She Came From Hell - Chapter 5
Shen Yilan wandered aimlessly. This was a mountainside area. Heading toward the research facility’s direction would lead her to the nearest city, G City. Going the other way meant taking a long, long highway that eventually reached S City. Driving would take about seventeen hours, and walking… well, no one had tried it. No one would be that foolish.
Without a second thought, Shen Yilan chose to head toward S City. She walked along the winding mountain road, where no cars passed by. It wasn’t surprising—who would avoid the highway to take this detour through a remote mountain road?
She sighed, pitying her short legs. Who knew if she’d even reach the highway in a month?
Suddenly, Shen Yilan remembered her clothes. Oh no! She should have brought a change of clothes. Now she had nothing to wear, and staying in dirty clothes was gross!
She kept walking at her own pace, and by the time the sky turned dark, she realized she was hungry. Of all the things she had planned, she hadn’t thought to bring food. Why hadn’t she grabbed something to eat before blowing up that place?
Shen Yilan felt a twinge of sadness. In her past life, although her death was tragic, she had everything she wanted while she was alive. Why was her new life so miserable?
As exhaustion set in, she sat down by the side of the road to rest, watching the slowly rising moon. It was so round, like a mooncake—delicious and tempting.
Her thoughts drifted to her grandmother. How was she doing this year? Did she miss her? Was she secretly wiping away tears because of her absence?
Hunger gnawed at her as she gazed at the moon, her mind filled with thoughts of her grandmother.
Suddenly, the sound of a car and gunfire broke the silence.
Shen Yilan’s eyes lit up. Someone was coming! Wait… gunfire?
She stood and looked in the direction of the noise. Two cars were racing down from G City’s direction. The car in front swerved wildly, while the people in the car behind leaned halfway out the windows, firing guns at the vehicle ahead.
The driver of the front car spotted a little girl covered in bl00d standing by the roadside through the headlights. She was smiling sweetly—or rather, eerily.
He was shocked. What was a child doing here?
Just as the car was about to hit her, the driver slammed on the brakes. Seizing the moment before the pursuing car caught up, he jumped out, scooped Shen Yilan into his arms, and threw her into the passenger seat. Then he quickly got back in and continued to evade the attackers.
Because of the delay, the pursuers closed the distance. The young man driving the car was tense, his hands gripping the steering wheel as he maneuvered to prevent the other car from overtaking.
Shen Yilan stared at the man, confused. He was being chased, so why had he wasted time stopping to pick her up? Was he one of the people from the research facility?
“Kid, buckle up!” the man said firmly, his expression tense.
Shen Yilan nodded obediently and fastened her seatbelt.
“Uncle, you’re in danger yourself. Why did you bother wasting time to bring me along?” she asked, her face full of curiosity.
The man was momentarily surprised. This kid was so calm! Wasn’t it normal for children to cry and panic in situations like this?
“Because I’m an adult, and you’re a child. Even in dangerous situations, adults will protect children first,” he replied.
Shen Yilan smiled. Really? But weren’t the ones who hurt her all adults?
Except for her grandmother, no adult had ever tried to protect her.
