Chapter 4

Shen Tian happily went to sleep. The next day, because she was thinking about finding Little Sister Lu, she woke up at 6 o’clock, with messy hair, and went to find her mother and mommy. “Mother, Mommy, Tiantian is going to school~”

Shen Xian was the first to be woken up by the little one. She rubbed her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock. “You’re awake so early? Alright, Mommy will take you to wash up first.”

While Shen Xian was talking to the little one, Lin Qinghan also woke up and started getting ready.

After Shen Tian and the others finished washing up, Aunt Wang downstairs had already prepared breakfast. Breakfast was simple shrimp porridge, milk buns, and a few cold dishes mixed by Aunt Wang.

Shen Tian was thinking about finding Little Sister Lu, so she ate breakfast with extra enthusiasm. She gobbled up a milk bun in a few big bites and didn’t forget to sip some shrimp porridge to wash it down.

While Shen Tian was happily eating, she noticed her mommy, mother, and grandparents occasionally looking at her. Shen Tian smiled at them while eating.

It wasn’t surprising that others were watching Shen Tian. Her adorable way of eating so eagerly made people feel hungry just watching her. After the little one was full, she obediently wiped her little mouth clean and waited for her mother and mommy to take her to school.

Seeing that the little one was ready, Shen Xian and Lin Qinghan didn’t delay. They said goodbye and took the little one out.

Shen Tian was especially excited in the car. More than going to school, she was thrilled about her Little Sister Lu.

When the car arrived at the school gate, as soon as Lin Qinghan lifted the little one out of the car, Shen Tian couldn’t wait and ran toward the school. “Mother, Mommy, bye~”

Lin Qinghan laughed as she watched her little one run into the school. She returned to the passenger seat and said to Shen Xian, “Tiantian is growing up. She cares so much about her little friends. It’s been a year, and she still remembers. I’m even a bit jealous.”

Shen Xian laughed and reassured Lin Qinghan, “This shows our Tiantian is loyal. It’s a good thing. She’s faithful to her friends. Why are you jealous of a kid? Being jealous of me is enough.”

Lin Qinghan glared at Shen Xian and said with a light laugh, “You dare?”

Shen Xian hesitated for a moment before stammering, “Well, I wouldn’t dare.”

Shen Tian arrived early today. When she got to the classroom, it was only 7:15. A few kids were already there, scattered around. Shen Tian put down her little backpack and ran outside. Her class was Class 1, closest to the first-floor hallway. The other classes were further down the corridor.

Shen Tian walked quickly down the corridor with her little legs, peeking into each classroom she passed. Unfortunately, she reached Class 6 without seeing Little Sister Lu. Feeling a bit disappointed, she clenched her little hands hanging by her sides. Then she thought, all the kids have to pass by Class 1 to get to school. So, the little one ran back to the corridor outside her classroom, stood there, and looked at the kids coming her way.

After watching for a while, she didn’t see Little Sister Lu but spotted Huang Shuai and Li Mengmeng. Li Mengmeng walked over with her backpack and asked Shen Tian, “Tiantian, what are you doing standing outside?”

“I’m waiting for Little Sister Lu. I saw her yesterday, but she didn’t hear me call her. I’m waiting for her here,” Shen Tian said, looking around while tilting her little face up.

Seeing her good friend looking for someone, Li Mengmeng immediately handed her backpack to Huang Shuai. “Huang Shuai, help me put my backpack in the classroom. I’m helping Tiantian wait for Little Sister Lu.”

“Okay, I’ll put the backpacks away and wait with you,” Huang Shuai said, taking two big backpacks into the classroom. He quickly came back out. Shen Tian and Li Mengmeng stood on the left side of the corridor, while Huang Shuai stood on the right. Kids passing by Class 1 looked curiously at Shen Tian and the others, wondering why these kids weren’t going into their classroom.

It was soon 7:25, almost time to go into class. Shen Tian was getting anxious. Just then, she saw Lu Ningwan behind a few other kids. Shen Tian instantly cheered up, jumped up high, and shouted to Lu Ningwan, “Little Sister Lu, it’s me, Tiantian! Do you still remember me?”

Lu Ningwan instinctively looked up at Shen Tian. She saw Shen Tian, slightly shorter than her, waving her chubby little arms excitedly with a joyful face.

But Lu Ningwan lowered her head, pretending not to see Shen Tian, and walked along the other side of the corridor.

The smile on Shen Tian’s little face froze. Little Sister Lu clearly saw her just now, so why did she look down?

Shen Tian instinctively stepped forward to grab Lu Ningwan’s hand. As soon as she touched her, Lu Ningwan shook her off. Shen Tian’s little face showed some hurt. She didn’t understand why Little Sister Lu was ignoring her. Her eyes slowly turned red. “Little Sister Lu, it’s Tiantian. Don’t you recognize me?”

Lu Ningwan regretted shaking her off, especially when she saw Shen Tian’s red eyes. She held back for a moment, then said to Shen Tian, “I’m sorry,” before quickly walking away.

“Lu Ningwan, how could you do that? Tiantian waited for you all morning and even asked me and Huang Shuai to help look for you…” Li Mengmeng saw her little friend being wronged, her face red with anger.

Many first-graders in the corridor watched this scene, some still standing there, not quite ready to move on. But the 7:30 bell rang on time, and the kids rushed into their classrooms like they were on fire.

Li Mengmeng and Huang Shuai pulled Shen Tian back to the classroom. Li Mengmeng wanted to comfort Shen Tian, but their class teacher, Qiao Yunnian, was already at the door. Li Mengmeng had to return to her seat.

Shen Tian still hadn’t recovered from what just happened. The Little Sister Lu she had been thinking about not only ignored her but also shook off her hand. It didn’t hurt much physically, but Shen Tian’s heart ached, and she felt wronged. Tears soon filled her eyes, dripping down her little face. Sniffling, she didn’t wipe her tears. She let them fall. She hadn’t done anything wrong, so she wasn’t going to wipe her tears! If anyone should wipe them, it should be Little Sister Lu, and only then would she barely forgive her! It was all Little Sister Lu’s fault for being mean!

The little one was lost in her sadness over being rejected by Little Sister Lu. Teacher Qiao sighed helplessly as she looked at the tear-soaked Shen Tian and walked toward her.

Every year, some students cried on the first day of school, wanting to go home. Usually, it happened after one or two classes when kids got restless. In all her years of teaching, Teacher Qiao had never seen a kid like Shen Tian, crying as soon as the bell rang.

Maybe because Shen Tian was crying so sadly, the classroom became even quieter, with her sobs standing out. Teacher Qiao reached Shen Tian’s desk and gently tapped it. “Shen Tian, you’re in elementary school now. You’re a big kid. You can’t cry for your mother anymore. Let Teacher wipe your tears, and we need to start morning reading.”

Shen Tian was still feeling wronged and mumbled, “I’m not looking for my mother. I’m looking for Little Sister Lu~” But her voice was soft and muffled, and no one but her could hear it.

Teacher Qiao thought Shen Tian was upset about missing her mother. She wiped her tears again, and Shen Tian felt a little better, but her little chest still burned with frustration. She was determined to get answers at break time!

“Alright, kids, you’re all brave, right? Let’s show Shen Tian how brave everyone is and let her learn from you, okay?” Teacher Qiao said smoothly, taking the chance to encourage the kids.

The kids, being young, loved praise from the teacher. A little red flower could make them overjoyed. Now that the teacher called them brave, they sat up straight. Even the kids who were about to cry and ask for their mothers felt too shy to cry after the praise. They thought their crying wouldn’t be as heartfelt as Shen Tian’s anyway. Since the teacher didn’t let Shen Tian go to her mother, the little sparks of wanting to cry in their hearts were doused, and they sat quietly in their seats.

“Class, morning reading is usually for reading texts or reviewing and previewing lessons. But since you don’t know how yet, today’s morning reading will be simple self-introductions so everyone can get to know each other,” Teacher Qiao said, scanning the kids in their seats. “Let’s start with the kids by the window and go in order.”

The kids were excited and took turns introducing themselves. When it was Shen Tian’s turn, she was still upset about Little Sister Lu rejecting her. She wasn’t in a good mood. Standing up, she said in a flat voice, “My name is Shen Tian. I’m six years old. I hope to get along well with everyone. Thank you.” She spoke without much energy, but the other kids thought she was missing her mother and felt bad for her. After her introduction, the class burst into loud applause.

Shen Tian was stunned. She thought her introduction was a bit half-hearted, so why was everyone clapping so loudly? Did she say something amazing?

Teacher Qiao, standing at the podium, happily said to Shen Tian, “Shen Tian overcame her homesickness and still managed to introduce herself. Class, isn’t Shen Tian awesome?”

The kids agreed, “Awesome!”

“Should we learn from her?” Teacher Qiao gently encouraged.

“Yes!”

“Great, then today, Teacher will give the first little red flower to Shen Tian,” Teacher Qiao said with a smile, sticking a red flower on Shen Tian’s language textbook. The other kids looked at her with envy.

Even the kids who wanted to cry felt a bit regretful. They thought they should’ve cried earlier, not as impressively as Shen Tian, who started crying right when the bell rang.

Shen Tian stared blankly at the red flower on her book. Deep down, she didn’t really want it. More than that, she wanted her Little Sister Lu to hold her hand and comfort her, especially since Little Sister Lu had hurt her by shaking her off!
