Chapter 6: How Can Someone Cause This Much Trouble?
Jiang Yisheng chased after Bai Chu with the file in her arms, while Zhang Tao also got out of the car to follow Jiang Yisheng.
“Hello, please show your invitation,” the security guard at the door stopped Bai Chu.
Bai Chu pulled the invitation slip from her pocket and handed it over.
“Welcome, President Bai. Please come in,” the guard stepped aside respectfully.
By the time Jiang Yisheng reached the entrance, Bai Chu had already gone in. She hugged the file awkwardly and said to the guard, “I don’t have an invitation…”
“President Jiang, do you need me to assist you with something?” The guard stood with his hands neatly in front of him, confused by what Jiang Yisheng was doing, glancing toward the approaching Zhang Tao for help.
Zhang Tao ran over, panting, and whispered to Jiang Yisheng, “You don’t have an invitation…”
Jiang Yisheng suddenly smacked her forehead. “Right, right, this is my own company!”
Realizing this, she immediately ran inside, trying to catch up to Bai Chu.
Bai Chu, having just entered, missed the previous elevator and was waiting for the next one when Jiang Yisheng caught up with her, cheerfully jogging over. “Sister Bai Chu, you forgot your file!”
Just as Bai Chu was about to respond, the elevator arrived.
The elevator was nearly full—packed with employees coming up from the underground garage.
Someone inside spoke up politely, “President Jiang, you go ahead. I’ll catch the next one.”
“No need, no need, we can all fit,” Jiang Yisheng said as she squeezed in, still holding the file and guiding Bai Chu by the elbow into the elevator.
After they got in, Bai Chu quietly pulled her arm away, clearly unwilling to have physical contact.
“Peachy, you take the next one,” Jiang Yisheng waved to Zhang Tao. “I’ll wait upstairs.”
The elevator became unusually quiet with Jiang Yisheng’s presence. In the tight space, she stood very close to Bai Chu, close enough to smell her pleasant fragrance with each breath.
Holding the file, Jiang Yisheng sneaked a glance at Bai Chu.
Bai Chu was looking up at the floor indicator. Jiang Yisheng quickly averted her gaze to avoid being caught staring, also looking up at the screen.
Her skin’s so nice… she thought to herself, awestruck.
Ding—the elevator reached the 22nd floor.
The doors opened, but no one moved. The person nearest the door pressed the open button.
They were all waiting for the higher-ups to get off first. Jiang Yisheng exited and stood outside, waiting for Bai Chu.
Once Bai Chu stepped out, the others followed in succession.
Not knowing where the conference room was, Jiang Yisheng trailed behind Bai Chu, distracted by anxious thoughts. Oh no, it’s happening. If I see my “father” and don’t recognize him, I’m doomed…
Peachy hasn’t even come up yet, and now there’s no one to help me…
Suddenly, Bai Chu stopped walking, and Jiang Yisheng didn’t notice—she bumped right into Bai Chu’s back. Due to the momentum, Bai Chu stumbled forward, and as she extended her hand for balance, she accidentally knocked off the wig of the man in front of her who was signing in.
Everyone present froze in place.
Jiang Yisheng stood there, stunned, her jaw almost on the floor.
How could someone cause such a huge disaster?!
Both Bai Chu and the man turned beet red.
Jiang Yisheng reacted immediately. There was no way she’d let Bai Chu take the fall for this.
She quickly stepped in front of her and apologized, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, it was all my fault. I didn’t notice someone was signing in and accidentally bumped into her.”
She squatted down and picked up the wig, about to help the man put it back on.
“No worries, President Jiang. I can manage,” the man waved her off and took his wig back.
Other attendees, finally catching on, resumed their conversations, trying to ease the awkwardness while still stealing glances at the situation.
The man calmly put his wig back on and used his fingers to tidy up the disheveled strands. He gave Jiang Yisheng a composed nod and walked off to take his seat.
Jiang Yisheng internally repeated her apologies a thousand times, then slowly turned to face Bai Chu.
Bai Chu looked at her with a complicated expression, disbelief in her eyes. Her voice lost its edge: “President Jiang, even if you hate me, can you find a less humiliating way?”
She’d known Jiang Yisheng to be vengeful and sharp, and had imagined countless ways she might be targeted. But every time, Jiang Yisheng still managed to surprise her—each time landing her in an impossibly awkward spot.
“I don’t… Why would I hate you?” Jiang Yisheng tried to explain but couldn’t find the words.
Bai Chu no longer wanted to engage. She signed in and went straight to her seat.
Zhang Tao finally arrived, slightly out of breath.
Seeing her, Jiang Yisheng lowered her head in guilt.
“What’s wrong, President Jiang?” Zhang Tao asked, her heart sinking at her boss’s expression.
“I wasn’t watching where I was going and bumped into Bai Chu. She accidentally pulled off some uncle’s wig,” Jiang Yisheng whispered nervously as she led Zhang Tao out of the meeting room.
Zhang Tao forced down her inner shock. I was gone for five minutes, and this happened?!
“Who was it?” Zhang Tao asked, half-dreading the answer.
Jiang Yisheng subtly pointed at the man. Zhang Tao followed her gaze, immediately pulled her head back, and gasped sharply.
“That’s President Luo Kang—President Luo. He and your father had a falling-out earlier this year over a project. Your father invited him today to break the ice…”
“Oh god,” Jiang Yisheng muttered, chewing on her fingernails in panic. “Will my ‘dad’ disown me?”
Please no… I haven’t even fully enjoyed the rich-kid lifestyle yet!
“Who wants to disown you?” a deep voice suddenly chimed in.
Zhang Tao straightened up. “Chairman Jiang.”
Jiang Yisheng turned toward the voice. The man was a bit chubby, but his suit fit well. His round face beamed as he smiled, eyes crinkling warmly.
From Zhang Tao’s words, Jiang Yisheng realized this was her novel-dad.
Not sure what to call him, she awkwardly smiled and muttered, “Hi~”
“Hi what? Didn’t you tell your mom you weren’t coming?” Jiang Hang teased, eyes full of affection.
“I changed my mind last-minute.” Jiang Yisheng couldn’t quite meet his eyes, afraid he’d see through her.
“Alright, whatever my daughter says goes.” Jiang Hang chuckled warmly and ruffled her hair.
“Um…” Jiang Yisheng decided to confess. “I think I caused a bit of trouble.”
“What happened?” Jiang Hang’s smile faded slightly, looking concerned.
After she explained, Jiang Hang burst into hearty laughter. “I knew that old man couldn’t have more hair than me!”
“…It really doesn’t matter?” she asked timidly.
“It’s fine,” Jiang Hang waved it off. “You want to sit in on the meeting?”
She shook her head—no way she wanted to go in there.
“Alright, go have some fun. Your mom and I will call you when we’re done, and we’ll head home for dinner,” Jiang Hang said, glancing at his watch. “Where is she, anyway?”
Just then, a gentle, elegant voice called out: “Xiao Sheng? Weren’t you not coming?”
Jiang Yisheng turned to see a familiar face.
She hadn’t really looked at her novel-mom the other day. But today she took a proper look: the woman wore a white V-neck dress shirt, tucked into her pants with a striking gold belt buckle.
As she walked closer, her hair was pinned up neatly, with styled bangs framing her face, swaying with each step. Her eyes were deep, her nose dainty, and her red lips gave her a powerful presence—elegant and feminine.
She looked at Jiang Yisheng with an almost suffocating warmth.
So beautiful, so poised, Jiang Yisheng thought to herself.
“I gave a friend a ride,” she replied to Yu Mushan’s earlier question.
“You seem different today. Something on your mind?” Yu Mushan asked gently, keenly sensing something off.
Jiang Yisheng stayed silent. She didn’t know what to say.
Yu Mushan came over, pinched her cheek softly, then gave it a playful squeeze.
“She accidentally pulled off Old Luo’s wig earlier,” Jiang Hang chimed in mischievously.
Yu Mushan chuckled. “Oh, this child.”
“If you don’t want to attend the meeting, just go wander around. Your dad and I will call you when we’re done. Think about what you want to eat for dinner,” she patted her back.
“Okay,” Jiang Yisheng nodded.
Yu Mushan took Jiang Hang’s arm and the couple walked into the meeting room together.
Jiang Yisheng didn’t go anywhere. She stood at the door, quietly watching the pair.
In the novel, Jiang Yisheng’s parents adored her. The author described them as treating her like a treasure—afraid she’d fall if held, afraid she’d melt if kissed.
If only they were really my parents, she thought wistfully.
She unconsciously gripped the edge of the file folder.
Suddenly, she realized something. Oh no—Bai Chu’s file!
“Peachy, give me a hand and make a copy!” she quickly handed the folder over.
The file got reprinted—but the meeting had already started, and it wasn’t appropriate to walk in now.
She spotted a staff member organizing teapots nearby. A plan formed in her mind.
About an hour into the meeting, a staff member came in to refill tea.
“Excuse me, President Bai, this is from President Jiang.” While pouring water, the staffer quietly placed the folder on Bai Chu’s desk.
Bai Chu opened it to find the documents freshly reprinted. Tucked inside the front page was a small note: “I’m sorry!”
Next to it was a doodle of a round-headed, big-eyed face with a few teardrops.
Bai Chu scoffed quietly and closed the folder.
A moment later, she opened it again.
After glancing at the drawing, she scoffed once more—then shut it again.
