Chapter 66: What If One Day I Can’t Find You?
Jiang Yisheng opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she swallowed the words back down.
She hugged Bai Chu’s shoulders tightly, and her sobs gradually quieted.
Feeling Jiang Yisheng’s emotions finally settling, Bai Chu gently leaned back a little and looked down at her, her eyes full of worry.
Jiang Yisheng’s eyes were red, her brows furrowed as she looked at Bai Chu.
If you love me so much, why don’t you love yourself?
She pressed her lips together, silently scolding Bai Chu in her heart.
“Go take a shower,” Jiang Yisheng said softly, wiping her face with her hand.
But Bai Chu just continued to hold her, unwilling to move.
Jiang Yisheng gave her shoulder a little push. “Go on.”
Only then did Bai Chu slowly get up, still looking back at her with concern.
Jiang Yisheng grinned a little and gently pinched her ear, urging her once more.
Seeing Jiang Yisheng in a much better mood, Bai Chu finally agreed to go shower.
Jiang Yisheng lay down with her eyes closed, listening to the sound of water from the bathroom. She didn’t dare fall asleep.
She was afraid that if she did, she’d wake up back in the real world and never see Bai Chu again.
She didn’t know how long had passed when a faint scent wafted past her nose.
Jiang Yisheng opened her eyes and saw Bai Chu sitting beside her in pajamas, with water still dripping from her hair.
“Why didn’t you dry your hair?” Jiang Yisheng asked.
Bai Chu rubbed at it roughly with a towel. “It’s fine. It’ll dry soon.”
As she spoke, she started to lie down beside Jiang Yisheng.
“Nope, you have to dry it properly.” Jiang Yisheng reached out to stop her.
She flipped off the bed, grabbed the hair dryer, and stood behind Bai Chu, gently drying her hair.
The sound of the dryer filled the room as Bai Chu turned her head to gaze out at the sea view through the window.
At night, the tide had receded. The ocean was pitch black, with only a few streetlights still glowing near the shore.
She silently stared at one of the lamps, lost in thought.
Jiang Yisheng, focused on drying her hair carefully, kept using her left hand to move Bai Chu’s strands aside so the hot air wouldn’t burn her.
During a pause, she looked up. Beneath those long lashes, Bai Chu’s eyes shimmered with light, but there was a trace of dazedness in them.
Jiang Yisheng quickly lowered her gaze, blinked away a tear from the corner of her eye, and moved her hands even more gently.
Once the hair was dry, Jiang Yisheng combed it out, then cleaned the floor of any fallen strands before climbing back into bed and nestling into Bai Chu’s arms.
The two of them held each other tightly and slowly drifted off to sleep to the sound of each other’s breathing.
…
The next morning, before dawn, Jiang Yisheng woke up. Her mind was heavy, and she hadn’t slept well.
She looked at the sky outside, gradually turning blue, and suddenly wanted to watch the sunrise with Bai Chu.
Her lips curved into a soft smile as she leaned into Bai Chu and gently pecked the corner of her lips.
Bai Chu was a light sleeper. Even before Jiang Yisheng could fully move, her eyes were already opening, quickly becoming clear.
Jiang Yisheng gave her an awkward grin. “Wanna go see the sunrise?”
Bai Chu lowered her head and kissed her back, lightly biting her lower lip.
“Let’s go,” she said immediately, pulling Jiang Yisheng out of bed.
They bundled up in warm clothes and walked slowly along the beach toward the sea.
More and more people were gathering on the shore to watch the sunrise.
Shivering from the cold, Jiang Yisheng huddled her shoulders and nudged Bai Chu. “I always wanted to see the sunrise when I came here before, but I was too lazy to get up. I only ever saw one sunset—and that was with you.”
“That was the only one.”
Bai Chu gently rubbed her frozen red nose and asked indulgently, “So why are you able to get up today?”
“Because I want to watch another sunrise with you,” Jiang Yisheng said, gazing up at her. “I want to do a lot of things with you.”
Bai Chu smiled slowly, wrapped her arm around Jiang Yisheng’s waist, and held her close.
The two of them leaned into each other, watching as the soft golden light began to rise in the distance.
“Bai Chu,” Jiang Yisheng whispered, leaning on her shoulder, “what if one day I can’t find you anymore?”
Bai Chu turned her head, silent for a few seconds.
Jiang Yisheng quickly added, “I mean, just hypothetically—what if I got transported into a novel and you did too, and we didn’t remember each other’s faces? How would we recognize each other?”
Bai Chu inhaled softly, thought for a moment, and said, “I would definitely recognize you at a glance.”
Jiang Yisheng sat up indignantly. “What’s that supposed to mean? You think I wouldn’t recognize you at a glance?”
Bai Chu shook her head and chuckled. “I didn’t say that.”
Jiang Yisheng lightly pinched her arm. “But you meant it!”
Bai Chu flicked her forehead and suddenly ran off.
Jiang Yisheng covered her forehead and chased after her. “You’re not getting away!”
They weaved around the crowd and ran along the beach, laughing wildly and sweetly.
When Bai Chu turned a corner, Jiang Yisheng blocked her path. With nowhere to go, she surrendered.
She threw her arms around Jiang Yisheng, lovingly rubbing the top of her head.
Jiang Yisheng, still pouting, smacked her back twice in mock annoyance.
The sun slowly rose above the sea, and the first rays of light bathed them in warmth.
The two girls held each other on the beach, laughing, playing, their hair tousled by the sea breeze glowing with golden light—radiant and full of life.
“Even if I forgot you, the moment I kiss you, I’d recognize you immediately.”
Jiang Yisheng lay in Bai Chu’s arms, looking up at her.
“Why?”
“Because I’ve only ever kissed you. I’ll never forget what that feels like—not in this life or the next.”
She said it with immense pride.
Bai Chu lowered her head and playfully frowned. “So if you were trying to find me, wouldn’t that mean you’d have to kiss a bunch of people?”
Jiang Yisheng scratched her head. “No way! I was just making a point.”
“Smart mouth,” Bai Chu said as she flicked her forehead again.
Jiang Yisheng shook her head and leaned against her, both of them watching the sun rise over the horizon.
Jiang Yisheng’s hand gently touched the shell bracelet on Bai Chu’s left wrist, her fingertips tracing the tiny ridges and curves.
Around them, people took out their phones to take pictures and videos, but Jiang Yisheng and Bai Chu simply held each other and watched the sunrise. The happiness they felt at that moment was too precious to interrupt with a camera. They just wanted to feel it deeply with their hearts.
…
On the morning of their return to Jiang City, Jiang Yisheng had just woken up when Zhang Tao entered to help her pack.
“I can do it myself,” Jiang Yisheng said, scratching her messy hair.
“President Bai went to get breakfast for you. Let me handle the packing. You can go wash up,” Zhang Tao said as she carefully folded Jiang Yisheng’s clothes and placed them in the suitcase.
Seeing she wouldn’t win this one, Jiang Yisheng gave in.
She shuffled toward the bathroom in her slippers, but then suddenly heard a sniffle behind her.
Jiang Yisheng turned back and squatted down to look at Zhang Tao.
Sure enough, Zhang Tao’s eyes were red.
