Chapter 15: The Wedding of the Desolate Village (13)
You can try
Under the night sky, the late breeze was chilling, and the gusts of wind dispersed the stuffy heat of the day.
The remote village seemed to have been put on a timer, with all the lights turned off, returning to silence. Only crows circled, like dark shadows flailing their claws, searching for prey.
Jiang Nan was annoyed by the noise from across the way and embarrassed by Luo Ning’s actions, so she simply sat up. Predictably, her wrist was grabbed by that person again.
“Little Jiang Nan wants to go out? Have you forgotten that you can’t go out at night?”
Jiang Nan silently gave her a side-eye. On the first night, they had completely broken this rule. Was it not too late to mention it now?
Jiang Nan shook off the other’s hand, her gaze passing through the broken door to look at the room across the way. She spoke without a trace of emotion.
“The rules only say not to go out to the village, they don’t say you can’t leave the room to visit.”
Visiting a man’s room. Jiang Nan said it with a straight face.
After speaking, she ignored Luo Ning’s reaction, got up, stepped over the still-lying Luo Ning, and left the room again.
Luo Ning looked at Jiang Nan’s back and smiled, but made no move to stop her. She thought for a moment that she was also bored in this beginner’s instance, so she yawned, got up, and followed Jiang Nan out of the room.
The two stood in front of the door across the way, and Jiang Nan said coldly.
“Open the door.”
Luo Ning stopped her and said with a hint of reproach.
“That’s not polite.”
Jiang Nan: ?? Are you being polite?
Then Luo Ning put on a polite facade, her long fingers slightly bent, and knocked on the door across the way. After three “dong dong dong” sounds, she asked.
“Sir, has something happened in there?”
At this moment, a faint groan came from inside. If you listened carefully, it was a series of “I’m sorry” from a hoarse throat.
Luo Ning waited for a long time, as if she didn’t care about the situation inside. The gentle expression on her face slowly turned impatient, and she kicked the shaky wooden door open. The door, unable to bear the force, fell down.
The moment the door opened, a foul smell from the confined space rushed out. In just a second, Luo Ning frowned, her eyes filled with disgust.
Her beautiful, bony fingers were slightly bent, placed at her nose to block out some of the stench and disgusting smell.
“How did he urinate in the house?” she said, with a full tone of condemnation, as if she couldn’t see the scene inside the room.
A pale hand reached over, offering a clean handkerchief.
Luo Ning’s gaze followed the thin, white hand to its owner.
Jiang Nan also frowned at the smell, holding the handkerchief to her nose, but she turned her head, as if extremely unwilling to hand her the handkerchief.
“I took it from home,” Jiang Nan explained, as if afraid the other person would misunderstand where she got it from.
As for where “home” was, it was naturally her original instance world.
She kept a handkerchief with her to wipe away the bl00d when she was bullied.
Luo Ning looked at her awkward little mannerisms and couldn’t help but want to tease her.
She always acted on impulse, and in the end, she reached out and pinched Jiang Nan’s face, her tone full of mockery, like a scoundrel teasing a young girl.
“Little Jiang Nan knows how to care for people now.”
A slight pain came from her face, and Jiang Nan glared at her fiercely. Only then did the other person pull back her mischievous hand.
Jiang Nan spoke, her tone dropping to freezing point.
“Then don’t take it.”
She was about to pull back her hand, but her wrist was quickly caught by the other person, who took the handkerchief. The mockery in her eyes deepened, and her tone became even more annoying.
“Don’t be so sensitive, Little Jiang Nan.”
Saying that, she reached out and ruffled her hair. Only after she had had her fill did she step into the messy room with a satisfied look.
Jiang Nan hadn’t tied her hair up; it was loose. The other’s actions made it a bit messy. She was immediately furious, her tightly clenched fists turning a terrifying white, showing how much she was holding back from summoning her blade and cutting off the other person. In the end, reason won, and she entered the room, covering her nose.
Inside, an oil lamp had been knocked over, its flame flickering, providing just enough light to see the furnishings inside.
Jiang Nan’s footsteps paused. She felt something wasn’t quite right.
Li Tao no longer had his meticulous appearance. At this moment, he was in a disheveled state, his eyes rolled back, and he was foaming at the mouth. Even though his voice was already hoarse and rough, as if it had been run over by a car, he was still using this unpleasant voice to say “I’m sorry” over and over again.
He was like a believer abandoned by his god, still persistently begging for his god’s forgiveness.
“What did you do to scare him like this?”
Luo Ning looked around, feeling like she had no place to step, so she stopped, reached out to block Jiang Nan who was following her, and spoke.
Her words were not directed at Jiang Nan. And after Jiang Nan stopped, she also seemed to be waiting for an answer with the other person.
“Su Man” suddenly appeared out of thin air not far away, standing next to the瘫软 man.
Ever since she knew that Luo Ning could control them, Jiang Nan’s only reaction to “Su Man’s” reappearance was to glance up without any surprise. Then she went to look for other things.
“He saw the person he killed and scared himself,” “Su Man” answered, a look of disdain spreading in her eyes for the man who kept apologizing.
Luo Ning’s eyebrows raised slightly, and she accepted the explanation. How many good people could there be among those chosen by the “City of Desire” system?
Thinking of this, her gaze moved from the limp man on the ground to Jiang Nan not far away.
Jiang Nan was crouching in a corner at the moment, small and thin, looking like she was malnourished, which made people’s hearts ache.
Her shoulders were shrugging, as if she was fumbling for something.
“What are you looking for?”
Luo Ning walked over and only then saw that Jiang Nan was using a knife to pick up a piece of broken red cloth.
The red cloth was dusty, with burnt edges. The character “å–œ” (happiness/double happiness) was faintly visible on it.
Jiang Nan ignored Luo Ning, instead, she looked around the room, then frowned.
A dusty dressing table, a dirty, unrecognizable quilt, a red paper-cut on the headboard that was no longer readable, and a half-open closet filled with clothes and skirts chewed up by rats and insects.
“Where does Nie Yun live?” Jiang Nan glanced at “Su Man” and asked.
Then she intended to get up, but because her body was already weak and she had a bit of low bl00d sugar, she suddenly felt dizzy and her vision went black for a moment when she stood up.
Seeing this, Luo Ning naturally pulled her into her arms, but she frowned when she felt her thin body.
After stabilizing herself, Jiang Nan didn’t immediately break free from Luo Ning, instead, she continued to look at “Su Man.”
“Su Man” looked at Jiang Nan with a complicated expression and answered her question.
“Nie Yun used to live here.”
Hearing this, Jiang Nan’s brows furrowed slightly. She had guessed correctly. This was the bride’s former residence, and the place where Nie Yun was supposed to set off for her wedding.
Thinking of this, she pushed Luo Ning away without hesitation.
Where was Nie Yun now?
Luo Ning looked at her empty arms, then at Jiang Nan’s side profile lost in thought, and smiled, asking her.
“Are you going to go look for Nie Yun?”
Before Jiang Nan could answer, “Su Man” said with an agitated expression.
“No, do you want her to kill you?”
Only they knew how terrifying Nie Yun was in this village.
The rules had never been on their side.
What’s more, even if they were lucky enough to kill Nie Yun, how would this wedding proceed? They would never be able to leave, just like those people before, trapped in this village forever, following Nie Yun’s orders.
As Jiang Nan was thinking, she looked at “Su Man” and said calmly.
“You want to kill her.”
The calm tone was as if she was only stating a fact.
A flicker of complexity flashed in the depths of “Su Man’s” dark red eyes. Her clenched hands seemed to be holding back something. After a while, she said through gritted teeth.
“We want to kill her, but we don’t want innocent people to die for us. We’re already dirty and dead, it’s not worth it.”
The overwhelming curses from back then had long made them lose hope.
However, in the midst of her long and painful memory, a cold, clear voice pulled her out.
“Victim-blaming is nothing more than a fallacy that crushes your last straw of hope.”
Hearing this, “Su Man” slowly raised her eyes, the complexity in them even more pronounced. She only saw the person speak again, her voice still cold, but every word struck her heart.
“You are worth it, and she must die.” She was referring to Nie Yun.
Her indifferent expression made it hard to see the emotions inside, but even so, it made Nie Yun stare blankly and say.
“You can’t kill her.”
Luo Ning chuckled softly and said carelessly.
“You can try.”
Hearing Luo Ning’s words, Jiang Nan looked at her, but only saw a smile in her eyes, a helpless smile as if she were letting a child play.
Suddenly, “Su Man” looked at the two of them. The faint moonlight fell on their faces, and for a moment, she felt as if she was looking at lunatics. They could have left here if they had just killed them.
