Chapter 64: Whether Good or Evil, Everyone Is a Pitiful Soul
“The sea breeze is a little strong,” Jiang Yisheng said, shaking her head as she looked at Bai Chu with red-rimmed eyes.
“Shall we head back then?” Bai Chu brought Jiang Yisheng’s hands to her lips, blowing warm breath onto them before gently rubbing them between her palms.
“Okay.” Jiang Yisheng nodded and walked with Bai Chu over to the vendor.
Their eyes fell on the sketch, and this time it was Bai Chu who gasped in surprise. “It’s so beautiful.”
Jiang Yisheng hadn’t been paying attention to the painting until Bai Chu spoke.
Under the orange sunset, the two girls sat side by side. The sea breeze tousled Jiang Yisheng’s hair, strands of it brushing against Bai Chu’s cheek. Their hands were tightly clasped, and both wore blissful smiles.
A soft smile tugged at the corner of Jiang Yisheng’s lips.
Sensing her low spirits, Bai Chu gently squeezed the back of her hand and tilted her head to look at her. “Isn’t it really pretty?”
Meeting Bai Chu’s excited gaze, Jiang Yisheng quickly adjusted her mood and smiled as she always did, nodding firmly. “Yes! Super pretty!”
The vendor took the painting down and handed it to them. “I wish you both a joyful life and everlasting happiness.”
“Thank you.” Bai Chu received the painting with both hands and gave a small bow. “And I wish you prosperity and peace.”
The vendor stood up with a soft smile on his face as he watched them.
“Let’s go,” Bai Chu said, intertwining her fingers with Jiang Yisheng’s and waving goodbye to the vendor.
As they walked toward the hotel, Jiang Yisheng suddenly turned back to look at the vendor.
“Mister, we’ll see each other again, right?”
She called out to him. The sea breeze carried her voice, making her words clear and sincere.
The vendor only smiled without responding and waved at her.
Unwilling to give up, Jiang Yisheng shouted again, “Your wife would want you to return home safe and sound too!”
The vendor stood frozen. When her words reached him, it was as if something struck him in the chest—something deep within him began to crumble.
After a long while, he slowly raised his hand again and waved toward Jiang Yisheng and Bai Chu.
“The sunset is beautiful,” he murmured in place, filled with emotion.
Back at the hotel, Bai Chu immediately pushed Jiang Yisheng toward the bathroom. “Go take a hot shower first. I’ll grab your pajamas.”
“Okay,” Jiang Yisheng obediently agreed.
The sound of running water filled the room. Warm water flowed over every inch of her skin.
As she lathered the body wash into a foam and spread it across her body, Jiang Yisheng fell into deep thought.
In this world, everyone had once wished to die. Whether they were good people or bad people, they were all pitiful souls.
Suddenly, Jiang Yisheng froze.
Her mother too?
The thought made her eyes flush red again.
She had been such a kind woman—why did she come to this world? Had she become the main character yet? Was her real life so unhappy?
Jiang Yisheng couldn’t even recall how she finished showering. When she came back to her senses, she was already wrapped tightly in a thick blanket and carried to the bed by Bai Chu.
Worried, Bai Chu pressed the back of her hand to Jiang Yisheng’s forehead.
“Thank goodness, no fever.”
After saying that, Bai Chu leaned down and kissed the tip of Jiang Yisheng’s nose, preparing to get up and take her own shower.
Suddenly, she felt a small tug on her shirt.
“Where are you going?” Jiang Yisheng furrowed her brows tightly, looking at her helplessly.
Bai Chu chuckled softly and pinched her cheek. “I’m just going to take a shower. Be good and wait for me, okay?”
But Jiang Yisheng still didn’t let go.
Bai Chu sensed something was wrong. She lay back down beside her, her gaze becoming serious.
“You don’t seem quite yourself today.”
The moment she said that, Jiang Yisheng’s eyes turned red again, and she couldn’t hold it in anymore.
Seeing her cry, Bai Chu grew even more flustered.
She held Jiang Yisheng’s hand and kissed it gently, her eyes fixed on her, hoping she would open up.
“I just feel… so happy,” Jiang Yisheng sniffled and said softly.
Bai Chu looked at her, puzzled.
“It’s because I’m too happy… that just thinking about losing you makes me so sad.” As soon as Jiang Yisheng spoke those words, she couldn’t stop crying. Her sobs came in short, sharp breaths.
Bai Chu quickly grabbed tissues to wipe away her tears.
She pulled Jiang Yisheng into her arms and soothed her gently. “That won’t happen. I can’t live without you either. We won’t be apart.”
Jiang Yisheng shut her eyes tightly and leaned into Bai Chu’s shoulder, quietly sobbing.
