- Chapter 3 - Making a Decision
After finishing her last class on Friday, Ning Xuechu got into the car to go back.
Her uncle’s family lived in a small town, and each trip back was a bumpy two-hour ride.
The people on the bus carried various types of luggage, emitting strange and pungent odors.
Ning Xuechu frowned uncomfortably and closed her eyes to sleep, but the noisy chatter around her prevented her from drifting off.
Frowning, she opened her eyes and saw the silhouette of a small car flash past the window.
She couldn’t help but think of An Jianqing’s high-end private car. Its exterior was luxurious and beautiful, and riding in it was incredibly comfortable; it didn’t make her feel dizzy at all.
Moreover, the car felt spacious inside, always enveloped in a faint, pleasant fragrance.
Just like the scent of that woman, it was captivating.
“You can call me anytime if you need anything.” These words echoed in her ears.
Ning Xuechu’s eyes flickered. She took out the business card, warmed by her grip, from her pocket.
The gilded letters on it stimulated her eyes, and the two words “President” hammered at her heart.
She had researched some information based on the company name on the card, as well as related gossip.
An Jianqing was an orphan, adopted by the Ning couple at the age of six, and since then, she had lived a wealthy life as a young lady of a prominent family.
At eighteen, An Jianqing differentiated into an S-class Alpha.
Rumors in the outside world claimed that the Ning family’s fortune would all fall into the hands of An Jianqing, their adopted daughter.
But surprisingly, An Jianqing was still unmarried, and she didn’t even have a romantic partner.
Many rumors suggested that An Jianqing was deliberately putting on a show for others, implying she might already have illegitimate children elsewhere.
Whether it was influential media or obscure tabloids, they all hinted that An Jianqing had malicious intentions, wanting to monopolize the Ning family’s assets.
If she truly was the biological daughter of the Ning couple, then she would never let the Ning family’s assets fall into An Jianqing’s hands.
Ning Xuechu gripped the card tightly until it was a crumpled mess before letting go.
She lowered her head, stared at it for a few seconds, and then emotionlessly tore it into tiny pieces.
She had already clearly remembered the information on it, including that string of phone numbers that could change the fate of her life.
By the time she returned to the small town, it was already past midnight.
Ning Xuechu hadn’t eaten anything all morning, and her stomach was now growling.
Looking at the exquisitely decorated house before her, a hint of resentment surfaced in her cold eyes.
Her adoptive parents, surnamed Ning, died in a car accident when she was ten.
The large compensation and savings they left behind were entirely seized by her uncle’s family. She was too young at the time to resist.
Over the years, her uncle’s family often abused her, treating her like a servant and frequently hitting and kicking her.
She hated everything here.
One day, she would personally seek revenge and make these people experience the suffering she had endured.
Ning Xuechu entered the front gate and placed the fruit she bought on the table.
If she came back empty-handed, she would inevitably be lectured by her aunt.
“Ning Xuechu, clean the table. Guests are coming soon,” her aunt said, lounging comfortably on the sofa, cracking melon seeds while watching TV.
“Okay, Aunt,” Ning Xuechu replied obediently, lowering her eyes.
“You, as an Omega, will eventually marry anyway. Why bother studying so much? Isn’t that a waste of money? I’ve arranged a marriage for you, with Old Li’s son from the front street. Although he’s a Beta, he’s filial, and their family offers a generous bride price. You should marry well and give birth to a plump little boy with peace of mind,” her aunt lectured, her face showing disdain as if she were bestowing a favor.
Ning Xuechu gritted her teeth, suppressing the hatred surging from deep within her heart, and whispered, “Aunt, I want to study. When I earn money in the future, I will be filial to you.”
Her words were humble and pleading.
“Study what? This money is for your Alpha older sister to marry a wife,” her aunt snapped, rolling her eyes.
Ning Xuechu remained silent, lowering her head and continuing to wipe the table.
Here, she had no say. All her resistance only resulted in cruel beatings.
She had once thought that she would escape this place when she grew up.
But now, she didn’t want to leave with all her pain quietly.
One day, she would trample all those who had bullied her underfoot.
“What are you looking at? Go change into some clean clothes. Don’t embarrass us outside,” her aunt said impatiently.
“Okay, Aunt,” Ning Xuechu clenched her fists, her eyes, filled with hatred, becoming resolute.
Rather than having her marriage arranged like a commodity here, she would rather believe in that absurd dream of a wealthy family.
Regardless of whether An Jianqing had ulterior motives, regardless of whether this was a pre-meditated trap, she had to gamble.
Ning Xuechu took out her phone, her fingertips trembling slightly as she dialed the numbers etched in her heart.
Looking at the dialed numbers, various complex emotions flickered in her eyes, finally transforming into resolute hatred.
With a light touch of her finger, the call went through.
At this moment, a great excitement, akin to revenge, faintly rose in Ning Xuechu’s heart.
The call was answered instantly. A familiar yet unfamiliar gentle female voice came through, “Xuechu, have you made up your mind?”
“I’ve made up my mind. I’m going back with you,” Ning Xuechu said through gritted teeth, her gaze resolute.
“Good. Where are you? I’ll come pick you up,” the voice on the other end of the line was filled with happy laughter, sounding as warm as that jacket.
Ning Xuechu’s heart trembled, and the last shred of her apprehension vanished.
Even if what lay ahead was a game concocted by the wealthy, she would brave it and win the final victory.
Hanging up the phone, Ning Xuechu held her phone calmly.
She thought she would be excited, but at this moment, her heart was still.
As if she hadn’t made this significant call.
After changing her clothes, Ning Xuechu went downstairs.
She sliced the fruit, arranged it nicely on a platter, and placed it on the table. Then she sat quietly to the side.
“Ning Xuechu, I’ve raised you all these years, putting in so much effort. Don’t be an ungrateful wretch in the future. When you earn money, you must be filial to me, understand?” Her aunt’s face was sharp, filled with the confident expression of being in control.
She wasn’t worried that Ning Xuechu would refuse.
“I understand, Aunt,” Ning Xuechu said, lowering her head, obedient and compliant.
Her aunt’s expression turned smug, as she leisurely ate the fruit.
After waiting for two hours, the sound of a car was heard outside.
Ning Xuechu immediately went out.
Seeing the tall figure step out of the car, her heart gave a fierce tremor, and all the bl00d in her body boiled at that moment.
“Xuechu, I’ve come to pick you up,” a gentle voice sounded in her ear, carrying a calming power.
Ning Xuechu’s eyes reddened, and she almost cried.
Countless nights, she had sat alone by the door, gazing at the dark night, fantasizing that someone would take her away from this tormenting home.
Now, that wish had come true.
“Who are you? Do you know my Xuechu?” Her aunt ran out. Seeing An Jianqing, her arrogant and domineering expression instantly transformed into a wide smile.
She even carried a hint of flattery and eagerness to please.
“I am Xuechu’s older sister. I’ve come to take Xuechu home this time,” An Jianqing said with a polite smile.
Understanding the implication, her aunt’s attitude immediately turned insolent, and she loudly proclaimed, “Xuechu is our child. I’ve raised Xuechu for so many years; how can I just hand her over to you for free?”
She repeated ‘Xuechu’ over and over, as if their relationship was profound, but her underlying meaning was chilling.
Everyone present understood that the woman meant she wanted money to let Ning Xuechu go.
Ning Xuechu lowered her head, her gaze flickering as she glanced at An Jianqing, her thin face filled with helplessness.
“Don’t worry, you go to the car first. I’ll handle everything,” An Jianqing smiled gently, her steady gaze inspiring trust.
Ning Xuechu bit her lip, looking at her aunt with tearful eyes, and softly said, “Aunt, I want to study; I don’t want to marry.”
“Ning Xuechu, if you dare to leave with this woman today, I’ll break your legs,” her aunt threatened viciously, her eyes glinting.
“Aunt…” Ning Xuechu flinched, instinctively shrinking back, trying to evade.
“Xuechu, I’m here, don’t be afraid.” A gentle voice brushed her ear, and a pair of soft hands landed on her trembling shoulders.
Ning Xuechu looked up, her panicked gaze meeting a beautiful, cool face.
She seemed startled, immediately lowering her head, not daring to make a sound.
Seeing Ning Xuechu’s frightened look, An Jianqing’s eyes hardened, and she signaled to a bodyguard.
The bodyguard immediately escorted Ning Xuechu toward the car.
Her aunt cursed loudly behind them, wanting to chase Ning Xuechu with a broom like she used to, but she was restrained.
Ning Xuechu got into the car, and the fear in her eyes gradually turned into coldness.
She turned her head, watching the woman who always hit and scolded her in her memory scream like a shrew, reduced to wailing and throwing a tantrum on the ground against the strong bodyguards. A sense of pleasure rose within her.
Ning Xuechu’s lips curved in delight. The timid and helpless look on her face completely disappeared, replaced by nothing but sinister hatred in her dark pupils.
After enduring for so many years, someone was finally helping her get her revenge.
Ning Xuechu wanted to laugh loudly and freely, but she knew she couldn’t.
In front of an Alpha as outstanding as An Jianqing, she had to be extra vigilant and cautious, absolutely not letting the other party see anything amiss.
Otherwise, if An Jianqing wanted to deal with her, it would just be a matter of a single word.
And she would be utterly powerless to resist.
In just ten minutes, An Jianqing had dealt with her aunt.
Hearing the silence outside, Ning Xuechu immediately sat up straight, her hands properly placed on her knees, head bowed, staring at her toes.
“Xuechu, I’ve taken care of it. From today onwards, I will protect you and won’t let anyone bully you,” An Jianqing opened the car door, making a solemn promise.
Her eyes were serious and bright as stars.
Ning Xuechu’s expression wavered, as if she couldn’t believe it. Crystal tears flowed freely, and her lips parted, but she choked, unable to speak.
“Xuechu, I know you’ve suffered all these years. From now on, you are the young lady of the Ning family; you won’t have to endure any more grievances,” An Jianqing’s heart softened, and she reached out and embraced the crying woman.
Suddenly enveloped in a warm embrace, surrounded by the pleasant scent of an Alpha.
A faint, fresh fragrance wafted into her nostrils. Ning Xuechu’s pupils constricted, and her body stiffened for a moment.
Soon, she relaxed, letting herself be held, and softly cried, “Will you really protect me forever?”
Her timid words carried heartbreaking helplessness and vulnerability.
An Jianqing’s expression softened, revealing a gentle smile. She nodded softly and solemnly, “Xuechu, you are my sister. I will protect you forever.”
A trusting smile bloomed on Ning Xuechu’s tear-streaked face.
She had deceived this woman.
