Surprise! My Cohabiting Sister is Actually My Fiancée - Chapter 13
Perhaps stunned by Jian Suixin’s profound remarks, the System fell silent.
Jun Xizhi stopped teasing her, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Alright, let’s go eat.”
Seeing Jun Xizhi’s smile return, Jian Suixin finally breathed a sigh of relief, selectively forgetting the earlier awkwardness.
Never mind the process, as long as the outcome is good.
After this little episode, Jun Xizhi’s expression visibly lightened. Over dinner, she told Jian Suixin that she had found a job.
Jian Suixin naturally congratulated her, but couldn’t help feeling puzzled. Finding a job should be good news, so why does she seem so down?
It’s her personal matter, though, so I shouldn’t pry. She quickly changed the subject.
Both of them had successfully found jobs and were gradually settling into a routine.
At least, that’s how it seemed to Jian Suixin.
Jian Suixin’s job offered weekends off. After working five days, she welcomed her first weekend off since starting work. On Saturday, their little home received a visitor.
The assistant had arrived.
Her main purpose was to discuss the latest developments with Jun Xizhi in person and get an update on her boss’s current living situation.
Jian Suixin paid particular attention to her roommate, who had greeted the boss with a hug and called her “Elder Sister” upon their first meeting.
The assistant secretly kept her guard up around Jian Suixin, but Jian Suixin remained oblivious to this wariness.
They had only met twice, and Jian Suixin’s only impression was that the assistant took great care of Jun Xizhi.
One morning, Jian Suixin went out on an errand. When she returned, she found the assistant had arrived and greeted her.
It was nearly eleven o’clock, too late to cook. Jian Suixin suggested, “It’s getting late. Let’s go out to eat.”
Neither the assistant nor Jun Xizhi objected, and the three of them left.
The restaurant had just opened a few days prior. Jian Suixin had dined there with colleagues and enthusiastically recommended several dishes she had enjoyed.
As they settled at the table and the food arrived, the three began to eat and chat.
Jian Suixin maintained a natural and generous demeanor, engaging Jun Xizhi in conversation while also including the assistant. Jun Xizhi, in turn, acted as usual, reciprocating Jian Suixin’s interactions.
Only the assistant seemed to hold her breath, her gaze repeatedly darting to Jian Suixin’s face with evident disapproval.
This hostility seemed both inexplicable and unwarranted.
Jian Suixin had no particular opinion of the assistant, but she couldn’t help but notice the assistant’s frequent, pointed glances.
When the assistant surreptitiously glanced at Jian Suixin for what felt like the hundredth time, two pairs of eyes simultaneously turned to meet her gaze.
One pair belonged to Jian Suixin, filled with genuine confusion. The other pair belonged to Jun Xizhi, her expression carrying a clear warning.
The assistant: …
Jun Xizhi frowned slightly, but refrained from speaking directly in front of Jian Suixin. She raised an eyebrow at the assistant, silently asking, “What’s wrong?”
The assistant dared not answer aloud, thinking to herself, Am I really being that obvious?
She forced a smile at Jun Xizhi, picked up her cup, and lowered her head to take a sip of water, only to hiss in pain as the hot liquid burned her tongue.
Unable to explain herself, the assistant was saved by the arrival of the waiter with the dishes.
She quickly changed the subject: “Come on, let’s eat first.”
Having grown accustomed to caring for her “teacher” at home, Jian Suixin instinctively served Jun Xizhi a portion of food as soon as the dishes were placed on the table. “Elder Sister, try this! It’s delicious.”
“Alright,” Jun Xizhi replied, picking up a bite with her chopsticks.
“Is it good?” Jian Suixin asked, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
“It’s delicious,” Jun Xizhi replied with a smile.
“If you like it, eat more!” Jian Suixin beamed with delight. “Come on, try this next…”
Watching the two women chat and laugh, the assistant silently ate a mouthful of food. Though the dishes were delicious, they tasted like wax in her mouth.
Look at this! she thought. Unsolicited kindness always has ulterior motives. She’s definitely plotting something against the boss!
The assistant felt a pang of heartache, remembering how her boss had devoted the past twenty-odd years entirely to her career, never once dating, only to be bewitched by this little vixen.
Despite these thoughts, the assistant couldn’t find a way to interrupt. The two women seemed to radiate a natural aura of exclusion, making her feel like an outsider.
She sat beside them, forced to watch them enjoy their meal.
A cheerful atmosphere at the table, yet one person was heartbroken.
The assistant ate silently, her eyes constantly darting to the other side of the table, observing Jian Suixin’s every move.
When the final dish, sweet and sour carp, arrived, the assistant’s eyes lit up.
An opportunity!
“Elder Sister, this is the restaurant’s signature dish—sweet and sour carp. The fish is incredibly tender and delicious. You have to try it!”
The assistant watched impassively as Jian Suixin picked up a piece of fish and placed it on Jun Xizhi’s plate. Suddenly, she shouted, “Stop!”
Jian Suixin froze, her chopsticks suspended in mid-air. “Wh-what’s wrong?”
The assistant smirked triumphantly. Gotcha! she thought. The boss hates fish—I’ve never seen her eat it. I knew it! They’ve only known each other a few days. She’s just being polite because they’re not close yet.
The assistant puffed out her chest, eager to reveal her exclusive intel on the boss. “Suixin, you haven’t known Sister Zhi long, so you might not realize—she hates fish.”
Before Jian Suixin could respond, Jun Xizhi spoke first. “Who said that?”
The assistant looked bewildered, confusion clouding her eyes. “Sister Zhi, don’t you…?”
Before she could finish, Jun Xizhi lowered her head slightly and, without even switching hands, ate the piece of fish from Jian Suixin’s chopsticks.
She chewed slowly and deliberately, her movements natural as she gently guided Jian Suixin’s hand to retract the chopsticks.
“I can like it,” she said softly.
The assistant: ……
Seeing Jun Xizhi had eaten it, Jian Suixin asked, “Elder Sister, how was it?”
Jun Xizhi smiled and nodded. “Delicious. Very fresh.”
Jian Suixin beamed, pleased that Jun Xizhi enjoyed it. After tending to her sister, she turned to the assistant. “What were you saying earlier?”
The assistant’s lips twitched. “Didn’t you hear me?”
Jian Suixin looked apologetic, gesturing toward the departing waiter. “The waiter came to ask about the main course. I was talking to her and didn’t hear you. Sorry.”
She then looked at the assistant with genuine sincerity. “What did you want to tell me? Could you repeat it?”
