Chapter 33: Beauty Porcelain (15)
Report, I Want to Report
The wind howled past her ears, just as it once had. In a daze, her eyes met a pair of smiling, wild, and unrestrained eyes.
Night had fallen, and a cold rain was coming. The chill snapped her back to reality.
This wasn’t that person…
A flicker of disappointment passed through her eyes. Jiang Nan pushed the other person away, then, after a moment’s thought, spoke politely.
“Thank you.”
Luo Ning reached out and stroked the other person’s head. She pulled a normal umbrella from somewhere and shielded them from the falling raindrops.
“Where are you going, Little Jiang Nan?”
“The altar.”
Jiang Nan’s gaze went to the firelight rising in the distance. The deep part of her pale pupils reflected the lights of a thousand households.
“Did they get away?!”
The sound of shattering tiles woke the two sleepy people. They looked at the wide-open courtyard gate and saw only the back of Mother Ci, floating away like a female ghost.
Shi Hui and Yi Fei shivered. Yi Fei came to his senses and pushed the tall man beside him, his face grim.
“Go chase her.”
His hand touched a cold, hard surface. Yi Fei realized the other person was no longer human.
Although they hadn’t seen Jiang Nan and Luo Ning leave the gate, it was already dark. It was impossible for them to still be hiding in the courtyard.
The path to the altar wasn’t far. By the time Jiang Nan and Luo Ning arrived, the number of people below the altar had changed. A few more people had been added.
A hunched, old man-like porcelain person. Unlike the others, its entire body was black and shriveled, like a waxed corpse. Yet, it stood firmly at the front of the townspeople, appearing incredibly tall.
Beside the old man were a few more black, shriveled porcelain people. They were only human-shaped, and even under the firelight, their facial features were impossible to see.
“Are those the corpses from the Lin Manor?”
Jiang Nan frowned, remembering the corpses in the coffins she had seen when she first arrived at the manor. They looked just like this.
Jiang Nan hadn’t seen them on the first night. Their appearance today was not a good sign.
Luo Ning seemed to remember something and said.
“I forgot to tell you that those few people woke up the people in the manor.”
After being wiped out in a single night, their resentment wouldn’t be less than Mother Ci’s.
As they were talking, the porcelain people over there began to stir. The old man with the cane harshly knocked the ground a few times, and they all quieted down, eagerly waiting for the old man to speak.
The old man coughed. His voice, which hadn’t spoken for many years, sounded like a broken accordion, filled with a leaky, hoarse, and unpleasant noise.
“Today, I have gathered everyone here to witness the death of a thief.”
“Everyone knows that our town is a famous porcelain town. Our annual Beauty Porcelain is deeply loved by the nobles in the palace. And it’s a fact that my Lin family has been making the Beauty Porcelain for generations, which you all acknowledge.”
“Just yesterday, a thief appeared in our town. She stole the Beauty Porcelain that my Lin family spent a year making, and attempted to use it to replace my Lin family’s position. But thankfully, she was discovered in time.”
“When we went to demand it back, she had already hanged herself out of shame.”
The old man’s black, hollow eye sockets slowly scanned the townspeople. Its authority, without the need for anger, made all the townspeople believe him deeply. It spoke again.
“She angered the gods. We must burn her completely and offer her filthy soul to the gods for atonement.”
As soon as its words fell, the townspeople shouted angrily. In the chaotic noise, Jiang Nan could still hear the full sentence, “Burn her to death.”
The person being burned by the raging fire was only a false illusion, and the people below were completely hypocritical.
“Don’t let them catch us.”
Jiang Nan’s expression was cold. She unconsciously tightened her grip on the other person’s wrist.
“Okay.” Luo Ning didn’t mind her hand being squeezed painfully. She just responded with a faint smile.
Perhaps they heard their words, countless pairs of black, hollow eyes looked at them, staring intently.
“You’ve come to ruin the ritual!” The old man’s old and unpleasant voice suddenly became shrill and terrifying.
“The gods are supreme! Grab them!”
Receiving the old man’s order, the porcelain people rushed toward them like a pack of rabid dogs.
They were forced to retreat continuously. A touch of solemnity appeared on Jiang Nan’s indifferent face.
These porcelain people couldn’t be broken, as doing so would require them to compensate with their own bodies.
The rain was a misty curtain. At a fork in the road, the two of them looked at each other and instantly vanished.
Their actions were undoubtedly a provocation to the townspeople. Soon, the enraged townspeople split into two groups and chased after them. The sound of porcelain clashing was exceptionally noisy in the silent night.
The ancient town’s alleys were all the same, like a huge maze. The townspeople who couldn’t find them began to block off all the small roads.
On top of a high wall, a paper parasol and a crimson figure. It should have been the figure of a beautiful woman, but because of those slightly upturned, smiling eyes, she looked like a Yama-Raja leisurely coming from the abyss to claim souls. Her aura was not to be trifled with.
With Jiang Nan gone, Luo Ning naturally didn’t have to pretend anymore.
The porcelain people below surrounded the wall, and more and more gathered below this wall.
Luo Ning took off the hairpin from her hair bun. The tassel jingled twice and then disappeared. The hairpin also turned into a small knife, a knife that was exactly the same as the one in Jiang Nan’s hand.
Her slender hand played with the blade. Her eyes were slightly lowered, showing a lazy and casual demeanor. Her red lips silently muttered something, and she nonchalantly counted the heads below.
“Fifty-two.”
After confirming that no more people were coming, she finally smiled.
The short knife grew long. With a casual swing, a cold flash of light descended with a terrifying pressure. In an instant, the porcelain people’s heads and bodies were separated, and they shattered into pieces on the ground.
Luo Ning pouted. She stood on the wall and looked at the shattered porcelain below, finding it very uninteresting.
[You have been affected…]
The system’s voice didn’t finish. It was as if its power was forcibly cut off. Not even the static sound of an error was heard.
“You’d better shut up,” Luo Ning said.
As if she sensed something, Luo Ning’s gaze went to a spot. It was a small alley that wasn’t illuminated by the lanterns.
She didn’t look for long. She quickly jumped off the wall and also disappeared into the dark, deep alley.
After getting rid of the porcelain people, Jiang Nan returned to the altar, only to see a person walking out of the fake flames.
Shi Hui, based on what Yi Fei had eavesdropped on, had indeed found the ashes at the altar. But as soon as he came out, he saw the returning Jiang Nan. He immediately showed a stiff, eerie smile.
“I found you.”
Jiang Nan didn’t even look at him. She quickly vanished.
How could Shi Hui, who hated them to the bone, give up this opportunity? He shoved the bag of ashes into his arms and immediately followed behind Jiang Nan.
“Neither of you is getting away today!”
The only response he got was the cold wind howling on his face.
Because of his movements, the townspeople who were searching for her were all drawn to him.
The alley was dark and deep. She swayed and went deep into the end of the alley. No matter how hard others tried to see, they couldn’t see a single trace of her.
Shi Hui didn’t stop at the entrance of the alley. Perhaps the porcelain curse on him made him feel particularly confident. He rushed in without hesitation, wanting to catch Jiang Nan.
However, Shi Hui didn’t know that the person he wanted to stop was also waiting for him to walk into her trap.
Around the corner, a foot kicked out. The merciless force hit his abdomen directly. The sound of porcelain shattering in the darkness was even more chilling.
A slender hand held a sharp blade. A hint of the knife’s beautiful crimson handle was accidentally revealed between her fingers. The blade was held against the man’s cold neck.
The townspeople gradually surrounded the alley. They came with lanterns. The candlelight illuminated the woman’s face, making it clear that her eyes were cold. Her lips were tightly pursed, and her sickly pale face made her look even more unapproachable.
Shi Hui panicked for just a moment. He glanced at the crack in his abdomen and smiled grimly.
“We’re the same kind now. You can’t kill me.”
Jiang Nan scoffed. Her amber-like eyes deepened, seeming to take on an eerie dark red. Every expression, every smile, was uncannily similar to someone. She parted her lips, showing no fear.
“We can try.”
As her words fell, the blade went in half an inch. It seemed that one more step and his head would fall off.
He couldn’t feel pain after turning into porcelain, but Shi Hui still felt his head was about to fall off. He immediately panicked.
“No, you can’t kill me! Report! System, I want to report her for killing a player!”
But for some reason, this large man couldn’t break free from this small girl. He could only feel the blade on his neck slowly going in inch by inch in horror.
The townspeople, who had been moving forward, stopped in their tracks as if they had seen something terrifying. Their limbs were stiff, and their eyes were blank as they looked at Jiang Nan.
“Report! I want to report her!”
Shi Hui was still screaming and struggling relentlessly. The distant system’s voice echoed just before his head was about to come off.
[Player Shi Hui’s report has been received. Now investigating the reported facts.]
The system’s voice was like a lifeline for Shi Hui. He struggled even more fiercely, and this time, he unexpectedly broke free from her.
Shi Hui thought Jiang Nan was scared. But before he could be happy for a moment, he reached up and touched his neck. Only a layer of skin, which was as good as nothing, was connecting it. His stiff face couldn’t show horror.
He might not die from turning into porcelain, but he wouldn’t live until tomorrow morning.
Thinking this, he looked at the culprit. His anger made him lose his mind. He pointed at Jiang Nan and cursed.
“Even if I die today, you won’t get away!”
The dark red in her eyes faded. Jiang Nan’s eyes were still indifferent and languid. She looked at the hand pointing at her and the comical way he was holding his neck. She couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Hearing her laugh, Shi Hui’s anger was instantly ignited. Just as he was about to start cursing, a cold light flashed. A finger was cut off at the base of his fist. The falling finger made a crisp sound before shattering completely on the ground.
Seeing this, Shi Hui went crazy, yelling “Report!”
After he had been yelling for a long time, the system gave a response.
[Results have been found…]
It was like it was intentionally building suspense, not saying the next part.
But Jiang Nan wasn’t flustered in the slightest. She lowered her eyes and used a handkerchief to wipe the blade, as if she wasn’t interested in the result.
Shi Hui acted as if he had already won. He yelled excitedly about her joining him in death.
Jiang Nan seemed annoyed by the noise. She looked up at him and said calmly.
“I won’t join you in death.”
Her certain words stunned the man. He thought the other person was just making a final struggle, but the system’s next words seemed to be a harsh slap in the face.
[Report invalid. Reason: No such person exists.]
The cold, mechanical voice stunned Shi Hui. He looked up at the woman in front of him again. The smile on the corner of her lips was like a mockery of him.
He immediately fell to the ground, no longer caring about the countless cracks and large holes in his body.
“You’re a monster, just like that crazy woman. You’re a monster…”
Listening to his muttering, the gloom in Jiang Nan’s eyes didn’t fade with her smile. Like a lifeless devil, she said softly.
“You guessed right.”
The man’s horrified pupils reflected the person in front of him. The last of his mental defenses were shattered, and despair spread throughout his body.
Surviving with a monster, how could he live?
[You have lost the will to survive, violating the first law of the City of Desires. I will now punish you.]
The system’s warning echoed in the man’s mind, but it couldn’t bring back a single shred of his will to survive.
Horror was replaced by a numb stupor. The cracks on the man’s body were slowly repaired by something. His appearance was now completely like those of the townspeople.
[Player Shi Hui has violated the first law and is now declared dead.]
The system’s announcement echoed throughout the entire ancient town. Accompanied by the pitter-patter of raindrops, it entered the ears of the other players.
Shi Hui’s stiff body stood up with difficulty. He walked past the townspeople who were crowded at the alley entrance, leading them away from the alley.
Jiang Nan picked up the bag of things that had fallen from Shi Hui. As soon as she held it in her hand, a figure flashed past her eyes.
