- Chapter 2 - Eating Watermelon
The name Tang Huan’s parents gave her, ‘Huan,’ meant ‘joy,’ and they only wished for her to live a life of happiness and freedom from worry.
However, Tang Huan developed a sudden illness as a child and had been fighting it for years. Despite her best efforts to cooperate with the treatment, her condition continued to worsen.
One day, Tang Huan received a novel called “Lord of All” from a nurse.
She only read the first half of the book, which told the story of a boy named Ren Jingmu who grew up in an immortal sect, fell into the demonic realm, and eventually became its king.
The reason Ren Jingmu left the immortal sect was the death of his beloved ‘white moonlight,’ Qin Su.
Ren Jingmu suspected that the elder’s adopted daughter, Tang Huan, had killed Qin Su. However, the immortal sect, out of consideration for Tang Huan’s foster mother, did not conduct a full investigation. Ren Jingmu was furious and left the sect to descend into the demonic realm. He eventually led the demons to attack the immortal sect, where he found the now-insane Tang Huan, who had been imprisoned according to the sect’s rules. He tortured her in every imaginable way, flaying her alive and imprisoning her in a dark dungeon.
She hadn’t felt much while reading the book, but now, recalling the endless tortures Ren Jingmu devised in the story, Tang Huan felt a chill run down her spine and broke out in a cold sweat.
If Tang Huan had arrived a little later, the original her would have pushed Qin Su off the cliff as described in the book, and everything would have unfolded according to the story’s trajectory.
Thankfully, it hadn’t gotten that far yet. Qin Su was still alive and well, and Ren Jingmu hadn’t fallen into the demonic path.
Tang Huan shook off her sadness and quickly regained her spirits.
No matter what kind of world this was, now that she was here and had a healthy body, Tang Huan cherished this opportunity for a new life.
Tang Huan naturally wouldn’t target Qin Su again just because of Ren Jingmu.
More than the original Tang Huan’s romantic entanglements, her own safety was a higher priority. The demons’ desire for invasion was relentless, and without Ren Jingmu, the demonic realm would likely come up with other plots against the immortal sect. This world was not a peaceful place.
Now that the plot had changed, Tang Huan just wanted to stay far away from Ren Jingmu and Qin Su, hunker down, live her own life, and continuously improve her cultivation to protect herself in the coming chaos.
With that thought, Tang Huan composed herself, took out a pen and paper, and racked her brain to recall the original plot, writing down all the characters and plot points she could remember. She worked late into the night and didn’t even know when she fell asleep.
“Ah Huan, did you stay up late cultivating again? Why didn’t you even go to morning class?”

The next morning, Tang Huan was awakened by a female voice.
A small girl with a fair complexion and a naive, cute look stood before her. Crumbs from a pastry were on the corner of her mouth as she looked down at Tang Huan with a face full of concern.
Seeing Tang Huan’s eyes open, the girl’s face showed a clear hint of indignation. “You don’t know? The word is spreading outside that you tried and failed to harm Senior Sister Qin, and now you’re feeling guilty and hiding because you’re too ashamed to see anyone…”
“Ah Huan,” the girl glanced at Tang Huan’s expression, bit her lower lip, and continued cautiously, “I heard Ren Jingmu was the one who spread this…”
This girl must be someone the original Tang Huan trusted greatly, someone who had access to her cave dwelling.
Tang Huan blinked, looking at the girl’s dumpling-like face. Her sleepy brain worked sluggishly, and after a while, she finally remembered the girl’s identity: the original Tang Huan’s best friend, Wang Mengyao.
In the novel, Wang Mengyao was a minor character whose name only appeared a few times. However, she was the only one who continued to visit the original Tang Huan after she went insane and was imprisoned. She even tried to help her escape when Ren Jingmu attacked the immortal sect.
Recalling Wang Mengyao’s tragic end in the story, where she was brutally murdered by Ren Jingmu for helping the original Tang Huan, Tang Huan’s gaze involuntarily softened with warmth as she looked at the concerned girl in front of her.
In the memories Tang Huan inherited, the original Tang Huan disliked Wang Mengyao for being too slow-witted and didn’t really bother with her. She only put up with Wang Mengyao’s enthusiasm because of her parents. But in Tang Huan’s eyes, Wang Mengyao, who had been so caring and considerate of the original Tang Huan ever since she had helped her with a small favor in childhood, was better to her than everyone else in the cultivation world.
The original Tang Huan was so foolish! She ruined her reputation over Ren Jingmu and even got such a good friend involved.
“Thank you, Mengyao,” Tang Huan said softly, sitting up and picking the pastry crumbs from Wang Mengyao’s lips. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past. I thought about it all night and have gotten over my mental block.”
“Someone as magnificent as Senior Sister Qin is far beyond anything I could ever hope to be. Senior Brother Ren is infatuated with Senior Sister Qin, and I no longer want to be the villain. Now I just want to focus on my cultivation, improve quickly, and let go of everything else…”
Wang Mengyao’s eyes widened. She clearly hadn’t expected Tang Huan to say such a thing. But then her eyes lit up with pleasant surprise. “Ah Huan, you’ve finally come to your senses! Although Ren Jingmu is handsome and talented, but, but…”
Wang Mengyao took a deep breath and bravely spoke her mind. “But he’s nothing but trouble! So many Senior Sisters have been spreading bad things about you because of him, and you’ve done so many wrong things because of him…”
She finished and cautiously watched Tang Huan’s reaction. However, unlike before, this time when Tang Huan heard her speak ill of Ren Jingmu, she didn’t defend him. Instead, she laughed in agreement. “You’re right. He’s nothing but trouble! We should stay far away from trouble in the future…”
Wang Mengyao nodded repeatedly, her smile growing wider. She finally believed that Tang Huan had genuinely let go of Ren Jingmu.
Wang Mengyao was the daughter of an elder in the sect. The elder had an accident while giving birth to her, which resulted in Wang Mengyao’s low cultivation talent. She often needed pills to sustain her life. Her parents doted on her, which led to her simple, frank, and lovable personality. After spending some time with her, Tang Huan quickly grew fond of this innocent and straightforward girl.
As a newcomer to this world, Tang Huan was afraid of giving herself away and didn’t want to have too much contact with others. She told Wang Mengyao that she wanted to go into seclusion to cultivate for a few days. Wang Mengyao didn’t suspect anything, thinking that Tang Huan might have been heartbroken by Ren Jingmu. She thoughtfully went to the elder to ask for leave on Tang Huan’s behalf and visited her every day with a large bag of food and storybooks.
The original Tang Huan often threw tantrums and acted up, so when Wang Mengyao asked for leave for her, the elders didn’t suspect a thing. However, according to Wang Mengyao, the rumors among the disciples were spreading, and most of them now knew the story of Tang Huan’s failed attempt to kill Qin Su, and that she was hiding in her cave dwelling out of shame.
Tang Huan didn’t care about the rumors. After getting leave, she holed herself up in the original Tang Huan’s cave dwelling, diligently familiarizing herself with this new world.
The original Tang Huan loved luxury, and her cave dwelling was extremely spacious, filled with all kinds of magical artifacts. There was even a small yard behind the cave dwelling, planted with various flowers and containing two hot springs with healing properties.
Tang Huan felt a sense of urgency. Knowing the volatile situation in the cultivation world, she desperately wanted to improve her ability to protect herself. She spent these days diligently getting used to this body and quickly recalled the cultivation techniques and magical treasures from the original Tang Huan’s memories.
She tried to cultivate using the original Tang Huan’s methods. When she got tired, she would soak in the hot springs. With Wang Mengyao bringing her all sorts of pastries and storybooks, her days were not only bearable but even quite pleasant.
The original Tang Huan had outstanding talent and had already reached the Foundation Establishment stage at a young age. According to the rules of the cultivation world, a body at this level was very difficult for an outsider to quickly take control of. Tang Huan felt a bit of stagnation when she first started adapting to this body and was prepared for a long adjustment period. However, to her surprise, she perfectly integrated with this body in just a few days.
What was even stranger to Tang Huan was that the moment she felt the spiritual energy merge with her soul and she fully adapted to this body, she heard some subtle, rustling conversations.
“Tang Huan didn’t lose her temper and break things this time!”
“She’s actually quite pretty when she’s not angry.”
“Thank goodness. Last time, when Ren Jingmu rejected her, she was so harsh, she almost plucked all my fur out…”
Tang Huan was surprised. She sorted out the spiritual energy in her body, opened her eyes, and looked around, finally settling her gaze on a nest of small mice in the corner of the cave dwelling.
In the cultivation world, everything had a spirit. This nest of small mice was not ordinary. They were called “Irrigation Mice,” a type of low-level spiritual creature. They could survive just by drinking water and were not only cute but also naturally clean, helping their owners tidy up the cave dwelling.
Tang Huan’s gaze met the dark, beady eyes of one of the mice, and a voice, tense to the point of cracking, immediately rang in her mind. “Ahhhhh! What should I do? What should I do? Tang Huan is looking at me! She’s not going to pluck out my fur, is she?”
The voice gave Tang Huan a headache. She rubbed her forehead, pursed her lips, and turned away expressionlessly. She closed her eyes and pretended to meditate, her mind a mess.
The original Tang Huan had no ability to communicate with animals, and Tang Huan didn’t know why she could suddenly hear the Irrigation Mice’s thoughts. Tang Huan even thought the voices she was hearing were just her imagination.
But Tang Huan later found that she could not only hear the thoughts of the Irrigation Mice but also those of the butterflies and low-level spiritual snakes in the yard.
Tang Huan finally figured out the pattern: she could hear the thoughts of some low-level spirit beasts with weak spiritual power.
Tang Huan didn’t know why she suddenly had this ability, as the original Tang Huan didn’t have this skill.
But it was a useful skill.
These low-level animals were everywhere and went unnoticed. Tang Huan could learn a lot about the cultivation world from their thoughts, especially the seven Irrigation Mice in her cave dwelling. They looked soft, cute, and pink, but secretly they were the gossip hub of the Tianxuan Sect, chatting about all the latest news.
Tang Huan stayed in her cave dwelling every day, cultivating and gossiping with them, learning a lot of insider information.
For example, her foster mother, Elder Tang, who was in seclusion, had encountered a block in her cultivation and would probably not come out for another three to five years. Shi Yingying, the most outstanding disciple of the Mo Yu Tang, (Black Feather Hall) had developed a heart demon after losing her parents’ relic. The sect master had been searching for someone among the disciples for years. And over forty disciples had already written love poems to Qin Su, making Ren Jingmu feel a sense of crisis, so he was trying every way he could to win Qin Su’s affection…
The biggest piece of gossip Tang Huan heard was about the founder of the Tianxuan Sect, Patriarch Xuan Ling.
According to the rumors, the Patriarch had ascended many years ago, but in the gossip Tang Huan heard, the Patriarch was still alive, in a state of hibernation in their cave dwelling.
This news was explosive. If it got out, the entire cultivation world would be shaken. But Tang Huan just put the information in the back of her mind. After all, this Patriarch never appeared in the original story, so they were probably not an important character.
******
Days passed like this.
The elders asked about Tang Huan several times, and Wang Mengyao started urging her to come out of the cave dwelling. But the days of just lazing around were too comfortable, and Tang Huan didn’t want to get involved in the conflicts of the cultivation world. She just wanted to be a lazy bum and stay in her cave dwelling, making excuses to postpone her return until one day, she suddenly heard gossip about herself.
That day, Tang Huan had just woken up from meditation when she heard the shriek of one of the Irrigation Mice. The mice were exchanging the latest gossip with a group of moths.
“Qin Su almost choked to death while drinking medicine! Luckily, the elders arrived in time!”
“She was drinking from the cup Tang Huan gave her on her birthday!”
“It really wasn’t Tang Huan’s doing this time! Tang Huan has turned over a new leaf and hasn’t left her cave dwelling. Although she deliberately chose a cup with a chip in it and secretly cursed Qin Su, ‘Choke to death, you weakling,’ Tang Huan is evil, but she’s not an idiot. She didn’t expect Qin Su to actually choke…”
“Ren Jingmu found the chip in the cup and is furious…”
The chattering voices were incessant. Tang Huan’s eyes widened, her mind in a jumble. Before she could process the information, Ren Jingmu’s angry roar came from outside the cave dwelling.
“Tang Huan, come out here!”
