- Chapter 28 - Crisis
The entire space suddenly shook violently, and everything went completely dark.
Tang Huan fell into a massive black hole, plummeting straight down with no way to escape. But she wasn’t scared at all. She was completely confident: after all, it was just a dream.
Soon after, Qin Su who was wearing a red robe appeared beside her. With a complicated expression, she grabbed Tang Huan’s hand and pulled her out of the gaping black void.
Tang Huan had initially harbored a few doubts about the dream’s reality, but now she was completely certain. If this wasn’t a dream, how could so many bizarre things be happening?
After pulling Tang Huan up, Qin Su took two steps back. The shock she’d received seemed to be even greater than Tang Huan had imagined. Her beautiful eyes were cast downward, her lips pressed tightly together, as if she were still struggling to process Tang Huan kissing her.
Tang Huan had initially felt completely justified. After all, this wasn’t the real Qin Su, just a dream-avatar. But for some reason, seeing the vivid, bashful expression on Qin Su’s face, a flicker of embarrassment ignited in her own heart. The heat spread, and her entire face began to burn.
You can’t blush in a dream… right?
“Okay… I’m good now! Let’s start practicing!” Tang Huan tried to put on a dignified air, befitting a master of her own dream. She glanced at red-robed Qin Su’s expression and awkwardly raised her voice again. “Hey! It’s just a dream, don’t look like that. You look so much like Senior Sister, I feel like I’m bullying you…”
“You really can’t blame me for this. You have Senior Sister’s beautiful face, and that grumpy look actually looks kind of cute. Senior Sister is so nice to me, and I’ve wanted to kiss her for a long time, but she’s so delicate, I was afraid I would scare her…” Tang Huan mumbled to herself, making red-robed Qin Su’s eyelid twitch.
“Anyway, I was just expressing my affection for Senior Sister,” Tang Huan tried to move on completely. “Tomorrow will be a new dream. You and I will both forget this ever happened, so just don’t think about it anymore…”
Tang Huan only said this to ease the awkwardness, but as soon as the words left her mouth, she felt that everything had become even stranger. This sounded exactly like something a manipulative jerk would say to a stand-in!
Just as Tang Huan expected, Qin Su was even more shocked. She gave Tang Huan a long, deep look, her lips pressed tightly together, then let out a scoff. She turned, plucked another branch, and began to practice in front of Tang Huan.
Compared to the previous night’s moves, the sword intent was even sharper now!
Watching the leaves flutter down, affected by Qin Su’s sword aura, Tang Huan felt a chill run down her neck. She had the chilling thought that she might become one of those leaves, sliced in half by the sword.
How could she have mistaken this person for her Senior Sister? This red-robed Qin Su is so fierce; she’s nothing like my Senior Sister’s kind and gentle nature…
Maybe her subconscious wanted Senior Sister to be stronger, which was why Qin Su had such profound sword skills in the dream. But now, after experiencing it, Tang Huan felt incredibly lucky. Her Senior Sister was perfect just the way she was gentle and kind. It was a good thing she wasn’t this terrifying version of Qin Su.
After red-robed Qin Su finished her demonstration, Tang Huan was sweating profusely. She didn’t know why, but perhaps it was because she sensed Tang Huan’s fear, she found that red-robed Qin Su was suddenly even more displeased.
Red-robed Qin Su didn’t say a word after that, but her gaze followed Tang Huan like a shadow. Tang Huan felt like a small animal being hunted by a beast. Since she was at fault, she could only pick up her branch and start learning the new sword moves.
The new sword technique looked incredibly difficult. Plus, Tang Huan had been so embarrassed by what happened earlier that she hadn’t paid close attention when red-robed Qin Su had demonstrated it. It was much harder to get a hang of than the previous night’s moves. Tang Huan quickly became breathless. She couldn’t understand why a dream would feel so genuinely exhausting, but she didn’t have much time to think.
Red-robed Qin Su clearly noticed Tang Huan’s distraction. Tang Huan didn’t know what she was thinking, but she suddenly created an illusion in the sky. If Tang Huan stopped, red-robed Qin Su would conjure up the image of her white-robed Senior Sister and kill her. Tang Huan stopped once, and white-robed Qin Su died once. She was killed by falling off a cliff, by a spirit beast, and by poison…
All sorts of deaths befell white-robed Qin Su. Red-robed Qin Su’s illusion was incredibly realistic and even recreated the way white-robed Qin Su looked when she died. Watching Qin Su bleed from every orifice in the illusion, Tang Huan felt sick to her stomach. Even in a dream, Tang Huan couldn’t bear to see her Senior Sister die.
Tang Huan was furious. She kept chanting to herself that she wanted to change red-robed Qin Su’s twisted personality, but her power as the “dream master” had no effect on her. Red-robed Qin Su continued to do as she pleased.
What kind of twisted dream is this? Why am I dreaming that Qin Su is killing herself?
But the stern-faced red-robed Qin Su looked incredibly cold. Tang Huan was inexplicably afraid to go over and plead with her. She could only desperately practice her sword art to stop Qin Su from “killing herself.” She didn’t know when she finally collapsed from exhaustion and fell asleep.
When Tang Huan opened her eyes again, it was already the next day. Tang Huan had expected to feel exhausted. After all, she had been cultivating all day and practicing swordplay all night. It was just too much.
However, even though she had practiced swordplay all night in her dream, Tang Huan’s energy was still incredibly abundant after she woke up. The spiritual energy in her body was even fusing and flowing more smoothly than before.
Recalling the brutal training in her dream, Tang Huan felt a shiver of fear, but the results were undeniable. When Tang Huan began to practice her swordplay the next day, she was able to fluidly perform all the moves red-robed Qin Su had taught her. She couldn’t help it; while practicing, the image of white-robed Qin Su’s tragic death kept flashing in her mind. It had almost become her instinct. She was terrified that if she was even a second slow, red-robed Qin Su would kill white-robed Qin Su again.
Although the method of learning this sword technique was a bit strange, with her new sword and new techniques, Tang Huan was excited to compete, even though the matches would only get harder from here on out.
******
The morning passed quickly, and it was soon time for the drawing of lots. As Tang Huan walked down the mountain, she passed Qin Su’s door. Even though Qin Su had only been in seclusion for a few days, Tang Huan felt as if a very long time had passed, and she couldn’t help but feel a pang of longing.
I miss Senior Sister so much! Especially after dreaming that red-robed Qin Su killed her several times in the illusion last night, I want to see Qin Su even more, just to make sure she’s safe…
“Senior Sister!” Tang Huan sighed in her heart, but her voice was as cheerful as always. She kept to her usual pattern of reporting only good news. “I’m going down the mountain for my third match!”
“Don’t worry, my opponent’s not that strong. I’m confident I can win this one easily, too…”
After her bold declaration, Tang Huan flew down the mountain on her sword. After two rounds of competition, a large portion of the disciples had been eliminated, and only the relatively skilled ones remained.
This time, Tang Huan’s luck was great. She drew a female cultivator who used a whip. Tang Huan happened to know her. This cultivator also liked Ren Jingmu and had privately sparred with the original owner many times. Tang Huan noticed that Ren Jingmu was also scheduled to compete at roughly the same time, so he probably wouldn’t be able to come and cause trouble.
Recalling her opponent’s fighting style, Tang Huan breathed a sigh of relief. As long as there were no unexpected twists, she was fairly confident she would win this time.
But, as luck would have it, after all the lots were drawn, there was one person left over who had no opponent: Liu Fei.
Everyone trusted Liu Fei’s strength, and after a discussion, the elders suggested that Liu Fei be granted a free pass and advance directly to the fourth round.
Feeling a bit envious of Liu Fei’s good fortune, Tang Huan didn’t think much of it. She focused on her opponent, preparing for battle. But just as the match was about to begin, the female cultivator raised her chin and looked at Tang Huan with a provocative expression.
“Junior Sister, Senior Brother Ren gave me half of a cultivation technique. It’s been incredibly beneficial to me, and Senior Brother Ren said that if I forfeit this match, the rest of the book is mine…”
“Senior Brother Ren has been so good to me, so of course, I can’t let him down. I wish you all the best, Junior Sister.”
Listening to the woman, Tang Huan’s brow furrowed. Something felt wrong. Why would she be so excited about forfeiting? Why did she have that look of someone who was about to watch a good show?
And Tang Huan’s premonition came true in the next moment.
After the female cultivator forfeited the match, the elders, at Ren Jingmu’s suggestion, decided to let the unpaired Liu Fei take her place to fill the spot.
Tang Huan’s eyes widened. She was starting to panic. She had never expected that scoundrel Ren Jingmu to be so cunning as to arrange for her to fight Liu Fei!
Liu Fei’s talent was truly terrifying. She’d heard that in just a few days, even Ren Jingmu had lost to him multiple times. Could she really win against him?
