- Chapter 8 - That Was Your First Kiss?
Wang Bupo had kept an unusually strict routine that week. He’d wake up at nine in the morning to work out, then spend the entire day at the internet café, only returning home around eleven at night.
Every time Fu Jing came back first, he found Wang Bupo still out or asleep, sometimes murmuring in his sleep.
Once, he vaguely heard phrases like “Let’s go!” “One shot, one headshot!” “Boom! Level-3 helmet down!” all kinds of strange things.
Sometimes, Wang Bupo would even let out two eerie laughs, startling Fu Jing, who was already a light sleeper. He began to wonder if Wang Bupoid was possessed.
It was strange because not long ago, Wang Bupo had been completely normal. Now he was talking in his sleep and having weird dreams. And he slept incredibly deeply Fu Jing had tried waking him several times without success.
This continued for a week.
Wang Bupo felt a little ashamed about it. In the week before the preliminaries, he had been grinding games to get back into form, which caused the gaming scenes to spill over into his dreams. Once the preliminaries began, he reduced his practice time and got more rest, and the sleep-talking stopped.
It was Friday night of the second week.
For once, Wang Bupo didn’t fall asleep just after eleven. He lay quietly in bed with his phone, seemingly waiting for something.
“I’m turning off the lights,” Fu Jing said, reaching for the switch.
“Whoa!”
The moment the lights went out, Wang Bupo sprang up like a resurrected zombie, the phone’s glow illuminating his exaggerated expression.
The first-week preliminaries leaderboard for God of Guns would refresh at midnight.
All week, Wang Bupo had only known his points and estimated ranking, which appeared as a range: 0–50, 50–100, 100–150… etc.
Yesterday, his estimate placed him somewhere in the 0–50 range—but he didn’t know his exact rank.
So he stayed up until midnight, eager to see the results first-hand, expecting to be around forty-something.
To his surprise, he was ranked tenth.
Fu Jing didn’t even glance at the “resurrected” Wang Bupoid. Used to his antics, he lay back down, closing his eyes.
But Wang Bupo , glowing phone in hand, excitedly shook his shoulder: “Yo, Fu Jing! I’ve got prize money!”
The leaderboard had just updated, and 2,000 yuan had already been credited automatically.
“What are you freaking out about now?”
Fu Jing kept a stern face as he reached for the bedside switch, turning on the light.
Then his phone dinged. Wang Bupo raised an eyebrow, gesturing for him to check the message:
[Bu’er Bu’er]: [WeChat red packet] Congratulations! Winner winner, chicken dinner!
Fu Jing eyed him suspiciously, then opened the red packet.
“The money I borrowed from you here’s your repayment.”
Wang Bupo lay back, grinning, patting Fu Jing on the chest: “All good, go sleep.”
He closed his eyes with a satisfied smile.
Fu Jing didn’t understand his antics, but at least the money had been repaid. He had even planned to take a part-time job if Wang Bupo hadn’t returned the money, knowing the remaining balance wouldn’t last the week.
The next afternoon.
Fu Jing began to regret coming along with Wang Bupoid. The guy had promised a big meal but at every restaurant in the mall, it was either “too expensive” or “not good enough.” After circling almost the entire mall, they still hadn’t found a place to eat.
Then Wang Bupoid spotted a restaurant with flower arrangements outside, a red carpet, and petals scattered on the ground it was clearly a grand opening.
Sure enough, the hostess greeted another couple enthusiastically: “Welcome to First Love Couples Restaurant! Grand opening today! Couples get a discount!”
The shy couple entered happily.
Fu Jing looked at Wang Bupoid, who froze at the mention of a discount, and hesitated: “You’re not…”
Wang Bupo paused for a second, then whispered to him: “What if we pretend to be a couple?”
Fu Jing turned away, reluctant.
Wang Bupoid tugged at him: “Pretend only. Nothing weird. What’s the big deal?”
He grabbed Fu Jing’s arm firmly and led him to the restaurant. The hostess immediately came forward with a warm welcome.
“What’s the discount?” Wang Bupo asked, smiling sheepishly.
“Follow me,” the hostess said, leading them to a spinning wheel.
“Spin the wheel. Complete the task it lands on to get a discount!”
The wheel read:
- Compliment each other, gaze deeply, hug, princess carry—20% off
- Kiss cheek, kiss forehead, kiss hand—30% off
- Kiss lips, kiss Adam’s apple—40% off
- French kiss for one minute—50% off
They stared at the wheel in silence.
“Who’s spinning?” the beta server girl asked, eyes sparkling.
Fu Jing frowned. Wang Bupoid laughed nervously, heart racing. But he had to try.
“Spin it, we could get 20–30% off, still good,” he whispered in Fu Jing’s ear.
“Alright, I’ll spin,” Wang Bupoid said.
But fate wasn’t kind.
“Congratulations! You got 50% off!”
Wang Bupo looked as if he’d been struck by lightning. Fu Jing’s face went dark.
He wanted to back out, but the other couples and even some same-s3x couples were watching, eyes full of envy:
“50%! They’re lucky!”
“Let’s get 50% too, babe!”
“Why haven’t they kissed yet?”
“Probably shy.”
“Me too, I want a kiss!”
“Hmph, annoying!”
They couldn’t leave, couldn’t stay. Might as well bite the bullet.
Wang Bupo grabbed Fu Jing’s collar and leaned in, eyes closed, preparing for heroic sacrifice.
“You…” Fu Jing froze, horrified as Wang Bupoid’s face loomed close.
A warm touch met him but just a touch.
The hostess reminded them: “French kiss! Use your tongue.”
Wang Bupo nervously stuck his tongue out. Fu Jing clenched his jaw.
Wang Bupo thought: 50%.
He pinched Fu Jing’s waist; Fu Jing groaned, opened his mouth slightly, and their tongues met.
Instantly, tingles ran up their spines.
“Congratulations, 50% off!”
They pulled away, pretending nothing happened but one ear, one neck was flushed red.
They instinctively wiped their mouths, noticing the hostess excitedly restraining herself.
Seated, Wang Bupo offered Fu Jing a tissue, then took one for himself.
Fu Jing ignored him and went to the restroom.
Wang Bupo muttered: “What a guy… making it look like I’m taking advantage of him…”
Across the table, couples chatted happily; their table remained silent.
Wang Bupo tried to break the tension: “Can you believe 99 yuan gets this much? And the beef’s actually good. Not bad, right?”
Fu Jing stayed stone-faced, refusing to look at him.
They finished the meal in silence.
Outside, Wang Bupo followed Fu Jing, who walked briskly ahead.
“Still mad? It’s just a one-minute French kiss. Didn’t cost a thing and we got half-off. Wait.” He noticed Fu Jing’s stiff reaction and asked in surprise: “That… was your first kiss?”
Fu Jing paused, then strode forward again.
Wang Bupo caught up, nudging his arm jokingly: “No way… Fu Shao, never had a girlfriend? So innocent?”
Fu Jing stopped, turning to look at him: “Have you?”
“Of course I have,” Wang Bupoid said proudly, arms crossed, chin up.
His eyes gleamed: See? I’m experienced, little one.
“Impressive.”
Fu Jing sneered, icy as frost, leaning in, breath on Wang Bupo face: “You call yourself straight, yet you can go that far with me?”
“I…” Wang Bupo froze. He’d only dated one girl, back in school, and never beyond holding hands or light kissing. He’d broken up because dating wasted time for gaming.
“No words?” Fu Jing smirked darkly. “Your straight-man act is just an excuse. I bet you’ve been scheming on me all along.”
“I no! It was for the discount!” Wang Bupoid hurried to explain.
“Then don’t bother me,” Fu Jing said coldly, walking off without looking back.
Damn! I paid for the meal, and he still gave me attitude… Hmph!
