She Was Sentenced to Life Imprisonment [Unlimited] - Chapter 26
Chapter 26: Beauty Porcelain (8)
It’s Not Good Here
Jiang Nan’s words brought a glimmer of hope to the other person’s eyes. She wanted to give more hints, but just like before, she couldn’t speak. She sighed and said thank you.
Her gaze fell on the dark night outside, revealing a hint of fear.
“It’s not good here. If you ever have a chance, please escape.”
Her words were so sincere that it was impossible to doubt them.
As an NPC, and possibly the dungeon boss, she was having a change of heart and advising someone to leave.
After Mother Ci finished speaking, something in the air seemed to fluctuate, like a warning for someone who had repeatedly disobeyed.
Jiang Nan couldn’t guess her purpose. After a moment, she refused.
“Sorry, but I’m here to find someone.”
The other person might have already figured out her identity, and at the risk of being discovered, was subtly trying to persuade her to leave.
She could abandon her quest and leave the ancient town, becoming an ordinary NPC outside, but she didn’t want a life of repetition.
She had always had a voice inside her that told her to find that person.
A thunderbolt streaked across the sky, its pale light shining through the half-open door for just an instant, as if urging something.
Mother Ci suddenly stood up and said calmly.
“I must go.”
She walked to the doorway but stopped.
“Help me find her, even if it’s just to let me see her.”
Thunder struck again, this time hitting the ground right in front of the door.
Mother Ci looked at the scorched earth, then hurried out into the rain. Her figure quickly disappeared, her back looking inexplicably lonely.
Jiang Nan watched her leave, her eyes narrowing slightly. She rubbed the hand the other person had touched, feeling that something wasn’t quite right.
After Mother Ci left, the candles in the room abruptly went out. The house, suddenly plunged into darkness, was filled with a chilling wind that burrowed into her skin, leaving a coldness that went to the bone.
Jiang Nan was afraid of the cold. After shivering, she finally understood why Luo Ning had left her the cape before leaving.
This was the first time she felt a little grateful to Luo Ning, but it was only for a second. In her mind, it was still best to avoid unknown people.
With nothing to do, she took out her blade and walked cautiously toward the extinguished candles.
The flame she had just lit lasted only a few seconds before going out again.
After a few more attempts, Jiang Nan simply tossed the candle aside. In the pitch-black darkness, she wandered around the room.
As she neared the display shelf, the blade in her hand trembled. It felt warm, as if it had found something good and was extremely excited.
Jiang Nan lowered her eyes. Since she couldn’t see the object in her hand, she gently placed her index finger on her lips and said softly.
“Quiet.”
But her knife was clearly disobedient. It became even more excited, almost slipping from her grasp.
She glanced to the side but couldn’t see anything. Knowing what it wanted, she hesitated for a moment and said to the blade.
“Don’t touch the lotus porcelain.”
After she said that, she waited for it to move again, as if promising her something. Only then did Jiang Nan feel at ease, fumbling to place the knife on the display shelf before feeling her way back to the chair.
The blade on the display shelf flashed with an eerie red light. An invisible force instantly enveloped the room, devouring the souls closest to it. The trembling porcelain pieces felt nothing but terror, and before they could react, they were all absorbed.
Hundreds of porcelain pieces, hundreds of souls. It ate with glee, but Jiang Nan watched it. Even though she couldn’t see it clearly, she could recognize its mood from the wretched screams around her.
The blade trembled, seemingly asking for her praise. Jiang Nan smiled, but when she lowered her eyes, a certain look flashed in them.
She remembered last night, when her body had suddenly gone out of her control.
If she wasn’t mistaken, this knife could control her, but it would only forcibly take control when she was using it.
Ten points…
The number of points marked on the dusty photo in the corner of the shop in the exchange area flashed through her mind.
Could a normal knife worth ten points really have this kind of effect?
But on the bright side, apart from being a bit greedy and willful, this knife actually listened to her.
Jiang Nan, who hadn’t slept for a day, could even find a pattern in the screams, so she started to feel drowsy again.
Suddenly, a thunderclap rang out. A flash of light passed by. The old door groaned in the wind. The drafty door couldn’t stop the cold wind from coming in. The person in the corner could only wrap herself up tightly, not letting the wind through.
Muffled thunder hid within the thick black clouds. The rolling thunder brought a faint light that weakly shone through the window and the crack in the door. The cold light landed on a white cloth floating in the air, swaying back and forth like a loose piece of hanging clothing.
“I… didn’t… lie…”
The intermittent words came from a throat that had been dry for who knows how long, accompanied by a strange “gurgling” sound. It was so blurry that it was impossible to hear what it was saying.
It repeated the words many times, numbly and mechanically, as if desperately trying to get justice for itself. But every time, if you didn’t listen carefully, you couldn’t tell if it was talking or just making a strange noise.
The blade had already finished devouring all the souls. It joyfully flew back to Jiang Nan’s hand, painstakingly squeezing itself back in, careful not to wake her up. It even kindly flashed a red light to warn the “thing” on the ceiling beam.
But the “thing” didn’t understand. It just continued to repeat its words.
The knife was enraged. It was about to fly up and stab the “thing,” but before it could, it felt the hand holding its hilt tighten, stopping its movement.
Seeing that Jiang Nan was awake, it rubbed her palm to show its affection.
Jiang Nan opened her eyes. Through the faint light, she could clearly see the large lump of cloth in front of her.
Her palm felt slightly itchy. She looked down, then tossed the knife upward.
The sharp blade sliced through the cloth. A tearing sound rang out, followed by a dull thud as a heavy object fell to the ground.
“Who?”
Jiang Nan walked up to the “thing” and said coldly.
In the dim room, she couldn’t make out the face covered by black hair. She could only vaguely tell that it was a person, or rather, a ghost.
But it was clear that this ghost was not of sound mind. It just mumbled a blurry sentence and couldn’t answer her question at all.
Jiang Nan confirmed that it wouldn’t attack her. She then crouched down and leaned in to hear what it was saying.
Its speech was very unclear. Its throat sounded as if it had been crushed, making an unpleasant noise.
After a long time, Jiang Nan finally made out what it was saying. She also realized that it was probably not a healthy person.
A mute. What could have forced her to desperately say these few blurry characters?
She frowned, and as she was thinking, the ghost seemed to be stimulated by something. It crawled like a madwoman to the display shelf, clinging to it and trying to stand up.
The wobbly display shelf, with hundreds of porcelain pieces on it, shook as if they were about to fall the next second.
Its movements suddenly stopped, as if it was afraid of toppling the shelf. But its gaze remained fixed on the porcelain piece in the most prominent spot. Its eyeballs, which were bulging from their sockets, seemed as if they were about to fall out at any second. The pale light shone on its face, which was twisted and purple-red from a lack of oxygen, making it even more horrifying.
Jiang Nan hadn’t expected the other person’s action. She was knocked to the ground and frowned in pain. A murderous look flashed in her eyes, and her hand tightened on the hilt of the knife.
After she observed it for a moment, she found that it seemed to only have a fondness for the lotus porcelain and wasn’t trying to attack her.
She hid the knife in her sleeve and walked silently to its side.
It had been standing there for a long time, and its gaze had never fallen on her.
“Do you want it?”
After a long while, Jiang Nan finally asked.
Hearing her voice, it didn’t seem to have understood. Jiang Nan waited for a long time. Just when she thought the other person was also deaf, it slowly turned its head.
The bones connecting its neck were broken. Its head turned, but its body didn’t move. In the silent night, the only sound was the “crunching” of bone friction, which made her scalp tingle.
“Do you want it?” Jiang Nan asked patiently again.
It seemed a little agitated, wanting to say something. Its cracked, pale lips opened and closed, but all it could let out was a blurry “gurgling” sound, not even a complete word.
Two streams of bloody tears flowed from its eyes, dripping down its cheeks to the ground. It was blaming itself for not being able to speak and holding up the other person.
Jiang Nan looked at the lotus porcelain and thought. She finally reached out and carefully took it down, handing it to the other person, reminding it.
“Don’t break it.” After all, this was something Mother Ci treasured.
Looking at the porcelain handed to it, it frantically shook its head, almost shaking its head off. It made “ee-ya” sounds with its mouth, then tore at its clean clothes to wipe the bloody tears from its face. Only then did it gratefully nod and take it.
It was not of sound mind, but it still instinctively tried to please others.
Jiang Nan’s eyes were deep. In the dim room, it was impossible to see what she was thinking.
Its body was very thin, as if it were just a layer of skin attached to a skeleton. Its skinny hands were yellow from a lack of nutrition. The pure white clothes it was wearing were probably the cleanest it had, but they didn’t fit. They hung loosely on its body, just like when it was hanging. If one didn’t look carefully, they couldn’t even tell that there was a person inside.
Jiang Nan tried to light the candle again. This time it went smoothly and didn’t go out. But the cold wind from the crack in the door still made the candlelight flicker.
With the help of the faint light, Jiang Nan turned back to look at it. It was just tightly hugging the porcelain, and it was extremely careful, afraid that it would break it.
It was mumbling something, repeating it in a trance.
Jiang Nan listened for a long time before she could make out what it was saying.
“Mine…”
But this was Mother Ci’s…
Jiang Nan walked over, holding up the candle, wanting to see its face more clearly. But its messy long hair only allowed her to see its muttering lips.
“Do you live here?” Jiang Nan asked.
If there were others living here, why hadn’t Mother Ci told her?
Or was Mother Ci hiding something? Or was it not convenient for her to speak?
Jiang Nan was more inclined to the latter, but the real answer could only come from it.
But after it got the lotus porcelain, it seemed to be deaf to everything. It couldn’t even see the person by its side. It could only mumble incomprehensible words, helpless and hollow.
