Stealing Moonlight (Lily ABO) - Chapter 16
The tractor hadn’t even fully stopped when Ruan Jing leaped off, frantic. She nervously rubbed her cheeks repeatedly with the back of her hand until they were red like sun-ripened apples. She didn’t even spare Ruan Zhengzhong a glance, simply charging into the crowded bus station.
Ruan Zhengzhong was still debating whether to greet his little aunt, who had almost killed him. Just as Ruan Jing was about to disappear into the throng, he finally made up his mind to offer a greeting.
She may be unkind, but he couldn’t be unjust. No matter what, at least they could be polite.
But before his “Little aunt, have a safe trip” could even squeeze out, Li Ling’er, half-standing on the side of the tractor, called out leisurely.
“College student, aren’t you taking your luggage? Do you expect me to carry it for you? I’m not a servant!”
Ruan Jing’s body abruptly stopped. Her back, usually as straight as green bamboo, seemed to buckle in surprise. Ruan Zhengzhong suspected she wanted to find a hole in the ground to dive into, but Li Ling’er, utterly lacking in tact, raised her voice and continued to shout, drawing the attention of more than half the bus station crowd.
“Oh, has the college student’s ears gone bad? Or is she too arrogant to talk to people? Why can’t she hear me? I said you didn’t take your luggage!”
“My ears are not bad!” Ruan Jing practically stomped back to the tractor, and Ruan Zhengzhong noticed her ears were bright red when she said this.
But he only dared to glance sideways. He had learned his lesson; he certainly had grown wiser.
As Ruan Jing picked up her luggage, she glanced at the huge bundle next to Li Ling’er, which was almost half her height. She remembered how much effort Li Ling’er had exerted when she first appeared that morning carrying it. But Li Ling’er misunderstood her meaning, nervously clutching the bundle to her chest like a mother hen protecting her chicks. “This is mine!”
Ruan Jing turned and left, genuinely believing Li Ling’er’s heart must be completely rotten, otherwise, she wouldn’t have projected such petty thoughts onto a respectable person.
Li Ling’er watched Ruan Jing squeeze towards the ticket counter from afar, then slowly climbed down from the back of the tractor. After standing up, she carefully smoothed the wrinkles on her skirt. Meeting Ruan Zhengzhong’s greedy gaze, which seemed to cling to her waist and hips, she pulled out two packs of Da Qian Men cigarettes from her bundle.
Ruan Zhengzhong’s eyes immediately lit up like freshly quenched sickles.
“Oh, Ling’er, what are you doing! We’re all from the same village, don’t be so polite! What’s more, given our relationship, to talk…”
“Our relationship? What relationship do we have?”
Li Ling’er held the two packs of cigarettes, dangling them in front of Ruan Zhengzhong like a bone teasing a dog, a playful smirk on her lips, though her eyes held no trace of a smile.
“Siblings! I’ve always treated you like my own sister!” Ruan Zhengzhong was quick-witted and smoothly caught her words. He had almost forgotten that Li Ling’er was no longer who she used to be; perhaps one day she would become a true phoenix soaring in the sky. He absolutely could not afford to offend her now.
“Brother Zhengzhong still knows how to talk. Well, we’ll see each other later.” Li Ling’er smiled with satisfaction. She walked a couple of steps with her bundle, then returned to Ruan Zhengzhong. “Zhengcheng is a good person. I’m not good enough for him.”
Without waiting for Ruan Zhengzhong to reply, she ran off to catch up with Ruan Jing.
“Not good enough for my brother, but good enough for a college student? Bah, she truly talks a better game than she sings!”
Ruan Zhengzhong irritably spat a glob of phlegm onto the ground. But all the while, he strained his neck and squinted his eyes, staring intently at Li Ling’er’s willowy waist and ample backside wrapped in her floral dress.
After she was completely out of sight, Ruan Zhengzhong brought the two packs of cigarettes in his hand to his nose and sniffed hard twice. Unfortunately, he was just a Beta; there was nothing but the smell of tobacco leaves. He immediately decided he would go to the department store later and buy a box of Shalimar vanishing cream. He’d put it on his wife tonight anyway. Once the lights were off, who cared if it was an Omega or a Beta, they were all the same!
