Chapter 14: The Wedding of the Desolate Village (12)
Clean
The room was cramped with a jumble of things, making the already small space feel suffocating. An ancient fan hung from the rafters, creaking “zhiya zhiya” as if it could fall at any moment.
No one had lived here for a long time, and the bedding wasn’t new, carrying a persistent damp smell.
Jiang Nan wasn’t sleepy, but the scent of the person next to her made her feel at ease. So she remained silent, letting the other person hold her hand and press her onto the bed.
“It’s clean here,” Luo Ning said to her with a gentle smile.
Not knowing if Jiang Nan had a cleanliness obsession, she still cared for her meticulously, like a child.
The air was filled with Luo Ning’s scent, and at some point, under Luo Ning’s gaze, Jiang Nan finally felt sleepy. She didn’t even remember how she got there or how she ended up lying next to her.
Her spot wasn’t damp or smelly as she had expected.
Luo Ning had laid out a new quilt where she was lying before, and where she brought Jiang Nan to lie down was a spot she had already warmed up, as if she had made the bed warm just for her.
When Jiang Nan realized this, she gave Luo Ning a complex look before turning her back to her. A faint blush crept onto her delicate, porcelain-like face.
Luo Ning didn’t seem to mind her actions, and she chuckled softly, her laugh like a clear stream, soothing to the heart.
Looking at the small back in front of her, Luo Ning’s spirits lifted for some reason, her soul seeming to dance with joy.
Her long, silvery hair made the person in front of her look like an otherworldly elf untouched by the mortal world. Her long fingers were restless, idly playing with a lock of Jiang Nan’s hair. She knew Jiang Nan wasn’t asleep, so she asked casually.
“Little Jiang Nan, what are you thinking about?”
Her voice was lazy, but every syllable she spoke sounded like a pleasant piano note.
An itch on her scalp brought Jiang Nan back to reality. Subconsciously, she wanted to move away from her, but she couldn’t bring herself to leave the faint, fresh jasmine scent on Luo Ning.
Jiang Nan seemed to remember something. After a moment of hesitation, she finally spoke, but without turning around.
“Do players save people in the game instances?”
“Hm?”
Hearing this, Luo Ning’s eyes narrowed slightly, and her hand paused. She seemed lost in thought, her gaze lingering on Jiang Nan’s back for a long time.
After a while, something flashed in the depths of her profound eyes, but it was gone in an instant. Jiang Nan, with her back turned, didn’t notice. Then, Luo Ning chuckled softly, a hint of playfulness in her voice.
“Do you mean the original inhabitants of the instance, those NPCs?”
Jiang Nan was silent for a moment before giving a barely audible “mm,” waiting for Luo Ning’s answer.
Luo Ning pretended to think for a while, then continued to play with Jiang Nan’s hair with a carefree attitude. Her voice was still laced with a smile and an ambiguous meaning, but the words she spoke suddenly made Jiang Nan tremble.
“It depends. After all, there are some soft-hearted players. Why do you ask? Aren’t you afraid I’ll suspect you’re an NPC?”
Although the last sentence was filled with laughter, it made Jiang Nan’s body stiffen. An alarm went off in her mind. Her expression, hidden from Luo Ning, changed. Her already pale lips became even whiter in an instant.
Jiang Nan pursed her lips and said nothing, nor did she admit it.
But Luo Ning was right. She was just feeling guilty, living a precarious life by pretending to be a player when she was an NPC from the instance.
Luo Ning let go of her hair, and seeing that Jiang Nan didn’t seem to want to talk to her anymore, she laughed.
“I’m just kidding. Are you angry?”
Luo Ning’s smile grew wider, and she couldn’t help but tease her.
Jiang Nan ignored her, but Luo Ning was already amused by her awkward actions. She sighed theatrically, then said unhurriedly, sounding a little regretful.
“As compensation, I’ll tell you one of my secrets.”
Hearing this, Jiang Nan’s eyes flickered. Although she didn’t move, she was extremely curious about what Luo Ning was going to say next.
Luo Ning spoke slowly, her voice flat, as if she were narrating an ordinary, insignificant matter.
“I can control any ghost. The one you saw under the sycamore tree last night was the headless ghost I had under my control, who is also the master of the illusion we entered.”
Hearing this, Jiang Nan seemed to grasp something from her words and asked in confusion.
“You said you were digging for her head, so why didn’t you find it later?”
She remembered that after they left the illusion, Luo Ning took her away from under the tree. But Luo Ning was definitely not the type to obediently return because of the rule that you couldn’t go out at night.
Luo Ning laughed, her gaze shifting to the window. A chilling pressure made it hard to breathe. Then she said calmly.
“Actually, I did find it, but when we entered the illusion, she ran away. She’s quite cunning.”
A cold chill appeared in her eyes after she finished speaking.
Daring to escape right under her nose, she’s really asking for a second death.
Jiang Nan didn’t understand, but the figure swaying outside the window was clearly visible. A powerful pressure surged, and a word, bloodthirsty and ruthless, exploded in the ghost’s mind.
“Scram.”
The ghost felt a little wronged, its newly sewn-on head swaying precariously. It actually felt it had no ill intentions.
It just wanted to see how the person who entered its illusion was doing.
“Are you stupid? Did the car crash really make you dumb? Those two are obviously not to be messed with.”
Especially that woman named Luo Ning. For some reason, she was protecting Jiang Nan like a mother hen, not even caring that her warmth was being met with coldness.
“Su Man” came out for a “stroll” and saw it standing outside the window of the two people. She immediately slapped the head in annoyance.
The head, which was already precariously attached to its neck, immediately fell off with the slap, rolled to the side, and then rolled back to her feet, its half-rotten face looking at “Su Man” with a wronged expression.
“I just wanted to see.”
“Su Man” rolled her eyes at it but kindly placed its head back on its neck, muttering.
“If you keep looking, aren’t you afraid of dying again?”
The head seemed to want to shake its head, but its movements were even more bizarre.
They were already dead; they didn’t know what pain felt like anymore.
“Do you think we can win against Nie Yun this time?” it said, then, as usual, pondered the possibility of this idea.
Hearing this, “Su Man,” who would usually remind it that the new bridesmaids and groomsmen were all on Nie Yun’s side, fell into a strange silence. After a while, she spoke with a hint of sarcasm.
“Who knows?”
Jiang Nan’s words gave her a glimmer of hope.
If Jiang Nan really intended to fulfill their wishes, she would surely stand against Nie Yun.
The sky here darkened quickly. The daytime felt like only a quarter of the usual, while the night took up three-quarters of the time.
So, when night fell, ghosts came out.
There weren’t many living people left here, and due to the rules, they, as ghosts, even if they didn’t want to kill, had to scare someone tonight.
Luo Ning and Jiang Nan were obviously off-limits. The unlucky person was naturally the isolated office worker next door.
A moment later…
A scream echoed throughout the village. Under the night sky, red silks fluttered in the wind, as if no one noticed the scream, and no one came out to watch the commotion. Only crows circled in the air, watching the farce.
The frantic “bang bang” on the door showed how terrified the person inside was, banging on the door haphazardly.
But the wooden door, which was dilapidated during the day, suddenly seemed to have turned into a fortress of copper and iron. No matter how much he banged on it, it was useless, and he couldn’t get out.
Thick, foul-smelling bl00d slowly pooled at his feet. The bloody, rotten, maggot-infested humanoid figure crawled toward him with a strange smile.
Under the scattered long hair, the pale face was so familiar that his body trembled uncontrollably.
It was that face, that face…
“Li Tao, you’ll come to hell with me.”
A cold hand climbed onto his shoulder, and a chilling laugh rang in his ear. The cold air made him shudder. The smell of bl00d filled his nose.
Despair shrouded his heart. He was too familiar with that face. He had been haunted by nightmares because of that face.
If he hadn’t been tormented to the point of a mental breakdown, why would he have wished to enter a game instance to escape the nightmares?
His body went limp on the ground, and he felt a sticky substance with his hand, but he didn’t care. He just mumbled to himself, trying to hypnotize himself.
“I didn’t do it on purpose. I didn’t push you down on purpose. It was you, it was you who was too outstanding, you stole the position that belonged to me…”
People are always envious, looking down on those below them and hating those above them.
So, driven by this jealousy, he pushed the woman who was more outstanding than him off a tall building.
He thought his career would soar from then on, but he became listless every day because of the nightmares, which made his boss increasingly dissatisfied.
…
“So noisy.”
Jiang Nan listened to the heart-wrenching screams from the opposite room, her brows slightly furrowed. Two words slowly left her lips, her tone full of disgust.
After listening to Li Tao’s self-incriminating monologue, she roughly understood the scoundrel’s character, and her frown deepened with a hint of impatience.
As soon as she finished speaking, her ears were suddenly covered by two hands. Warmth spread from her skin. She didn’t realize how intimate their position was at the moment.
“Just bear with it a little longer.”
The pampering comfort, a gentleness that could drown a person.
As expected, she still had a child’s temper, she hadn’t grown up yet.
With her back to Luo Ning, Jiang Nan didn’t see the murderous intent in the depths of her light purple eyes. The oppressive feeling she released was not directed at her in the slightest.
