Chapter 1.2: “The Transfer Student”

Li Yansui nodded and looked at her aunt, speaking softly in a coy tone, “Auntie, since these are the rules, we shouldn’t break them so easily, right?” She tugged at her aunt’s arm, adding, “Besides, don’t you believe your niece can pass the exam?”

She then blinks at her aunt and smiles sweetly.

Li Yansui had always considered herself a little troublemaker, causing her aunt countless troubles over the years.

However, to her aunt, she was always the most well-behaved child. So, she didn’t want to see her aunt get into conflicts because of her.

“Are you sure?” Her aunt glanced at her.

Knowing her aunt had compromised, Li Yansui nodded.

After a brief standoff, her aunt gave in.

She sighed and shook her head. “Alright, we’ll do as you say.”

After a few more words with Director Wang, her aunt left.

Once her aunt was gone, Director Wang stood up with a smile and said, “Xiao Li, this exam’s results will be updated on the school leaderboard in real-time, ensuring absolute fairness and transparency. So, you need to do your best.” He patted her shoulder and added, “Entering the top science class is not easy.”

Li Yansui glanced at his hand on her shoulder, frowning slightly. “I understand. Thank you for the reminder, Director Wang.”

Nodding, Director Wang led her to Class Five to familiarize herself with the environment since the exam would be the day after tomorrow. Any class changes wouldn’t take place until next week.

As they walked, Director Wang introduced the school’s facilities and rules. Li Yansui didn’t pay much attention until he mentioned the exam rules, snapping her back to reality.

“Our school has twenty classes, each with about thirty-five students. Monthly exams and midterms are regular events. The results of each exam are updated in real-time on the school’s leaderboard. Of course, you can take leave, but cheating and plagiarism are not allowed…” Director Wang was talking non-stop, but Li Yansui was already distracted.

The cicadas outside seemed to have stopped chirping, and Li Yansui’s thoughts wandered far away until she passed by the school’s leaderboard. She stopped and stared at the name in the first place for a long time.

Director Wang noticed she hadn’t followed and looked in the same direction. Seeing her looking at the leaderboard, he smiled, thinking she had seen the banner outside. He said, “Our school has many outstanding students. Recently, our student Bai Tingzhou advanced in the National Math Competition. So, studying hard is the most important thing.” His tone was full of pride.

This time, Li Yansui listened more attentively.

However, she thought, Director Wang sure can talk a lot. This is going to be annoying in the future.

Just like Director Wang, Xu Mu was still talking non-stop to his classmates about the new student.

Although he hadn’t seen her in person, he could make up stories.

Finally, a classmate asked him a substantial question, “So, what’s her name?”

Xu Mu was stunned. He had forgotten her name. He decided to think hard, not wanting to be embarrassed.

Qi Jinyang, who had listened to the whole thing, was still uninterested. He finished a set of exercises, glanced to the side, and sighed. The guy next to him had been sleeping all morning. He must have been up to something sneaky last night, he thought.

He propped his head up and shook the person next to him.

The person moved his head but didn’t look up.

He persisted, shaking him again. “Zhou Ge, wake up; school’s over.”

Bai Tingzhou finally opened his eyes and, after a moment of confusion, lifted his head.

“Let’s go,” he said lazily, rubbing his temples.

Qi Jinyang thought, Does being good at studying mean you can sleep whenever you want?

He complained in his mind but didn’t say it out loud. After all, they were good friends, and saying it might hurt their relationship. Definitely not because he couldn’t win in a fight.

Bai Tingzhou rubbed his eyes, looked at Qi Jinyang, and said disdainfully, “Aren’t you leaving? Are you staying for dinner?”

Qi Jinyang looked at the bright sunlight outside and the well-lit classroom, feeling speechless.

He thought, there’s no point in arguing with someone who just woke up.

“Zhou Ge, I was kidding,” Qi Jinyang said innocently.

Bai Tingzhou was silent for a moment, then kicked him. Qi Jinyang dodged but didn’t expect a follow-up hit, which he didn’t avoid. They started playfully hitting each other like elementary school kids.

After this commotion, Bai Tingzhou was fully awake.

He looked at the group around Xu Mu and asked Qi Jinyang, “What are they doing?”

Qi Jinyang stopped hitting him and looked over, “Oh, them? I heard a new transfer student is coming, and she’s really pretty. She wants to join our class, and ‘Wang Wukong’ is annoyed.”

“Wang Wukong” was Director Wang’s famous nickname because he could accurately catch every late student and those in relationships, treating each student differently.

So, he earned this nickname through a student vote.

Like Qi Jinyang, Bai Tingzhou wasn’t interested in this and just nodded.

Qi Jinyang, bored with studying, finally woke Bai Tingzhou up and suggested they play a game on their phones.

Bai Tingzhou, still lazy from just waking up, agreed, and they started playing secretly under the desk.

Meanwhile, Xu Mu, struggling to remember the name, finally decided to think hard.

Just then, a tall student entered, shouting, “Wang Wukong is here!” and Xu Mu finally remembered, “I got it! Her name is Li Yansui!”

Hearing the name, Bai Tingzhou was stunned. His game move missed, and Qi Jinyang, who’s frustrated, kicked him.

“Zhou Ge, what are you doing? I’m about to die!”

“Help me!”

Bai Tingzhou suddenly had a headache, hoping he had heard wrong.

Before he could react, Qi Jinyang quickly hid their phones and took out a comic book.
