So It Turns Out You’re a Fox Spirit (GL) - Chapter 5
Just as Le Xiaoyao was about to speak, Fu Jin suddenly opened her mouth.
“You go first?”
“No, you go first.”
Please, don’t do this cliché back-and-forth! In the end, Fu Jin spoke first: “Can I borrow your phone to make a call? My phone isn’t with me…”
Just borrowing a phone? Le Xiaoyao panicked internally. So it was just borrowing a phone? Seeing her stay silent for a long moment, Fu Jin asked, “Is it inconvenient?”
“No, no, it’s fine…”
Fu Jin dialed Gu Jiejun’s number directly. “Eric, where are you now? Can you…”
Gu Jiejun had been dealing with some urgent matters at the university and was rushing back. He had intended to call Fu Jin to ask her to wait but realized that her coat, phone, and wallet were all in his car.
Le Xiaoyao sat quietly beside them, listening. “Eric”? Clearly a man. Fu Jin could recall his number so fluently—it must be someone very important to her. Three words popped into Le Xiaoyao’s mind: boyfriend.
Fu Jin hung up and returned the phone to Le Xiaoyao. “He said he’ll be here in ten minutes.”
Somehow, Le Xiaoyao detected a hint of flirtation in that sentence, imagining a man desperately rushing through traffic, worried for his girlfriend.
Le Xiaoyao spoke, slightly probing: “Not many people can remember someone else’s phone number so clearly…”
After returning to China, Fu Jin had been in frequent contact with Gu Jiejun. Of course, her remembering his number so well also had other reasons.
“Oh… I don’t really remember it either; it’s just that his number is a bit unique…”
“Boyfriend?” Le Xiaoyao felt a twinge of sourness.
She was waiting for Fu Jin’s answer when, unexpectedly, Eric arrived. He knocked on the car window. Le Xiaoyao casually sized up Gu Jiejun. Hmph! He’s actually reasonably handsome~
Fu Jin got out of the car, bending slightly toward Le Xiaoyao inside. “Le Xiaoyao, thanks for today!”
Gu Jiejun also said to her, “Ms. Le, thank you for your help today~”
Le Xiaoyao didn’t bother responding to him, only saying “You’re welcome” to Fu Jin.
Watching Fu Jin turn to leave, she felt a little lonely—especially with Eric following like a knight guarding her. Irritated, she was about to start the engine when she saw Fu Jin nearby holding up her phone, gesturing to her.
At that moment, Le Xiaoyao’s phone rang with an unknown number. She answered, and Fu Jin’s gentle voice came through:
“When I invite you to dinner next time, I’ll return your clothes.”
Le Xiaoyao hadn’t even said anything before the call ended. Only then did she realize that her baseball jacket was still draped over her. Why wait until next time? And wait… Fu Jin said next time invite me to dinner? Was she… trying to flirt?
Le Xiaoyao pounded her head, telling herself, “Enough with the daydreaming!” She reminded herself: Fu Jin has a boyfriend… Besides, since when did she like women?
Fu Jin got into the car with Gu Jiejun, sitting in the backseat.
“It’s rare to see you actively invite a friend to dinner. Miss Fu, this isn’t your usual style—you never even invited me to dinner!” Gu Jiejun noted from the rearview mirror that Fu Jin looked well today and her tone was more relaxed.
“I was going to invite you to dinner. If it weren’t for you, I’d have frozen solid. Hand me the phone…” Fu Jin complained while taking his phone to save Le Xiaoyao’s number.
“Seems like Miss Fu is in a good mood today, even joking~”
Back home, Le Xiaoyao tossed and turned, still thinking about that sentence: When I invite you to dinner next time, I’ll return your clothes.
Adding the subject explicitly, it should be: (I) will return your clothes when I invite you to dinner next time. In other words, (Fu Jin) will return your clothes when (she) invites you to dinner next time.
But the subject might not necessarily be “I”; it could be “we.” Would Eric come too? Le Xiaoyao was going crazy: Fu Jin, could you make yourself clear?!
On second thought, inviting someone to dinner might just be a polite gesture. After all, they didn’t exchange phone numbers. Le Xiaoyao did have Eric’s number, and thinking of him made her uneasy about their closeness.
After all, Fu Jin had taken her jacket. Even if she didn’t invite her to dinner, she wouldn’t be so shameless as to not return it. Thinking of this, Le Xiaoyao felt a chill in her heart. She recalled that Fu Jin had once taken her first kiss, yet she hadn’t returned anything then either…
