- Chapter 20 - Building a House
Qin Su had originally meant to say “rabbit,” but she couldn’t let anyone know that she had secretly observed Tang Huan with her spiritual sense. So the word on her tongue changed to “spirit pet” before she spoke it.
She hadn’t rested at all the past two nights.
The night before, she had set up a simple spiritual gathering array in her room to absorb spiritual energy for the cave dwelling. Later, she was busy making pills for Tang Huan. Before Tang Huan arrived, she was in the process of reinforcing the array. Fearing Tang Huan would get angry and explode if she saw her staying up all night, she quickly extinguished the lights when she sensed Tang Huan entering.
She hadn’t expected Tang Huan to sneak in and immediately start building a house in the yard, not even noticing her when she stood right behind her.
Connecting this to the secretly-seen Guide to Raising a Frail Rabbit, Qin Su felt she had guessed the truth.Tang Huan wanted to raise a rabbit in her cave dwelling and was trying to build it first since she was afraid Qin Su wouldn’t agree.
Qin Su had never raised a rabbit, but she knew their habits. While cultivators’ rabbits weren’t as timid as their mortal counterparts, they still preferred quiet, dry environments. Tang Huan’s lavish and noisy cave dwelling with a hot spring was indeed not a suitable place to raise a rabbit.
Qin Su laughed to herself. She had even raised a vicious and naughty Black Bird. Why would she be afraid of raising a frail rabbit?
With that thought, Qin Su spoke softly again, “Junior Sister, there’s no need to be so cautious. If you want to raise a spirit pet, you can just tell me directly.”
Tang Huan’s eyes widened. She stared at Qin Su in a daze, not understanding why Qin Su thought she wanted to raise a spirit pet. However, hearing that Qin Su wasn’t against her building a house to raise a pet here, Tang Huan blinked. Her mind quickly adapted, and she immediately went along with it, chuckling sheepishly. “Ah, hehe, you caught me, Senior Sister…”
“I really did want to build a spirit pet nest.” The kind with a small kitchen attached.
“Junior Sister, don’t be so formal.” Qin Su’s lips curved into a smile once more as she looked at Tang Huan. She said softly, “It’s too much work for you to build this house. Let me do it!”
Qin Su took a step closer and leisurely took the brick from Tang Huan’s hand. Her smile deepened. “Junior Sister, close your eyes and count to three with me.”
Tang Huan had originally wanted to refuse.
With Qin Su’s small frame, Tang Huan didn’t think she was suited for such heavy labor.
However, as Qin Su approached, Tang Huan saw her perfect, flawless, beautiful face up close. The fragrance from Qin Su’s body intermingled with the ever-present scent of plants and trees from Baiwu Peak, creating a strange, enveloping aroma. Tang Huan suddenly felt a bit nervous, her heart tightening, and she found it hard to breathe.
“Why are you acting like a little fool?” she heard Qin Su chuckle before speaking softly again. “Junior Sister, close your eyes.”
Qin Su’s gentle tone seemed to carry a strange, irresistible power. By the time Tang Huan reacted, she had already obediently closed her eyes.
“One.” Qin Su spoke softly.
Tang Huan heard the sound of plants growing. Something seemed to be rustling and growing out of the ground.
It was only then that Tang Huan remembered that besides being a genius alchemist, Qin Su was also skilled in array formations. Perhaps she had been detected the moment she came in…
Tang Huan couldn’t help but blush.
“Two.” Qin Su’s voice continued to sound in her ear, with a hint of a smile.
Something soft and fluffy was placed in Tang Huan’s arms. As Qin Su said “Three,” Tang Huan opened her eyes in astonishment. Just as she expected, a spacious bamboo house had appeared before her. It was only slightly smaller than Qin Su’s own house. Not to mention a spirit beast, it was more than enough for Tang Huan to live in.
In Tang Huan’s arms was a small beast with a sleek, glossy, snow-white coat, looking like a cross between a kitten and a tiger cub. Meeting Tang Huan’s gaze, the little beast let out a ferocious-sounding “Awoo” and waved its tiny claws at her.
“This is a Thunder Beast,” Qin Su explained softly, meeting Tang Huan’s confused gaze. “It doesn’t have many other skills, but it’s extremely protective of its own. Since you want to raise a… spirit pet, it might be lonely to have just one. Why not raise a Thunder Beast as well? If there’s ever any danger, the Thunder Beast can protect your pet—”
After all, Tang Huan wanted to raise a rabbit. While rabbits in the cultivation world were a bit stronger, they were still fragile and difficult to raise. If it died, Tang Huan would definitely be sad, so it would be better to have a Thunder Beast guarding it, allowing the rabbit to live longer.
This Thunder Beast fell off the Cliff of Death a few years ago. After Qin Su saved it, it refused to leave, circling Qin Su’s cave dwelling all year round. With Tang Huan looking after it from now on, it would have a home.
Qin Su spoke so casually, but Tang Huan’s eyes widened as she listened. This was a Thunder Beast!
Thunder Beasts were born from the chaos of the world without parents, one of the fiercest mythical beasts. They were notoriously untamable and had violent tempers. A normal adult Thunder Beast could have the same attack power as a Core Formation cultivator, let alone one with high talent.
This rare and priceless spirit beast was dismissed by Qin Su as having “no other skills.” Was she really not afraid that the little Thunder Beast would understand and bite her?
Tang Huan couldn’t help but look down at the little Thunder Beast again. Thunder Beasts were naturally high-level spirit beasts, so Tang Huan couldn’t hear its thoughts like she could with the little ground squirrel. But she distinctly felt the little Thunder Beast’s body stiffen, clearly having understood Qin Su’s words.
Tang Huan frowned, secretly on guard for the Thunder Beast to lash out and injure her. But then she saw a flicker of grievance in the Thunder Beast’s moist eyes. It then let out a reluctant “Awoo” and slowly snuggled into Tang Huan’s arms.
The little Thunder Beast naturally didn’t want to submit to a weak master like Tang Huan. But with the terrifyingly powerful Qin Su watching, it had no choice but to accept its new master.
Tang Huan’s eyes widened.
The spirit beast’s sudden affection was a complete surprise.
For some reason, Tang Huan felt like the spirit beast was being threatened. But the beast’s “docile” appearance was so adorable that Tang Huan couldn’t stop herself from petting its head several times.
“Junior Sister, what spirit beast do you want to raise?” Qin Su smiled and asked gently.
It was still dark outside, and Qin Su just wanted to solve the problem for Tang Huan and let her go back to rest. But when Tang Huan heard this, she snapped out of her daze from petting the Thunder Beast.
She had only gone along with Qin Su’s words and hadn’t thought about what kind of spirit beast to raise. Unable to come up with anything on the spot, she could only stammer, “I-I’ll wait a bit. I’ll bring the spirit beast over in a couple of days.”
Qin Su nodded, thinking Tang Huan might need some time to prepare. She said, “No rush,” and looked up at the dark night sky. “It’s still early. Why don’t you go back and rest, Junior Sister?”
“No rush…” Tang Huan coughed twice, her gaze fixed on the newly built bamboo house. Her eyes lit up as if she had an idea, and she carefully looked back at Qin Su, her eyes twinkling.
Qin Su watched her patiently. And just as expected, yet surprisingly, Tang Huan stepped forward and took hold of her sleeve again, expertly acting cute.
“Senior Sister, the best, most wonderful Senior Sister in the world!”
“This new house is so big, and the spiritual energy here is so abundant. I want to stay in this house to cultivate.”
“Don’t worry, I promise I won’t disturb you…”
Looking at the familiar pleading expression on Tang Huan’s face, Qin Su blinked, a rare hint of confusion appearing in her expression. Was Tang Huan suggesting she wanted to take over the spirit pet’s house?
“Also,” before Qin Su could react, she heard Tang Huan’s voice turn even sweeter. “Senior Sister, you know… I’ve always been a glutton who loves to eat…”
“So, could… could you build a small kitchen next to the house?”
