- Chapter 7 - The weak defeated the strong, confirming forced marriage
Before the words could finish, they were interrupted by the loud sounds of horse hooves and voices nearby.
Riding towards them were a group of noble friends from prominent families in the capital, and leading them was Huo Yan, the son of the Minister of War.
“General Cheng!” Huo Yan clasped his fists in salute, his gentle eyes gazing at Cheng Hao and the others, “Are you truly going to marry Sister Yunxi?”
Huo Yan’s mother, Qinglan, is the elder sister of the current emperor and also the half-sister of the Red Phoenix lady. Additionally, his father is the Prime Minister, and he was granted the title of county lord at a young age, allowing him to address Yunxi County Princess as his sister.
Cheng Hao casually looked at them and replied, “The Emperor’s decree is here, so it is indeed true!”
The group of young nobles expressed their dissatisfaction, showing intentions to step forward and argue.
Huo Yan glanced back from his horse, and the group of young nobles quieted down considerably.
Pretending not to notice, Cheng Hao asked Huo Yan, “What brings you all here…”
Not waiting for Huo Yan to respond, Tie Heng stepped forward and reproached, “Sister Yunxi’s marriage with A Yu was arranged by the late Empress Dowager; how can it be changed just like that? You must have used some means!”
This young man is the nephew of the Empress. Before Cheng Hao could speak, he was already interrupted.
Aside from Shen Yunxi, she had never suffered such a big loss before. At that moment, after being enraged by Tieheng, she no longer had a good expression on her face.
Taking advantage of the moment, Princess Yunhuang pounced on Tieheng. He was busy boasting about his martial arts skills with his direct younger brother, Huo Da, and in a moment of inattention, he was knocked off his horse by Princess Yunhuang.
The two of them tumbled together in a disheveled heap, and it’s needless to say how embarrassing it was; everyone else was left dumbfounded.
Huo Yan and Huo Da exchanged glances, knowing that this marriage was something they had to deal with, whether they wanted to or not.
Cheng Haojin waved his hand, and Hu Wa brought a few brothers to pull Princess Yunhuang and Tieheng apart.
Mu Li observed the chaotic scene and quietly shielded Yunxi behind him.
Princess Yunhuang didn’t want Cheng Haojin to be among the crowd; perhaps he had also witnessed the recent commotion and, having seen enough, sent someone to bring things to an end.”
News among the powerful in the capital spread that Princess Yunhuang had sought the affection of Cheng Haojin in vain. Two years ago, when she first met Cheng Haojin, Princess Yunhuang boldly declared that among all the men in the world, only Cheng Haojin was worthy of her, claiming that she would make him willingly become her husband.
Various noble maidens laughed at her both openly and secretly, especially since, coming from a humble background, Cheng Haojin not only showed no interest in climbing the social ladder but had never acknowledged Princess Yunhuang even once.
This matter was, in fact, a complete misunderstanding; Princess Yunhuang had seen Cheng Haojin only a handful of times. Aside from the truth being too trivial to mention to outsiders, more so was the fact that these pampered noble maidens needed engaging topics to alleviate their dull lives.
Now that Cheng Haojin was commanded to marry Shen Yunxi, Princess Yunhuang truly couldn’t believe what Shen Yunxi had written in her letter, prompting her to come and see for herself, while casually adding to Tie Heng’s frustration!
Want to marry her? No way!
“Cheng Haojin!” Princess Yunhuang didn’t even glance at Tie Heng, who was injured, but stared directly at Cheng Haojin.
Cheng Haojin did not dismount; he clasped his hands in salute, “What does the princess command?”
“Did you really personally request this marriage edict?” Princess Yunhuang asked from her elevated position.
“Yes.” At that moment, Cheng Haojin understood everything; Shen Yunxi intended to use Princess Yunhuang’s voice to solidify the claim of him forcibly marrying her.
Changing the decree, allowing a wedding during the mourning period, the emperor certainly wouldn’t be the type to act against principles of faithfulness; let the unscrupulous bear the weight of their actions.
Princess Yunhuang tightened her grip on the whip, utterly disappointed, gazing intensely at him; how could someone of Shen Yunxi’s high stature marry someone like this!
“One day, you will pay the price for what you have done today! Cheng Haojin, I wish you and my cousin Yunxi happiness and harmony for a lifetime! See you tomorrow at Chang Le Hall!”
Cheng Haojin hardly took her words to heart, merely responding dismissively, “Understood.”
Princess Yunhuang gritted her teeth, turned, and mounted her horse, riding off in a whirlwind back to the palace.
Yun Xi hidden behind the door, couldn’t hear everything clearly, she could still imagine Yun Huang’s anger. People only rely on the strong to bully the weak, but they don’t know that sometimes the weak can defeat the strong, let alone get twice the result with half the effort.
