Sir, You've Got The Wrong Person - Chapter 10
Jun Tianyu came back to his senses. He looked at Yan Yiyi’s flushed face and her slightly wet, messy hair. It seemed he already understood what had happened. His expression was a little awkward, and there was even a hint of disappointment in his eyes, though he hid it well. He only smiled lightly and looked at Chu Mufeng as he said, “I thought Young Master Chu had already gone to rest. But it seems you are here with Miss Rumeng. Judging from the scene, are you and Miss Rumeng old acquaintances?”
“No!” Yan Yiyi quickly interrupted before Jun Tianyu could finish. She didn’t even care that moving might tear the wound on her back. Hugging the blanket, she endured the pain and quickly sat up, moving to the end of the bed. She wrapped herself tightly in the blanket. With tears brimming in her eyes and a face full of grief and anger, she lowered her head and sobbed. “My Lord, please stand up for me. I have never met Young Master Chu before. Just now, he suddenly broke in while I was sleeping… and he… he tried to take advantage of me.”
As soon as she finished, she started crying again. Her expression was full of shame and anger. With the wound on her back torn open, she looked just like a helpless victim who had been bullied.
Chu Mufeng looked at her with a calm face. Watching her perform her little act, he said nothing. He only stood up slowly and with ease.
Jun Tianyu frowned slightly and looked at Yan Yiyi. His voice was gentle as he said, “Miss Rumeng, since you have been wronged in my mansion, I will surely seek justice for you. But there is one thing I still don’t understand. When I searched this room just a moment ago, there was no one else here. It’s only been a short while, so when did Young Master Chu sneak in?”
Yan Yiyi carefully wiped her tears. After sobbing for a while, she continued, “Just now, I lied to you, my Lord. Please forgive me. When you came in, Young Master Chu was already on my bed. That shout of ‘an assassin’ was also me calling out. I didn’t expect that Young Master Chu would threaten me… saying that if you found him here, he would ruin my face and let others… shame me later. I was too scared at that moment, so I had to lie and say no one was here. Luckily, you returned, my Lord, or else… or else I would have…”
Her sobbing grew softer but more pitiful. Yan Yiyi kept her head down, not daring to look at Jun Tianyu, let alone at Chu Mufeng. She didn’t know how much Jun Tianyu believed her story. But now, in this situation, there was no way to clear things up. So, playing the victim was her best option. As long as she could get Chu Mufeng taken away, that would be enough.
“My dear Miss Rumeng, I will certainly make things right for you. You’re still injured, so don’t cry too much and harm your health,” Jun Tianyu said softly. He sat by the bed, gently pulled her into his arms, and comforted her with tender words. His hand carefully avoided the torn wound on her back, and his eyes looked at her with warmth.
“Thank you, my Lord!” Yan Yiyi sobbed as she leaned against Jun Tianyu’s chest. Then she slightly raised her eyes and glanced at Chu Mufeng. Her tearful eyes, however, held a hint of pride and provocation.
Chu Mufeng narrowed his dark eyes a little and gave her a warning look. Yan Yiyi met his eyes defiantly, then cleverly snuggled deeper into Jun Tianyu’s embrace and sweetly called out, “My Lord,” while pretending to be afraid as she glanced again at Chu Mufeng.
Jun Tianyu held her a little tighter and patted her gently to soothe her. He softly brushed away some of her hair and continued in a tender voice, “Don’t be afraid. Young Master Chu must have drunk too much tonight and accidentally come into your room.”
As he spoke, he raised his head to look at Chu Mufeng and smiled. “I was in such high spirits today and made Young Master Chu drink a few extra cups of wine. He probably mistook Miss Rumeng for his own beloved lady and nearly caused a small misunderstanding. I hope Young Master Chu won’t take it to heart.”
It was clear he was giving Chu Mufeng an excuse to back down politely. It was indeed puzzling for a prince to treat a rich merchant like this at his own birthday banquet—offering him such honor. And now, showing him such courtesy again… it made one wonder what hidden meaning lay behind all this.
Peeking at Jun Tianyu, Yan Yiyi couldn’t help but ponder. Then, unconsciously, she glanced at Chu Mufeng. No wonder he had stayed so calm, even though he knew Jun Tianyu had returned. It seemed he was well aware that Jun Tianyu wouldn’t—or couldn’t— do anything to him.
When she looked at him, Chu Mufeng lazily swept his gaze over her, then turned to Jun Tianyu with a gentle smile. His voice, too, was calm and polite, without any argument. He simply followed Jun Tianyu’s lead and said, “Your Highness is too kind. I did indeed drink too much tonight and carelessly offended Miss Rumeng. I hope the young lady can forgive my rudeness.”
“Since Young Master Chu meant no harm, let’s consider this matter settled. Miss Rumeng, for my sake, would you let it go as well?” Jun Tianyu acted as a mediator, lowering his head to look at Yan Yiyi and gently asking for her opinion.
Yan Yiyi glanced at Chu Mufeng with timid eyes and shrank further into Jun Tianyu’s arms. She sensibly said, “I will let Your Highness decide for me.”
Then she looked up at Jun Tianyu as if she wanted to say more but hesitated.
“If you have something to say, just say it,” Jun Tianyu said softly, noticing her hesitation.
“My Lord, could you let me change to another room? I’m afraid Young Master Chu might accidentally come to the wrong place again,” Yan Yiyi asked, biting her lip and speaking in an even softer voice than usual.
Jun Tianyu chuckled. “I thought it was something serious. But if it’s just this small matter, of course, I will arrange it for you.”
Then he looked at Chu Mufeng with an apologetic smile and said, “I’m sorry for troubling you tonight, Young Master Chu. Please go back to your room and rest well. Tomorrow, I will personally apologize to you properly.”
After saying that, he slightly nodded to Chu Mufeng, then held up Yan Yiyi in his arms and walked toward the door. Yan Yiyi was so startled that she clutched his shoulder tightly and softly cried out, “My Lord?” Her voice clearly carried a hidden question.
Jun Tianyu lowered his head to look at her, his voice as gentle as ever. “Tonight, you will rest in my room first. Tomorrow, I will have the servants prepare another room for you.”
His voice wasn’t loud, but it was enough for Chu Mufeng, who stood by the bed, to hear it. Chu Mufeng slowly turned to look at Yan Yiyi. She, too, was clearly shocked by Jun Tianyu’s words. Her hand slipped a little from his shoulder, and she struggled to get down from his arms, saying repeatedly, “My Lord, I can’t, I can’t! I come from humble origins. How could I be worthy to…”
But then, her eyes unintentionally met Chu Mufeng’s, and she caught the subtle warning in his eyes. She shot him a rebellious glance before sweetly replying, “Thank you, my Lord!”
Jun Tianyu let out a low chuckle as he carried her out of the room.
In that brief turn, Yan Yiyi deliberately cast a glance at Chu Mufeng. Seeing the faint darkness clouding his face, her mood lifted for reasons she couldn’t explain, and with a sly sense of triumph, she threw him a flirtatious wink. Nestled deeper into Jun Tianyu’s arms, she no longer cared how cold Chu Mufeng’s had become.
“Miss Rumeng, I just helped you out back there. In return, don’t you think you owe me an explanation for what’s really going on?
As they made their way back to his quarters, Jun Tianyu gently laid her down on the bed, but his voice had lost its warmth. His look was calm and even a little cold.
Yan Yiyi froze for a moment. Although she knew that Jun Tianyu was not as clueless as he pretended to be, she did not expect him to confront her so directly. She had assumed he would continue to play along.
“Miss Rumeng?” Jun Tianyu’s voice cooled as his eyes dropped to her ankle. His eyes narrowed slightly, and without warning, his hand gripped her ankle, giving it a slight but firm squeeze. His gaze sharpened. “Miss Rumeng, this ankle of yours… isn’t sprained at all.”
Yan Yiyi met his eyes and calmly pulled her foot back from his hand. She no longer bothered with her usual sweet act. Her voice returned to its natural, steady tone as she said, “It seems Your Highness has already seen through everything. You simply chose not to expose me. I lied to Your Highness earlier today, and just now, I used you again. I am willing to accept whatever punishment you decide.”
“Whether it’s reward or punishment, that is for me to judge.” Jun Tianyu let her withdraw her foot without protest, his eyes remaining cool. “But before that, you must answer a few of my questions.”
Yan Yiyi looked at him steadily and replied, “Your Highness may ask whatever you wish. But… I hope that, in light of me saving your life, I may have the right to choose not to answer certain questions.”
Jun Tianyu’s brows drew together. “Are you bargaining with me?”
Yan Yiyi did not flinch from his stare. “Your Highness, I appeared here today because someone entrusted me with a task. Naturally, there are matters I cannot speak of. But I can assure Your Highness—I meant you no harm.”
Jun Tianyu studied her in silence, weighing the truth behind her words.
Yan Yiyi didn’t interrupt his thoughts. She let him contemplate on his own, her gaze drifting casually around the room.
At last, Jun Tianyu spoke, his voice slow and measured. “Fine. I’ll allow you to refuse to answer three questions. As for which three—they’re for you to decide. This is as far as I will compromise. Although you saved my life today, if I hadn’t gone to rescue you first, you might not have become the assassin’s target.
Yan Yiyi knew his words weren’t entirely fair, but she also understood that his patience had limits. If she pushed further, a single command from him could cost her life.
“Very well. Your Highness, please ask.”
Jun Tianyu’s eyes sharpened. “First question: What is your relationship with Chu Mufeng? Why was he in your room tonight?”
“There is no relationship between us,” Yan Yiyi replied swiftly, her voice steady. “And I have no idea why he appeared in my room.”
Seeing Jun Tianyu’s faint skepticism, she added, “If Your Highness doesn’t believe me, you can ask Lord Chu yourself.”
Back in that room, Chu Mufeng hadn’t exposed her. He hadn’t revealed that she was Yan Yiyi—the woman who once married him. Clearly, he had his plans. She couldn’t be certain, but perhaps it was tied to that old wedding, the one everyone knew had bound the Chu and Mu families. Ever since she left, no one had mentioned the Chu family’s young madam. It seemed that even now, Chu Mufeng continued to hide the truth—that the bride he married back then wasn’t really the legitimate daughter of the Mu family at all.
Earlier, Chu Mufeng hadn’t mentioned a word, so there was no reason to think he would change his story if Jun Tianyu questioned him. What’s more, even if he did suddenly claim she was his wife, anyone who knew she wasn’t the true young lady of the Mu family would never believe she had once stood beside Chu Mufeng at the wedding altar.
“Second question. What is Lord Chu’s real purpose in coming to Xijing?”
Yan Yiyi’s brows drew together as she looked at Jun Tianyu. “Your Highness, I’m not familiar with Lord Chu. How could I possibly know why he came to Xijing?”
She only knew he was here to inspect some ranch business. As for any deeper motives, she doubted she would ever be privy to them. Even if curiosity pricked at her, she wouldn’t dare follow him too closely.
“Miss Rumeng is not actually from a brothel background, is she?” Jun Tianyu’s dark eyes fixed on her as he suddenly changed the subject.
“Ah?”
His abrupt shift in question caught Yan Yiyi off guard, and it took her a moment to recover. She hesitated, then gave a small nod.
“Then why slip into the ranks of the dancing girls?”
“To protect Your Highness.”
“And why would you protect me?”
“As I said earlier—I was entrusted with the task.”
“Entrusted by whom?”
“I’m sorry. I cannot tell you.”
“Your real name, then?”
“I’m sorry. I cannot disclose that either.”
To give her name was to invite trouble—something she had always taken care to avoid.
“How did you know I would be in danger today?”
“Someone told me.”
“Who?”
“I’m sorry. I cannot say.”
“Well, aren’t you full of ‘I cannot says’!”
Jun Tianyu’s hand suddenly shot out, his fingers pinching her chin and forcing her to meet his eyes. His dark eyes roved across her face, searching, probing. After a long, heavy silence, he spoke, his voice low and deliberate.
“Miss Rumeng, it’s clear to me—you have no desire to be entangled with Chu Mufeng. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have used me so thoroughly just now. So, how about we strike a deal? I’ll assist you in severing all connections with him—in exchange, you’ll reveal the identity of the person who sent you.
