Surprise! My Cohabiting Sister is Actually My Fiancée - Chapter 15
“What are you two chatting about, looking so cheerful?”
The voice was so familiar that Jian Suixin didn’t even need to turn around to know who it was.
Jian Suixin’s body stiffened. Even though she hadn’t done anything wrong, she felt inexplicably guilty, as if she’d been caught gossiping behind someone’s back.
The two women turned to see Jun Xizhi standing behind them, likely curious about why they were lurking outside instead of going inside.
Jian Suixin’s smile felt forced, and her gaze instinctively drifted elsewhere. “Oh, nothing much. Just catching up on some gossip.”
“What kind of gossip?”
Jian Suixin instinctively knew Jun Xizhi wouldn’t be interested. Chatting about such things with Ying Tao was fine, but discussing gossip with her Elder Sister felt inappropriate.
She brushed it off casually. “Nothing important. Just chatting.”
Jun Xizhi indeed showed little interest. Sensing Jian Suixin’s reluctance, she didn’t press further. “You two carry on. I’ll head back inside.”
Jian Suixin nodded. “Okay, I’ll be in soon.”
Unbeknownst to Jun Xizhi, she had just narrowly avoided hearing gossip about herself.
After Jun Xizhi left, the remaining two resumed their conversation. Jian Suixin urged, “Continue, continue! Where did we leave off?”
Ying Tao was just enjoying the gossip and naturally didn’t know the specifics. “I wouldn’t know. I just overheard some colleagues gossiping.”
She shook her head, visibly indignant. “She’s so young, just back from abroad, and already facing something like this? Those old geezers are clearly bullying her!”
Jian Suixin frowned in thought. She didn’t believe the woman had simply disappeared; temporarily laying low to avoid the storm seemed more likely.
She glanced at Ying Tao, puzzled. “Why are you so angry? You have nothing to do with them.”
Ying Tao found her the stranger one. “How can you not care about such juicy gossip?”
Jian Suixin shrugged. “Why should I? She’s not exactly a big shot.”
“The Eldest Miss of the Jun Family? Isn’t that a big deal? They’ve been hyping her up like she’s some kind of goddess!”
Jian Suixin casually replied, “Not really. That Eldest Miss almost married me, you know.”
The System immediately issued a warning: “Host! Danger! Danger!”
Jian Suixin snapped back to reality. What had been a mild surprise was now a full-blown panic thanks to the System’s alarm.
Damn, I let that slip. Jian Suixin’s heart leaped. She turned to Ying Tao, her voice strained. “I didn’t mean it like that! I meant…”
Before Jian Suixin could explain, Ying Tao’s pitying gaze stopped her cold. “Xin Xin, you poor thing! You must be terrified of being poor again, right? Have you forgotten I covered your rent when you first moved in? How could you even say something like that? Did you have a nightmare about it?”
Jian Suixin: ……
Jian Suixin nearly choked on her own breath. She took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, and forced a smile. “Yeah… I did have a nightmare.”
Ying Tao’s expression softened further, and she reached out to pat the head of the woman who towered over her by half a head. “It’s okay, I don’t blame you. I heard the Eldest Miss of the Jun Family is incredibly beautiful and rich. So many girls want to be with her, the line stretches all the way to Paris!”
Jian Suixin immediately bristled at the mention of her arranged marriage partner. “Beautiful? Where did you hear that? That’s fake news.”
Ying Tao, who had only heard rumors, hesitated. “Fake news? But I heard she’s stunningly beautiful! People were praising her looks to the heavens!”
“That’s just some made-up story someone told you to trick you. A friend of mine met her and said she’s not pretty at all, and her temper is terrible. She loves bossing people around, and everyone who’s met her is afraid of her.”
Ying Tao was deeply disappointed. “Really?”
“Of course. My friend never lies.”
Ying Tao still refused to give up hope. “If she’s so awful, why do you still want to marry her?”
The words “It’s not what I want; my family is forcing me” nearly slipped out.
Fortunately, the System warned her in time, allowing Jian Suixin to barely retract the statement.
“I… I used to be young and foolish and liked her. But after learning her true nature, I lost interest,” Jian Suixin said.
Ying Tao’s hopes shattered again. “Is she really not pretty? And her temper is terrible?”
Having never met the woman in person, Jian Suixin hesitated to give a definitive answer. “Well, she’s probably not ugly, but her temper is definitely… not good.”
Simultaneously, she reasoned to herself: If her temper were good, why would she keep canceling our dates before the engagement? She clearly isn’t someone easy to get along with.
Ying Tao’s spirits lifted slightly. “See? You’ve never even met her! How could you possibly know what she looks like or what her personality is like? Everything you said earlier was just hearsay, with no real basis.”
The more you say, the more mistakes you make. Jian Suixin murmured a few acknowledgments and fell silent.
Ying Tao continued to chatter, clearly fascinated by this high-society drama. “Where do you think she went? Could she really have disappeared?”
“I hope she wasn’t harmed by those villains.”
Jian Suixin shook her head. “No way. If something had really happened, there’d be news about it.”
“Maybe she’s hiding somewhere, biding her time, planning a comeback?” Ying Tao’s gaze drifted to Jian Suixin, and she winked. “Maybe she’s even found her way here.”
Jian Suixin immediately took a step back, creating distance to make her position clear. “Don’t get any ideas. I already have an Elder Sister. There’s no room for a third person.”
Ying Tao’s disappointment was palpable, but then she brightened again. “Hey, Xin Xin, your roommate’s Elder Sister is named Jun! Could it be…?”
When Jian Suixin first learned that her elder sister’s surname was Jun, she couldn’t help but harbor suspicions. However, the System had completely dismissed them.
In stark contrast to Ying Tao’s excitement, Jian Suixin showed little interest. “Don’t get your hopes up,” she said. “The Eldest Miss of the Jun Family probably lives in a presidential suite and rents it by the year. Why would she come here to rent a place and endure such hardship? Does she have nothing better to do?”
“You make a good point,” Ying Tao sighed, her enthusiasm extinguished. “Let’s not dwell on this. I’m going back to cook.”
Jian Suixin watched her retreating figure, inwardly marveling, “Thank goodness I have you, Tong’er. With your up-to-date and comprehensive information, I don’t have to worry about taking any detours.”
The System immediately chimed in, sounding rather guilty, “Mhm, mhm, just trust me.”
At that moment, Jian Suixin had no idea that the System’s “guidance” was about to send her journey veering toward the Atlantic Ocean.
With another sigh, Jian Suixin prepared to head home. Just as she opened the door, she remembered something. “Wait, did I forget something?”
Three seconds later, a shout erupted from a resident’s home in the neighborhood: “Elder Sister, wait for me! I’m going to buy groceries and start cooking right away!”
After working for a while, Jian Suixin settled into a regular nine-to-five routine. With plenty of free time, she even developed several side hustles—distributing flyers and setting up a street stall to earn extra income.
The System marveled at her adaptability: “As expected of the protagonist. I’m impressed.”
Meanwhile, Huhu Entertainment, the obscure agency Jian Suixin had signed with, finally arranged her first job: a commercial livestream scheduled for that evening.
The brand was for cosmetics—not a major name, but known for its quality and consistently positive reputation.
In contrast to Jian Suixin’s structured life, Jun Xizhi often worked overtime, her schedule packed with business commitments.
Knowing Jun Xizhi would be working late on the day of the livestream, Jian Suixin decided not to mention it, allowing her to focus on her work.
After dinner, Jian Suixin applied simple makeup, changed into her outfit, and entered the livestream room ten minutes early to wait.
To ensure a good turnout and avoid the awkwardness of a sparsely attended broadcast, the agency had hired a Water Army in advance.
As soon as Jian Suixin entered the livestream room, she saw several thousand viewers online, the chat flooded with her name.
The inexperienced Jian Suixin was overwhelmed by the scene: “I’m going to be famous!”
It was her first time livestreaming in front of so many people, and she felt a bit nervous. After composing herself, she greeted the audience.
Once the livestream started, Jian Suixin followed her prepared script to introduce the products.
She quickly realized that the Water Army accounts were automated, spamming the chat with identical messages. Fortunately, some real viewers joined and even chatted, preventing the stream from becoming too awkward.
About twenty minutes into the livestream, as Jian Suixin was getting into her groove, a WeChat message suddenly popped up on her screen.
Elder Sister : Want to grab some late-night snacks?
Jian Suixin’s eyes lit up at the contact name, and she immediately replied.
Jian Suoyou : But it’s so late! Won’t we gain weight?
Elder Sister : We will. Then let’s skip it.
Jian Suoyou : But I really want some… (confused.jpg)
Elder Sister : Hmm, what should we do then?
Jian Suoyou : Hmm, what should we do then?
Elder Sister : This will be our last indulgence this week. We’ll keep each other in check.
Jian Suoyou : Okay! (agreement.jpg) (heart.jpg)
After replying, Jian Suixin remembered she was still livestreaming and quickly returned to the broadcast.
As soon as she entered the room, she noticed a flurry of new comments from viewers:
What’s going on? Why did she suddenly stop talking?
I’m reporting the streamer for slacking off!
What was the streamer doing just now? Why did she suddenly go silent? She can’t just coast by because she’s pretty!
She was staring at the screen. Probably replying to messages.
Tsk, tsk, tsk. Definitely chatting with her boyfriend! Look at how happy she is—beaming like a spring breeze, smiling like a flower, her face flushed red.
What were you talking about, streamer? Can you share some details? I love eating dog food (doge)!
Jian Suixin glanced at the comments, feeling a bit embarrassed. She instinctively touched her face—was her smile really that obvious?
The System quoted Ying Tao’s famous line: “Not obvious at all. Just your face about to crack from smiling too hard.”
Jian Suixin: ……
Deliberately ignoring the comments, Jian Suixin straightened her posture and adopted a serious demeanor. “Let’s continue.”
Although sales hadn’t been stellar, there hadn’t been any major issues either.
Midway through the broadcast, Jian Suixin found her rhythm, speaking with increasing enthusiasm. Suddenly, a knock echoed at the door, followed by the door swinging open.
Jian Suixin was startled. The only person who would come at this hour was Jun Xizhi.
But Jun Xizhi usually worked overtime until after 9 PM. Why was she here so early today?
Probably wanting to surprise her, Jun Xizhi walked straight to Jian Suixin’s side as soon as she entered. Before Jian Suixin could react, Jun Xizhi held out a paper bag filled with an enticing aroma. “Late-night snack is here.”
At the same moment, half of Jun Xizhi’s face appeared on the livestream screen.
Who’s this? The streamer’s girlfriend?! Her voice is so lovely!
OMG, that nose, those lips! It’s true—all the beautiful women end up together! T_T
The moment Jun Xizhi appeared, Jian Suixin’s reflexes kicked in. She immediately forgot about the livestream and turned to Jun Xizhi. “It smells amazing.”
“Freshly made sushi. Eat up,” Jun Xizhi said, opening the box and handing it to Jian Suixin.
Jian Suixin, who was holding products she was trying to sell, didn’t hesitate. Smiling sweetly, she said, “My hands are full. Elder Sister, could you feed me?”
Jun Xizhi’s eyes crinkled with amusement as she picked up a piece of sushi and held it to Jian Suixin’s lips. “This is the last time this week.”
Jian Suixin didn’t understand. “The last time for what? The last time you’ll feed me?”
Jun Xizhi chuckled and tapped Jian Suixin’s head playfully, scolding, “Last midnight snack.”
Then she fed her another one.
Jian Suixin winced at the tap but nodded obediently. “Okay.”
“Is it good?” Jun Xizhi asked.
Jian Suixin replied earnestly, “Everything Elder Sister buys is delicious.”
One for you, one for me, and before they knew it, half the box was gone.
“Don’t eat too much at night,” Jun Xizhi said. “We’ll save the rest for tomorrow.”
Jian Suixin licked her lips, still wanting more. Clutching the box of cosmetics in one hand, she struggled to make a “1” with the other, pleading, “Just one more.”
Jun Xizhi glanced at her with amusement, paused for two seconds, and fed the little glutton again. “Last one.”
Jian Suixin grinned and wrapped her arms around Jun Xizhi’s waist, nuzzling into her embrace. “I knew it! Elder Sister is the best.”
The System finally couldn’t stand it any longer and warned, “Host, haven’t you forgotten something?”
“Huh? Forgotten what?” Jian Suixin was still basking in the joy of sharing the midnight snack, everything else completely forgotten.
Her gaze drifted to her phone, and her smile froze as she saw the surging viewer count and the scrolling barrage of comments in the live stream.
Oh no.
