- Chapter 10 - Birthday Gift
Ning Xuechu held her phone, searching for information about Qiu Mengxi. Soon, many web pages and videos popped up.
Every title talked about this Miss Qiu’s romantic escapades, changing girlfriends every three months.
From popular actresses to fashion models, whether pure and elegant, or sexy and fiery, there was no one she set her eyes on that she couldn’t win over.
Qiu Mengxi not only came from a good family but was also outstanding in all aspects. Just being an S-class Alpha was enough to make one fall for her, not to mention she was also a generous spender.
The Qiu family and the Ning family were both prominent local wealthy families, with both competition and cooperation between them.
The outside world always liked to compare Qiu Mengxi and An Jianqing, with various tabloids describing them as incompatible.
Alphas of the same rank naturally held strong animosity towards each other, let alone when they also represented the families behind them.
But no one had imagined that these two, rumored to be enemies, were actually good friends.
Ning Xuechu rubbed her somewhat sore eyes, turned off her phone, and tossed it aside.
The most important thing now was to prepare a birthday gift for An Jianqing.
After a day of contemplation and searching many guides, Ning Xuechu finally settled on a plan.
She bought paintbrushes and paper, and a jin of sweet and sour cherries.
It took her two evenings to finally prepare the gift.
Ning Xuechu satisfactorily wrapped the gift, planning to present it to An Jianqing tomorrow at the birthday party, in front of everyone.
“Xuechu, what have you been secretly busy with lately?” An Jianqing stood at the door, poking her head in to ask.
Ning Xuechu was startled by the sudden voice. The box in her hand fell to the floor, making a ‘thud’ sound.
An Jianqing looked over at the sound and saw an exquisite gift box on the floor, tied with a beautiful bow.
“Xuechu, what’s this?” An Jianqing walked into the room, looking at the box as she asked.
Hearing this, Ning Xuechu quickly picked up the box, awkwardly turned her body to hide it in the cabinet, and whispered, “It’s nothing.”
“Can I see it?” An Jianqing smiled gently, her eyes showing a hint of understanding.
“Sister, I…” Ning Xuechu saw she couldn’t hide it. Her cheeks flushed slightly, and she lowered her head shyly and nervously. “I wanted to give you this birthday gift tomorrow.”
“What if Sister wants to see it now?” An Jianqing asked with a smile, taking a few steps closer to Ning Xuechu.
She could have endured not seeing it, but seeing the child’s nervous and mysterious demeanor, a sense of eagerness arose in her heart.
Or perhaps, she wanted to tease the person in front of her.
“I…” Ning Xuechu’s nervous face grew redder, her dark, bright eyes almost turning red, as if she was about to cry.
An Jianqing, seeing this, realized her joke might have gone too far. Just as she was about to retract her words, the shy person looked up, her face filled with courageous determination.
“Sister, close your eyes, and I’ll open it for you to see,” Ning Xuechu said, her face flushed crimson. She then lowered her head again, her hands nervously rubbing the edges of the box.
An Jianqing couldn’t help but chuckle, saying half-comfortingly and half-dotingly, “Okay, I’ll close my eyes.”
Saying this, she closed her eyes, falling defencelessly into darkness.
“Sister…” Ning Xuechu called out softly, reminding her in a whisper as she unwrapped the box, “sister, you can’t peek.”
An Jianqing chuckled inwardly, suppressing her laughter and earnestly promised, “I won’t peek. I’ll only open my eyes when Xuechu says ‘okay’.”
“Then…” The last word ‘okay’ Ning Xuechu quickly swallowed back down her throat.
She carefully unwrapped the package, maintaining an innocent and simple expression on her face.
Even if An Jianqing couldn’t see, she had to act cautiously and not reveal her true nature.
Halfway through unwrapping the box, Ning Xuechu paused and waved her hand in front of An Jianqing.
“Xuechu, can I open my eyes now?” An Jianqing tilted her head slightly and asked.
The loss of vision made her more reliant on her hearing, unconsciously using her ears to capture sounds.
“Not yet,” Ning Xuechu quickly replied, her voice full of nervousness. “I have to say that word.”
“Okay,” An Jianqing agreed.
A child truly is a child. She still remembered the ‘okay’ agreement and dared not utter it easily.
Ning Xuechu secretly let out a breath. As she unwrapped the very last bit, her fingers even trembled slightly, and her heart rate quickened.
In that moment, she could barely distinguish whether this was an act or if she was genuinely nervous.
The only thing she could be sure of was that she was eagerly awaiting the expression this person would make when she saw the gift.
“Sister, it’s ready. You can open your eyes now,” Ning Xuechu whispered, her voice tinged with a tremor.
An Jianqing keenly noticed it.
The loss of sight made her other senses more acute. She could clearly perceive the child’s nervousness, and the sweet and sour cherry scent emanating from the box.
“It’s cherries,” An Jianqing said with her eyes closed, a hint of joy gracing her lips.
Ning Xuechu carefully watched this expression, staring for a few seconds, and then a hint of dissatisfaction immediately grew in her heart.
This smile was too fake; it wasn’t emanating from the depths of her heart at all, and it showed no surprise whatsoever.
“Not entirely, Sister. Open your eyes and see,” Ning Xuechu said softly, her voice full of anticipation.
An Jianqing, hearing this, felt a flicker of curiosity.
She opened her eyes, and when she clearly saw the gift in front of her, she immediately covered her mouth in surprise.
A mix of pleasant surprise and joy radiated unreservedly from her eyes.
A sense of satisfaction rose in Ning Xuechu’s heart. She bit her lip and asked nervously, “Sister, do you like it?”
“Very much! Thank you, Xuechu, this is the most surprising gift I’ve ever received,” An Jianqing smiled happily, reaching out to take the gift, examining it closely.
Inside the gift box was a colored pencil drawing of her and seven cherries.
Ning Xuechu’s drawing skills were excellent; she had depicted her features vividly, especially her eyes, which were drawn very expressively and were no less impressive than a photograph.
What truly surprised her were the seven cherries, each carved with a word, which together read ‘Happy Birthday An Jianqing.’
Such a small, creative touch was incredibly romantic and must have required a lot of thought and effort, clearly showing the extent of Ning Xuechu’s attentiveness to her birthday.
“Sister, as long as you like it, I was worried you’d dislike it… After all, my gift is very humble, and can’t compare to your friends’,” Ning Xuechu said, lowering her head, her hands clasped in front of her.
Her frail figure looked deeply self-conscious.
An Jianqing paused, immediately thinking of the ‘friends’ she had mentioned. She comforted her softly, “Xuechu, the thought is what counts. Sister prefers your heartfelt gift more.”
“Really?” Ning Xuechu looked up in surprise and hugged An Jianqing. “As long as Sister likes it, all the time and effort I spent are worth it.”
Suddenly hugged, with the scent of cherries filling her nose, An Jianqing’s body stiffened.
For the words to be carved successfully on the cherries, the child must have put in a lot of effort.
Upon hearing the joy and hint of tears in her voice, her heart softened, and she allowed herself to be embraced.
No matter how obedient and sensible she appeared, the drastically different living environment compared to before still made the child feel deeply inferior.
Her psychological immaturity made her easily influenced and deceived. Her decision to temporarily conceal the child’s identity was the correct one.
Ning Xuechu cried for a while, then consciously let go, wiped her tears, and whispered, “Sister, was I very embarrassing just now?”
“Not at all. Xuechu is very cute. No matter what you’re like, Sister likes it,” An Jianqing said with a gentle, comforting smile, reaching out to stroke Ning Xuechu’s hair. “Thanks to Xuechu today, I have another beautiful memory.”
Ning Xuechu curved her lips, smiling happily.
Although the gift was given earlier than she expected, receiving An Jianqing’s high praise wasn’t a bad thing.
“Sister, can I still attend your birthday party tomorrow?” Ning Xuechu asked cautiously, her big eyes fluttering.
“Of course, I’ll drive you there tomorrow,” An Jianqing said with a smile.
“Thank you, Sister,” Ning Xuechu’s smile broadened.
After hiding her for so long, An Jianqing was finally willing to take her out.
She just wondered what identity this woman would introduce her as.
Ning Xuechu felt a little nervous and also a little excited.
That night, she barely slept a wink, constantly guessing various possibilities in her mind and what her best reaction should be when facing An Jianqing’s friends.
After repeatedly rehearsing many scenarios in her mind, the sky unknowingly began to brighten.
Ning Xuechu hadn’t slept all night but didn’t feel tired at all.
“Xuechu, did you not sleep well last night? You look a bit pale,” An Jianqing asked concernedly while eating breakfast.
“It’s Sister’s birthday today. I’m very happy,” Ning Xuechu said, pursing her lips into a smile, a faint blush rising on her face.
An Jianqing couldn’t help but chuckle.
It was her birthday, yet Ning Xuechu was as happy as if it were her own.
However, this also indicated Ning Xuechu’s regard for her; otherwise, she wouldn’t care so much about her birthday.
“Xuechu, come to my room in a bit. I have something I’d like your help with,” An Jianqing said hesitantly, her delicate cheeks gradually turning red, as if shy and bashful.
Ning Xuechu paused, then quickly reacted and agreed with a smile, “Sister, what is it?”
“You’ll know in a moment,” An Jianqing replied softly, then lowered her head to hide her flushed cheeks.
Ning Xuechu felt extremely confused, constantly guessing the possibilities of the matter, so much so that she had no appetite for the rest of breakfast.
Upon entering An Jianqing’s room, her eyes were again met with a room full of vibrant roses.
Even after two days, these roses were still fresh, their fragrance undiminished.
“Achoo!” Ning Xuechu sneezed, gently wiping her nose with her hand.
The rose scent here was too strong, to the point of being pungent, yet An Jianqing showed no discomfort at all, even appearing to enjoy it.
“Xuechu, which outfit do you think I should wear?” An Jianqing asked in a low voice, blushing, pointing to a stack of clothes on the bed.
Ning Xuechu’s throat constricted, and a nameless anger rose in her heart.
