- Chapter 8 - Pegasus welcomes the bride and tests each other
Shen Fang looked at Yun Xi, preparing to help her onto the wedding carriage.
However, Cheng Haojin intervened, sweeping Yun Xi off her feet and onto the horse’s back.
“Impudent! What are you doing?!” Yun Xi exclaimed, both shocked and angry, and in front of so many people, she felt she couldn’t struggle too much.
Cheng Haojin ignored the various curious gazes from the crowd, lowering his voice in a provocative manner next to Yun Xi’s ear, “Since the country princess loves to act, I’ll help you put on an even more thorough performance.”
Yun Xi was stunned for a moment, and Cheng Haojin took the opportunity to tighten his grip around her delicate waist, bringing the two of them even closer together.
“Is it only for Feng Zhiwu ?” His gaze was deep, as he caressed Yun Xi’s flushed face beneath the red veil.
Tears welled up in Yunxi’s eyes. Did he… actually guess this arrangement?
It seems that Cheng Haojin also needed this marriage to stabilize the hearts of the troops and to show loyalty to the Emperror.
Yunxi grabbed his lapel, her eyes filled with anger. “So… what if it is? Is the general willing to become the focus of everyone’s scorn?”
“… You must help your husband…” Cheng Haojin leaned in closely, almost touching Yunxi’s earlobe, his warm breath making her cheeks flush, causing her to turn her head away.
In doing so, she missed Cheng Haojin’s quiet whisper—”How do you know I’m not willingly involved?”
Cheng Haojin scanned the surroundings, suddenly lifting Yunxi’s veil and letting it flutter in the wind. “If we sit in the bridal sedan, we might delay the auspicious time. Zimo and the county magistrate will go first; you all follow!”
Yunxi only had time to give a reassuring glance at Shen Fang, not even looking at the gate of the Duke of Protecting the Nation, before she was whisked away by Cheng Haojin’s whip, quickly leaving the stunned crowd behind.
The wind howled past her ears as the horses galloped swiftly.
Yunxi was very close to Cheng Haojin, a sort of intimacy she had never experienced with Feng Zhiwu.
Cheng Haojin had recently groomed himself; he no longer looked disheveled but instead sported a handsome, scholarly face with sharp brows and bright eyes. Aside from a hint of hostility in his demeanor, he exuded a certain gentility.
Their garments were tightly intertwined, looking exceptionally intimate. Yunxi felt secretly annoyed at herself for her scrutiny and thoughts. “How did you see through my act?”
There were no apparent flaws! Although Yunxi had wanted to inform Cheng Haojin in advance, both to test the waters and because she feared he wouldn’t perform well enough, leading the old men to suspect them.
Seeing Yunxi’s fox-like cunning gaze, Cheng Haojin tightened his embrace even more.
With such poor acting, all her thoughts were written in those glistening eyes of hers, yet she was still considering how to set out a grand scheme. She may have been young, but she was cautious.
How she hoped that one day, you and I could be honest with each other!
