
Jiang Hang burst out laughing and fetched four wine glasses from the cabinet.
At the table, Bai Chu sat with her hands neatly folded in her lap, waiting for the elders to begin.
But Jiang Yisheng went right ahead, placing a piece of spare rib into Bai Chu’s bowl, then served her parents, and finally took one for herself. She popped it into her mouth and gave Jiang Hang a thumbs-up as she chewed.
Yu Mushan, smiling indulgently, picked up her chopsticks and served food to Bai Chu too.
“Try your uncle’s specialty dish,” she said warmly.
“Thank you, Auntie,” Bai Chu finally picked up her chopsticks and took a bite.
After savoring it, she nodded sincerely, meeting Jiang Hang’s hopeful gaze. “It’s really delicious.”
Pleased, Jiang Hang’s eyes crinkled. “Yisheng told me you’re great at cooking too. We should have a cook-off sometime!”
“My cooking can’t compare to yours, Uncle,” Bai Chu replied modestly.
“Alright,” Yu Mushan said with a smile, lifting her glass. “Today is a joyful occasion.”
Everyone paused, picked up their wine glasses.
“We’re so happy to have Xiaobai home for dinner,” Yu Mushan said to Bai Chu.
Bai Chu’s gaze was clear. “Thank you, Uncle and Auntie.”
“We’re family now. No need to keep saying thank you,” Yu Mushan said gently, taking Bai Chu’s hand.
“Your uncle and I truly like you a lot. As a mother, I only have one request for you both: be safe and happy. Money doesn’t matter, careers don’t matter. Living a peaceful, simple life is the greatest thing.”
Bai Chu nodded deeply, her throat tightening.
“To you both—cheers!” Yu Mushan raised her glass.
“Cheers.”
The crisp clink of wine glasses echoed over the dining table, followed by laughter and warm conversation.
The camera zooms out. Under a moonlit sky, the lights from the windows spill into the night. A gentle spring breeze lingers by the window, reluctant to leave, wanting to peek at the warmth inside.
After dinner, only Yu Mushan and Bai Chu remained sober. Jiang Yisheng and Jiang Hang’s faces were flushed.
Yu Mushan scoffed, arms folded, watching them. “Can’t hold your liquor, but always try to act tough.”
“It’s getting late. Stay over tonight,” she said, turning to Bai Chu.
Stay over… at home.
Bai Chu’s heart skipped a beat. She pressed her lips together and nodded. “Okay.”
Yu Mushan walked them upstairs to the room.
At the door, she paused and gently nudged Jiang Yisheng into Bai Chu’s arms.
“Alright, sleep early. Sleep in tomorrow—your uncle and I are taking the day off too.” She said this to spare Bai Chu from feeling awkward about sleeping late.
Young people need sleep to be full of energy, after all.
Bai Chu stood at the door and politely waved. “Goodnight, Auntie.”
“Go rest, you two,” Yu Mushan waved back, looking at them fondly.
Only after Bai Chu saw her leave did she close the door.
The room was pitch black. As she turned around, a warm little bundle crashed into her arms.
Bai Chu held Jiang Yisheng’s arms to steady her.
Jiang Yisheng pinned her against the door, cheeks flushed, looking up at her.
Bai Chu couldn’t help but smile at the sight and lightly tapped Jiang Yisheng’s nose.
Jiang Yisheng shook her head, not letting her touch more.
She lifted her chin and tried to kiss Bai Chu.
Bai Chu knew what she wanted and just smiled, teasing her by staying just out of reach.
Annoyed, Jiang Yisheng huffed loudly.
Bai Chu laughed, her eyes soft and loving.
Pouting, Jiang Yisheng grabbed her by the neck and yanked her down.
Bai Chu gave in, bending down to kiss her burning lips, her hands naturally resting on Jiang Yisheng’s slim waist.
Maybe it was the alcohol—neither wanted to stop. The air between them ignited, buzzing with tension.
Bai Chu’s hands wandered instinctively over Jiang Yisheng’s body.
Someone moved. They kissed their way from the door to the bed.
Bai Chu’s hot breath slid down Jiang Yisheng’s neck. Jiang Yisheng clung to her, breathing erratically.
When Bai Chu’s hand met the bare skin of her waist, Jiang Yisheng trembled. Her eyes fluttered open, dazed.
But Bai Chu didn’t go further—she just kept kissing her neck gently.
Anxious, Jiang Yisheng unbuttoned her top two buttons and clung to Bai Chu’s neck.
Bai Chu inhaled sharply.
Jiang Yisheng felt her pause for a second before the kisses slowly trailed downward again.
Her chest rose and fell; Bai Chu’s breath was buried against it—hot, heavy, restrained.
As Bai Chu kissed lower, Jiang Yisheng grew weak, one hand clutching her shirt, the other gripping the sheets nervously.
“Yisheng…” Bai Chu’s voice was husky and low.
Jiang Yisheng opened her eyes, dazed.
“It’s time to sleep,” Bai Chu said, her breathing still ragged, stealing one last glance at the view beneath the shirt.
She gently pulled her hand away and buttoned the shirt back up.
Jiang Yisheng hadn’t reacted yet when she was pulled up.
Bai Chu fetched a pair of pajamas from the wardrobe and shoved them into her hands. “Go shower.”
“Oh.” Jiang Yisheng obeyed every word like a robot and walked into the bathroom.
Bai Chu let out a heavy breath and opened the window to air out the heat.
Still in Yisheng’s parents’ house… how did things get so out of hand…
She slapped her face lightly, trying to cool off.
When she came out, Jiang Yisheng was already asleep.
She climbed into bed and, in the moonlight, gazed at her lover.
Jiang Yisheng’s cheeks were still flushed. She lay on her side, nestled in the blankets, breathing softly.
Bai Chu couldn’t help but smile. She leaned over and kissed her forehead gently.
Sensing her presence, Jiang Yisheng snuggled close, wrapping her arms tightly around her waist and burying her face in her neck.
The warmth of the girl in her arms seeped through the thin fabric, and Bai Chu held her tightly.
The empty space in her heart was slowly being filled—gently and completely.
