- Chapter 15 - Sleeping in the Same Room
The background music in the movie was still terrifying, the monster’s roars sounded as if they could kill the protagonist at any moment, pushing the atmosphere to a nail-bitbiting climax.
Ning Xuechu secretly opened a sliver of her eyes, glanced at the screen, and then quickly closed them again.
She trembled with fear, holding An Jianqing even tighter with both hands, softly murmuring, “So scary…”
An Jianqing chuckled softly, reaching out to embrace the person in her arms, her slender fingers rhythmically patting that slender back.
The plot of this movie wasn’t particularly terrifying; only some of the visuals and background designs were more frightening, enough to scare timid people.
The child’s body kept trembling. She was clearly very afraid, yet also particularly curious to know the protagonist’s fate.
“It’s okay, the protagonist is out of danger now. It’s not scary at all anymore,” An Jianqing said softly.
Ning Xuechu half-believed, half-doubted as she opened her eyes. Seeing the ordinary scene in the movie, she immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
She glanced at An Jianqing, then awkwardly withdrew her hand, blushing as she softly asked, “Sister, was I very embarrassing just now?”
An Jianqing chuckled, “Horror films are quite scary. It’s perfectly normal for Xuechu to be afraid.”
“Why isn’t Sister afraid?” Ning Xuechu asked curiously.
“Probably because Xuechu is here,” An Jianqing replied with a smile.
Under the dim light, her bright eyes shone with a gentle glow, like a beautiful night elf, captivating and heartwarming.
Ning Xuechu lowered her head and pressed a hand over her heart.
She knew An Jianqing’s playful remark was just to comfort her, yet her heart, despite herself, started to beat faster.
Ning Xuechu felt a little annoyed.
She hadn’t even conquered the other person’s heart, and yet she herself was already flustered.
The rest of the plot became bland, with no more terrifying scenes than before.
Ning Xuechu couldn’t find an opportunity to get closer, so she simply sat quietly.
The movie ended, and the room returned to brightness.
An Jianqing stood up and said with a smile, “Xuechu, sit here for a while. I’m going to wash the cherries.”
“Okay,” Ning Xuechu replied obediently.
The sound of running water came from the bathroom. Soon, An Jianqing emerged with the washed cherries in a fruit bowl.
Ning Xuechu looked up and saw a tall, slender figure approaching, a faint, gentle smile on that beautiful face.
Her heart fluttered. For a moment, she had the illusion that they were a couple.
“Xuechu, try some,” An Jianqing put down the fruit bowl and held a cherry between her fingers.
Ning Xuechu leaned forward, and in that position, took the cherry into her mouth, consuming it in one bite.
A warm, moist sensation traveled from her fingertips. An Jianqing’s heart tightened, and she quickly placed her hand by her side, saying a little flustered, “I’ll go make two cups of milk.”
Without waiting for Ning Xuechu’s reply, An Jianqing had already left the room.
Ning Xuechu watched that graceful figure, sensing a hint of hasty retreat.
She frowned slightly, lowered her head, and slowly chewed the cherry in her mouth. Beneath its sweet and sour exterior, there seemed to be a soft touch.
Ning Xuechu couldn’t help but recall the scene just now.
She had instinctively taken the cherry into her mouth, not intentionally, and she had also noticed An Jianqing’s stiffness in that instant.
She had originally intended to apologize immediately to ease the awkwardness, but An Jianqing didn’t give her the chance.
But it was good. This ambiguous situation was exactly the outcome she desired.
An Jianqing entered the room with two cups of milk. Her expression had returned to normal. She walked to the coffee table and said, “Xuechu, drink some milk to calm down. I’m going to put on an art film.”
“Okay, Sister,” Ning Xuechu’s eyes curved in a smile, pretending not to have noticed anything.
An Jianqing set up the movie, sat in the corner of the sofa, and slowly sipped her milk.
She watched the movie intently, occasionally pausing and furrowing her brows in thought.
Ning Xuechu wasn’t interested in art films and spent her time constantly eating cherries.
The movie wasn’t even halfway over when she finished all the cherries. After that, she could only watch the movie out of boredom.
Watching the two protagonists making goo-goo eyes at each other and engaging in ambiguous scenes, Ning Xuechu found it incredibly dull.
She turned her head to look at An Jianqing, who was watching with concentration, completely immersed in the plot.
The moment the two protagonists were forced to separate, she clearly saw glistening tears fall from An Jianqing’s eyes.
Ning Xuechu felt unimpressed.
In her many years of life experience, she had never witnessed sincere and happy love. Instead, she had seen countless family squabbles and conflicts of interest.
She didn’t believe in love, or rather, she didn’t believe that anyone could withstand the temptation of money and fame and be consistently good to someone.
At least, she hadn’t met such a person.
“Sister…” Ning Xuechu softly called out, offering a tissue.
An Jianqing reached out and took it, smiling a little awkwardly. “Thank you, Xuechu.”
Her voice was a little choked, tinged with a cry. Her cool demeanor now carried a vulnerability that made her appear lovable.
Ning Xuechu only glanced at her before turning her head back to the screen.
Even though she resented An Jianqing for occupying the Ning family’s assets, she had to admit that this woman possessed a captivating beauty that could utterly charm anyone.
One could easily be bewitched if not careful.
Unbeknownst to them, the movie ended.
An Jianqing wiped away her tears and, regaining her composure, saw that the person sitting on the sofa had already lain down and seemed to be asleep.
She walked over, knelt down to look, and softly called out, “Xuechu, wake up…”
Ning Xuechu’s eyes were tightly closed, her breathing even, showing no reaction.
An Jianqing called a few more times but still couldn’t wake her. She found a blanket and covered Ning Xuechu with it.
She then dimmed the lights in the room, quietly walked to the desk, and opened her laptop.
Listening to the ‘thump-thump’ of the keyboard in the room, Ning Xuechu waited for a while before secretly opening her eyes.
Seeing An Jianqing busy at the computer, she guessed that the other person must be dealing with company matters.
So far, An Jianqing hadn’t mentioned anything about the Ning family’s industry to her, as if she wanted to keep her completely separate from it.
Family businesses were usually inherited by Alphas; almost no one would entrust a family enterprise to a delicate and soft Omega.
This was because Omegas were affected by Alpha pheromones and often acted on emotion, which was a fatal weakness in the brutal world of business.
Clearly, An Jianqing had no intention of handing over the Ning family’s assets to her.
But for now, she couldn’t reveal her Alpha identity.
As far as she knew, besides An Jianqing, the Ning family also had an uncle and an Alpha cousin.
Both of these were rivals for the inheritance.
If it became known that she was an Alpha and had inheritance rights, she might not live to see the day she inherited the assets.
Her Omega identity was not only used to deceive An Jianqing but also served as her lifeline.
Until she could ensure her safety, pretending to be an Omega was the best option.
After a period of aimless thought, perhaps because the room was too warm, Ning Xuechu felt drowsiness creeping in and finally succumbed to a deep sleep.
An Jianqing finished her work, rubbed her sore shoulders, and looked back in Ning Xuechu’s direction.
The long-limbed person was curled up like a rabbit, huddled in the corner of the sofa, looking a little pitiful.
An Jianqing chuckled softly. Fearing she might wake the sleeping person, she quietly got up without making any sound.
The floor was covered with a soft carpet. She walked slowly, knelt by the sofa, and quietly gazed at that well-behaved sleeping face.
Unbeknownst to her, the child had been here for almost a month.
She still remembered the first day the child arrived here, the apprehension hidden in her clear black pupils.
It should have been her own home, yet she felt helpless like a stranger, with even her closest parents no longer in this world.
This kind of fear and helplessness was very familiar to her.
She had felt the same way when she first came to this home.
And she was lucky; the love that should have belonged to this child was given entirely to her by the Ning couple.
Now, it was her turn to return it.
An Jianqing smiled gently, reaching out to brush away the strands of hair falling across Ning Xuechu’s forehead.
“Mmm…” Ning Xuechu rolled over, letting out an unconscious murmur.
This movement accidentally pressed An Jianqing’s hand, which she hadn’t managed to withdraw, under Ning Xuechu’s neck.
An Jianqing wiggled her fingers, trying to pull her hand back, but Ning Xuechu was pressing down very tightly. Fearing she might wake her, she struggled for a long time before finally managing to pull her hand out.
Her fingers, having been pressed for a long time, were slightly red, and a faint sweet and sour cherry scent emanated from her fingertips.
An Jianqing’s nose twitched; she felt a little strange.
She leaned in, following the source of the scent, and finally stopped beside Ning Xuechu’s shoulder.
The cherry scent was stronger here.
An Jianqing’s eyes flickered, and a reddish-orange glow appeared in her vision. She extended her finger, gently twisted it, and immediately felt a dampness on her fingertip.
She placed her finger under the dim light and finally saw that it was cherry juice.
An Jianqing secretly breathed a sigh of relief, chuckling at her own previous thought.
Just for a moment, she had thought it was Ning Xuechu’s pheromone scent.
But why would an Omega’s pheromones make her heart race nervously?
An Jianqing frowned, then after a moment, her brows relaxed, and she got up and lay down on the bed to sleep.
When Ning Xuechu woke up, she realized she wasn’t in her own room.
She was startled and alertly sat up. Seeing the room’s arrangement, she immediately remembered that she had pretended to be asleep last night and actually fallen asleep in An Jianqing’s room.
Ning Xuechu bit her lip in annoyance, and hearing the sound of the door opening, she quickly lay back down.
“Xuechu, it’s time to get up. You’ll be late if you don’t get up now,” An Jianqing opened the door and said softly.
Hearing this, Ning Xuechu pretended to just be waking up and sat up.
An Jianqing’s sofa was spacious and soft. After sleeping there all night, she felt no discomfort.
“Sister, I’m sorry. I unknowingly fell asleep yesterday. I promise I won’t do it again next time,” Ning Xuechu said, lowering her head, her voice full of apology.
If an Omega slept in an Alpha’s room, everyone would assume the Omega was deliberately seducing the Alpha.
Although she did have that intention, she absolutely couldn’t let An Jianqing discover her true purpose.
“Have breakfast. I’ll have the housekeeper drive you to school later,” An Jianqing said with a smile, avoiding the topic.
Ning Xuechu’s heart pounded. She couldn’t immediately guess the meaning of that statement. She could only feign obedience.
After breakfast, An Jianqing left first.
Ning Xuechu glanced at the time and found that An Jianqing had left five minutes earlier than usual.
Her unease intensified, and she regretted her deliberate actions of the previous day.
Sitting in the driver’s car, Ning Xuechu pondered all the way. As they were about to get out of the car, she asked, “Sister, is she angry with me today?”
“Miss Ning, don’t overthink it. Miss An probably has company matters,” the driver said politely.
“That’s great! I thought I had done something wrong to make Sister angry,” Ning Xuechu smiled happily, appearing utterly innocent and harmless.
Just as she was about to get out of the car, someone tapped on the car window.
“Excuse me, are you Miss Ning Xuechu?” A woman in a suit, with a sweet smile, stood outside.
She was an Omega, holding a large bouquet of vibrant roses.
In the air, besides the scent of roses, there was also the smell of red wine, exactly like the roses An Jianqing had bought that day.
Ning Xuechu felt an alert in her heart but didn’t show it on her face. She asked in confusion, “Sister, who are you?”
“Miss Ning, these are roses from our CEO Qiu. Wishing you a pleasant day,” the woman said with a smile, respectfully handing over the roses with both hands.
Hearing the words ‘CEO Qiu,’ Ning Xuechu immediately thought of ‘Qiu Mengxi.’
She took the flowers with a bewildered expression, looked left and right, and asked in confusion, “Why would CEO Qiu send me roses?”
“Because Miss Ning is very lovely. Flowers suit beauties; it’s only natural,” the woman’s voice was sweet, and her words were pleasant to hear.
Ning Xuechu’s face flushed, and she quickly handed the flowers back. “I can’t take these flowers.”
“If Miss Ning doesn’t want them, you can throw them away,” the woman said, her smiling face showing no hint of joking. “These flowers now belong to Miss Ning. How you wish to dispose of them is Miss Ning’s right.”
The woman repeatedly called her ‘Miss Ning,’ showing great respect.
In just a few minutes, she had used both soft and hard tactics. Someone with a weak will could easily be swept away by the woman’s sweet words.
Ning Xuechu lowered her head, thought for a moment, placed the flowers on the seat, and said to the driver, “Could you please deliver these to Sister for me? I remember Sister really likes the scent of these roses.”
“Miss Ning is very thoughtful. I will definitely deliver them to Miss An,” the driver said with a smile.
Ning Xuechu offered a happy smile and turned to walk towards the school.
Soon, the smile on her face disappeared, replaced by a serious expression.
The meaning behind Qiu Mengxi sending flowers was likely that she wanted to pursue her.
Being pursued by an Alpha was not a pleasant experience.
Of course, she wasn’t so foolish as to think Qiu Mengxi was pursuing her because she liked her; this was definitely a game of chasing prey.
She had no interest in playing this game with Qiu Mengxi.
Having the driver send the flowers to An Jianqing was to let An Jianqing know about this matter.
As for how An Jianqing would handle it, that was not her concern.
An Jianqing returned to her desk after the meeting and saw a bouquet of vibrant roses on it.
A hint of confusion flashed in her eyes, and she asked her assistant, “Who sent these?”
“Driver Uncle Zhang sent them. He asked me to tell you that ‘CEO Qiu sent them to Miss Ning, and Miss Ning asked me to bring them over,'” the assistant repeated, looking confused.
An Jianqing’s expression changed upon hearing this, and she dismissed her assistant.
She took out her phone, dialed Qiu Mengxi’s number, and asked seriously, “Mengxi, why did you send flowers to Xuechu?”
“Aren’t you asking the obvious?” Qiu Mengxi countered, her composed chuckle suggesting she had already anticipated this call.
Hearing this, a surge of anger rose in An Jianqing’s heart. “You should know her identity. She’s not someone you can toy with casually.”
Qiu Mengxi fell silent, the smile vanishing from her face. After a while, she chuckled again and said, “Jianqing, are you angry with me?”
The voice on the other end of the phone was cynical. An Jianqing’s expression became even more serious. “Mengxi, if you’re not sincere, don’t approach Xuechu. I won’t allow anyone to hurt her.”
“Does ‘anyone’ include me?” Qiu Mengxi’s smile disappeared, and her voice lowered.
“Yes,” An Jianqing replied firmly.
Her fingers, gripping the phone, trembled slightly, and her heart felt a sharp, needle-like pain.
She had never thought that one day she would speak to this person in such a stern tone.
“Jianqing, since you want me to be serious, then I’ll be serious for once. This marriage would be a great joy for both the Qiu and Ning families,” Qiu Mengxi chuckled, her tone becoming serious.
An Jianqing was startled, her throat felt as if it was being squeezed, unable to utter a rebuttal.
She watched the call disconnect, then sat down with a blank expression.
After a long time, she closed her eyes tightly, concealing the sorrowful light within them.
