- Chapter 7 - Thunder and Lightning
Today was Saturday. The clear afternoon sky suddenly turned heavily overcast in the evening.
Soon, a torrential downpour began, hitting the ground with loud ‘swishing’ sounds.
Ning Xuechu, wearing a thin sweater, stood by the window, reaching out to open a small gap, emotionlessly watching the increasingly fierce rain outside.
Suddenly, a luxurious car caught her eye, and a woman of outstanding temperament stepped out.
The servants, who had been waiting nearby, immediately rushed over with umbrellas. No matter how heavy the rain, not a single drop touched the woman.
A hint of resentful jealousy appeared in Ning Xuechu’s dark eyes.
On rainy days, no one held an umbrella for her. She didn’t even have a complete umbrella and could only cover her head with leaves, running quickly through the rain.
Sometimes, when her aunt was in a bad mood, she would even lock her out in the rain at night.
She could only huddle under the eaves, enduring the biting cold.
While she was lonely and helpless, this woman was waited on hand and foot, enjoying everything that should have belonged to her.
Ning Xuechu gritted her teeth, clutching the curtain tightly, her resentment growing heavier.
When the woman’s gaze swept over, she instinctively let go and sidled behind the curtain.
Ning Xuechu’s heart inexplicably quickened. After waiting for two minutes, a knock came from outside the door.
She quickly ran to the bed, swiftly ruffled her hair with her hands, and then wrapped herself in the blanket.
“Xuechu, it’s me. I’m coming in,” An Jianqing said before opening the door.
She glanced around the room, strode to the bed, and saw a bulging shape on the bed trembling incessantly. Her heart immediately ached.
She had been working overtime at the company, but upon hearing from the housemaid that the child hadn’t left her room all day and hadn’t eaten dinner, she rushed back worriedly.
Seeing this scene, her worries were confirmed. She said softly, “Xuechu, Sister is here, don’t be afraid.”
As soon as her voice fell, a dazzling flash of lightning streaked across the window outside. A ‘rumbling’ sound seemed to rip through the sky.
Hearing this sound, the person under the blanket trembled even more violently, crouching lower.
An Jianqing, seeing this, felt even more heartache. She sat on the edge of the bed, pinched a corner of the blanket with both hands, and softened her voice to coax, “Xuechu, don’t be afraid, Sister is here.”
“Sister…” A faint sob came from under the blanket, like a helpless small animal.
“It’s me,” An Jianqing immediately responded, waiting patiently.
After a long while, a pair of dark, wet eyes peered out from under the blanket, looking utterly pitiful, as if abandoned.
“Sister, I’m scared…” Ning Xuechu pursed her lips. As soon as she spoke, she quickly hid back under the blanket, her body shaking like a sieve.
Another loud clap of thunder sounded outside.
An Jianqing was startled by the sudden noise.
The rain was indeed fierce tonight, accompanied by thunder and lightning, which was quite frightening.
“Xuechu, eat something. You haven’t eaten all day,” An Jianqing said softly, gently tugging at the corner of the blanket with her fingers.
As she moved, the person inside became even more agitated, pressing the blanket down tightly.
“I’m not hungry… I’m not going out, it’s so scary outside…” Ning Xuechu’s teeth chattered, and a fearful sob came from under the blanket.
An Jianqing, while heartbroken, felt a little helpless. She patiently continued to coax, “With sister here, the lightning won’t hurt Xuechu.”
Ning Xuechu shook her head desperately, the blanket trembling violently with her. “I’m scared…”
Her sobs were even worse than before.
An Jianqing lowered her gaze, pondered for a moment, then hugged the person inside through the blanket with both hands. She softly asked, “Xuechu, do you feel better?”
A slight warmth from another person’s body penetrated the thin blanket. Ning Xuechu’s mind reeled, and her gaze was fixed, as if she were stunned.
She hadn’t expected An Jianqing to make such a gesture.
In her imagination, An Jianqing should have impatiently scolded her. How could she embrace her so gently?
Feeling that the person under the blanket had calmed down, An Jianqing smiled faintly.
Her melodious and gentle voice was like beautiful musical notes, capable of dispelling the fear in one’s heart.
Ning Xuechu had to admit that this woman’s voice was very pleasant, carrying a magical power that could soothe people.
She bit her lip, driving out these inexplicable thoughts.
“Xuechu, are you still scared?” An Jianqing asked softly, her voice gentle.
Hearing this, Ning Xuechu deliberated for a moment, then cautiously loosened a corner of the blanket, peeking her head out to reveal tear-filled eyes.
“The rain has stopped, and there will be no more thunder and lightning,” An Jianqing said with a soft smile, her beautiful eyes filled with gentle affection.
Ning Xuechu’s eyes widened, as if she were enchanted. She paused for a moment before regaining clarity.
She cautiously turned her head, her vigilant eyes looking towards the window, listening carefully for a while. Confirming that she heard no rain, her eyes immediately lit up. “It’s true, the rain stopped.”
“Yes, Xuechu, get up and eat. Otherwise, you’ll be hungry when you sleep,” An Jianqing coaxed softly, a doting smile in her eyes.
Ning Xuechu’s face flushed. She bit her lip nervously, her eyes flickering, then lowered her head. “Sister, I’m sorry for troubling you. I’m such a coward…”
“It’s okay. Xuechu is already very brave. If you ever feel scared again, be sure to tell sister; don’t keep it bottled up inside,” An Jianqing said, gently touching her messy hair, her tone mild as she interrupted the rest of the sentence.
Hearing the concern in her words, Ning Xuechu’s nose tingled, and she almost cried out loud.
“Alright, Xuechu is a brave girl; she mustn’t cry,” An Jianqing said with a light chuckle, withdrawing her hand, and standing up. “I’ll go get your food.”
Ning Xuechu sniffled and nodded obediently.
Watching An Jianqing close the door, she reached up and pinched her nose.
Feeling the tears streaming down her nose, her eyes widened.
Just now, because of An Jianqing’s words, she had truly felt like crying.
In that moment, even she couldn’t tell how much of the tears in her eyes were real or fake.
Ning Xuechu fiercely wiped away the tears from her fingertips, her gaze becoming resolute, as if she had never cried.
She sat on the bed for a while. The door was pushed open again, and the aroma of food filled the air.
Before Ning Xuechu could do anything, her stomach let out a ‘grumble.’
She quickly covered her stomach, pursing her lips and lowering her head.
Seeing the child blush with embarrassment, An Jianqing couldn’t help but chuckle. She brought the food to the bedside and said with a smile, “Xuechu, eat quickly; it’s still warm.”
“Thank you, sister,” Ning Xuechu blinked, her face feeling hot.
Ning Xuechu had been hungry all day and ate her dinner quickly.
Suddenly, she paused, her lips slightly parted, swallowing hard.
“Did you choke?” An Jianqing asked concernedly, handing her a glass of warm water.
Ning Xuechu quickly took it, blushed, and nodded, slowing down her chewing.
After dinner, a servant brought fruit and cleared away the dishes before leaving.
“Xuechu, eat slowly. I still have some things to deal with,” An Jianqing said softly, standing up to leave.
As she turned, her fingers were clutched by a hand. She turned her head and met a pair of tear-filled eyes, containing a silent plea.
“Sister…” Ning Xuechu called out, standing up anxiously.
As if afraid of being abandoned, she tightly held An Jianqing’s hand, cautiously speaking, “sister, can you stay and keep me company a little longer?”
An Jianqing, hearing this, thought for a brief moment, nodded, and sat back down.
Ning Xuechu sat down with her, not touching the fruit, just staring intently at An Jianqing with tear-filled eyes that seemed to hold a thousand words.
An Jianqing couldn’t help but chuckle, saying softly, “I’m here. Eat your fruit, and I’ll leave after you finish.”
Ning Xuechu’s eyes widened, as if she couldn’t believe it. She quickly grabbed a piece of fruit and put it in her mouth.
She chewed while staring at An Jianqing, the tension on her face as if she was afraid of being deceived.
An Jianqing sighed softly, paused for a moment, and then said playfully, “Xuechu, what kind of Alpha do you like? Sister will help you find an Alpha who can protect you later, okay?”
Hearing this, Ning Xuechu shook her head in horror, urgently grasping An Jianqing’s wrist with both hands. “Sister, I don’t want to marry…”
Once she left this family, the Ning family’s assets would have nothing to do with her.
All her efforts and plans would turn into foam.
“Silly child, Omegas always marry eventually. Isn’t it good for sister to help you find someone you like?” An Jianqing said with a smile, a subtle hint of sadness flashing in her gentle eyes.
Ning Xuechu continued to shake her head, her nervousness turning into panic.
Seeing An Jianqing’s firm attitude, she lowered her head and remained silent for a long time before softly saying, “I like a gentle Alpha like sister, someone who will care for me, protect me…”
Towards the end, her low voice became urgent and serious.
An Jianqing’s heart tightened, and the smile on her face faltered.
Looking at the hand gripping her wrist, so thin yet so strong, a hint of panic flashed through her heart. She then smiled again and said, “So Xuechu likes the gentle type of Alpha. Sister knows many gentle Alphas. I’ll introduce you to them another day.”
Ning Xuechu shook her head. As if gathering courage, she looked up, her bright eyes firm and serious. “I only like sister…”
“Alright, it’s getting late. I should go back to my room to handle things,” An Jianqing said, interrupting her with a gentle but undeniable tone.
After saying this, she withdrew her hand and left without any hesitation.
With a ‘bang,’ the door closed. Ning Xuechu looked at her empty palm, her eyes gradually turning cold.
An Jianqing was indeed still guarding against her; her kindness was merely a facade.
This woman was eager to marry her off, not wanting her to stay in this home.
The reason she was so kind to her was simply because she was an Omega and would eventually marry, thus not competing with an Alpha for property.
She wouldn’t let this woman get her way.
Ning Xuechu clenched her fingers, her expression turning ruthless.
