Chapter 65: Not Willing to See That Ending
Bai Chu held Jiang Yisheng tightly, feeling her sobs as she gently stroked the back of her head.
Jiang Yisheng clung to Bai Chu’s neck, unwilling to let her go even an inch.
She buried her face in the warmth of Bai Chu’s neck, feeling the pulse beating beneath her skin.
Her temples throbbed with pain as her mind drifted to the plot of the novel, specifically the events that had happened to Bai Chu.
One day, Bai Chu happened to be driving past the He family’s house and thought to buy something to bring over. As she approached the door, she heard He Dafang and Gao Tingyuan arguing inside.
She initially wanted to knock and try to stop the fight, but the next moment, she suddenly heard her father’s name.
“Can’t you stop gambling? Look at the state our family is in and you’re still gambling?!”
“You damned woman, don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong.”
“I’m meddling? If I hadn’t meddled, could you have afforded to raise the Bai family’s daughter?”
“Oh please. Aren’t you living off their money now? You think you’d even have this house without them?”
“If you hadn’t gambled all those years ago, would you have killed Bai Renzhi? If you hadn’t killed him, the company wouldn’t have collapsed! If he were still alive today, your retirement pension would be tens of thousands! Sure, Bai Chu can make money, but she gives all that money to police and private investigators. And me? How much have I gotten out of it? I spent everything I got on you two! What the hell did I even gain from this?”
“Bastard! What the hell did you just say? You trying to die?!”
A loud scraping sound came from inside, as if furniture was being dragged, followed by hysterical screaming.
The things in Bai Chu’s hands fell to the ground.
She never would have imagined that the people she had wholeheartedly wanted to repay were the ones responsible for her father’s death.
She didn’t remember how she got home, or how many days she locked herself inside her room.
When she finally came out, she drove straight to the He family’s home.
He Dafang was lying on the sofa smoking. When he saw Bai Chu arrive empty-handed, he only lazily opened his eyes and didn’t say a word.
Gao Tingyuan was in the kitchen cooking, with a fresh bruise on the corner of her mouth.
At dinner, Bai Chu stared at the chili peppers in her bowl for a long time before she finally spoke:
“What really happened to my parents back then—was it really just an accident?”
The table fell silent for two seconds, then came the sound of chopsticks being slammed down.
“Why do you keep asking the same thing over and over? How many times do I have to tell you it was an accident? Didn’t you investigate it yourself? Don’t believe your own findings? Don’t believe us either? What the hell do you want?” He Dafang was still angry from his recent fight with Gao Tingyuan, and Bai Chu had stopped giving money to the household. Now she was pressing on this issue again, and he erupted in rage.
The last glimmer of light in Bai Chu’s eyes slowly faded, her hope turning to dead silence.
She calmly picked out the chili from her bowl and placed it on the table, then continued eating as if she hadn’t heard anything, as if she were swallowing all of He Dafang’s rage.
After leaving the He family’s house, Bai Chu drove around Huanjiang Road in circles. After three rounds, she drove straight to the police station.
She explained everything to the officers, and the detective who received her said there was no concrete evidence but promised to reopen the investigation.
A few days later, Bai Chu found out that He Dafang had already secretly greased the palms of the police. Even with a new investigation, the result would be the same: nothing.
In the dim light, Bai Chu quietly peeled an apple, watching a photo on the table of He Dafang having dinner with the police chief.
Since that was the case, Bai Chu decided to handle it her own way.
Once the apple was peeled, Bai Chu called He Youran.
She didn’t speak right away when the call connected.
“What’s wrong, Chu Chu?” He Youran’s voice came from the other end.
Still, Bai Chu said nothing.
“Chu Chu?” she asked again.
A few seconds later, Bai Chu finally responded faintly, “Mm. Nothing. Just wanted to see what you were doing.”
“Working overtime at the company. Ugh, I’m so swamped these days,” He Youran complained, her voice casual.
They chatted briefly, and then Bai Chu found an excuse to hang up.
She would make He Dafang pay in bl00d. But as for He Youran…
Bai Chu lowered her eyes.
An hour later, He Youran burst into Bai Chu’s house.
She was carrying a steaming box of dumplings.
Under Bai Chu’s surprised gaze, she opened the takeout container while laughing, “I figured you probably didn’t eat yet. Let’s share some takeout tonight, okay? Also… let me crash at your place.”
Bai Chu ate two dumplings, then suddenly looked up at her and said, “Next weekend, can you help me take care of something in Zhe City?”
“Sure! I’ll be done with my project by then,” He Youran agreed without hesitation.
That night, Bai Chu stood at the door of the guest room, looking at He Youran’s back and softly murmured, “I’m sorry,” before slowly closing the door.
On the day He Youran went to Zhe City, Bai Chu returned to the He family’s home.
She carried several bottles of expensive wine, which made He Dafang overjoyed.
“Auntie, I’ll cook today. You take a break,” Bai Chu said while rolling up her sleeves and heading into the kitchen.
Gao Tingyuan was delighted and immediately came out of the kitchen, plopped on the couch, and started cracking sunflower seeds.
While cooking, Bai Chu secretly turned on the gas and drugged all the food.
Once He Dafang and Gao Tingyuan passed out at the table, she poured wine all over He Dafang and herself.
Then, she called the police, asking them to send someone immediately, and specifically requested that the same police chief come alone.
The police were hesitant to send anyone in. Bai Chu offered to trade Gao Tingyuan for the chief.
She had never intended to kill Gao Tingyuan—maybe it was for He Youran, maybe it was because she pitied the woman—but she wanted her to live.
She dragged Gao Tingyuan out and handed her over to the officers waiting outside. When the chief came in, she was holding a lighter and warned him not to move.
When he tried to snatch the lighter, Bai Chu swiftly lit He Dafang’s clothes and threw the lighter into the kitchen.
With a loud boom, everything inside the house was consumed in the explosion.
Hatred, greed, selfishness, regret—all reduced to ashes, scattered across the city with the thick black smoke.
And with that, Bai Chu used up her final chance.
Once she returned to the real world, she might end her life at any moment—any time, any place, in any way…
Jiang Yisheng shook her head hard.
She couldn’t accept an ending like that for Bai Chu.
She was going to save her.
Seeing Jiang Yisheng cry even harder, Bai Chu looked up, her eyes soft like a big, wet puppy.
She leaned in and kissed away the tears at the corners of Jiang Yisheng’s eyes, one by one.
She didn’t know why Jiang Yisheng was crying so fiercely, but what she did know was that every time she cried, her own heart ached terribly.
“Do you love me?” Jiang Yisheng suddenly asked.
“I do.” Bai Chu, completely unconcerned about being shy anymore, answered her honestly without hesitation.
