She Was Sentenced to Life Imprisonment [Unlimited] - Chapter 58
Chapter 58: Communication Area 2
◎I Need Your Trust◎
After Jiang Nan was taken away, she followed the enforcer into a black hole that suddenly appeared. The enforcers stood to Jiang Nan’s left and right, their tall figures casting a shadow, as if they were escorting a prisoner.
Bai Lai frowned, watching Jiang Nan’s figure disappear into the black hole. The pressure brought by the enforcers also vanished instantly.
The sudden appearance of the enforcers and their taking of Jiang Nan caused the players who were still in the rest area to start discussing.
“What did she do?”
“The enforcers came out. She must have seriously violated the rules of the City of Desire…”
“She’s finished then. Weren’t a few people arrested before? I heard they were from the same instance. How serious could this offense be?” someone clicked their tongue.
“A joke. Years ago, I was lucky enough to see an enforcer. The person they arrested wasn’t released, and now they’re number one on the leaderboard.”
As they spoke, their gazes involuntarily turned to the leaderboard in mid-air. The person at the very top was like a taboo, and no one knew anything about them.
“Shut up!” Bai Lai said, a little annoyed.
The points on the leaderboard started to be recalculated. There was a subtle change in the top ten. The tenth place had a new person, and the words “Bai Lai” appeared on it.
The people around her fell silent, but those farther away still grumbled a few complaints.
Seated in the rest area, waiting for Yan Yan to choose a dress, Song Yun’s sharp eyebrows carried an aura that told people to keep away. She coldly looked at the place where Jiang Nan was taken.
Yan Yan raised her eyebrow, then lowered her eyes to gesture with the clothes in her hand, asking her.
“What do you think? Can you find out what she and those other people did wrong?”
Song Yun’s long legs were crossed, and she exuded a powerful presence as she looked at the translucent screen in front of her.
The query results only showed six words: “Intentional instance destruction,” with a list of five names below. Jiang Nan’s name was at the top, marked in a vivid red, indicating she was an extremely dangerous person.
Song Yun’s eyebrows furrowed slightly as she stared at the names for a moment. Her gaze finally rested on Jiang Nan’s. She sneered and looked at the bustling players outside, saying.
“It says she destroyed the instance.”
“The same as that person?” Yan Yan put down the clothes in her hand and asked.
In their minds, a figure suddenly flashed by—mysterious, yet terrifyingly powerful.
“Yes,” Song Yun said after a moment of silence, her deep gaze looking at the person in the top spot on the leaderboard.
Yan Yan sat down next to Song Yun. A flash of something unreadable passed through her eyes, and when she spoke, there was a hint of excitement.
“Do we need a delay?”
A flicker of something hidden passed through Song Yun’s profound eyes. After she nodded, Yan Yan wrapped her arms around her arm and said.
“I’ll request it from the system now.”
Jiang Nan was pushed into the black hole. The moment her foot entered the darkness, the passage behind her closed. Looking down, she saw thousands of floating light particles, as brilliant as stars in the universe.
“Who else came in? That sickly person?” someone in one of the five separate compartments asked, gloating.
Yang Yi smiled apologetically and said, “Don’t mind her. She’s always like that.”
“I knew it. With all of us arrested, she had to come in sooner or later.” Lin Jia leaned her hand on the table, her eyes curving into a smile, also with a hint of schadenfreude.
Su Yue adjusted her glasses and nodded slightly in greeting.
Jiang Nan ignored their scrutinizing gazes. She scanned the few compartments and saw that they were all the players who had survived “Rose Manor.”
But she didn’t see Luo Ning’s figure. When the enforcer urged her to go over, she spoke coldly.
“One is missing.”
The data flowing under the enforcer’s black hood suddenly flickered for a moment, and then it spoke.
“No one is missing. The main god only showed us all of you.”
Jiang Nan frowned, looking at the enforcer’s face under the black hood, and spoke coldly again.
“Your main god is useless.”
But this once again confirmed Luo Ning’s unusual nature.
“You must not insult the main god.” The enforcer’s cold, mechanical voice echoed through the dark space, and the floating light particles around them became agitated.
“I didn’t insult him,” Jiang Nan denied.
Yan Xin chuckled and said.
“I can testify that she didn’t say any curse words.”
Jiang Nan only admitted that she hadn’t used curse words, which made the enforcer pause.
They were not real people after all. They didn’t have human thoughts and were only controlled by the so-called main god. Everything was calculated by data.
They couldn’t detect Jiang Nan’s angry emotions, nor could they find any insults to the main god in her words.
The enforcer said nothing more, only urging Jiang Nan to walk to the remaining compartment.
As Jiang Nan walked, she still didn’t give up on searching for Luo Ning’s figure.
At this moment, Lin Jia played with her long hair, smiled at Jiang Nan, and said.
“Don’t look anymore. I counted when we came in. There are only five compartments. Since you’ve arrived, the remaining person can only be dead.”
Her gaze fell on Jiang Nan, and she saw her body unintentionally tremble after hearing her words. The smile in her eyes deepened. Her gaze, which could pierce through a person’s heart, seemed to want to capture something else from her.
Jiang Nan’s footsteps paused. She looked up at her, and the emotion in her eyes was unreadable.
Her slender arm hung by her side, and she slightly clenched her fist. Her fingernails dug into her flesh, causing a sharp pain.
Even though she knew that nothing could happen to Luo Ning, she still couldn’t control the sharp pain in her heart when she heard the words.
The light particles floated to her side, gathering in front of her eyes to form a beautiful scene.
At this moment, a soft laugh sounded in her ear, and then a voice, as if someone was right next to her, spoke.
“I’m not dead.”
It was Luo Ning’s voice, with a hint of a smile, as if to soothe Jiang Nan and make her feel at ease about her disappearance.
Hearing this, Jiang Nan’s eyes flickered, and a thought passed through her mind. She didn’t let anyone else see her strangeness.
There must be another reason why Luo Ning couldn’t appear.
So, Jiang Nan calmly met Lin Jia’s gaze, with even a smile in her eyes, and said.
“Yes, she’s dead.”
Jiang Nan’s words stunned the others, but before they could figure out if Jiang Nan was joking, she had already sat down in the remaining compartment.
After everyone was seated, the shackles in the compartments rose with a few “clack” sounds, and they were trapped inside.
The number of times enforcers appeared was very few, and players had no way of knowing what other punishments, besides lingering in an instance, there were for violating the rules.
After the enforcers disappeared, a person whose face could not be seen appeared and sat in front of the players.
Floating light particles gathered on the person, and the light overflowing from their body made it impossible to see their figure clearly.
Jiang Nan didn’t look at the person immediately. Instead, she lowered her eyes to look at the shackles in her hands.
A loose pair of shackles dangled on her slender wrist. She moved her hand, and the shackles slipped off. The ones on her feet were the same.
Jiang Nan was silent for a moment. Only then did she look up at the person in front of her, and then fell silent again.
Even though she couldn’t see the person’s face, the familiar figure, the violent pounding of her heart when she got close to them, and the subtle scent of jasmine confirmed the person’s identity.
As if sensing Jiang Nan’s gaze, the person also looked over, meeting Jiang Nan’s eyes.
Jiang Nan knew the person was smiling at her, and it was a very smug smile.
On the players’ tables, a blank piece of paper and a pen appeared.
The person rested their hand on their chin, laughed softly, and then spoke with a hint of languidness.
“Hello, I’m sure you were all informed of your crimes when you were arrested. I’m Thanatos, a grim reaper one level higher than the enforcers.”
Hearing this name, Jiang Nan’s hand holding the pen froze. The look in her eyes as she suddenly looked at the person was sharp and astonished. She unconsciously tightened her grip, almost breaking the pen in her hand.
She bit her lower lip, drawing a hint of bl00d.
【Don’t be surprised. It’s watching.】
Luo Ning’s voice sounded in her ear, comforting Jiang Nan as usual.
“It?”
Instinctively, Jiang Nan knew the “it” the other person was referring to was the main god.
What was the relationship between Luo Ning… no, Thanatos and the main god?
Jiang Nan retracted her gaze and no longer looked at the other person. She slightly furrowed her brows, looking a little displeased with the other person for deceiving her.
Thanatos spoke again, her tone still languid, as if she wasn’t interested in anything here, and even with a hint of a dissatisfied complaint.
“When the main god called me here, I was still on vacation, so I’m not very happy right now, just like you all. So, you don’t need to be nervous.”
“Next, I will conduct a routine inquiry. Just answer truthfully. I don’t like noise, so I’ve already sealed your voices. You won’t be able to make a sound or communicate with people you know. You can only write down your answers on the paper. Don’t lie. The main god is omniscient, or you’ll have to bear the consequences.”
Thanatos warned them. As for whether they listened, that was their own business.
A system panel appeared in front of her. Her slender hand swiped on it a few times. As if she saw something interesting, she chuckled and said.
“Just answer where Henrietta is right now.”
Her tone was casual, as if it were an insignificant question, but the pressure that suddenly descended and the floating light particles around them made the players not dare to be careless.
They thought for a moment, picked up their pens, and scribbled something.
Jiang Nan didn’t move to write. After a while, she picked up her pen and tried to write one stroke.
But there was no obstruction as she had imagined. The floating light particles were just like surveillance for her. In the end, Jiang Nan only wrote three words on the paper.
In the end, all the pieces of paper had “don’t know” written on them, as if due to some interference.
Thanatos’s gaze swept over them. She chuckled indifferently and, based on the panel in front of her, began to ask again.
“Did anyone instruct you to destroy the instance?”
As her words fell, they could clearly feel the pressure in the air increase. The players’ hands uncontrollably picked up their pens and wrote something on the paper.
But when Thanatos looked at their papers again, there were only two words.
“No.”
Thanatos yawned, then tapped the panel a few times, and finally clicked “confirm” under “no anomaly.”
The black-robed enforcers appeared again. Next to Thanatos, the data on their faces showed an anomaly, then returned to normal.
They spoke. Their emotionless, robotic voices sounded in everyone’s ears, an apology without remorse.
“We apologize for our oversight. As compensation, for the third layer instance you will be entering, we will choose the simplest one for you.”
This was another way of forcing them, forcing them to enter the instance immediately.
The players’ eyes flickered, each with their own thoughts.
After the enforcers took the other players out, Thanatos’s figure was finally revealed.
As Jiang Nan was about to leave, she looked back, meeting Luo Ning’s eyes, which were serious.
【The main god has found you. It will discover my betrayal. I need your trust.】
