She Was Sentenced to Life Imprisonment [Unlimited] - Chapter 40
Chapter 40: The Rose Manor (5)
I Don’t Like Villains
After Yang Yi found out someone was eavesdropping, she immediately gave chase. But the person quickly went up to the second floor, which Henriette had warned them about, probably counting on them not daring to follow.
Before she could even make out who it was, the figure disappeared from the dim stairwell. The twisting roses on the staircase covered the only entrance, making it impossible for them to see anything.
“Yang Yi, don’t follow.”
Yan Xin came over and said coldly. She looked up at the rose-covered staircase to the second floor. Despite the unknown danger, she didn’t want Yang Yi to be in harm’s way because of this.
Yang Yi was about to say something when a person came screaming out into the hallway, followed by another.
Yan Xin found the screaming a little grating. After seeing who it was, a hint of disdain and mockery flashed in her eyes. She slightly stuck her foot out, seemingly by accident, and tripped the person who was coming toward them.
Jin Hao felt like he had been nothing but unlucky since entering this dungeon. The way he fell was incredibly disheveled. Not to mention, the things wrapped around his legs were almost killing him from the pain. The bl00d loss made his face turn pale as he shrieked.
Chen Lei, who was following behind, stopped in time so he wasn’t tripped.
Chen Lei looked behind him. Seeing that the two people weren’t following, he was a little relieved.
He glanced at Yan Xin and Yang Yi, wondering why the two of them were together. But the person lying on the ground, Jin Hao, was screaming so loudly that it finally brought his attention back.
Chen Lei looked at the person who was rolling around in pain on the ground. A calculating look flashed in his eyes. He immediately went to help Jin Hao pull the things off his legs with a look of concern. He then turned to the two women and “kindly” warned them.
“Two crazy women are trying to kill us! You guys should run!”
However, Yan Xin and Yang Yi looked at each other and had no intention of leaving. Instead, they mocked them.
“Two thieves are afraid of being killed?”
Yang Yi smiled and said.
“They’re already so miserable. You shouldn’t provoke them anymore.”
She thought for a moment, then spoke again, kindly reminding them.
“These are roses. If they’re damaged, Henriette will get angry, and who knows what the punishment will be.”
They had naturally seen Chen Lei and Jin Hao sneak to Luo Ning’s door. It was obvious they had gone to steal the map. As for why they ended up like this, it could only be said that they brought it on themselves.
Hearing that, Chen Lei stopped what he was doing and didn’t dare to touch the flowers anymore. He looked at the roses twisting around Jin Hao’s legs with fear.
His hand, which had been pricked by the thorns, was covered in bl00d, but most of the bl00d was from the person on the ground, Jin Hao.
Chen Lei looked up. His eyes, which had been mocked, showed a sinister look. He dropped the act and his ambition was revealed.
“You guys shouldn’t pretend to be so noble! Who doesn’t want to get the map?! I’m telling you now, the map is in that sick woman’s hands! They’re in cahoots! High-level players can kill us as easily as squishing an ant! We might as well cooperate and we’ll have a chance to clear the dungeon.”
As he spoke, his voice involuntarily carried a hint of confidence. He no longer cared about the person on the ground who was screaming and twisting.
Yan Xin frowned and thought for a moment, then smirked. Seeing this, Chen Lei thought she was going to agree. But before he could get happy, he heard her speak, her tone still mocking.
“I don’t like to cooperate with villains.”
With that, she looked at Yang Yi, who also mercilessly refused Chen Lei’s request.
“Do you really think we’re idiots too?”
Luo Ning and Jiang Nan were clearly not to be trifled with. Even when Henriette told Jiang Nan that she would come to see her, she didn’t show any panic or even concern. The fact that Luo Ning was able to get that map was not a coincidence. It was enough to prove that they shouldn’t have even been in this dungeon in the first place.
Since there were powerful people here, why would they offend them for the sake of two villains?
They weren’t as dumb as that brainless, nouveau-riche second-generation heir.
After being rejected one after another, Chen Lei’s pride felt as if it was being trampled on by everyone. His already ordinary face became twisted and hideous.
“What are you still doing?! I’m dying from the pain, can’t you see?! Find a way to get these things off me!” Jin Hao on the ground was gasping in pain and cursing.
Chen Lei had already tried. He couldn’t get the things off the other person’s leg. In fact, the more he tried, the tighter they got. Even his hand was pricked by the thorns.
“You can’t get these off.”
Chen Lei said with a dark face. Even if there were things nearby that could cut the roses, he didn’t dare to move them because of Yang Yi’s words.
Jin Hao was still cursing, but the next moment, the things on his leg suddenly tightened. A sharp pain came, and his body began to tremble uncontrollably. His screams echoed throughout the castle. The roses that were quietly wrapped around everything, as if alive, began to excitedly squirm in a dense mass. The humans on the ground were like insignificant ants in the eyes of the roses covering the castle.
Warm bl00d splattered the next second. Chunks of bloody flesh were twisted and torn off with the sound of bones breaking. The flesh on his legs was torn into small pieces and fell to the ground. The jagged wounds were shocking to the eye.
A large amount of bl00d stained the ground. The people watched the sudden scene in shock. The person on the ground had already fainted from the pain.
The roses climbing on the man were stained with bl00d, looking vibrant and eerie. They squirmed away from the man, but they were still absorbing the bl00d on the ground.
“What’s going on?” Yan Xin said with a dark face, asking Yang Yi next to her in a low voice.
Yang Yi had also just come to her senses. She shook her head, her expression becoming serious. She glanced at the squirming roses that had smelled the bl00d and calmly analyzed.
“They won’t hurt people for no reason. He must have done something to anger them. As long as we don’t touch them, we should be fine.”
Yan Xin nodded solemnly and pulled Yang Yi a few steps away.
If they were to randomly wrap themselves around people, they wouldn’t be able to escape either.
Hearing their words, a fierce look flashed in Chen Lei’s eyes. His gaze fell on the open door at the end of the hallway.
Only he knew that the moment they entered Luo Ning’s room, these roses had been pulled down and thrown on the ground. But why didn’t the roses dare to move on Luo Ning?
Before he could figure out the reason, a few people dressed as servants came out from somewhere. They looked at the mess on the ground and said.
“Miss Henriette doesn’t like bl00d. She will get angry. Clean this up quickly.”
After saying that, someone directed them to numbly clean up the broken bones and scattered flesh on the ground.
After absorbing the bl00d on the ground, the few roses that had wrapped around Jin Hao’s leg were now plump and their stems were thick. They slowly crawled away and merged back into the roses on the wall, becoming one with them.
The man who had lost a lot of bl00d lay half-dead on the ground. He was missing a leg. The jagged cut revealed the white bones inside his flesh, making him look pitiful and disheveled. He was breathing so faintly that it seemed like he would die at any second.
When Jiang Nan walked out, she only gave them a brief glance. In her hand was the map that Chen Lei had mentioned. The look in their eyes changed.
Luo Ning followed behind Jiang Nan and greeted them with a smile.
“Are you all going to feed the birds too?”
What birds could be here? Only those red vultures. And those vultures looked like they only ate corpses.
When Luo Ning said she was going to feed the birds, they all thought she was crazy. They looked at them with strange expressions.
Jiang Nan ignored their expressions. She calmly walked past them with the map they wanted and left through the main door. Luo Ning quickly followed behind her. Only then did they see that the two of them were each holding an iron shovel that they had found from who knows where.
The others: …
They silently watched the backs of the two crazy people leaving, watching them take shovels to “feed the birds.”
Yan Xin and Yang Yi looked at each other, exchanged a few words in a low voice, and then followed them out.
Chen Lei hesitated for a moment. He looked at the unconscious person on the ground. He seemed to have thought of something, and his face didn’t look so good. In the end, he also followed them out.
The roses in the manor had eaten some kind of fertilizer, they were over half a person tall. The various small paths left for watering wound through them, making it easy to get lost.
The map from Coralee didn’t just show the huge flower field, but also the village outside. But it was probably also part of this manor.
The place Luo Ning had pointed to on the map was not a strange place, but where the scumbag who was killed by Coralee was buried this morning. Jiang Nan had also seen it, which was why she agreed to dig it up.
The body wasn’t buried deep, and the two of them quickly dug it out. The people hiding in the distance watched them, thinking they were going to dig it up and whip the corpse because they held a grudge against the scumbag.
The night sky was dotted with a few stars, not enough to light up the night. Using that faint light, the blooming flowers swayed in the wind, creating waves of red. The rustling sounds were especially eerie in the quiet night.
The faint light made it impossible for the onlookers to see the two figures clearly. They could only see them standing in front of the hole they had dug, looking at who knows what. It was terrifying.
The secretly-following Yan Xin and Yang Yi were far away, using the unnaturally tall roses to hide themselves. They watched the two people from there.
But they didn’t see that the corpse they had dug up was already shriveled and dried from having all of its bl00d sucked out. There was only a layer of skin wrapped around its bones, looking wrinkled as if it had aged by decades.
A sharp, excited bird cry came. A few red vultures, having smelled the scent, swooped down and pecked at the skin and flesh with their sharp beaks right in front of the two people.
This place was not far from a red ‘X’ on the map. They took the opportunity to dig up that place as well, revealing an old corpse that was just bones.
Jiang Nan used the shovel to pull the clothes off the body that was only bones. Using the dim light, she could vaguely make out the gold thread embroidered on the clothes.
After Jiang Nan took the clothes, they didn’t expect the birds to even eat the bones. They immediately came over and gnawed on them, making a sound of bones cracking. One of them even hopped to her feet with a fierce look in its eyes.
Jiang Nan frowned at the vulture at her feet. She kicked it away and said.
“Why are you like a starving ghost?”
Logically speaking, they should be Henriette and Coralee’s pets in the manor. But why would a master not feed her pets enough?
Henriette clearly didn’t care about these vultures as much as she did about the flower field. Judging from the shriveled scumbag, the roses in the flower field loved bl00d. So in order to nourish the flower field, Henriette wouldn’t find other corpses to feed the vultures.
Jiang Nan remembered Coralee’s attitude toward the vultures today. Now that she thought about it, she was annoyed and impatient. But they had all thought she was like that toward the scumbag. Now it seemed that wasn’t the case.
In the darkness, for some reason, when Jiang Nan looked at them, who were eating greedily, she felt for a moment that they were human. If it weren’t for the feathers on their bodies, she would have really thought she was mistaken.
Luo Ning held the clothes that Jiang Nan had taken with one hand. When she heard Jiang Nan’s words, she glanced at the birds. No one noticed that when she looked at them, the birds trembled, as if in fear of something.
“So we came here to kindly feed them.” Luo Ning said with a slight laugh. She then looked at the clothes in her hand.
“It’s a little dirty. Little Jiang Nan, you shouldn’t touch it.”
Jiang Nan, who was about to take it to examine it closely, pulled her hand back. She looked at the clothes and said calmly.
“These shouldn’t be the clothes of a servant.”
Luo Ning agreed with a nod. She was uncharacteristically serious.
“An outsider’s.”
Judging by the style and material, the owner should be wealthy and of high status, not someone a servant would be.
In the manor, besides Henriette and Coralee, there were only the servants who were responsible for cleaning up the corpses. So this person wasn’t from the manor, but from outside.
Jiang Nan remembered the name on the map. The name seemed to be a man. So why did he know where the other corpses were? And he had marked them with a red ‘X’. He had come to the manor, but had he successfully entered?
She still didn’t know any of this. She looked up, past the large flower field, toward the area outside the manor.
The clothes had a rotten smell. Luo Ning was a little disgusted and threw the clothes to the side. She followed Jiang Nan’s gaze. A smile was on her lips.
“Little Jiang Nan, do you want to go out?”
Hearing that, the person in her peripheral vision had a relaxed expression, full of a lazy boredom, as if she wasn’t worried about clearing the dungeon at all. She was just excited to play with her.
The strong floral fragrance was mixed with the faint scent of the person next to her, which was so similar to that person that it unconsciously attracted her.
Jiang Nan lowered her eyes and said softly.
“Luo Ning, do you know you have a smell on you?”
Hearing that, Luo Ning was uncharacteristically stunned for a moment. She frowned and seriously sniffed herself. She then laughed.
“I don’t.”
Jiang Nan looked at her serious face and for some reason, wanted to laugh. She subconsciously leaned in and took a light sniff of the other person’s scent, only to feel a little less annoyed. She didn’t realize how intimate they were at that moment. She thought for a moment and said.
“A stinky smell.”
Luo Ning thought Jiang Nan was saying that she had a smell on her because she had held the smelly clothes.
“Then I’ll go wash when we get back.”
Luo Ning didn’t truly understand the meaning behind Jiang Nan’s words. She only understood the surface-level meaning, and didn’t realize Jiang Nan was just teasing her.
Hearing her serious response, Jiang Nan couldn’t help but laugh.
Luo Ning looked at the person’s smiling face. Her eyes were as bright as the stars. She said.
“Little Jiang Nan, I told you your smile is beautiful.”
The sound of the vultures constantly gnawing on the bones was chilling, but it didn’t affect them at all.
The people hiding in the distance looked at them, confused.
“Are they really here to feed the birds? Why does it look like they’re just chatting?”
Chatting next to a corpse. They must have something wrong with their brains.
