She Was Sentenced to Life Imprisonment [Unlimited] - Chapter 44
Chapter 44: The Rose Manor (9)
She’s Allergic to Pollen
“Are you here to find flowers too?”
Lin Jia saw Jiang Nan standing at the edge of the flower field. The bright sun gave her slightly pale skin an extra glow. She stood there quietly, her eyes cast down, as if she was admiring the flowers in front of her. Yet, with the flowers as a backdrop, she was so beautiful that she seemed otherworldly.
Jiang Nan looked up when she heard the voice. She tilted her head to look at Lin Jia and frowned. She was just about to say no when she was interrupted.
A sharp bird cry pierced the sky. A bloody figure suddenly swooped down, its sharp beak like a pointy awl, aimed directly at them.
Jiang Nan’s eyes turned cold. A captivating, deep crimson color spread through them. An irresistible sense of pressure suddenly descended from her body. The entire flower field seemed to be bowed down by her aura. The blooming flowers gathered into buds to protect themselves.
The cold flash of a blade swept by, and a cloud of bl00d mist exploded in the air. But it didn’t touch her dress in the slightest. She still stood quietly in that spot.
The sudden scene dumbfounded Lin Jia. After she came back to her senses, she saw the long knife in Jiang Nan’s hand. Something seemed to flash in her eyes.
After Jiang Nan put away her knife, she walked to the vulture that was lying on the ground, twitching in its own bl00d. As expected, just before it died, an egg carrying a ghost was laid.
But perhaps because it wasn’t broken this time, nothing appeared, unlike the noble ghost from before.
Lin Jia let out a sound of surprise. She greeted Su Yue, who had come out with her, and then squatted on the ground to observe for a moment before saying in astonishment.
“Did the bird world evolve this much? Male birds can lay eggs now?!”
As she said that, she was about to reach out to touch it, but Jiang Nan stopped her.
“It’s best not to touch it…”
She then thought for a moment and gave a seemingly reasonable explanation.
“There’s something dirty inside.”
Hearing this, although Lin Jia was still very excited, she at least controlled her hands and didn’t touch it.
Su Yue wasn’t far away. When she heard Lin Jia’s greeting, she walked over. After seeing the thing on the ground, she frowned and said.
“What’s wrong?”
Lin Jia stood up. She excitedly pointed at the birds circling overhead, which looked like a huge red net.
“We were just standing here, and they suddenly rushed at us. If it weren’t for her quick reflexes, I would have died in a foreign land.”
She said it with a lot of grievance, and paired with her face, it made people feel sorry for her.
In fact, these birds wouldn’t have gone after Lin Jia. Their target was probably only Jiang Nan, since she still had Henriette’s scent on her.
Su Yue kicked the bird corpse on the ground. After thinking for a moment, she said.
“They’re probably hungry.”
Lin Jia was a little angry and said, “That’s no reason to eat people.”
As she said that, she remembered something and said to Jiang Nan with a hint of envy.
“By the way, that knife you just used was so powerful. Did you buy it from the exchange area?”
Her eyes were bright, as if she was genuinely just curious.
Jiang Nan frowned and looked at the other person calmly.
She was already very sensitive. How could she not see Lin Jia’s intentions and her act? But in the end, she only gave an ambiguous answer.
“Someone gave it to me.”
Lin Jia let out a small “oh.” She then didn’t ask any more questions to avoid arousing suspicion and said with a smile.
“That person must think a lot of you.”
To give away such a treasure, they must value her greatly.
Before Jiang Nan could answer, she heard a horse’s whinny. Then a shadow was cast over her, and a familiar, sweet fragrance wafted over.
A person was sitting on a tall horse. Her figure was tall. She had her back to the light and was reaching out to her. Her face wasn’t clear, but Jiang Nan could still feel the other person’s bright and unrestrained personality.
“Come on. I’ll take you out for a ride.”
She said it so casually, as if she were just here to sightsee.
Jiang Nan didn’t reach out for the other person’s hand right away to get on. She looked at the other person in silence for a while.
Because the manor was huge, based on the map from before, the nearest village would take at least half an hour or an hour to walk to. There were no cars here, of course, so Luo Ning had suggested borrowing something from Coralee.
But she remembered that Luo Ning had said they would borrow a carriage from Coralee, not just a horse.
As if she had seen Jiang Nan’s confusion, Luo Ning gave a reasonable explanation.
“There were no carriages. I thought this would be faster.”
Jiang Nan still looked at her in silence, deeply suspicious of the other person’s horsemanship.
No matter how strong Luo Ning was, she couldn’t be good at everything.
“I’ll walk.”
Lin Jia let out a giggle next to her. She leaned close to Jiang Nan’s ear and quietly asked a question that Jiang Nan couldn’t answer.
“Do you like her?”
When Jiang Nan heard that, she was instantly stunned. She didn’t even know how she ended up on Luo Ning’s horse.
They were very close. The warmth of her body came through the fabric, which made her blush without her noticing.
“What did you just say? Your face is a little red?”
Luo Ning’s voice was as pleasant as a piano melody, but perhaps the wind was too strong, and it took Jiang Nan a long time to make it out.
Lin Jia’s words echoed in her ears. Her heart was racing again.
If it were their first meeting, Jiang Nan could have answered “no” without hesitation. But after Luo Ning had been with her for so long, she couldn’t give herself a satisfactory answer.
“Nothing. She said you’re shameless.”
Jiang Nan was afraid that the other person would wait for too long and reach out to touch her forehead, so she just made up a random answer.
A normal person would have heard that she was just making up a lie. But for some reason, Luo Ning behind her let out a soft laugh. Her eyes were deep as she spoke.
“How does little Jiang Nan know that I’ve lost my face?”
Her calm statement was like she was talking about a normal thing, but it was impossible for anyone to understand.
Jiang Nan was the best at sensing other people’s emotions. Moreover, Luo Ning usually smiled. Her expression now suddenly reminded her of the emotionless other person from before.
“What’s wrong?” Jiang Nan slightly frowned and asked in confusion.
Luo Ning didn’t answer her. The smile on her face was still there, as if nothing had happened.
When Jiang Nan saw that the other person wasn’t speaking, she looked at the bird that had a rope tied to its foot.
That was the bird that Jiang Nan had stabbed to death last night. It still had a bloody hole on its body.
The noble ghost who had called himself the Earl’s only son had been put back into the bird corpse by Luo Ning using some unknown method, bringing it “back to life.”
The thing that Luo Ning said would lead the way was this thing.
Jiang Nan watched the bird struggling to fly for a while. It was as if they were walking a dog. For the first time, she felt that Luo Ning was a bully. She also felt that they were too quiet, so she changed the topic.
“Why can you ride a horse?”
Only after experiencing it up close did Jiang Nan stop doubting Luo Ning’s horsemanship. She could even feel that the other person had learned it too well.
Luo Ning thought for a moment and said with a smile.
“Hmm, I only took one look at this thing in a certain dungeon.”
Jiang Nan couldn’t tell how much of the other person’s words were exaggerated. But even if the other person was exaggerating, she couldn’t question her ability to learn and imitate.
It was just like when she was making porcelain figurines. She had only seen two people make a complete one, but she was already able to make one herself the next time.
Luo Ning was being considerate of Jiang Nan and wasn’t riding very fast. They chatted casually. Jiang Nan quickly found that Luo Ning’s knowledge was very random. It was as if she had just skimmed and learned everything.
This made Jiang Nan even more suspicious of Luo Ning. She remembered that the other person had said more than once that she wasn’t a human. At that time, she had only thought the other person was joking. But now, she had to reconsider whether the other person was joking.
Before Jiang Nan could figure out these questions, they had already entered the nearest village.
The flower farmers in the village looked at the uninvited guests. They then noticed that they had come from the castle and immediately crowded around them enthusiastically and asked.
“Are you here to collect flowers? Miss Henriette hasn’t sent anyone in a long time.”
Luo Ning helped Jiang Nan get off the horse. She heard the flower farmers’ chatter and caught a few things.
Henriette would send people to collect flowers regularly. Looking at Henriette’s appearance, it should be because she couldn’t bear to destroy her own flower field.
Luo Ning smiled harmlessly and asked.
“Do you have anything to eat? We came in a hurry and haven’t had breakfast yet.”
A hint of astonishment flashed in Jiang Nan’s eyes. It turned out that the other person was planning to ask directly for food.
The flower farmers were stunned for a moment, but that didn’t affect their enthusiasm at all. They said.
“Yes, we do. If you don’t mind, come with us.”
Luo Ning politely nodded. She took Jiang Nan’s hand and said.
“Thank you.”
Jiang Nan frowned and awkwardly tried to shake the other person’s hand away. She said in a low voice.
“I’m not hungry.”
Luo Ning, however, thought about it seriously and said.
“Someone told me before that people get hungry. Besides, you don’t look healthy at all.”
Jiang Nan: …
She wasn’t a healthy person to begin with. Although she had gotten much better because of Henriette’s roses, she still looked like a sickly person from her appearance.
Jiang Nan was sullenly dragged by Luo Ning to a flower farmer’s house to get a free meal. She ate while staring resentfully at Luo Ning.
Luo Ning seemed to not have felt her gaze. She was still smiling as she watched her.
Jiang Nan already knew that this person probably didn’t feel hungry and wouldn’t eat anything. The way she was looking at her eating was like she was curious about something.
She thought for a moment and turned to look at the busy flower farmers and asked.
“Is Miss Henriette very good to you?”
In a manor like this, most manor owners would exploit their serfs. But when they came, they saw the expressions on these people’s faces, and it didn’t seem like they disliked Henriette.
“Miss Henriette is a very good person.” The flower farmer praised her without reservation.
When they talked about Henriette, the flower farmers’ faces had a hint of pride.
“After Miss Henriette took over the manor, she often helped us. We only need to help her plant and grow roses, and we can get a generous reward. She is very gentle. Every time she inspects the manor, she doesn’t beat and scold lowly people like us like other manor owners…”
“Does she like roses very much?” Jiang Nan heard about roses again. She put down the things in her hands and asked.
Although Henriette grew roses for the perfume she liked, she looked like the roses in the manor had a special meaning to her.
The flower farmer shook his head at this time and said.
“Miss Henriette is allergic to pollen. Every time we see her, she wears a thick scarf. We felt so bad for her and went over to ask her out of sympathy.”
“But Miss Henriette said that these are gifts for someone she loves.”
“We’ve never seen a young lady as devoted as Miss Henriette. We are also very supportive of her and happy for her.” The flower farmer’s words were filled with envy for Henriette’s deep love.
Hearing that, Jiang Nan’s movements paused. She looked through the window at the roses that surrounded the entire castle, which looked like they were in a pool of bl00d.
Henriette was allergic to pollen. This was something they hadn’t expected.
