Surviving the Game as a Zombie - Chapter 17
Tang Yu could clearly sense that they weren’t the only three figures running in the darkness. The players lying in ambush here all had the same idea as them—to chase down the Zombie King.
They bypassed the zombie horde, rushed from behind the office building towards the city center, and then stopped before reaching the central plaza.
There were already four or five people standing in the central plaza. Tang Yu pulled Jin Ye and Xiao Li, ducking behind a statue in the shadows.
Under the moonlight, the layout of the central plaza was faintly visible. A massive statue of a goddess stood in the very center of the plaza. At this moment, the four or five people were stopped beneath the goddess statue.
In addition, across the wide plaza, there were about ten other bronze sculptures, each the height of two people. The moonlight was dim, making these dark figures look like unknown monsters.
Behind the goddess statue was a five-story-high Western-style church. The church’s remaining stained-glass windows shimmered with brilliant colors in the faint moonlight.
Tang Yu looked up at the goddess statue. Backlit, she could only see its outer silhouette. Its massive figure looked down upon everything in the plaza, exuding an immense sense of pressure.
This sense of pressure was somewhat unusual. After squinting to examine it carefully, Tang Yu discovered a distinctly deeper shadow on the goddess statue’s bent arm.
“Not good.” The thought had just formed in Tang Yu’s mind when the shadow leaped down, killing the two players directly below it with lightning speed.
Once the two-minute duration passed, the Zombie King’s body had returned to its normal size, and its physical strength was much weaker. However, killing two players by surprise didn’t seem difficult for it.
The remaining three players reacted very quickly, hastily striking out to fight the Zombie King.
The Zombie King, however, leaped again and ran into the church behind it.
The other players who arrived one after another also saw this scene. With a tacit understanding, they charged into the church.
The three of them, Tang Yu included, watched all this from their hiding spot in the dark. Song Lengzhu had said that this mutated Zombie King wouldn’t flee, only attack. In other words, it wasn’t hiding, but luring its enemies deeper.
Only after no more players appeared did Tang Yu drag her companions closer to the side of the church. She had just taken note that about thirty players had caught up, most of them in small teams of two or three.
The optimal survival strategy for these players was to hide in the dark and shoot. After all, they didn’t have the strength to face it head-on like Shen Xu and Brother Hu, but because of this, they had managed to survive until the end.
As expected, laying low was the key to survival.
Tang Yu decided to stick with this survival strategy to the very end. They crept to the base of the church wall and peered into the main hall through the shattered stained-glass windows.
The neatly arranged pews inside the church had been mostly destroyed. At this point, several teams of players had gathered in twos and threes in the center of the church, while others had gone up to the second floor via the stairs on either side.
The situation had now reversed; the players were in the open, and the Zombie King was in the shadows.
Without any warning, a dozen or so zombies suddenly lunged out from the dark corners of the church. These zombies were also extremely agile. They deftly moved through the pews, let out a roar, and opened their mouths to bite.
The sudden attack caused several players to be tackled to the ground, instantly assimilated into new zombies.
Tang Yu was inwardly shocked. These zombies had clearly been lying in wait in the shadows for a long time. Was this also a result of the Zombie King’s control? Perhaps because of its special design, it was quite skilled at deploying troops.
Seeing that the situation was turning bad, some players rushed towards the church exit. Tang Yu stuck her head out and let out a roar, instantly scaring the players back inside.
“There are zombies outside too!” this player cried out, utterly terrified. “The zombie army must be here! What do we do? We’re surrounded!”
“Stop messing around. Be careful or you’ll get your head blown off,” Jin Ye said, helplessly pulling Tang Yu back.
