Chapter 19: So, Sister, How Do You Think I Played?
Song Jin-yuan tried it and felt that everything was perfect.
“It’s good. Thank you, Sister.”
“Great. Let’s play some duo queue to get a feel for it. We have a practice match against another team this afternoon, and you’ll probably get to play in it.”
Song Jin-yuan nodded. “Okay.”
Tong Yi sat down at her own station and opened the game. While waiting for it to load, Tong Yi couldn’t help but look at the person next to her several times. She really felt that this little jungle star was quite well-behaved.
In their profession, there were players who were obedient, and there were players who were skilled. But it was very rare to find someone who was both skilled and obedient, since talented people often came with a sense of arrogance. But Song Jin-yuan was different.
Suddenly, Song Jin-yuan turned her head slightly and looked at Tong Yi with a questioning look. “Sister, are you watching me?”
Caught in the act, Tong Yi came back to her senses and awkwardly cleared her throat twice. “Uh, your hair color is really pretty,” Tong Yi said, coming up with an excuse.
Song Jin-yuan raised her hand to brush her bangs aside. “I really like pink,” she said. She had dyed her hair various shades of pink before.
“The color really suits you,” Tong Yi quickly said. Because Song Jin-yuan’s skin was very fair, paired with such a bold hair color, she looked vibrant and a bit powerful.
“Then, do you like it, Sister?” Song Jin-yuan suddenly asked.
Tong Yi was taken aback, not knowing why Song Jin-yuan asked that, but she still nodded instinctively. “I do.”
After hearing Tong Yi say that, Song Jin-yuan didn’t say anything else. But she seemed to be happy, pursing her lips and smiling.
“Okay, I’m in. I’ll invite you to the party,” Tong Yi said, turning her attention back to the game interface that had already loaded.
Soon, Tong Yi created a lobby and invited Song Jin-yuan to the party. After Song Jin-yuan clicked “ready,” she picked up her gaming headset and put it on.
“Don’t be nervous. We’re just playing a few casual games together,” Tong Yi told Song Jin-yuan.
“Okay,” Song Jin-yuan nodded in response. Soon, they entered a game.
This game, the two of them still worked very well together. Because they were sitting right next to each other, their communication was more immediate, and the effect was even better than when they played online. After a while, Tong Yi couldn’t help but think to herself that she had been right about her. Song Jin-yuan had an incredible synergy with her.
Just then, Song Jin-yuan, who was in the mid-lane, was targeted by an enemy mid-laner’s lock-on ability. She was low on health.
“Sister, help me block the skill!” Song Jin-yuan blurted out.
“Coming!” Tong Yi used her Q ability to dash in front of Song Jin-yuan, blocking the damage from the lock-on skill. Song Jin-yuan immediately ran to a safe place and began to recall.
Next, Song Jin-yuan excitedly took off her headset and hung it around her neck, looking a bit thrilled. “Sister, you’re so good!” Song Jin-yuan’s expression was incredibly genuine, like a little fangirl.
Tong Yi was stunned for a moment but couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you.”
About ten minutes into the game, Xia Yun came in with a thermos cup. Her thermos was filled with hot water and goji berries, and steam was still rising from it.
“You’re fast. You’re already playing duo queue,” Xia Yun said, walking behind them and looking at their game screens.
“Sister Xia Yun,” Song Jin-yuan said politely.
Xia Yun looked at Song Jin-yuan with a kind expression, raising her hand to pat her head. “The little jungle star is so cute. You play your game. I’m just watching.”
“Okay, Sister Xia Yun.”
Then, Xia Yun stood behind them and switched to spectator mode, taking a sip of her goji berry water every so often. Before long, Xia Yun started making weird noises.
“Hiss…”
“Wow, that’s amazing.”
“Damn, you can do that…”
Because Xia Yun wouldn’t stop talking and making strange sounds, the people in the training room were drawn over. Soon, there were several people standing behind Tong Yi and Song Jin-yuan.
The two other jungler players who were also trying out for New Fire stood behind Song Jin-yuan, watching her play. Their expressions were a mixture of thoughtful and strange. They had initially thought that the jungler position for the first team would inevitably go to one of them, as New Fire didn’t have a strong jungler right now. But after seeing this player’s moves, they immediately lost all hope. Unless, of course, this player decided not to stay at New Fire after the tryout.
After this game ended, Tong Yi finally couldn’t help but look at the several people standing behind them. “What are you all doing? Don’t you have your own things to do?”
At Tong Yi’s words, everyone awkwardly dispersed. Only Xia Yun remained, smiling.
“Just seeing how the little jungler plays. Don’t be so stingy, Team Captain Tong,” Xia Yun said, taking a sip of hot water.
“So, Sister Xia Yun, how do you think I played?” Song Jin-yuan immediately asked.
“You have my style from back in the day!” Xia Yun patted Song Jin-yuan’s shoulder. “Keep it up!”
“Okay, thank you, Sister Xia Yun.”
Tong Yi was worried that Xia Yun’s praise would make Song Jin-yuan proud and quickly pulled Xia Yun away. After all, Song Jin-yuan was young and easily impressed. It wouldn’t be good if Xia Yun’s flattery went to her head.
“Alright, go do your own thing. I’m going to play a few more games with her,” Tong Yi said, pushing Xia Yun back to her own station.
“Fine, fine. Look at you being so stingy,” Xia Yun said, playfully teasing her.
After pushing Xia Yun back to her seat, Tong Yi returned to Song Jin-yuan’s side. Song Jin-yuan was waiting for Tong Yi to come back to continue playing duo queue, so she was just idly clicking around the game interface.
Suddenly, a bottle of water was placed in front of Song Jin-yuan. “I forgot to get you water. Are you thirsty?” Tong Yi said, looking down at Song Jin-yuan.
Song Jin-yuan looked up and stared at Tong Yi without saying a word.
“What’s wrong?” Tong Yi asked, a little confused. With that, she picked up the bottle of water, unscrewed and screwed the cap back on, and placed it back in front of Song Jin-yuan. Only then did Song Jin-yuan pick it up and take two sips.
“Sister Xia Yun’s personality is just like that. She praises everyone. Don’t take it too seriously,” Tong Yi said, sitting down in her own seat.
“So, Sister, how do you think I played?” Song Jin-yuan asked.
Tong Yi paused at the question. After a while, she gave an honest evaluation. “You have potential, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement.”
Song Jin-yuan didn’t seem at all displeased with this assessment. On the contrary, she looked a little happy. “Then, Sister, you’ll have to teach me more in the future.”
There she goes again, using that cute, pleading tone.
Tong Yi cleared her throat, remaining calm. “If we become teammates in the future, then I will.”
She was deliberately hinting to Song Jin-yuan, telling her to sign the contract and stay at New Fire after the tryout. Only by becoming a teammate could Tong Yi teach her things. After all, Song Jin-yuan had many options, and New Fire didn’t really have any advantages. It was a subtle way of trying to win her over. As for whether Song Jin-yuan understood, she didn’t know.
“Alright, let’s continue,” Tong Yi said.
Song Jin-yuan nodded and returned to a focused state. They continued to play until noon. They won every duo queue game, and both of their stats were impressive.
After another game, Tong Yi was about to tell Song Jin-yuan to take a break when Li Qinghan came back with several large bags of food. When she walked in, she was still on the phone.
“Okay, okay… We’ll talk next time. I have things to do, so I’m hanging up now.”
After Li Qinghan hung up, she placed the bags on the table. “I brought lunch back for you. Eat and rest well. We have a practice match against the Silver Wing team this afternoon.”
As she spoke, Li Qinghan saw Song Jin-yuan and quickly walked over to her. “You’re Xiao Yuan, right?” Li Qinghan asked.
Song Jin-yuan nodded. “Hello, Coach Li.”
“You have the makings of a star player. You’re so pretty,” Li Qinghan said, pinching Song Jin-yuan’s cheek. “You’ll be playing in the practice match this afternoon. Are you confident?”
“Of course I am!” Song Jin-yuan replied very decisively.
Li Qinghan nodded in satisfaction.
Tong Yi asked, “Are we playing against Silver Wing’s first or second team?”
“First team, of course!” Li Qinghan immediately replied. “How could that guy Old Meng have his second team play a practice match against us? I’d go over to their base and beat him up!” Old Meng, whom Li Qinghan referred to, was Silver Wing’s coach. They had likely known each other for a long time and were close.
Xia Yun slowly got up from her chair and chimed in, “Yeah, Silver Wing isn’t a strong team either. Didn’t they get eliminated in the regular season, too? They’re pretty much the same as us.” In the regular season, Silver Wing was also one of the teams that were eliminated. New Fire was second to last, and Silver Wing was third to last. Their rankings were indeed not very different.
“Alright, go and eat. It’ll get cold,” Li Qinghan told them.
Tong Yi walked to the table and got a portion of food for herself and Song Jin-yuan. She then saw that one of the bags contained Roujiamo (Chinese meat buns).
“You brought these, too,” Tong Yi said, a little surprised. This store’s Roujiamo was one of the few good meals she had eaten in Jiangcheng.
“Yeah, I just happened to pass by and thought I’d get some for you,” Li Qinghan said.
Tong Yi picked up one of the Roujiamo and handed it to Song Jin-yuan. Song Jin-yuan held the paper bag and looked at it, seeming a bit hesitant.
“What’s wrong? Don’t you like Roujiamo?” Tong Yi asked.
Song Jin-yuan thought for a moment before speaking. “Does this have fatty meat in it?”
“Fatty meat?” Tong Yi was taken aback. “You mean fatty pork? You don’t eat fatty pork?”
As she spoke, Song Jin-yuan had already taken a bite. She was about to answer Tong Yi when she saw Tong Yi pick up a new Roujiamo and put it in her hand. The one she had taken a bite of was taken away by Tong Yi.
“This one has more lean meat. You eat this one,” Tong Yi told Song Jin-yuan.
