Surprise! My Cohabiting Sister is Actually My Fiancée - Chapter 18
After chatting with the adorable “driver,” it was time to get down to business.
“Bring me the most recent files,” Jun Xizhi said, settling behind her desk and switching into work mode.
“Boss, when are we going to strike back? Being a big fish in a small pond at the branch office is so boring. Let’s go back and become phoenixes!” The assistant rubbed her hands together, eager for a major showdown.
“Patience. We’ll take it one step at a time. It won’t be long,” Jun Xizhi replied tersely.
“Got it! I trust you, Boss.” The assistant immediately chimed in, though she still felt uneasy about Jun Xizhi’s collaboration with that man.
“He says it’s a partnership, but can we really trust him?” Even with things looking up, the assistant harbored no fondness for the Jun Family—those ruthless sharks who devoured people whole.
“What he says is true. His help makes things much easier,” Jun Xizhi said casually, flipping through the files. “We’re simply each getting what we need.”
“Besides,” Jun Xizhi added, turning a page with a faint rustle, her tone indifferent, “he acts so confident, but he might still end up capsizing in the gutter.”
“You’re not resting this weekend either?”
“No. There’s too much to do right now. We’ll rest when it’s done.”
“Another weekend of overtime?” The assistant frowned. “Even bosses have to grind this hard?”
Jun Xizhi smiled. “I’m not making you work overtime. Why the frown?”
The assistant immediately clarified, “I’m just worried about you getting overworked, Boss!”
Jun Xizhi picked up her coffee cup and took a sip. “Once this busy period is over, things will calm down.”
That evening, Jian Suixin insisted on continuing to provide private transportation the next day. Jun Xizhi replied, “I often leave very early in the morning, which would be inconvenient. Let’s just go home together after work from now on.”
Jian Suixin immediately countered, “That’s no problem at all. I can wake up early with you.”
Jun Xizhi raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure you can manage that?”
Jian Suixin hesitated, then gritted her teeth. “I can.”
Jun Xizhi chuckled, not wanting to force her to wake up so early. “There’s no need,” she said. “Having you pick me up in the evening is already a huge help.”
Hearing this, Jian Suixin didn’t press further. “Alright, I’ll be sure to arrive on time after work.”
“Elder Sister, do you have the weekend off?” Jian Suixin asked.
Jun Xizhi hesitated for a moment. “No, I don’t.”
Jian Suixin was shocked. “Not even one day off?”
Jun Xizhi explained, “I just started working, so there’s a lot to do. I can’t take any breaks yet.”
“Do you get overtime pay?”
Jun Xizhi paused. “Well… not really.”
After all, she was the one paying herself.
Jian Suixin’s anger flared. She slammed her hand on the table and stood up, indignant on Jun Xizhi’s behalf. “What kind of boss is this? You’ve been working for weeks, and you have to work every weekend? That’s utterly inhumane!”
Jun Xizhi’s expression turned somewhat odd at her words. She covered her mouth and coughed lightly, attempting to explain, “It’s not entirely the boss’s fault. There really is just too much work.”
“How can you still defend the boss?” Jian Suixin asked, deeply distressed. “Elder Sister, have you been manipulated by her?”
Jun Xizhi: “…That’s not the case.”
“You work overtime on weekends and often late into the night, and you’re still defending her!” Jian Suixin exclaimed, her voice filled with anguish. “Elder Sister, capitalists are the root of all evil! Don’t try to empathize with them!”
Jun Xizhi paused for a moment. “Is that really what you think?”
“Of course!” Jian Suixin retorted angrily, having already deeply empathized with the working class after just one week of work. “Those vile managers and capitalists only exploit us! This is the sentiment of millions of workers!”
Jun Xizhi’s expression grew subtle. She tried to reason with her, “Actually, there are some good bosses too…”
Jian Suixin vehemently disagreed. “Maybe there are a few, but the vast majority are far from good people. At least, our company’s boss and your company’s boss are definitely not good people.”
Jun Xizhi: ……
The System weakly reminded her, “Um, Jian Jian, your parents are both bosses.”
Jian Suixin: “……Don’t interrupt when you shouldn’t.”
The System protested, “I was just reminding you to respect your parents.”
Jun Xizhi spoke with difficulty, “Our company’s boss… is actually not bad.”
“Seriously, Elder Sister? She’s had you working overtime for weeks straight! How can you say she’s not bad?” Jian Suixin’s eyes widened, completely baffled by Jun Xizhi’s perspective. “You need to understand, you haven’t just been working overtime for weeks—you’ve only been working for a few weeks total!”
Jun Xizhi forced a bitter smile. “I…”
“Look at this morning! That limited-edition Porsche parked in front of your company—it must belong to one of the top executives, right? She drives a Porsche while you ride an electric scooter and still makes you work overtime every day!”
Jun Xizhi, the Porsche owner, felt like she’d taken an arrow to the knee.
Still, she asked, “How do you know it’s a limited edition?”
Jian Suixin, about to slip up again, stammered, “I… I just happened to see it in a magazine once.”
Jian Suixin, fearing Junxi would ask more questions, quickly steered the conversation back on track, tenderly taking Junxi’s hand. “Elder Sister, you need to learn to recognize these things! What kind of good boss makes you work overtime every week without paying you extra?”
Junxi remained silent for a moment, too exhausted to argue. “Mm, okay. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
As Jian Suixin continued her tirade, her heart ached for Junxi. “With such a demanding boss, and you still work so diligently without complaint… you must be terrified of losing this job. It’s just too hard, waaaah.”
System: …
The System had no response.
So, when the assistant came to Junxi’s apartment on the weekend, this was the scene that greeted her:
“Elder Sister, you absolutely must learn to slack off! Don’t become your boss’s overtime machine. Everything they say is just manipulation—don’t believe it! Just do your job properly!”
“Your boss is so inhumane! How can they make you work overtime every day? You said you were supposed to leave at six, but you’re always getting home after nine! And they don’t even let you rest on weekends—you have no time for yourself at all!”
“She’s not taking advantage of you being new and pushing all the work onto you, is she? Elder Sister, you need to learn to stand up for yourself! It’s understandable for newcomers to work a bit harder, but this constant overtime is outrageous.”
The assistant’s lips twitched as she overheard these words. She glanced at the indignant Jian Suixin, then at Jun Xizhi, who was listening intently to the accusations, and hesitated, wondering whether to interrupt.
Jian Suixin continued her tirade: “These bosses these days have absolutely no empathy! They’re desperate to squeeze every last drop of value, every last drop of bl00d and sweat, from their employees.”
“Those evil corporate leaders! They’d make us work 24 hours a day, without a single break! It’s utterly despicable!”
Sweat beaded on the assistant’s forehead. Finally, she couldn’t hold back any longer and blurted out, “Well, actually…”
Before she could finish, Jun Xizhi gave a helpless smile and chimed in, “You’re right. The bosses really are despicable.”
The assistant’s words caught in her throat.
For a moment, the scene left her dazed. Who was their company’s boss again?
After a few seconds of frantic recollection, the assistant remembered: Oh, right, their company’s boss was Jun Xizhi herself.
The assistant didn’t dare make a sound, keeping her eyes downcast and her mind blank. But her boss wasn’t finished. Suddenly, she turned to the assistant and asked, “Xiao Zhang, what do you think? Isn’t your company’s boss particularly detestable?”
