- Chapter 3 - The Big Cauldron
Tang Huan didn’t want to deal with Ren Jingmu and holed herself up in her cave. But as the obsessive male lead of the original novel, Ren Jingmu wasn’t about to give up so easily. When Tang Huan didn’t come out, he started violently trying to break through the barrier around her cave, determined to get an explanation from her.
The constant banging on the barrier made Tang Huan’s heart pound. She couldn’t calm down at all.
After cowering for about fifteen minutes, Tang Huan sighed, tossed aside the blanket she was hiding under, patted her face, took a deep breath, and walked out of the cave.
The sunlight outside was so bright that it hurt her eyes for a moment.
When her vision cleared, Tang Huan’s eyes widened at the scene in front of her, and she instinctively took a step back.
Ren Jingmu was surrounded by a large crowd of people, all of them clustered in front of her cave, so tightly packed that she could barely see a way through.
In that instant, Tang Huan felt like a monkey in a zoo, on display for everyone.
She had planned to come out and reason with Ren Jingmu, to tell him that she no longer had feelings for him and wouldn’t harm Qin Su again. But she never expected Ren Jingmu to be so underhanded, bringing so many people with him!
To say anything in this situation would be to humiliate Ren Jingmu in public, and given his vindictive nature, he would probably go crazy again afterward…
Tang Huan felt a headache coming on.
She eyed Ren Jingmu warily. When their eyes met, she was met with a look of pure disgust, and she instinctively took two more steps back. She couldn’t help but look up at the barrier overhead.
This barrier was set up by the original Tang Huan’s foster mother, and Tang Huan had a lot of faith in its effectiveness. But with so many people attacking it at once, she wasn’t sure how long it would hold.
Now, Tang Huan could only play it by ear and hope for the best. She was pinning her hopes on Wang Mengyao. Ren Jingmu was making such a big scene that Wang Mengyao must have heard about it. Maybe she had already gone to get reinforcements, and the elders were on their way…
When Tang Huan emerged, those who didn’t know her well were simply surprised, but those who did know her well were stunned for a moment.
In the short time since they last saw her, Tang Huan seemed to have changed completely.
A person’s state of mind could affect their entire demeanor.
The original Tang Huan was arrogant and overbearing, always wearing elaborate clothes to present herself as high and mighty, which made her unbearable. But the current Tang Huan had a gentle aura and an innocent look in her eyes. Her plain attire only emphasized her charming naivete. Although they had the same face, she looked like a different person.
Ren Jingmu also noticed Tang Huan’s change.
But he just saw it as another trick to get his attention.
In his mind, Tang Huan, having been caught trying to harm Senior Sister Qin multiple times, must be feeling guilty and probably had a whole list of excuses ready to argue her case.
But Tang Huan just looked at him, took a few steps back, and didn’t say a word. It looked like she was trying to retreat back into her cave!
“Tang Huan!”
Seeing Tang Huan about to duck back inside, Ren Jingmu lost his cool. A vein throbbed on his temple, and he launched into an attack. “Even if you were once venomous, you at least had the guts to own up to it! Now your actions are becoming even more wicked and cowardly. You are a disgrace to the immortal sect!”
“Whether you like it or not, I will expose your malicious deeds to everyone today!”
After saying that, Ren Jingmu’s face was ashen as he lifted his chin, as if he couldn’t spare another glance for Tang Huan.
He had long since run out of patience with her. Tang Huan’s existence was a great threat to Senior Sister Qin. He had heard that Tang Huan’s adoptive mother was in seclusion and wouldn’t be out for a while. He had deliberately brought so many people here today to expose Tang Huan in front of everyone, seize the opportunity to get her expelled from the sect, and eliminate the threat for good!
He knew Tang Huan liked him and knew exactly what attitude would provoke her the most.
If the original Tang Huan had been there, she would have probably become hysterical after being provoked by his words.
But the person facing Ren Jingmu now was Tang Huan.
Tang Huan had given up on trying to reason with Ren Jingmu. Seeing his uncommunicative demeanor, she decided it was not the right time to be honest. She thought for a moment, then, under the gaze of the crowd, she cautiously took another step back.
At that moment, she also realized something. Ren Jingmu was the only one who had a weapon out and was attacking the barrier. Everyone else was just following him, a bunch of curious onlookers.
As long as she could calm down the rest of the crowd, Ren Jingmu alone wasn’t much of a threat to her…
Figuring this out, Tang Huan quietly let out a breath of relief. She lowered her head and put on a pitiful expression, bowing to the crowd of onlookers.
“Fellow Senior and Junior Brothers and Sisters, I haven’t left my cave for half a month. Today, Senior Brother Ren came to smash my cave and hurl insults at me for no reason. I dare to ask, what has happened?”
The onlookers were a bit confused themselves.
Many of them had come here with the intention of standing up for Qin Su. Ren Jingmu had only said that he had found proof of Tang Huan trying to harm Qin Su, but they had arrived in a hurry and didn’t really know what happened.
However, some of them had witnessed everything. One person immediately shouted, “The cup Tang Huan gave Senior Sister Qin was strange! Senior Sister Qin’s old illness recently relapsed. She choked on her medicine after drinking from the cup Tang Huan gave her, and if the elders hadn’t found her in time, she might have died…”
“Preposterous!”
Before the onlookers could react, Tang Huan secretly pinched herself, her eyes welling up with tears, and she shouted with as much righteous indignation as she could.
“Just because I gave Senior Sister Qin a cup? So you all think I wanted to kill her?”
“That was the ‘Nine-Revolving Cup’ my mother gave me! The cup has a beautiful star pattern and the ability to warm and heal medicine. I had just recovered from a serious illness. I was so grateful to Senior Sister Qin for her medicine, and I had decided to turn over a new leaf. I just wanted to give her a birthday gift to ask for her forgiveness. I couldn’t even bear to use the cup myself before! How could I have known it had a hidden purpose…”
Tang Huan’s words were a mix of truth and falsehood.
The original Tang Huan had indeed recovered from her illness after taking medicine from Qin Su. But the original Tang Huan wasn’t grateful, thinking that anyone else could have cured her. She also felt that if she didn’t repay Qin Su, people might criticize her, so she chose a cup that looked valuable but actually had a flaw.
After Tang Huan learned that Qin Su had choked on her medicine because of the cup, she secretly decided to deny everything. The story of choking on medicine and blaming it on a cup sounded ridiculous no matter how you looked at it. Only an overbearing, cliché male lead like Ren Jingmu could come up with such a thing!
After hearing her mix of truths and half-truths, some who knew that Qin Su had once treated Tang Huan began to look doubtful.
Tang Huan let out a breath of relief. Deciding to strike while the iron was hot, she turned to face the livid Ren Jingmu.
She wiped the corner of her eyes, which had no tears, her gaze sorrowful, and her voice full of sorrow.
“Senior Brother Ren, so you also believe that I used a cup to try and kill Senior Sister Qin, and that’s why you came here to smash my cave?”
In this moment, Tang Huan delivered the performance of her life. Her face showed one-third disbelief and two-thirds heartbreaking despair. She stared blankly at Ren Jingmu. When she got no response for a long time, she let out a bitter laugh, full of hopelessness. As if unable to bear the sudden blow, she took two steps back, her shoulders slumped, and she lowered her head, leaning heartbrokenly against the main doors of her cave.
Tang Huan was truly heartbroken. The two massive white marble doors in front of the original Tang Huan’s cave had been smashed into two giant holes by this jerk of a male lead!
“Stop putting on an act!”
Ren Jingmu watched Tang Huan coldly, his expression unchanging. He even let out a sneer. “If you were truly grateful to Senior Sister Qin, you wouldn’t have caused her to fall off the cliff last time!”
“If I were you, I would be too ashamed to stay in the sect anymore!”
Ren Jingmu spoke coldly, his face stern. Inside, he was relieved.
He knew that his reason for picking a fight with Tang Huan this time was a bit flimsy. But recently, more and more people were pursuing Senior Sister Qin, some of them from powerful families with outstanding talents. Ren Jingmu panicked. His purpose for coming to cause trouble was to show Qin Su that he would actively help her get rid of any dangers. He wanted her to see that he was the only one worthy of her.
He had always thought he understood Tang Huan. He had planned to provoke her and make her lose control, but he never expected her to suddenly grow a brain and not follow his script.
Ren Jingmu had been a little flustered, feeling that Tang Huan was no longer in his control. But seeing her heartbroken expression, he relaxed. He knew it—this woman, Tang Huan, couldn’t let go of him! Now that he had publicly humiliated her like this, she must feel utterly hopeless and have no face to stay in the sect!
But the Tang Huan who was supposedly “utterly hopeless” was secretly clenching her fists. If she had the power, Tang Huan would have loved to punch Ren Jingmu in the face.
Tang Huan was only putting on a show to have a reason to hide back in her cave and continue to live a quiet life. She never expected this jerk to be so vicious and try to force her out of the Tianxuan Sect (Celestial Mystery Sect)!
With her current flimsy skills, if she left the sect, she would surely be eaten alive by all sorts of demons and monsters, with not even a scrap left behind.
To hell with this male lead!
For a lazy person who just wanted to live a quiet life, there was nothing more unbearable than someone trying to kick her out of her home.
Tang Huan took a deep breath, but she couldn’t hold back her fury. She looked up angrily, about to have it out with the selfish man once and for all, when a familiar, clear voice came from the side.
“Junior Brother Ren, I’ve told you before, everything that happens to me is my fate. These matters have nothing to do with my junior sister.”
Tang Huan turned to look and saw Qin Su, still dressed in her white robe.
In the past half-month, Qin Su looked even more delicate. A hint of sickness was clear on her face, but it did nothing to diminish her beauty. She looked even more ethereal, like a true immortal, as if she might vanish with the wind at any moment.
Perhaps it was because Qin Su was so beautiful that Tang Huan always felt a bit awkward when she saw her. After a quick glance, she couldn’t help but look away.
Standing behind Qin Su was Wang Mengyao, her head held high. When she met Tang Huan’s gaze, Wang Mengyao secretly winked at her.
Wow!
Tang Huan had been hoping Wang Mengyao would go for reinforcements, but she never expected her to just bring Qin Su herself!
And Qin Su’s appearance was even more effective than the elders’. The moment she showed up, everyone’s attention was on her, and no one even noticed Tang Huan anymore.
Seeing the frail Qin Su, a handsome male disciple was the first to speak up with concern. “Senior Sister Qin, you haven’t recovered yet. How can you come out into the wind?”
Qin Su opened her mouth, her expression as calm as ever. “I know what I’m doing. It’s fine.”
Another female disciple nervously asked, “Senior Sister, could you please take a look at me? My spiritual energy has been stagnant lately, and my cultivation hasn’t progressed at all…”
Qin Su glanced at the disciple, coughed twice, and said gently, “Junior Sister Wang, there’s an issue with the third level of your cultivation technique…”
******
Even though she didn’t say much, Qin Su patiently answered every disciple’s questions. It was no wonder she was so popular in the Tianxuan Sect, being both beautiful and helpful to her fellow disciples!
Tang Huan felt a pang of admiration and looked at Ren Jingmu with a bit of gossip in her eyes. Ren Jingmu was frowning, his gaze fixed on Qin Su.
Ren Jingmu had asked so many questions, but Qin Su hadn’t answered any of them. He was so anxious, afraid he was annoying her, that he was focused entirely on her expression and couldn’t be bothered with Tang Huan anymore.
Serves him right!
Tang Huan swore under her breath and exchanged a look with Wang Mengyao. Taking advantage of the fact that no one was paying attention, she quietly slipped back into her cave.
Tang Huan got her wish and was able to hide away in her cave again.
Qin Su’s clarification was much more effective than anything Tang Huan could have said. After Qin Su showed up, the rumors about Tang Huan in the Tianxuan Sect died down significantly.
Ren Jingmu was punished by the elders for causing trouble, and Tang Huan’s doors were repaired. Wang Mengyao said that Ren Jingmu still didn’t like Tang Huan and was always speaking ill of her, but Tang Huan didn’t want to be involved with him anymore. As long as he didn’t show up in front of her, she would just pretend he didn’t exist.
Tang Huan was grateful to Qin Su for helping her out, but after the whole cup incident, Tang Huan didn’t dare get too close to her.
Life became quiet once again.
Tang Huan had planned to hide in her cave for another ten or fifteen days. But less than a week after the cup incident, as she was coming out of a hot spring pool, she overheard some disciples chatting.
“The princess of the All Saint’s Temple is coming to visit Qin Su!”
“The princess thinks she’s the most beautiful woman in the world, so she’s probably up to no good.”
“Heh heh! Let them fight!”
“Oh yeah, the princess is staying at the Qianhe Palace, which was built under Tang Huan’s supervision a few years ago. There’s a nest of spiritual snakes on the rocky slope behind that palace, and the rocks have been loose for a while. What if the rocks fall while Qin Su is hosting the princess? Will Tang Huan get dragged into it again?”
