- Chapter 8 - Snow Falling Everywhere
Time flew by, and before she knew it, Ning Xuechu had been living with the Ning family for over half a month.
Ning Xuechu had almost completely adapted to her current life and had gradually figured out An Jianqing’s ‘bottom line’.
As long as she didn’t say anything similar to what she said last time, An Jianqing was perfectly accommodating and a wonderfully thoughtful older sister.
But once she crossed that line, An Jianqing would reveal the coldness hidden beneath her gentleness.
She had witnessed An Jianqing’s powerful and aloof side back at her uncle’s house.
These days, accustomed to this person’s gentleness and thoughtfulness, she subconsciously thought she was an exception, and that An Jianqing wouldn’t be cold to her.
But in the end, she was wrong.
How could there be true affection within a prominent family?
Ning Xuechu played with her pen, gazing at the darkening sky outside the window, not listening to the lecture.
When the bell for the last class rang, excited cheers suddenly erupted outside. “It’s snowing! The first snow of the year.”
As this sound fell, a flurry of footsteps echoed in the corridor.
Then, more and more people cheered, “It’s snowing…”
These three words, like happy particles, spread rapidly, stirring people’s hearts.
Soon, the corridor was filled with people, chatting in twos and threes, smiles on their faces.
Some reached out to catch the falling snowflakes, watching them quietly melt, or gently breathed on them, letting the snowflakes dance.
Ning Xuechu, with her backpack, watched quietly for a few seconds, then walked downstairs with a cool expression.
She didn’t like snow.
Every time it snowed, she had to brave the bitter cold, armed with a small shovel and broom, to meticulously clear the accumulated snow.
Even if her fingers froze crimson, she had to clear the snow, or she would be beaten and starved.
Some said white snow on one’s head was romantic, but all she saw was endless cold.
Ning Xuechu walked along the path, listening to the continuous joyful laughter around her.
She looked up. White snow had already dusted many people’s hair, even their eyebrows.
But those people didn’t care at all, their frost-nipped cheeks beaming with cheerful and excited smiles.
Ning Xuechu paused, gazing at the continuously falling snowflakes.
After a long stare, she reached out, caught a flake, and then squeezed it tightly.
A slight dampness mixed with cold spread across her palm. Ning Xuechu frowned, opened her hand, and emotionlessly watched the clear water stain drip.
She wiped her hands and walked forward expressionlessly. When her gaze fell on a tree, she couldn’t help but stop.
The thick sycamore tree was bare, its winding branches clearly visible, unable to block the falling snow.
The person standing under the tree was tall, her red trench coat outlining a slender waist, revealing a hint of aloofness amidst the swirling white snow.
She tilted her head slightly, extending one hand to catch the snowflakes drifting down with the wind.
A chilly breeze, carrying cold air, stirred her hair. She seemed oblivious, a gentle smile gracing her beautiful lips.
The romance of white snow on one’s head seemed to find its best interpretation on this person in red.
Ning Xuechu’s heart fluttered, a hint of awe flashing in her cold eyes.
She quickly walked over, a docile smile appearing on her flushed face. Adjusting her backpack, she said happily, “Sister, you didn’t have to come pick me up in such cold weather.”
“It’s alright, I happened to be free today,” An Jianqing turned, smiled gently, and flipped her wrist to let the snowflake fall.
Ning Xuechu’s gaze involuntarily followed the snowflake. Watching the white speck fall into the dirt and disappear, a sense of unspoken sadness rose in her heart.
Perhaps one day, she too would be ruthlessly abandoned, just like this snowflake.
“Xuechu, what’s wrong? Is something on your mind?” An Jianqing chuckled softly, asking in a low voice.
Ning Xuechu quickly shook her head, an innocent expression on her face, and curiously asked, “Sister, do you like snow?”
“Yes, I do. If I could walk in the snow with someone I love, even a moment of ‘white hair’ (aging together) would be a kind of happiness,” An Jianqing looked up, her lips curved slightly, her gaze filled with longing as she looked at the sky.
Ning Xuechu paused, a suffocating feeling rising in her chest.
From those cool eyes, she clearly saw the expectation and longing for love.
That phrase ‘someone I love’ was like a thorn, piercing her heart with a dull ache.
“Does Sister have an Omega she likes?” Ning Xuechu asked cautiously, suppressing the bitterness in her heart.
An Jianqing shook her head, the sadness in her eyes disappearing. She said with a smile, “Let’s go. Dinner should be ready soon.”
After saying this, she turned and walked towards the car.
Her slender, tall back, amidst the swirling white snow, was like an unreachable dream, difficult to touch.
Ning Xuechu’s eyes flickered. She brushed away the snowflakes on her eyelashes and strode to catch up.
When they walked side by side, she slowed down, revealing a happy smile. “Sister, if you ever meet an Omega you like, be sure to tell me. I will sincerely bless you both.”
An Jianqing, hearing this, a hint of sadness flashed in her bright eyes. She was silent for a moment, then shook her head. “I won’t like any Omega.”
A low, firm voice came through the swirling snowflakes, seemingly concealing endless helplessness.
Ning Xuechu frowned, and the discomfort in her heart intensified.
She got into the car, glanced at the person beside her, and softly said, “Sister.”
Hearing the earnest call, An Jianqing tilted her head, her clear eyes reflecting a figure getting closer and closer.
The atmosphere in the car inexplicably turned ambiguous.
An Jianqing’s heart tightened, and her body froze in place. Just as she was about to stop the person beside her from getting closer, the other person spoke first.
“Sister, you have a snowflake on your head.” Ning Xuechu looked up, a beautifully shaped snowflake resting on her fair fingertip.
She lightly rubbed her fingers, and the white snow turned to water.
“Thank you, I didn’t even notice,” An Jianqing smiled softly, started the car, and her stiff body returned to normal.
Ning Xuechu lowered her head, looking at the water droplets slowly dripping from her fingertips, a smile curving her lips. She suddenly said, “Sister, you smell so good. Many Omegas must love the scent of your pheromones, right?”
Hearing this, An Jianqing’s fingers gripping the steering wheel involuntarily tightened. She chuckled unnaturally and didn’t answer.
Ning Xuechu’s eyes showed more confusion. She tilted her head, her fair face showing a hint of nervousness, and whispered, “Sister, I’m sorry, I said something I shouldn’t have.”
“It’s nothing,” An Jianqing gently curved her lips, looking straight ahead.
Ning Xuechu’s confusion deepened.
Alpha pheromones had a natural attraction to Omegas, especially an S-class Alpha like An Jianqing. Her pheromones were a source of pride.
Other Alphas would intentionally or unintentionally release pheromones in front of Omegas to attract them.
But in front of her, An Jianqing had never released even a trace of pheromones.
Or perhaps, an S-class Alpha disdained an ordinary Omega like her.
Ning Xuechu’s mood instantly became irritated.
To make An Jianqing interested in her, she had to create more opportunities.
Dinner was already prepared, abundant and delicious.
Ning Xuechu, however, had no appetite. She ate a little and returned to her room to wash up.
Noticing her bad mood, An Jianqing hesitated to speak but ultimately did not offer comfort.
The snow outside fell heavier and heavier, already painting the ground white.
Ning Xuechu took a bath and stood on the balcony in her pajamas.
A cold gust of wind blew, and she couldn’t help but shiver, goosebumps appearing all over her body.
“Xuechu, don’t stand on the balcony. You’ll catch a cold,” a concerned female voice came from the adjacent window.
“Okay, Sister,” Ning Xuechu rubbed her hands, showing a cute smile, and obediently ran back to her room.
Sitting on the bed, she thought for a moment, then her gaze fell on the window again.
This amount of snow should be enough to build a mini snowman.
Ning Xuechu put on a sweater, slipped on cotton slippers, and opened the door to go out.
The snow outside was still falling endlessly, as if it would never tire.
Ning Xuechu squatted on the ground, breathing into her hands.
She scooped up a handful of snow, kneaded it into a ball in her palm, and then gradually added snow to the outer layer, following the ball’s shape.
She repeated this action over and over until the snowball in her hand was larger than her fist.
In just five minutes, Ning Xuechu’s palms were freezing cold. She couldn’t help but shake her hands, blowing a few breaths of warm air into her palms, trying to drive away the bone-chilling sensation.
But it didn’t seem to have much effect.
Ning Xuechu gritted her teeth, her downward-cast eyes showing a determined expression, and continued to form another ball.
The upper part of the snowman was smaller, so she shaped it faster.
Soon, both balls were ready. She stacked them together, forming the rudimentary shape of a snowman.
“Xuechu, it’s very cold outside. What are you doing squatting here?” A gentle voice came from the cold wind behind her.
Ning Xuechu was startled. She quickly hid the snowman in her arms, stood up, and nervously lowered her head, not daring to meet anyone’s gaze.
An Jianqing glanced doubtfully at the ground, noticing that the previously smooth snow had become uneven.
She immediately understood, chuckled softly, and said, “Xuechu, if you like snowmen, I can ask Aunt Lian and the others to build one for you. It’s so late, and you’re out here in a thin sweater; you’ll easily get sick.”
An Jianqing said, draping the coat she was holding over Ning Xuechu’s shoulders. She adjusted the sleeves and continued, “Don’t be so playful next time.”
Ning Xuechu immediately felt a wave of warmth and a pleasant scent envelop her. She blinked, then boldly looked up, taking out the snowman from her arms. She said cautiously, “Sister, this is… I want to give it to you… I haven’t made the snowman’s nose and eyes yet, but I hope you like it.”
Her words were disjointed, each word uttered in the cold wind, yet they felt unusually warm.
An Jianqing was startled, staring intently at the child’s flushed face.
After a moment, she smiled gently, reached out and took the snowman, her eyes filled with delight. “Thank you, Xuechu, I really like it. But next time, don’t disregard your health like this. If you get sick, Sister will worry.”
“My body is very good, I won’t get sick… Achoo!” Ning Xuechu became happy, as if she had received immense affirmation, but she sneezed before finishing her sentence.
“Come inside quickly,” An Jianqing said urgently, holding the snowman in one hand and Ning Xuechu’s hand in the other.
Ning Xuechu immediately felt a warm and soft sensation in her palm. Her eyes widened, and she had an urge to tightly grip the hand.
But in the end, she restrained herself, allowing the other person to lead her.
The snow continued to fall incessantly, landing on the eaves, on the branches, and also on them.
Ning Xuechu looked at the person in front of her, whose dark hair was now streaked with white. She curved her lips into a happy smile and said with an innocent expression, “Sister, it seems we’ve grown old together.”
An Jianqing, hearing this, turned back to meet a pair of dazzling eyes. She instinctively turned her head away, saying in a faint voice, “With this much snow, you really can’t sneak out alone again, especially dressed so lightly.”
“Understood, Sister,” Ning Xuechu smiled obediently, but her downcast eyes held a coldness.
Her attempts to test the waters had been deftly sidestepped by An Jianqing.
But it didn’t matter; she had plenty of time and patience.
