- Chapter 6 - Do You Think I’m Really That Useless?
The next morning, Wang Bupo was pleasantly surprised to find Fu Jing still in the room when he got up.
Fu Jing was sitting at the old desktop computer, the mouse clicking away, focused on something Wang Bupo couldn’t immediately see.
“You’re not going to school today?” Wang Bupo rubbed his sleepy eyes as he prepared to get up and wash up.
“Weekend, no classes,” Fu Jing replied.
“Oh, it’s Saturday already.”
Wang Bupo felt a little dazed. Time passed faster than he expected, yet he still hadn’t fully adapted to this world. He hadn’t even found a proper job yet.
“Didn’t expect this old computer to still work,” Wang Bupo muttered as he finished washing up. Fu Jing was still at the desk, carefully wiping away the dust that had settled on it.
Curious, Wang Bupo leaned over and saw the screen filled with colorful graphs, numbers, and fluctuating bar charts. Somehow, it looked familiar he vaguely remembered his father using a similar setup before, though he had never paid much attention. Just seeing all that data gave him a headache.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“I’m checking the stock market in this world,” Fu Jing explained. “I feel like this world isn’t much different from the one we came from, so I want to see if I can make some money.”
“Can stocks make money?” Wang Bupo was skeptical.
“Yes, but you can lose money too. There’s risk involved,” Fu Jing said. He needed to familiarize himself with the market first.
“Basically the same as my dad’s investments,” Wang Bupo muttered, lowering his gaze. Suddenly, he felt utterly worthless. He’d spent his whole life wasting time in front of computers playing games. No wonder his father used to say he was a disappointment. Looking back, Wang Bupo had to admit it: he really was a bit of a useless person.
“Fu Jing, do you think I’m really that useless?” he asked.
Back then, his father had always bailed him out. Even though he hadn’t caused any major trouble, he had been content living as a carefree rich kid, never thinking of himself as a failure.
But now, facing life on his own, a wave of helplessness hit him.
Fu Jing was about to shut down the computer when he glanced at Wang Bupo coolly.
“What do you think?”
The implied answer was clear, and Wang Bupo felt the sting. Men should be self-r eliant, he could still survive on his own hands, he decided.
In the afternoon, Fu Jing had to return to school for a project and didn’t eat lunch with Wang Bupo.
In the spacious mall, Wang Bupo stood in front of a massive poster:
“PUBG: Gun God” National Competition—Win Millions!
- Everyone’s welcome, from rookies to pros.
- Past glory doesn’t matter, only today’s performance.
- Prizes include huge cash rewards and exclusive chances to collaborate with top players.
Wang Bupo stared at the “million-dollar prize” for a long time before snapping out of it and scanning the QR code with his phone.
He found himself in a quiet internet café in the mall’s basement, sitting in the far corner as he carefully read the registration information.
“PUBG: Gun God” was the most popular competitive shooter in this world, beloved for its realistic battlefield simulation. Wang Bupo realized it was almost identical to the battle royale games he used to play in his previous world one of his favorites.
The competition rules were simple: individual players scored points based on survival time, kills, skill difficulty, and damage output. The top players advanced through three rounds: preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals.
- Prelims and semi-finals allowed solo or team entries, with team points reduced according to team size.
- Prelims lasted two weeks; semi-finals one week.
- The top 50 in prelims and semi-finals received cash rewards.
- Finals spanned three consecutive days, with top ten receiving major prizes:
- Third Prize (4th–10th place): 100,000
- Second Prize (2nd–3rd place): 500,000
- First Prize (1st place): 1,000,000
Seeing the prizes, Wang Bupo, now a penniless guy, immediately signed up. Registration closed tomorrow, and the competition starts next Saturday, giving him a week to practice and regain his old touch.
Gaming was Wang Bupo’s only real skill and one of his few hobbies something his parents used to scold him for obsessing over. Ironically, this very skill would now become his way to earn money.
