Surviving the Game as a Zombie - Chapter 19
Thanks to Tang Yu’s alertness, they dodged the Zombie King’s first attack, but the second followed without hesitation, its well-defined claws swiping down at her head. Tang Yu blocked it with her knife. Seeing the Zombie King’s majestic yet ferocious face reveal its sharp fangs, she quickly got to her feet, her heart still pounding with fear.
The Zombie King relentlessly pursued Tang Yu, leaping and pouncing agilely on the small platform, its movements far too nimble for the dead.
Jin Ye and Xiao Li weren’t faring much better. They fired a few shots, but all missed their mark. Worse, the confined space meant they nearly hit one of their own.
After dodging several waves of attacks, Tang Yu couldn’t hold back any longer and yelled, “Didn’t you say it would get weaker after going berserk? Jin Ye, you lied to me!”
“It’s because we’re too weak! Our bodies reverted to their initial state after our points were reset. And your body was already in its initial state to begin with!” Jin Ye shot back as she fought and retreated.
Realizing they couldn’t win, Tang Yu tried to communicate with the Zombie King. “Big brother, big brother, we didn’t come here to kill you! We came to pledge our allegiance to you.”
The Zombie King showed no reaction, its lethal attacks continuing unabated.
“It’s completely impossible to communicate!” Tang Yu wailed. With no more room to retreat in the cramped space, she abruptly turned and lunged at the Zombie King.
No more dodging. If you bite me, I’ll bite you back!
However, this move actually caused the Zombie King to hesitate for a moment.
Huh? Tang Yu paused for a moment, then bared her white teeth, raised her claws, and took another tentative step forward.
The Zombie King ceased its attack, a faint look of confusion appearing on its rigid face.
Tang Yu looked at Jin Ye. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Is it only just now realizing we’re zombies?”
“Well, we were acting too much like humans. We don’t have much of a zombie scent, and we were using weapons.” After a moment’s thought, Jin Ye put her gun away.
That made sense. Zombies didn’t use weapons. Tang Yu put away her knife.
Meanwhile, Xiao Li took advantage of the truce to slip into the shadows behind the gears. Perhaps because she wasn’t bleeding, the Zombie King hadn’t paid her much attention.
“Big brother, need any minions?” Seeing that the fighting had stopped, Tang Yu boldly approached the Zombie King.
The Zombie King let out a gurgle, its meaning unclear.
Tang Yu’s expression turned troubled. Clearly, there was a language barrier between the three of them.
“Try the game’s alliance function,” Jin Ye reminded her.
Without much hope, Tang Yu opened her game panel. After unlocking this skill, she had tried scanning ordinary zombies, but the option to add an ally had never appeared.
Sure enough, the Zombie King’s information didn’t appear on the panel.
Just then, however, the Zombie King took a step forward, extending its palm toward Tang Yu’s face.
Tang Yu saw a yellow, mycelium-like substance growing from the Zombie King’s hand. It was impossible to tell if it was a plant or something else, but it was constantly writhing and spreading.
As the Zombie King’s palm drew closer, the tips of these mycelia suddenly shot out, lunging toward Tang Yu.
This was the Zombie King’s invitation to form an alliance.
The three of them had a sudden realization. The reason this Zombie King could control the zombies of Y-City was because of this mycelium-like substance; it could automatically seek out and parasitize other zombies.
The ground beneath Y-City was likely already teeming with these bizarre mycelia. It was only because of Tang Yu and Jin Ye’s special constitutions that they hadn’t been targeted.
Watching these living tendrils about to burrow into her mouth, Tang Yu instinctively took a step back, feeling her stomach churn.
I can’t do it. To become its subordinate, I have to eat this stuff. Tang Yu subconsciously covered her mouth. She guessed the substance would still be alive after she swallowed it and would find somewhere inside her body to take root.
Tang Yu’s gesture of covering her mouth enraged the Zombie King. It lunged forward another step, making it clear that if she didn’t comply, it would use force.
No way. This big brother seems a bit tyrannical. Not a good leader.
Covering her mouth, Tang Yu took another step back until her back hit the wall. Jin Ye started to draw her gun but was stopped by a fierce glare from the Zombie King.
The situation reached a stalemate. Just then, however, a notification popped up on the game panel.
Tang Yu switched to the panel and saw a new message had appeared.
“Special Mission Triggered: Join the C-Class Zombie King’s Faction.”
Jin Ye had clearly received the notification as well, and she couldn’t help but let out a soft gasp.
“What is it?” Tang Yu asked.
“Special missions… they’re quests where you can gain an ability.”
