Chapter 20: Be Good, Put on Your Jacket
Song Jin-yuan looked at the Roujiamo in Tong Yi’s hand that she had taken a bite of and was stunned.
“Then this one…” Song Jin-yuan started hesitantly.
Tong Yi glanced at the Roujiamo in her own hand and said naturally, “I’ll eat this one.” With that, Tong Yi took both portions of rice and walked back to their stations.
Song Jin-yuan came back to her senses after a while and turned to go back to her seat. Her steps, however, seemed a little happy and bouncy.
After lunch, Tong Yi started to feel sleepy, so she decided to take a short nap at her desk. Before she lay down, Tong Yi looked at Song Jin-yuan next to her. Her eyes were fixed on the computer screen, which showed that she was about to start a new game.
“Aren’t you tired?” Tong Yi couldn’t help but ask.
Song Jin-yuan looked at Tong Yi and shook her head. “I’m not tired.” As she said this, her gaze seemed to glance at the area behind Tong Yi.
Tong Yi, while marveling at the energy of youth, started talking to Song Jin-yuan. “Then I’ll sleep for a bit. If you get tired, take a break too, or you won’t have any energy this afternoon. You can also go back to your room to rest.”
Song Jin-yuan nodded quickly. “Okay, Sister. I’ll go to sleep if I get tired… but will playing a game be too loud for you to sleep?”
“No,” Tong Yi answered quickly. “Keyboard sounds aren’t noise to me, and you’re not the only one playing.” The sound of keyboards and mice in the training room was almost constant. Tong Yi was used to sleeping through it. With that, Tong Yi yawned again, put her head down on her arm, and closed her eyes to sleep.
A moment later, Tong Yi heard the sound of the chair next to her being pushed away. She didn’t pay much attention, but then she heard Song Jin-yuan walk behind her to the window and close the open one. The cold wind of early spring was blocked out, and Tong Yi felt much more comfortable sleeping at her desk.
Then, with a very soft sound, Song Jin-yuan returned to her seat and started her game. Tong Yi, who was sleeping at the desk, didn’t move, but the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but turn up slightly. She felt a warmth inside. She hadn’t expected Song Jin-yuan to be so thoughtful and considerate.
If she thought about it, Song Jin-yuan must have known her for a while now, or she wouldn’t have suddenly bought her a drink at the internet cafe that day. But Tong Yi couldn’t bring herself to ask. She couldn’t just ask if she was her fan. It would sound a little narcissistic.
As Tong Yi thought, she quickly fell asleep. She slept for about twenty minutes. When she woke up, Song Jin-yuan was in the middle of a killing spree in her game.
“Sister, you’re awake!” Song Jin-yuan spared a glance for Tong Yi, then used a series of skills to secure another kill.
Tong Yi stretched, and seeing that Song Jin-yuan’s game was almost over, she simply pulled her chair over to watch her play. Song Jin-yuan was currently playing in a high-ranked match. The game’s major seasons lasted a year and were divided into four mini-seasons. It was the beginning of the second mini-season. At the start of each new season, all players’ high-ranked points were reset to 1200, and they had to climb again. Since high-ranked matches could only be played solo during a specific time, the high-ranked leaderboard was a reliable way to prove a player’s skill and ability.
“What’s your score now?” Tong Yi asked.
“2019 points. Sister, is that a good score?” Song Jin-yuan replied.
“That’s a great score. You didn’t have much time to play before, and you’re already over 2000 points,” Tong Yi praised her sincerely. Many professional players didn’t even have a score as high as Song Jin-yuan’s. Tong Yi herself only had a little over 2100 points, ranking in the seventies on the leaderboard. At this level, every point was hard-won.
“Before the tryout, I played for a long time to get my score up. I even went on a losing streak and almost cried from frustration,” Song Jin-yuan said honestly.
Tong Yi couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“Sister, what are you laughing at?”
“You seem so calm. I can’t imagine you being so frustrated that you’d cry.”
Song Jin-yuan looked at Tong Yi for two seconds, then let out a light hum. “Then you’ll see next time.”
Tong Yi laughed and patted Song Jin-yuan’s shoulder. “It’s okay. Next time you feel like crying from frustration, come to your captain. Your captain will give you some advice.”
Hearing Tong Yi’s words, Song Jin-yuan was stunned for a moment, and her hand movements paused for a few seconds.
“Focus on the game,” Tong Yi said, reaching over from behind Song Jin-yuan and taking her right hand. Tong Yi guided her fingers to a specific spot, helping her dodge an enemy skill. Then, she naturally let go.
“Alright, you continue,” Tong Yi said casually.
The moment Tong Yi let go of her hand, Song Jin-yuan quickly started playing again, using a series of skills to take down the enemy. She didn’t say a word, but her heart was racing, and even her ears felt hot for some reason.
“What’s wrong?” Tong Yi noticed that Song Jin-yuan’s movements had become a bit stiff and asked, puzzled.
Song Jin-yuan quickly shook her head, not saying a word. This made Tong Yi even more confused.
A few minutes later, Song Jin-yuan quickly ended the match. The moment the victory screen appeared on the computer, Song Jin-yuan let go of her mouse and unbuttoned her jacket, pulling the collar open. “It’s so hot. Why is it so hot?” Song Jin-yuan said, unbuttoning her jacket one by one.
Song Jin-yuan was also wearing a scarf, but she had taken it off and put it on the desk when she came in. Now she was complaining about her clothes being too warm.
“Maybe it’s a little stuffy. I’ll open the window for you,” Tong Yi said, quickly getting up to open the window.
Song Jin-yuan was still taking off her jacket, grumbling with dissatisfaction. “It’s all my mom’s fault. She insisted that I wear so many layers when I left. I told her it’s not cold anymore…”
“The temperature difference between morning and noon is huge. It’s easy to get a cold if you don’t wear enough,” Tong Yi told Song Jin-yuan. The weather in Jiangcheng had been strange lately. It was cold in the morning but got hot around noon. It was exactly the kind of weather that made people sick if they weren’t careful.
Song Jin-yuan was only wearing a thin pink sweater underneath. Tong Yi’s brows furrowed when she saw it.
“Be good, put on your jacket,” Tong Yi said, walking over to try to convince her. “I’ve already opened the window, so it won’t be hot.”
When Song Jin-yuan heard the word “good,” her body stiffened again. She didn’t say anything but quietly took the scarf from the table and buried her face in it.
“Xiao Yuan, did you hear me?” Tong Yi’s voice came again.
Song Jin-yuan was silent for two seconds, then replied in a muffled voice, “I don’t want to wear it.”
After she said that, Song Jin-yuan didn’t hear Tong Yi’s voice again. Just as she thought Tong Yi wouldn’t press the issue, she felt a weight on her shoulder. A thin jacket was placed on her.
“Sister?” Song Jin-yuan looked up and turned around, bewildered.
“Wear my clothes. This jacket isn’t thick,” Tong Yi said to Song Jin-yuan. “I just brought it to the training room yesterday. I haven’t worn it.”
Song Jin-yuan looked at the jacket on her, didn’t say a word, and quietly put it on.
“Thank you, Sister. You’re such a good person,” Song Jin-yuan said with a smile.
Hearing Song Jin-yuan’s exaggerated thanks, Tong Yi couldn’t help but smile and gently pinched her soft cheek.
“You’re so cute,” Tong Yi said sincerely.
Just then, Xia Yun, who was playing a game nearby, let out an angry shout. “Damn, do you even know how to play? Come on, turn on your mic!”
“Turn on your mic! Don’t be a coward!”
“You 0/8 marksman, why are you even playing? Go find a job in a factory!”
Hearing Xia Yun start to argue with her teammates in the game, Tong Yi and Song Jin-yuan both looked over.
“Here we go again,” Tong Yi said, looking pained. Then, as if it was a common occurrence, she walked over and used her mouse to turn off Xia Yun’s mic and headset. The voice of the marksman immediately disappeared.
“Uh… I won’t cuss anymore, Team Captain Tong,” Xia Yun said, immediately kneeling in apology.
Tong Yi knew Xia Yun’s temper and could only sigh helplessly. “Play well. If you lose, you lose. Just don’t cuss,” Tong Yi said. If it were a regular player, cussing wouldn’t be a big deal, and the worst punishment would be a penalty to their integrity score. But professional players had to be especially careful about this. Even when playing privately, it was best not to cuss, or they could get penalized by the league.
Xia Yun’s eyes were fixed on the screen, and her hands were busy, but she was still angrily talking to Tong Yi. “Team Captain Tong, you don’t even know. This marksman is so bad. If I don’t get 2000 points today, Coach Li is going to scold me to death!”
“You can get matched with any kind of teammate. Just stay calm,” Tong Yi said, patting Xia Yun’s shoulder. “Don’t cuss anymore.”
While Tong Yi was talking to Xia Yun, Song Jin-yuan sat at her station, picked up the water on the table, unscrewed the cap, and took a sip. Then, she stared blankly at Tong Yi’s back, a look of deep thought in her eyes.
A short while later, Tong Yi returned to Song Jin-yuan’s side, and Song Jin-yuan immediately looked at her.
“Should we continue duo queue, Sister?” Song Jin-yuan asked.
“Not for now. The practice match against Silver Wing is in half an hour. Get ready. It’s a best-of-three match,” Tong Yi told Song Jin-yuan.
Song Jin-yuan nodded quickly. After a moment, as if she had just remembered something, she turned to look at Tong Yi again.
“Sister, I’m going to win,” Song Jin-yuan said to Tong Yi seriously.
Tong Yi was stunned for a moment, then quickly laughed.
“That depends on teamwork. You can’t win just by playing well alone,” Tong Yi said softly.
Song Jin-yuan blinked and said without thinking, “Then, with this kind of confidence, shouldn’t you praise me, Team Captain?”
“Huh?” Tong Yi was stunned again by Song Jin-yuan’s straightforwardness.
