Surprise! My Cohabiting Sister is Actually My Fiancée - Chapter 6
The voice wasn’t loud, but its sudden appearance in the quiet room, so close by, made it impossible to ignore.
Ying Tao froze for a second, her gaze snapping toward the bedroom. She turned back, her eyes wide as saucers, fixed on Jian Suixin. Her expression screamed four words: What’s going on?!
Jian Suixin offered an awkward but polite smile. “It’s all a misunderstanding.”
The room fell silent again, as if the earlier sound had been nothing more than a shared hallucination.
While the room remained still, the two women outside were about to make a scene.
Ying Tao wondered if her ears were playing tricks on her. She had only casually mentioned “someone hiding inside,” never imagining she’d actually stumble upon it. Her entire being recoiled in disbelief. In just one day apart, Jian Suixin had already brought a woman home!
Combining the sounds from inside with the glaring red marks on Jian Suixin’s neck, the evidence was undeniable.
Witnesses and evidence are irrefutable!
Noticing her gaze, Jian Suixin instinctively tugged her collar higher.
To Ying Tao, this gesture only confirmed her guilt.
“Xin Xin, you you you you…” The suddenness and intensity of the revelation threw Ying Tao’s language system into chaos.
“So, you stayed up late last night, didn’t sleep well, and forgot I was coming over today. You slept until 10 AM, only waking up when I knocked. It’s because… because…” She struggled to finish her sentence, her gaze darting toward the bedroom. Her trembling finger pointed at Jian Suixin. “You’re playing the ‘golden cage’ game with me?”
As she spoke, she abruptly took a large step back, her brow furrowed, creating distance between herself and Jian Suixin.
Jian Suixin pressed a hand to her forehead, her expression practically screaming “helplessness.”
She knew this would happen. Once Ying Tao saw it, misunderstanding was inevitable. “Calm down, it’s not what you think…”
“Not what I think? What do you think? The evidence is right here! Are you still trying to deny it?” Ying Tao’s voice rose with each word, as if accusing Jian Suixin.
Her voice unconsciously grew louder. Jian Suixin quickly made a “shush” gesture, glancing at the inner room, worried about waking the person inside. “Keep your voice down.”
Ying Tao pouted but obediently lowered her voice. “Such a sweetheart, always worrying about your precious darling.”
Jian Suixin sighed helplessly and waved her hand, signaling to talk later. She glanced into the bedroom to confirm the person inside was still asleep and hadn’t been disturbed before quietly closing the door.
Ying Tao followed closely behind, her eyes wide with curiosity, trying to peek inside. But Jian Suixin slapped her hand away.
“Don’t snoop.”
The person was wrapped in blankets, revealing only a messy pile of bedding and a small, pale arm.
Jian Suixin swiftly pulled Ying Tao away, settling her on the sofa to explain what had happened that day.
After a moment’s thought, she took a deep breath. “You might not believe what I’m about to say, but it’s all true.”
“Tell me first, and I’ll decide,” Ying Tao replied skeptically.
“I promise everything I say is the truth,” Jian Suixin insisted. “You have to promise to believe me too.”
Knowing Jian Suixin wouldn’t proceed without this assurance, Ying Tao nodded. “Alright, I believe you.”
Jian Suixin briefly recounted how she had followed her GPS down a narrow alley last night, accidentally stumbled upon a robbery, rescued the victim, and cared for them overnight.
“That’s the whole story. Do you believe me?”
Ying Tao pondered for a moment. “I still think she’s your lover. That explanation seems more plausible.”
Jian Suixin: ……
I knew it.
Ying Tao scrutinized Jian Suixin’s expression, which didn’t seem feigned. She remained hesitant. “This is too convenient. It’s like one of those cliché novel openings—hero saves damsel in distress, they fall in love, and it leads to a happy ending.”
Well, this world is basically a novel, Jian Suixin thought. But whether we’ll fall in love and have a happy ending… that’s another story.
If she hadn’t experienced it herself, Jian Suixin wouldn’t have believed it either. Unable to think of another explanation, she could only repeat, “I’m telling the truth. I swear. You promised you’d believe me.”
Ying Tao was torn, biting her lower lip. “I want to believe you, but I can’t lie to my own heart. This is just too ridiculous!”
Since Ying Tao refused to believe her, Jian Suixin tried another approach. She gathered evidence, including the thermometer used last night, the medicine she’d given the woman, and the dirty clothes she’d taken off. After much persuasion, she finally managed to convince Ying Tao.
“Is it really such a coincidence? You’ve actually saved someone’s life and done a good deed,” Cherry said, finally believing her, though her face remained full of astonishment, needing time to process this bizarre reality.
“Yeah, if I hadn’t happened to pass by that day, I don’t even want to think about what might have happened.” The mere thought sent a shiver of lingering fear down her spine.
After giving Ying Taohua time to digest the information, she finally asked, “You’ve explained so much, but you still haven’t answered my original question.”
Jian Suixin looked puzzled. “What was that?”
“The scratches on your neck—how did you get them?” Ying Taohua pressed.
The mention of the scratches instantly flashed certain images from the previous night through Jian Suixin’s mind.
She offered a simple explanation: “I was carrying her back to her room last night, and I lost my grip. She accidentally scratched me.”
Ying Taohua wasn’t so easily fooled. “If you were carrying her, why are the scratches on your neck?”
“It was a bit awkward to hold her. She had her arms around my neck,” Jian Suixin replied.
“But wasn’t she feverish and unconscious?” Ying Taohua persisted.
Jian Suixin: …Why is this woman so annoying?!
Jian Suixin couldn’t continue. Irritated, she snapped, “Why do you care so much? It was just an accident.”
Seeing her flustered and defensive, Ying Tao muttered a few words under her breath but didn’t press further. “Alright, alright, I believe you. You’re innocent.”
With things having progressed this far, there was no point in continuing to pack. Ying Tao had learned everything she needed to know and prepared to leave. “Then you should take care of… take care of her. I won’t disturb you any longer.”
Exhausted from lack of sleep and a busy morning, Jian Suixin didn’t try to stop her. “Thank you for today. I’ll treat you to dinner another time.”
After Ying Tao left, Jian Suixin let out a sigh of relief. The moment she relaxed, fatigue washed over her, leaving her wanting nothing more than to collapse into bed.
Still mindful of the woman in the room, she walked to the bedroom door and gently pushed it open. The woman on the bed remained sound asleep, showing no signs of waking. The blanket lay haphazardly across her body; likely feeling too warm, she had left half an arm exposed. The blanket, which had originally covered part of her face, had been pulled down to her neck, revealing the graceful curve of her neck.
Jian Suixin tiptoed into the room, gently tucked the woman’s arm back under the covers, and took her temperature again. A slight fever remained, but it was no longer a cause for concern.
A smile spread across Jian Suixin’s face, relieved that her all-night efforts hadn’t been in vain.
After tucking the corners of the blanket in, Jian Suixin returned to the living room sofa and collapsed into a deep sleep.
When she opened her eyes again, it was completely dark outside.
The nap had been sound and restful. She groped for her phone to check the time—it was already past nine in the evening.
Jian Suixin stretched languidly as she rose from the sofa. While the sofa couldn’t compare to the comfort of a bed, her energy had finally returned.
After changing into fresh clothes, she got up. Having slept through most of the day without eating, she was now ravenously hungry.
Before fixing herself something to eat, she went to check on the woman in the bedroom.
Worried about waking her if she was still asleep, Jian Suixin gently pushed open the door. She found the woman already awake, struggling to sit up. Her slender arms, pale as moonlight, were braced against the bed, exposed to the air.
Hearing the door open, the woman looked up, her beautiful eyes meeting Jian Suixin’s across the room.
Seeing them again, Jian Suixin couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of those eyes. Though she had seen them before, the woman had been delirious with a high fever, her pupils dilated and unfocused.
Now, her eyes were strikingly bright and alive. Those exquisite peach blossom eyes, their corners tinged with a delicate blush, seemed to hold a hint of deep affection for anyone they gazed upon.
The woman swayed unsteadily, nearly falling off the bed. Jian Suixin quickly stepped forward to steady her. Once she was seated securely, the woman looked up and offered a grateful smile. “Thank you.”
The overwhelming beauty at such close proximity momentarily stunned Jian Suixin, nearly causing her to lose her grip.
Jian Suixin couldn’t resist asking the System, “Do you think she’d give me her contact information?”
The System blurted out instinctively, “What for? Are you already smitten?”
“I just want to make a new friend,” Jian Suixin replied.
“You…”
The System was about to continue its scolding, but as a sophisticated machine programmed for precise calculations and foresight, it suddenly changed the subject. “Do you even remember your future wife’s name?”
