- Chapter 6 - Huo Yan appears at the wedding in the palace
Even though there is a royal decree pressing down, getting married from a mourning hall is still somewhat inauspicious. Unfortunately, after decades, this rare opportunity for a prestigious family marriage leaves these official matchmakers no choice but to brace themselves.
As expected, after waiting for a long time in the cold wind outside, the gates of the Guo Guo Mansion slowly opened. General Cheng Haojin of Anxi coldly tossed out, “If you don’t receive the person in half an hour, you won’t need to return to the Ministry of Rites!”
The eight matchmakers exchanged looks, their faces turning pale. This forced marriage wasn’t going to work, and yet they were being put in this situation. How could a once noble county princess end up in such a predicament?
After anxiously waiting for half an hour, a delicate-looking young boy opened the mansion door. The matchmakers immediately put on cheerful smiles to greet the bride, only to be startled to discover that the bride’s embroidery chamber was not far from the mourning hall, and the inside was completely draped in white with no signs of joy whatsoever.
Upon seeing the bride, several of them couldn’t help but feel sorrowful. This was hardly a bride. Without any makeup, her pale face was marked by swollen eyes that evoked pity, and upon closer inspection, her black eyes lacked any spark of life.
The matchmakers felt an internal chill and broke into a cold sweat.
“Country princess, please get ready!” After a discussion, one matchmaker reluctantly urged the bride.
Looking into the mirror adorned with phoenixes that signify auspiciousness, Yunxi’s tears suddenly started to fall. “Marrying during the mourning period is indeed unfilial to Lord Jin. How can I face the spirit with this makeup?” After saying this, she buried her face on the table and sobbed uncontrollably, and no one could console her.
At this moment, however, Yunxi felt a twinge of satisfaction in her heart, thinking, “Cheng Haojin, how furious will you be when you see me like this?”
Meanwhile, outside the residence, chaos erupted as the wedding procession became disorganized.
“General, although Elder Shen entrusted Princess Yunxi to you before his death, you don’t have to marry her!” The strategist, Old Lu, stroked his white beard anxiously and said, “Look, Princess Yunxi is still young, with such a childlike temperament. If she causes too much trouble, it will disturb the household and become a burden!”
“Exactly, exactly!” The round-faced Huwawa nodded vigorously, “Women should be obedient.” His Mandarin wasn’t very fluent, and he tended to say a few words at a time.
“Are you all trying to defy this general’s orders? Did you send a blood letter?” Cheng Haojin said dismissively, “If the little girl wants to make a scene, let her. I’m eager to see how much trouble she can stir up!”
“Well…” Old Lu sighed, stroking his white beard faster and faster.
“General, the auspicious hour has already been missed! If we keep waiting like this, it will definitely delay the great auspice!” Vice Commander Jiang Sha stomped his foot anxiously, thinking to himself that if the Princess Yunxi wanted to marry, then let her; if not, then don’t. It’s wasting everyone’s time with this dragging!
Cheng Haojin maintained a calm facade, his gaze fixed on the entrance of the Protectorate Mansion. “No rush, the great auspice for the East Chen Palace won’t be delayed!”
Jiang Sha still felt uneasy, “But…”
Riding towards us was a group of rich young gentlemen from the capital, with the leader being the Minister of War, Huo Yan.
“General Cheng!” Huo Yan clasped his fists in salute, his warm eyes looking at Cheng Haojin and the others, “Are you truly intending to marry Sister Yunxi?”
Huo Yan’s mother, Princess Qinglan, is the elder sister of the current emperor, and she is also the half-sister of Princess Chifeng. Additionally, his father is a Right Chancellor, and at a young age, he was granted the title of a county duke, allowing him to call Yunxi County Princess “sister.”
Cheng Haojin casually responded to them, “As it is the emperor’s decree, it must be true!”
The young gentlemen were all dissatisfied and seemed ready to argue their points.
Huo Yan glanced back from his horse, and the crowd quieted down considerably.
Cheng Haojin acted as if he were completely unaware and asked Huo Yan, “You all have come for…”
Before Huo Yan could speak, Tie Heng had already stepped forward to question him, “The marriage between Sister Yunxi and Ayu was arranged by the late Empress Dowager; how can it simply change? You must have used some underhanded tactics!”
This man is the nephew of the Empress. Cheng Haojin was about to speak, but someone had already interrupted.
